Interracial couple share 13 things their family has taught them about race

As the old saying goes, there’s no way to know what another person experiences in life unless you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. But it’s nearly impossible to understand how a person of another race experiences life because it’s impossible to change one’s skin color or cultural background.

People in interracial relationships have a special window into what it’s like to be a different race because they see the differences in how their partner is perceived and treated by others.

Pamela Chandler, a white woman, and her husband Walter, a Black man, from Dayton, Ohio, made a list of 13 things that being in an interracial relationship and having a biracial child has taught them and posted it on Facebook.

The post tremendous feedback from people in interracial relationships and those who had no idea what the experience is like. Upworthy got a chance to talk to Pamela about the post, the interview follows her and Walter’s list.

So as a white woman married to a black man and raising a biracial child I’ve had to unlearn a lot of things. I’ve also…
Posted by The Chandler Crew on Tuesday, June 30, 2020

1.) She drives

I have to drive basically anytime we are leaving the Dayton area. We don’t talk about it each time, we just both know that if we are leaving our general ‘safe’ area and heading to smaller town Ohio roads I’m the one driving.

2.) She does the paperwork

I have to handle store clerks, returns, getting documents signed, anything with any federal building or administrative work, I get further with any type of ‘paperwork’ thing that needs handled, people listen to me and are much more agreeable than with him.

3.) Avoid the greeting card aisle

The chances that we find a Black or Interracial couple on a greeting card are SLIM. Unless you want to give the same Black couple card every year, which we have. There are hundreds of white couples to choose from though!

4.) Walter has to go out of his way to present a friendly face

My husband goes out of his way to be nice and talk to EVERYONE. Not because he’s a people person, but because he has learned that a 6’5 Black man intimidates people and so he overcompensates by being overly friendly so people won’t be afraid of him.

5.) Be ready to show your receipt

If Walter is pushing the cart I always have to have my receipt ready when leaving the store.

6.) “You guys rent, right?”

None of our neighbors thought we owned our home, multiple neighbors stopped my father and asked him if he was the new landlord for us. Because of course, the old white man must have purchased the home. Not only do we own our home, it’s fully paid off, we have no mortgage and we paid for it BY OURSELVES.

7.) Jesus doesn’t see color, but he followers do

It took us YEARS to find a church without racist undertones and low key racist members, YEARS!

via Pamela Chandler

8.) The toy aisle isn’t very inclusive

When doll shopping our daughter gets 25 white options and 1-2 black or mixed race doll options.

9.) Skin tone matters

The same people who stop us daily to say how adorable our daughter is, are the same people who would cross the street if Walter was walking alone.

10.) Stay clear of the stars ‘n bars

We avoid all places with Confederate flags.

11.) Old people are racist

If we go to Bob Evans (or any restaurant that caters to ‘seniors’) too early we are met with a lot of stares, the old racists eat between 4-5 pm.

12.) Walter can’t be alone in the park

When Walter goes to a playground with our daughter he constantly stays by her side, if not he gets stares and people wonder what the ‘big black man’ is doing on the park bench.

13.) A non-controversial statement is, sadly, still controversial

Walter is concerned our Black Lives Matter sign by the door will make us a target when he is not home so he asked me to remove it.

via Pamela Chandler

After Pamela first made the post, she received responses from people all over the world.

“Our experience is so familiar to many people and that really hits you in the gut if you think about how common these things are for people of color,” she told Upworthy.

“I think probably my favorite responses have been from older white people. We have so many older white people reaching out shocked and heartbroken that this is happening to us,” she continued. “But the thing is, this is happening to people of color every day, everywhere.”

Pamela believes that change begins when people “share their experiences with one another so people know it’s happening everywhere.”

“I’m glad the post resonated with people because, at the end of the day, it shows we are all humans just trying to make our way in this world and we all deserve to do that freely and without barriers,” she added.

The first time Pamela experienced racism is when she was driving with Walter down a road in rural Ohio and was pulled over by the police. “Two police officers approached the car, one from each side and a third stayed at the back of the car,” she said. “They all had their hands over their gun holsters as they approached.”

This was all because her license plate light was out.

“Walter was in the passenger seat and they asked him for his license, not me the driver, and they then proceeded to ask him if he had any warrants,” she said. “I’ve never been asked that in my life so I was shocked. We answered all their questions, they ran his license and he was cleared and they let us go after making sure, again that I was ok.”

Experiencing racism as a coupole can also cause problems between partners.

“I’m usually the loudmouth, and he is usually the one telling me to drop it and let it go. I’m coming from a place of privilege when I feel like I can discuss with a white person and get them to see why what they are doing is wrong,” she said.

“Walter is oftentimes coming from a completely different perspective where it can be dangerous to speak up or pointless to speak up, so typically our disagreements come when he wants me to be quiet and I want to scream at the unjustness in the world,” she added.

The incredible response the family has received led them to create a Facebook page called The Chandler Crew where people can “connect with like-minded people all over the globe” as well as a blog.

“At the end of the day we are all just learning and unlearning and learning again how to love each other better,” Pamela said.

Joey Chestnut Continued His Fourth Of July Dominance By Eating A Record 75 Hot Dogs In 10 Minutes

America celebrates two things on the Fourth of July: The ratification of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and Joey Chestnut’s remarkable run in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut’s unwavering dominance was on display once again on Saturday afternoon, when he backed up his reputation of being the greatest competitive eater of all time.

Chestnut partook in a more subdued version of the contest this year, one that was moved from its usual home of the Coney Island boardwalk due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the lack of fans, smaller field of competitors, and indoor setting, Chestnut was able to set a world record by consuming 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. While the mere thought of this gives me terrible indigestion, the accomplishment meant that Chestnut won his 13th title in 14 years and beat his former record, set in 2018, by one hot dog and bun.

“It was hard,” Chestnut said, according to ESPN. “I knew I was fast in the beginning. It was like blistering speed. And the dogs were cooked really well today. Minute six is where I really missed the crowd … and I hit a wall, and it took me a little bit more work to get through it. This is a crazy year, and I’m happy I was able to get a record.”

The competition wasn’t particularly close, as the second-place finisher, Darron Breeden, consumed 42 hot dogs and buns.

In the women’s competition, Miki Sudo continued her own run of dominance over the competition. She, too, set a world record, consuming 48.5 hot dogs and buns. This gave Sudo her seventh Mustard Yellow Belt, breaking a tie with Takeru Kobayashi for the second-most in competition history and placed her behind only Chestnut.

“I feel great,” said Sudo told ESPN. “I’m sure the physical effects will kick in in a little bit. I think the condensed preparation period really lit a fire under me.”

We are morally required to beg you to not try to consume anywhere near as many hot dogs as the professionals are able to eat today. Or any other day, for that matter.

Kacey Musgraves And Ruston Kelly Announce The ‘Painful Decision’ To End Their Marriage After Two Years

A little over two years ago, country singers Kacey Musgraves and Ruston Kelly tied the knot at their Tennessee wedding. The romance between the two was well-documented as Musgraves revealed Kelly was the inspiration behind her 2018 album Golden Hour, one that earned her Album of the Year, Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance, and Best Country Song awards at the 61st Grammy Awards. Unfortunately, in a joint message released by their reps shared by People, Musgraves and Kelly revealed they made the “painful decision” to end their marriage.

“With heavy but hopeful hearts we wanted to put our own thoughts into the air about what’s happening. These kinds of announcements are always met with scrutiny and speculation and we want to stop that before it even starts. We believe that we were put into each other’s lives for a divine reason and have both changed each other infinitely for the better. The love we have for each other goes far beyond the relationship we’ve shared as husband and wife. It’s a soul connection that can never be erased.”

Continuing their statement, the country artists revealed that they both hold no animosity towards each other following the end of their marriage.

“We’ve made this painful decision together — a healthy decision that comes after a very long period of trying the best we can. It simply just didn’t work. Though we are parting ways in marriage, we will remain true friends for the rest of our lives. We hold no blame, anger, or contempt for each other and we ask for privacy and positive wishes for us both as we learn how to navigate through this.”

The news comes after Musgraves was one of many artists to celebrate the life of legendary songwriter John Prine last month in the Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine special.

Bartenders Pick The Best Whiskeys For A Low-Key 4th Of July Weekend

Another rotation around the sun brings us to yet another Fourth of July. Sure, this year’s festivities might seem a little more subdued than in previous years. Hopefully a little more reflective, too. But just because we can’t throw (or attend) a giant, friend, family, and sparkler-filled rager this year, won’t completely stop us from enjoying one of our favorite holidays.

In short: we’ll still be grilling, playing yard games, floating on inner tubes in lakes and rivers, and connecting with people we love. Just with a lot more social distance. A sip of good whiskey is still in play, of course, so we asked some of our favorite bartenders for their favorite expressions to celebrate this low-key Fourth of July.

Uncle Nearest 1856

Bill Myers, bartender at Kimpton Brice Hotel in Savannah, Georgia

There’s good reason that Uncle Nearest whiskey is the most-awarded new whiskey brand in the country. It’s delicious. The liquid dates back to the 1800s when Nathan “Nearest” Green taught a young Jack Daniel how to distill whiskey. It’s a great brand, with an equally great story that dates back to the early days of this country.

Michter’s US1 American Whiskey

Sondre Kasin, principal bartender at Cote in New York City

If you have not tried any of the whiskeys from Michter’s, now is the time. Michter’s US1 American Whiskey is a high-quality whiskey to a reasonable price. Aged on former bourbon casks this whiskey is well balanced, fresh with a lot of depth. You will find classic notes as vanilla, butterscotch and caramel however the great thing is that it is not too sweet. Great for drinking neat but also great for cocktails. Try to make a Old Fashioned with it! Perfect for the holiday.

Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon

Nancy Conaway, bartender at Republic Street Bar in Fort Worth, Texas

Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon. They are truly groundbreaking to the American definition of sustaining community while delivering a fine product that is uniquely its own. Quality with honor.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey

Jennifer Jackson-Keating, co-owner of Island Culture Tiki Bar in Pensacola, Florida

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey – No whiskey screams America like Jack’s signature Old No.7. It’s an iconic brand that was the first registered distillery in the U.S. over 150 years ago. It’s immediately recognizable and is as American as Apple Pie. Pour yourself a Jack & Coke and cheers to “‘Merica”!

Bulleit Bourbon

Eva Al-Gharaballi, bartender at Datz Restaurant Group in Tampa, Florida

Bulleit Bourbon is a spectacular whiskey born in Kentucky. Vanilla and honey aromas followed by a smoky finish. A traditional old fashioned is a signature drink for celebration and mixing up some bitters, simple syrup and Bulleit Bourbon is the way to go. Classic and delicious.

WhistlePig 10

Dean Powers, restaurant and bar manager at Shore Lodge in McCall, Idaho

For this holiday, I like to pull out the big guns. The latest Single Barrel that we bought for Shore Lodge and Whitetail or the Whistle Pig 10 for sure. The balance on this whiskey is superb and comes in just a little hot.

Old Forester 86

Hayden Miller, head bartender at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila in Miami

Old Forester 86 is a classic bourbon that will satisfy all your holiday needs while not breaking the bank. Great as a shot to pair with your summer brew or to end your night with a Manhattan.

Old Hamer Straight Bourbon

Jacob Cantu, tasting room manager at West Fork Whiskey Co. in Indianapolis, Indiana

Originally distilled in the caves of Southern Indiana, Old Hamer Straight Bourbon is a truly All-American whiskey that pays tribute to Indiana’s heritage. A 99 percent corn and 1 percent malted barley mash bill creates a delectable smooth and sweet taste from the start to the finish. An easy drinker for any whiskey lover during the hot months.

Writer’s Picks:

FEW American Whiskey

FEW is one of the most underrated distilleries in America. Its American Whiskey has everything you’d want in a Fourth of July sipper. It’s complex with hints of toasted oak, vanilla, cinnamon, and honey with a subtle kick of pepper at the end.

Buffalo Trace Bourbon

One of America’s best whiskeys, Buffalo Trace is the flagship bourbon of the brand of the same name for a reason. It’s surprisingly inexpensive and well-balanced with hints of honey, vanilla, caramelized sugar, and rich oak.

Report: Gilbert Burns Will Not Fight Kamaru Usman At UFC 251 After A Positive COVID-19 Test

UFC 251 will mark the promotion’s first major event on Fight Island, the facility in Abu Dhabi that has been reserved for fights to go on unabated during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, on Friday night, reports began to circulate that indicate the event’s main event will not go on as planned due to one of its participants testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

John Morgan of MMA Junkie reported that Kamaru Usman, the current UFC welterweight champion, and Gilbert Burns, who was set to challenge him for the belt, did not board the flight to take them to Fight Island.

Soon after, MMA Junkie reported that the issue stemmed from the Burns camp. Usman’s challenger, per MMA Junkie and MMA Fighting, tested positive for the virus, as did the tests for his brother/cornerman and his coach. MMA Junkie reported that Burns trained for the flight in Florida before heading to Las Vegas, where he was expected to board a flight to Abu Dhabi.

The No. 1 priority, is, obviously, that Burns and those in his camp who got the virus are able to shake this as soon as possible, so here’s to hoping that’s the case sooner rather than later. As for the fight with Usman, that is reportedly going to be rescheduled for a later date, and there is no word on whether Usman will fight someone else at the event, which is scheduled to occur on July 12. Should the UFC not find someone to fill in for Burns, there are still two other title fights on the upcoming card: Alexander Volkanovski will put his featherweight title on the line against Max Holloway in a rematch of a fight that took place at UFC 245, while Petr Yan and Jose Aldo will square off for the vacant bantamweight championship.

‘Fortnite’ Will Host A July 4 Conversation On Race Featuring Killer Mike, Jemele Hill, And Lil Baby

Fortnite is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon, and in recent months its impact has on that culture has gone far beyond just gaming. As the title evolves and grows it has turned from a genre-defining battle royale game into something much more, hosting movie trailers for massive movies such as the latest Star Wars and the unreleased Tenet.

The game has also hosted a series of digital concert events, but its July 4 event is about something much more somber and important: the evolving conversation about race and racism in America. On Friday, Epic announced that Fortnite would host We The People, a conversation about race featuring notable BIPOC voices in various media.

“Something has started to change in America,” host Van Jones said in the video previewing the event. We The People will also feature writer/podcaster Jemele Hill, rapper Killer Mike, Lil Baby, and former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth. The event will air at the Island’s Big Screen, where other events such as movie trailers have dropped in the game’s Party Royale mode. Epic says that the event will air right at 8:46 a.m. central time — a somber reminder of the nearly nine minutes a police officer had his knee on George Floyd’s neck in Minneapolis. That event and Floyd’s death in police custody sparked a worldwide protest movement and calls to defund the police.

Fortnite my seem an unconventional location to host a sobering and important conversation, but it speaks to the game’s widespread popularity as well as the significant impact recent protests have had on the national conversation.

Jimmie Johnson Will Miss The Brickyard 400 After A Positive COVID-19 Test

Like every sports league, NASCAR has had to adjust due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Cup Series had to take a months-long hiatus due to the pandemic, but in May, NASCAR was able to return. In that time, the sport had managed to avoid any high-profile cases of the novel coronavirus in its ranks, but that changed on Friday evening, when legendary driver Jimmie Johnson announced he tested positive.

The news of Johnson’s test comes before Sunday’s Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 Powered By Big Machine Records at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He won’t get to participate as a result, and in his place, Justin Allgaier will fill in.

According to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, Johnson’s wife, Chandra, experienced “allergy-like symptoms” that resulted in a positive test. Johnson got a test as a precaution, where he learned he tested positive. Additionally, one member of the Hendrick Motorsports team came into contact with Johnson, and that person is self-quarantining as a result.

Hendrick Motorsports, Johnson, and NASCAR all put out statements in the aftermath of the test. Johnson expressed his disappointment in missing a Cup race for the first time in his decorated career, but made it clear that his top priority is making sure his loved ones are healthy and safe.

Johnson is currently ranked 12th in the NASCAR Cup Series, and while he has not registered a win this season, he has racked up six top-10 finishes and a pair of top-5 finishes.

‘Hamilton’ Apparently Has A Subtle Derek Jeter Easter Egg In It

Independence Day weekend will perhaps be spend more indoors this year for a variety of reasons, as COVID-19 cases surging across the American south has seen some locales dialing back plans to ease lockdown restrictions and travel plans severely diminished compares to past celebrations. One positive for the holiday for many theater buffs was the release of Hamilton on Disney+, and now sports fans have a new detail to look for when they stream the Broadway musical this weekend.

According to a feature on MLB.com, there’s a subtle Derek Jeter reference in the show’s choreography. As Dan Cichalski wrote Friday, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler appeared on “The Hamilcast” podcast and explained that Jeter got a quiet nod in the show’s second act during a song called “It’s Quiet Uptown.”

“There’s … a Derek Jeter Easter egg in that number,” Blankenbuehler begins at about the 51:23 mark of the episode. “Because I love the Yankees and I love to watch baseball with my son. My son would always imitate, when Derek Jeter would take the plate, he would put his arm out in front of him … like he was pointing to the outfield. He would put this long arm out in front of him, like over the pitcher’s head.

The batting stance routine actually made its way into the show, something Blankenbuehler called a tribute to an “icon” meant to show power and respect.

“So when the men are singing to Hamilton, they all stand around him and they all put their hand out, like Derek Jeter. There’s something about the power that Derek Jeter had — of being an icon, of being a superhero, of being a gentleman — that, when the men look at Hamilton, [they’re] in a way remembering when he had power. So they’re doing that move, like putting their arms across the horizon … willing him to have the power he used to have. I like that moment.”

Considering how difficult it was to get a ticket to see the show on Broadway or at its other satellite performances, there’s a good number of folks who have yet to see the show actually performed and only know it from its soundtrack. For those that dive in for the first time or get a second chance to watch the original cast perform the show, there will be plenty to watch for including this small nod to another New York legend.

Even Harry Potter Fan Sites Have Publicly Denounced J.K. Rowling Over Her Anti-Trans Comments

The controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans remarks is showing no signs of slowing down. Nearly a month later, the author is still facing intense criticism for her incendiary views on sex and gender on Twitter, and now, it’s coming from the Harry Potter fan community that once revered Rowling for creating the magical literary world.

Two of the largest Harry Potter fan sites, MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron kicked off July by posting joint statements denouncing Rowling’s views on the transgender communities. Along with scrubbing their sites of her name, they have pledged to limit their coverage of the author and only link to content concerning the Harry Potter Wizarding World. Fan art and memes featuring Rowling will also be banned.

Via Entertainment Weekly:

“Although it is difficult to speak out against someone whose work we have so long admired, it would be wrong not to use our platforms to counteract the harm she has caused. Our stance is firm: Transgender women are women. Transgender men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. Intersex people exist and should not be forced to live in the binary. We stand with Harry Potter fans in these communities, and while we don’t condone the mistreatment JKR has received for airing her opinions about transgender people, we must reject her beliefs.”

The statements arrive just a few days after Rowling rekindled the firestorm around her anti-trans stance by causing a scene on Twitter after she mistakenly assumed fellow author Stephen King supported her views and publicly thanked him. When King later tweeted “Trans women are women” in response to a fan question, Rowling immediately deleted her tweet praising King and unfollowed him on Twitter. It was not the best moment for a situation that was already doing considerable damage to Rowling’s public image, and it seems the fallout isn’t over just yet.
