When Does ‘American Primeval’ Premiere On Netflix?

american-primeval-lg
Netflix

Netflix is doing just fine these days in the original TV realm. Spy thrillers are obviously working damn well for them as are horror and fantasy series, but undoubtedly, Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ success is motivating other services (including Netflix) to get into the Neo-Western game.

That drive has already yielded the Australian Outback-set Territory series (which will likely receive a second season), and The Abandons (set in 1850s Oregon) should arrive this year (albeit without Kurt Sutter). That same time-period focus applies to Netflix’s American Primeval, which combines the powers of Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg, Narcos executive producer Eric Newman, and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith to deliver a limited series set in 1857s America. “Brutal” doesn’t even begin to describe what viewers shall watch when the very TV-MA show arrives.

When Does American Primeval Come Out On Netflix?

The six-episode series, which stars Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin among an ensemble cast, will stream on Thursday, January 9, 2024. From the synopsis:

“This is America… 1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. AMERICAN PRIMEVAL is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.”

Netflix released a Mature-Rated trailer to start the year off:

The American Primeval cast further includes Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Dane DeHaan, Derek Hinkey, Joe Tippett, Preston Mota, Shawnee Pourier, Jai Courtney, and Shea Whigham. Guest stars include Kim Coates (as Brigham Young), Lucas Neff, Tokala Black Elk, Nick Hargrove, Irene Bedard, Kyle Davis, Alex Breaux, Kip Weeks, Jeremiah Bitsui, Dominic Bogart, and Alex Fine. And if you would like to see a slightly less TV-MA trailer, Netflix has that, too:

What’s At Stake In Week 18 Of The NFL Season?

jared goff
Getty Image

We have finally arrived at the last week of the NFL’s regular season, and despite the expansion of the playoffs to 14 teams, only two playoff spots are still up for grabs going into the last week of the season. This season has seen a pretty massive separation between the good teams and bad teams in the NFL, with very little in the way of a middle class scrapping for Wild Card spots.

Even with just two spots up for grabs — and only five teams in the mix for those spots — there is some seeding drama still to play out in the NFL’s regular season finale. Here, we’ll go through everything that is still not set in stone and look at the games that will determine who ends up where for Wild Card Weekend.

NFC South Champion

We’ll start with one of three divisions still waiting to be sorted out, and the only one that features two teams that will either win the division or miss the playoffs entirely. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) come in with a 1-game lead on the Atlanta Falcons (8-8), meaning they just need to beat the New Orleans Saints (or tie them) to punch their ticket to the playoffs as the NFC’s 4-seed. The Falcons, meanwhile, need to beat the Carolina Panthers and have the Bucs lose to get into the postseason. Both of those games will be in the 1:00 p.m. ET window.

NFC North Champion and NFC 1-seed

The best game of Sunday will feature the Detroit Lions (14-2) hosting the Minnesota Vikings (14-2) on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, where the winner will get the NFC’s top seed and a bye, while the loser will fall to the 5-seed and face the NFC South champ next week. What makes it even more intriguing is that the loser of this game will be a heavy favorite over either the Bucs or Falcons, and if they take care of business on the road there, we will get a rematch of this game in the Divisional Round. Both teams will want that bye and home field advantage, but it feels particularly important for a banged-up Lions team to get an week of rest.

AFC North Champion

The Baltimore Ravens (11-5) hold a one-game lead on the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6) in the AFC North, meaning if they can beat the Cleveland Browns (or tie them) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET, they will lock up the 3-seed in the AFC. If they were to lose, then the Steelers would be able to win the division if they can beat the Bengals on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. ET. The 3-seed will play host to the Chargers on Wild Card Weekend, while the 5-seed will go on the road to Houston.

AFC 7-seed

There are still three teams alive for the final playoff spot in the AFC, as the Denver Broncos (9-7), Miami Dolphins (8-8), and Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) are all hoping to nab the 7-seed and a trip to Buffalo for the Wild Card. For Denver, the formula is simple, beat the Chiefs (playing mostly their backups) and they are in. If the Broncos lose, however, it opens the door for Miami and Cincinnati. If the Dolphins can beat the Jets and get a Denver loss, they would be in, while the Bengals need to beat the Steelers and get a Broncos loss and a Dolphins loss or tie. We will know by late Saturday night if the Bengals are still alive, while the Dolphins and Broncos will be playing at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.

NFC 6-seed

The Washington Commanders (11-5) and the Green Bay Packers (11-5) are currently tied in the standings, with Washington owning the tiebreaker. If the Commanders can beat the Cowboys, they’ll be the 6-seed, but if Dallas wins, Green Bay can jump into the 6-seed with a win over the Bears. The difference will be a visit to L.A. to face the Rams as the 6-seed or a trip to Philadelphia as the 7-seed. Both of those games will be played in the 1:00 p.m. ET window on Sunday.

Doechii Turns The ‘Denial Is A River’ Video Into A Tribute To Classic Sitcoms Like ‘Family Matters’

Last week, Doechii teased the Family Matters-inspired video for “Denial Is A River,” a standout track from her Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape. The video is now here, and it’s not only picked with cameos, including Abbott Elementary favorite Zack Fox, ScHoolboy Q, Rickey Thompson, Teezo Touchdown, Earl Sweatshirt, SiR, Baby Tate and DJ Miss Milan, it’s also a pitch-perfect homage to classic 1990s sitcoms. Bonus points for the ragdoll toss that’s straight out of an episode of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.

You can watch the “Denial Is A River” video above.

“This song is really just like people hearing how I am, the inner dialogue that I’m having with myself,” Doechii told Rolling Stone about “Denial Is A River,” which was inspired by “A Children’s Story” by Slick Rick. “Like, OK, maybe you should really unpack that. This is an inner dialogue that I’m having with the voices in my head. It just seems like I’m less crazy because I do it with a funny voice.”

2024 was Doechii’s breakout year, with appearances on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series. She also went on a sold-out tour and stole the show at Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw.

Jane Remover Announces A New Album, ‘Revengeseekerz,’ With The Glitchy First Single ‘JRJRJR’

Jane Remover fans are having a happy new year.

The “Magic I Want U” singer has announced a new album, Revengeseekerz, on deadAir Records. There’s no tracklist or release date for the follow-up to 2023’s Census Designated yet, but you can listen to the part hip hop, part hyperpop first single, “JRJRJR,” in the video directed by Parker Corey above.

“When I listen to my music, I can tell that I made it,” Jane Remover told Alternative Press when asked about the throughline across her music. “Being an artist is distinguishing that sound and making it your own, even if it’s, for lack of better words, a cookie-cutter type of song or album or project. There could be a hundred musicians who all make an album with just their voice and the guitar, Pink Moon-type shit. But it’s going to sound different because everybody sings differently and writes differently.

For the most part, year-end music lists don’t really wait until the end of the year, instead dropping at some point usually around early December. Tyler The Creator, though, decided to wait until the last minute, December 31st, to share his top songs of the year.

He did so on X (formerly Twitter), listing tracks by artists including Kendrick Lamar, GloRilla, Tommy Richman, Mk.gee, Luj Tyler, and himself. The tweet reads:

Somebody tried calling Tyler out for putting himself on his list, but Tyler confidently responded, “yeah i like the music i make im confused on the question.”

Meanwhile, in a tweet from a few days before, he marked the anniversary of his debut album, Bastard, by writing, “BASTARD released 15 years ago. thank you to everyone who listened to anything over the years. was in such a different zone musically and as a person, but was determined to be who i am today. full of gratitude cause it all came true. earl and i got to do ASSMILK; i did ODD TODDLERS at coachella main stage how wild?!? this album was made at ages 16-18. what a time. thank you!”

A Troll Called Rihanna ‘Forehead’ While Demanding A New Album And The Singer Fired Back

Rihanna Fenty Beauty Product Launch Event 2024

For years now, people have been pestering Rihanna to release a new album. It’s largely been in good fun, but recently, one fan crossed a line and Rihanna didn’t hold back with her response.

Online, a user named Lorenzo wrote, “We want an album forehead.” Rihanna clapped back, “listen Lorenzo! You ain’t cute enough to be calling me by my black name you dizzy f*ck!”

For the record, forehead jokes apparently aren’t off-limits for Rihanna, but she’d seemingly prefer if they come from people close to her, or just herself. In a 2023 interview, she said of her family, “You don’t have an idea [when you picture your future family]. I hoped that I could have kids one day. And I hoped that I could have them in love. I hoped I could be a part of a family that breaks generational curses… it’s happening, and I can’t believe it. The only thing I imagined was probably the forehead on RZA. Riot doesn’t have it. I’m like, wait, are you sure? You can’t lose this thing.”

Then, in 2024, she made her pick for who she’d like to portray her in a biopic, saying, “Taylor Russell. You know why? Because she’s got, like, a nice forehead. She’s, like, fly. And I feel like I want to be her, so I want her to pretend to be me. I want people to see me in that light.”

Ice Spice Ended Her 2024 By Getting Booed For Showing Up Late To A New Year’s Eve Music Festival Set

Ice Spice Y2K World Tour 2024
Getty Image

Ice Spice was booked as one of the headliners of Australia’s Wildlands Festival on New Year’s Eve. It did not go well.

The “Princess Diana” rapper reportedly showed up 25 minutes late for her 30-minute set, and left after only two songs. Videos from the festival show the moment Ice Spice’s mic was cut, eliciting boos from the restless crowd.

“At 11.01 p.m. – they gave her an extra minute – they cut the mic and you heard the collective sigh from the crowd,” podcaster Brenton Larney told the Guardian. “They’d been waiting for a while and they get two songs? So that was a bit ridiculous and it was just really disrespectful how she walked off, she was laughing they tried to give her flowers for her birthday and she just shrugged them off.” He added that it appeared Ice Spice seemed like she “didn’t want to be there… It was just really disrespectful to see.”

Wildlands acknowledged the incident on social media. “We understand that Ice Spice’s delayed arrival caused some frustration,” the festival wrote. “Managing a stacked festival means that we have to be extremely firm with scheduled set times. We had a strict curfew of 12:30 and needed to ensure that Chase & Status went on stage on time so you could all enjoy the NYE Countdown!”

Ice Spice released a deluxe version of her debut album Y2K! on Christmas.

Coi Leray Is Pregnant With Her And Trippie Redd’s First Child, She Announces With Baby Bump Photos

Coi Leray just started off the new year with a bang, by announcing she’s pregnant with her and Trippie Redd’s first baby.

Leray revealed the news last night (January 1), taking to Instagram to share a gallery of photos of her baby bump and of her sharing smiles with Trippie. She wrote in the post’s caption, “I’m a rock star mommy [lips emoji][face holding back tears emoji] we ready for 2025 [black heart emoji].”

In an Instagram Story, she added, “I’m over 4 months. I’m just small as hell of course.”

According to Vibe, Coi and Trippie briefly dated in 2019, but reunited around August 2024.

Trippie addressed the relationship on his 2019 song “Leray,” saying, “The best part of us was me / When you got with me, you were a genius / Now without me, you have to live life as an idiot.” In an interview following the song’s release, Leray responded, “At first, no, I didn’t like it. It was very like, ‘What the f*ck,’ because I always thought we really had something outside of the music. So I’m just like, ‘Damn. If you got something to say, let’s get together and you say that sh*t to my face.’ […] I felt like I’m being used for clickbait.”

But, that’s clearly all water under the bridge now as the pair awaits the arrival of their baby.

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Season 4: Everything To Know So Far About Danny McBride’s Religious Satire With An All-Time Great Cast (Dec. 2024 Update)

the righteous gemstones
hbo

There’s no objectively correct answer for the best Danny McBride-created show. They’re all great in different ways: Eastbound & Down for its vulgar twist on the comeback story; Vice Principals for its depiction of white male privilege; and The Righteous Gemstones for its satire of money-hungry televangelists. But since only one of that HBO trilogy has Edi Patterson doing this, screw it, let’s call The Righteous Gemstones the best of the bunch.

Here’s everything we know about The Righteous Gemstones season 4.

Plot

The Righteous Gemstones season 3 ended with Aimee-Leigh’s Force ghost watching her family have the time of their freaking lives while driving a monster truck. This sweet moment of destruction could have been a series finale, but luckily, that is not the case. The Righteous Gemstones will be back for season 4, although plot details are hard to come by. The closest thing we’ve gotten to an update (other than the involvement of “males to portray Civil War Confederate and Union Soldiers”) is what Walton Goggins, who plays Baby Billy, wrote on Instagram once filming wrapped.

“Jokers Wild. This fella… Well… I love him,” he raved about co-star Danny McBride. “And the ones after that, in front of and behind the camera, I love them too. Pros… friends… long time friends. Just wrapped season 4 of the TRG. DMB is a [crown emoji] The Rough House boys are [crown emoji]’s. I did most of em in B/W out of respect for our costume designer and HBO. Can’t wait for you to see what’s in the can. WG.”

Previously, McBride shared to Collider why he enjoys shows that tell a complete story every season.

“I feel like one of the major weaknesses about television, when it comes to comparing it to film, is that a lot of creators use soap opera plotting, where they’re constantly teasing what’s gonna happen and they just keep pushing the ball down the field, but never really give you the answers, never really give you the closure, and never really pay off the things they’re promising because they all just want you to come back for more. I think it’s definitely more interesting to watch something that feels like it could be complete, after you’ve invested six hours of your time watching something, and that feels like it was a complete ride. I get so annoyed, watching shows that end with cliffhangers and knowing that the next season won’t even come around for a year or so. I won’t even give a shit about what was happening, a year from now. That’s happened to me with a lot of shows that I’ve really liked. I watch it, and by the time it’s over, I just find myself feeling like I wasted my time because the concept or the premise or what I was watching was never paid off.

McBride added, “And so, for me, I want every season to feel like, if you’re investing that time, you’re gonna get a complete story, but that the world’s rich enough that it could keep going on.”

Cast

The whole Gemstone extended family is expected to be back, including John Goodman (Eli), Danny McBride (Jesse), Edi Patterson (Judy), Adam DeVine (Kelvin), Cassidy Freeman (Amber), Tony Cavalero (Keefe), Tim Baltz (BJ), Skyler Gisondo (Gideon), Gregalan Williams (Martin), Valyn Hall (Tiffany), and, of course, Walton Goggins (Baby Billy), who looks incredible.

Release Date

The Righteous Gemstones was part of HBO’s “Coming to Max in 2025” video, along with The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Hacks, but no release date was given. We did, however, get the first footage from the new season.

Folks, we got mustache twins.

Trailer

The closest thing to a trailer for season 4 we’ve seen so far is the “coming in 2025” sizzle reel above. So, instead, it’s time to misbehave.
