Conversation etiquette varies between generations, cultures and platforms. Younger age groups might take words once thought to be insulting and use them in an opposite way as a form of reclamation. In some countries, talking about politics or religion is considered rude, while in others it’s completely acceptable. And certainly, there are quite a few things muttered online that (hopefully) someone would never actually say out loud. (Though it might be a good practice to not type it, either.)

And yet, despite all the nuance, there are a few key approaches that create a widely agreed upon golden standard, such as active listening, having a clear purpose in what’s being said and, ultimately, showing respect for who is being spoken to. These simple guidelines can help a person be more engaging and charismatic, which can obviously be useful traits whether you’re looking to change the world or just connect with new people.

Likewise, there are fairly universal things that can be said in a conversation that instantly come across as unlikeable. Redditor u/theevilempire asked folks to list certain words or phrases that elicited an overall negative reaction when heard, and commenters didn’t hold back.

Some, if not many, of these commonly spoken expressions aren’t even inherently repelling, but are made that way simply because the person saying it is being hypocritical or insensitive. Others are just plain ol’ overused.

Without further ado, here are 10 phrases that make a person instantly unlikeable in a conversation:

1.“I tell it like it is”

This was the top answer, with the general agreement being that a person who uses this phrase is not only being unnecessarily cruel under the guise of honesty, but they’re also usually a person who can’t take criticism from anybody else.

“We all need to hear hard truths sometimes. That being said, usually people who are ‘blunt’ and ‘tell it like it is’ are exactly the same ones who can dish it out but can’t take it,” midget_rancher79 wrote.

Objective_Stick_2114 added: “Exactly. I think a person can be direct, to the point, and still be likeable. You don’t have to be hurtful or brutal to be considered direct. It’s the unsolicited judgemental comments that are most likely unnecessary, over-indulgent, and just mean. I find the most direct people actually do use a lot of discretion when speaking to others, and listen more than they speak.”

2. Any “I’m not [insert something here], but…” statements

People had a ton of examples for this. “I’m not racist, but…”; “No offense, but…”; “Don’t take this the wrong way, but…”;”Not to get political, but…” These statements are usually followed by things that would most likely be highly offensive/racist/politically leaning, etc, and therefore make the person saying it comes across like they wanted to insult someone without facing potential consequences.

3. Using mental disorders to describe a normal idiosyncrasy

Foo Fighters have a new album, But Here We Are, on the way, and it’ll be their first one since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Now we’ve gotten a better look at the design of the physical release, which revealed the project is dedicated to Hawkins, as well as Dave Grohl’s mother, Virginia Hanlon Grohl.

On May 16, Brooklyn-based graphic arts studio Morning Breath Inc. shared photos of their physical packaging designs for But Here We Are, writing on Instagram, “It’s always an honor to work with @foofighters. This is the design for their latest album ‘But Here We Are’. Definitely a new turn for us as we explored minimalism and new techniques printing white on white.”

One of the photos shows the album’s dedication: “For Virginia and Taylor.”

Virginia’s inclusion in the dedication follows reports that she died in 2022. There has been no official announcement about her passing and no obituary has surfaced, but some fans say Violet Grohl, Dave’s daughter, shared the news on Instagram Live. In 2017, Virginia released the book From Cradle To Stage: Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked And Raised Rock Stars, then made a TV series based on the book in 2021.

The Golden State Warriors are entering a critical summer, where they will have to determine the future of their franchise on a number of fronts.

Klay Thompson is up for an extension and Draymond Green is a free agent, with both veterans expecting lucrative, long-term deals given what they’ve provided to the franchise in helping lead them to four championships. Beyond that, Jordan Poole’s fit with the franchise is a question after a rough postseason as he’s now on a large contract, and there are questions about whether they should look to move Poole and other young players like Jonathan Kuminga to further open their championship window in the immediate. One would think how this offseason goes from a roster perspective will have some bearing on Steve Kerr’s future as head coach, as he is entering the final year of his deal.

However, before any of that gets sorted out, the team has to figure out who will be making all of those decisions. President of basketball operations Bob Myers will see his deal run up at the end of June, and his status has been lingering in the background all year. That is now front and center, and based on Shams Charania and Anthony Slater’s latest report for The Athletic, there has been no movement on bringing Myers back and the team is now “bracing” for him to walk next month.

The Golden State Warriors and president of basketball operations Bob Myers have had no substantial contract extension talks in months and the sides are bracing for the likelihood that Myers could walk away from the franchise, league sources told The Athletic. His contract is up on June 30.

The report notes that Myers has interest from all over, including other NBA franchise, other sports leagues, media jobs, and the private sector, and that a deal making him among the league’s highest paid executives still might not be enough to keep him. Should Myers leave, the expectation is assistant GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. would step up into that lead executive role, but not meeting Myers’ demands would certainly raise questions about whether the Warriors will be looking to fully invest in their group to keep them all together long-term.

Since the revolutionary BTS announced its hiatus last October, Suga has been establishing himself as a solo artist away from the group. In April, under his pseudonym Agust D, Suga released D-Day, his debut solo album. His subsequent first-ever headlining solo tour is underway, and Halsey surprised fans at Suga’s third show at Kia Forum in Los Angeles last Sunday, May 14.

The two stars performed “Suga’s Interlude,” from Halsey’s 2020 album, Manic — the track’s live debut — but their friendship dates back further than that. Halsey detailed their bond in an Instagram post on Wednesday, May 17.

“Guested at the forum the other night with @agustd and we performed ‘suga’s interlude’ for the first time ever live! I’ve shared a stage with my friend many times, but never alone and never like this,” she wrote in the post. “When the song ended all we could do was laugh because it was just a feeling of ‘woah that just happened?!’ after knowing each other for 7 years. I call Suga ‘twin’ for a lot of reasons. We have the same smile, we have a lot of shared interests, sometimes we even have the same haircut”

They continued, “But I mostly say it because we seem strangely (and sometimes wordlessly) connected on a creative wavelength. Watching him perform his solo concert was an incredible experience. He is a true artist, which I’ve always known. But seeing the energy, versatility, creativity, and courageous darkness of the show blew me away. Moments like these remind me why we are so fortunate to have this way of expressing ourselves. I am so grateful! Thanks to twin for having me and thank you ARMY for, as always, singing your hearts out and making me feel right at home.”

As captured by a BTS fan account on Twitter, Suga playfully commented beneath the post, “twin??? I’m a year older than you.” Halsey replied, “@agustd omg how rude of me to not respect my elders. sorry old man, ur right [angel emoji].”

Suga continued his tour at Oakland Arena in Oakland, California on Wednesday, and he’s set to take it to the Indonesia Convention Exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia on May 26, 27, and 28.

Meanwhile, Halsey provided fans an update on when new music can be expected from them in a lengthy Tumblr post last week.

“I want you to know I am hard at work,” she wrote. “There were some restrictions I was under, for a lot longer than it seemed, but they are no longer in the way. I’m sure you can fill in the blanks. I’m always writing aimlessly and lawlessly as you know. But ‘album mode’ is a whole other arena and the games are just beginning. I am working on some of my favorite stuff I’ve ever conjured.”

The Miami Heat took Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on the road against the Boston Celtics thanks to another heroic performance from Jimmy Butler, who scored 35 points and took over in the second half to lead Miami to a comeback win.

However, the final five minutes of the game were not able to be seen by fans who happen to be subscribers to YouTube TV (which happens to be the NBA’s lead presenting sponsor for the NBA Finals). The service had been having some issues throughout the night, buffering and skipping ahead, which was suboptimal but something that happens with streaming services. Then, during a timeout late in the fourth quarter, many viewers were greeted with the first 10 seconds of The Little Mermaid trailer on a loop, with exiting out of the app and restarting it only putting you right back into Little Mermaid hell.

Others were simply shown error messages, or had seen their feeds freeze up earlier in the night.

Naturally, this did not go over well with the many fans who are subscribers of the service, who were forced to watch the game via a box score or gamecast online. The only positive was it allowed NBA Twitter to do what it does best, getting off some jokes in the midst of their frustration with the service.

Given YouTube TV has marketed heavily to sports fans, it wasn’t a great look, with many pointing out that NFL Sunday Ticket is moving to the service next year and there are some serious concerns it will handle that well — particularly considering DirecTV had its own issues every year at launch.

Weezer surprised fans with a one-night-only show at The Glass House in Pomona, California, which Uproxx attended, relaying that the band attempted to “try a bunch of songs we don’t normally play and see what y’all think” ahead of their Indie Rock Road Trip summer tour.

On Wednesday, May 17, Weezer popped up unexpectedly again in California. This time, the beloved rockers played their tried-and-true hits for Writers Guild Of America members who were picketing outside of Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, per TMZ.

“Lead singer Rivers Cuomo was flanked by guitarists Brian Bell and Scott Shriner outside the major movie studio Wednesday, playing an acoustic concert for the writers who are continuing their strike,” the outlet stated. “The Writers Guild of America members surrounded the band as they performed from just outside the studio entrance with Weezer playing some of their biggest hits, including ‘Beverly Hills’ and ‘Buddy Holly.’”

Imagine Dragons did something similar on May 9, but their acoustic concert was held for picketers at the Netflix headquarters in LA.

“We just want fair compensation for people who put in the time and are incredible creators that drive so much of the entertainment that influences the world,” Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds told TMZ. “We have many friends who are writers.”

Reynolds added, “The writers are the ones who make all the magic happen, and creativity is what drives so much of the world – drives our joy. It’s my greatest joy comes from these people. Writers. They deserve to be compensated.”

The Boston Celtics appeared in control at halftime of Game 1, taking a 66-57 lead into the break with a dominant showing in the paint (40-14 advantage). Miami was hanging around thanks to some hot three-point shooting, but Boston was the team controlling the pace and getting seemingly whatever they wanted.

In the second half, things flipped, as Miami became the more physical team, led by Jimmy Butler but with contributions up and down the roster, as they turned that nine-point deficit entering the third quarter into an 11-point advantage by the time the fourth quarter arrived. While Bam Adebayo had a terrific night with 20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists and four other members of the Heat scored 15 points, it was Jimmy Butler who took center stage yet again in these playoffs.

Butler finished the game with 35 points, seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds, as he had his hands in everything the Heat were doing well on both ends of the floor. Boston struggled with how to contain Butler in the second half. When they left him single-covered, he got to his spots and buried bucket after bucket. When they sent doubles, he calmly sought out the open man who knocked down the shot more often than not — Miami shot 51.6 percent from three on the night.

As has been the case all postseason, Butler’s knack for knocking down demoralizing threes showed up again in Game 1. He shoots them sparingly (albeit, far more frequently in the playoffs), but that only makes his made threes feel like they’re worth even more. In the third quarter, as Miami had just taken the lead, he buried a corner three off some Steph Curry-like movement after passing the ball, relocating to put Miami up eight.

Then, in the fourth quarter, he sunk the dagger in the Celtics with a three that made Kevin Harlan simply exclaim “JIMMY FRICKIN’ BUTLER!” as Reggie Miller cackled at the absurdity of the shot.

While Butler refuses to acknowledge the existence of Playoff Jimmy, he was once again on full display on Wednesday night, stealing home court in the opener and forcing Boston to now play catchup. Butler certainly got help from the rest of the squad, as Gabe Vincent, Kyle Lowry, Max Strus, and Cody Martin all scored 15 points, knocking down key shots both early and late, in support of Butler and Adebayo. Still, this team will only go as far as Butler carries them, and to this point we haven’t found the limit of where that is.

For Boston, they failed to counter Miami’s adjustments to shut off the paint in the second half (and stop turning the ball over), as their offense stalled a bit and they struggled to create the same kind of looks they had gotten early in the night. Even so, they shot 51.9 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three, which isn’t a catastrophe, which is why you’d expect a lot of their focus to be on the defensive end where they just could not get enough stops against a hot-shooting Heat team.

While it might be shooting variance, this is also the exact way Miami took down Milwaukee in the first round. This is a team that’s proven it can just keep doing this if you don’t make adjustments to take things away from them, and we’ll see if Boston can make those changes to try and slow down Playoff Jimmy and Miami’s shooters in Game 2.

Warning: This post contains a major spoiler about a part at the end of Fast X. Said spoiler has already been reported on, but we’re just trying to be nice here.

Fast X hits theaters this weekend, and however ridiculous it winds up being, it will still be a bittersweet affair: After all, it’s the penultimate entry in the main wing of the franchise. So much has changed since the first one in 2001. What started as a relatively modest affair about hot rodders who also do heists somehow, about two decades later, went to space (among other insanities).

In many ways, the Fast and Furious films have helped shape and define the modern blockbuster era. In other ways it adapts to trends, plays ball. One now-common aspect of big motion pictures is this: If it’s a franchse film, it almost certainly has a scene during or following the end credits.

So does Fast X have any post-credit scenes?

The answer is: Yes. Yes, it does. As per /Film, it only has one. Some of today’s blockbusters have multiple such scenes. But not this one. There’s more good news: Whereas many of today’s blockbusters have Scorsese picture-sized lengths, Fast X is “only” two hours and 21. For some perspective, that’s seven minutes shy of Goodfellas, though Marvel movies are now even longer than that.

Now for the slight spoiler (that was already spoiled by others): Said post-credits scene features a surprising return. As per The Wrap, it marks the (brief) return of Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. Does that mean Johnson and Vin Diesel have patched things up? Was their beef a fake? Or did the Fast X team simply make sure Diesel was nowhere to be found when the filmed Johnson’s scene? We may or may not ever find out.

Fast X hits theaters on May 19.

The troubling allegations against Shy Glizzy are mounting. On Tuesday, May 16, TMZ reported that the Washington, DC rapper had been arrested last Saturday, May 13, “following a verbal altercation with his on-again, off-again girlfriend.”

The outlet noted that police claimed it “escalated to the point where Shy grabbed a firearm and made a threat.” After West Hollywood Sheriff’s Deputies finally located Glizzy later that evening, he was arrested on a felony charge of making criminal threats.

“Records show he was released after about 4 hours behind bars on a $50,000 bond,” TMZ‘s report stated. “Our sources say police did not find a gun on Shy when he was arrested … and he denied ever threatening the girlfriend, who we’re told he’s been dating off and on for four months.”

On Wednesday, May 17, TMZ gave an update, reporting that Amaya Colon, the aforementioned ex-girlfriend, has filed a request for a restraining order against Glizzy because “he’s threatening to kill her, her family, her friends, and any man she dates in the future.” A temporary restraining order has been granted.

TMZ obtained the documents and relayed more concerning details:

“Amaya claims Shy has repeatedly told her he will kill her and her mother. She says he’s been making the threats ever since she broke up with him in April … and she says he sent her a text message that said, ‘Ima f*** ya life up.’

Amaya claims she started dating Shy in December but broke up with him on April 28 because she says he has ‘anger issues. She says Shy did not take the breakup well and things reached a head on May 13, when he was arrested for allegedly threatening her.”

Glizzy also allegedly texted Colon’s unnamed best friend, wriring, “Imma get her a** beat.”

Five years ago Roseanne Barr torched her career. After a tweet of hers was condemned as racist, the once-beloved performer saw the newly revived Roseanne cancelled and name verboten in Hollywood. It’s no shock that she’s still mad about it, but it appears she holds extra ire for one person in particular.

As per Entertainment Weekly, Barr went on Megyn Kelly’s podcast, where she laid into Sara Gilbert, who played daughter Darlene. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions, Barr laid the bulk of her woes at Gilbert’s feet, who she said “stabbed” her in the back.

“It was her tweet that canceled the show,” Barr said. “And then she tweeted ‘It’s sad when one cast member,’ something about racist, blah, blah. And I was floored. I was just floored. And you know, but she ends up owning my work and Tom Werner becomes her partner in owning my work.”

Barr said she was particularly taken aback Gilbert, she said, had “begged me to come back saying, ‘I’ve got your back. This time I won’t let anyone at you. I won’t let anyone hurt you. I’m gonna protect you. I know you have mental health problems, but I’m gonna be there. I’m gonna stand in the way.’”

Of course, Roseanne may have been cancelled but it didn’t exactly die. Instead it came back as The Conners, which brough back everyone save Barr. Her character was killed off, which Barr perceived as a message.

“And you know, they just tried to kill me and I felt like they killed my character and my character,” she said, “but I thought they were sending a message over the airwaves because they knew I had mental health issues. I thought they wanted me to kill myself. And all my friends did too. They said, they’re trying to push you to suicide.”

Oddly enough, Barr has previously said she forgave Gilbert for publicly condemning her onscreen mom’s career-torching tweet. But clearly that was then.
