Director Scott Waugh On The Return Of The Hard R ‘The Expend4bles’

The first Expendables movie was now, somehow, 13 years ago. Sylvester Stallone rounded up a bunch of his old action movie pals from the ’80s and ’90s (as well as contemporary action stars like Jason Statham) and put them all together and made a movie that grossed a quarter of a billion dollars.

By the third movie, though, a franchise that’s kind of a parody of action stars became a parody of itself as the movie seemed to care more about how big the cast was than entertainment. Not to mention the series decided to make the third installment PG-13 instead of R, kind of defeating the point of these in the first place. (Though, that third installment still make over $200 million.)

Now, Scott Waugh (Need for Speed, Hidden Strike) has a leaner and meaner Expendables team (featuring Stallone, Statham, Meagan Fox, 50 Cent, Dolph Lundgren) that is, again, very violent and back to being hard R. Ahead, Waugh explains why the Expendables needed to be an R rated movie and why it’s been his dream all these years to work with Sylvester Stallone.

But first, it should be noted that the Expendables do not play by the rules.

The Expendables do not play by the rules.

Nope. That’s true.

Where did you stand on this franchise before you directed a movie from it?

I enjoyed the candor and the tongue-in-cheek of the Expendables where they’re irreverent. They’re not afraid to make fun of themselves, and they’re great at still being badasses, doing really cool stuff.

Sylvester Stallone seemed to kind of want to hand off this franchise in this one. How did that work? Did you know from the beginning he wouldn’t be in the whole movie? Though he is in it for about 40 minutes, so it’s not a cameo.

Yeah, no, he’s in it for half of it. Look, I had already known that. They sent me the screenplay, so I already knew what his character did. I was kind of in the same vein as you were, which was I already knew he was in it for a lot of it still, but there was a storyline to it that really leans on Lee Christmas’s character – his revenge and redemption story. So I was just thrilled to work with Sly. He’s 77 years old now, so I wanted to check that box before it became an empty box. I was so excited to get that opportunity and just humbled that they would even ask me to come direct franchise. So it was a great opportunity.

I’m pretty obsessed with Sly. And he does have a tendency to take over movies from directors. So I’m guessing he had some opinions on set.

Well, he’s a prolific filmmaker.

Oh yes, he definitely is.

I think Sly and I have a great working relationship, so I understand and I’ve heard these stories. But it was definitely, luckily, different for me. He and I have a mutual respect that he knows I know he created the franchise and I’m going to lean on him, “Hey man, what do you think of this?” And he’s very candid about his opinions, but also I respect his opinion. So it was a collaboration that was fun. Sly and I have been trying to work together for a good five or six years, so this wasn’t the first time we’ve crossed our path.

Oh, what didn’t happen?

Well, he was supposed to do a Hidden Strike with Jackie Chan, the movie I did just came out earlier this year. His schedule had a conflict by the time we were able to get it up. So, unfortunately, he couldn’t come to do the film and we cast John Cena instead. And I just wanted that opportunity, man, to work with Sly. So I was thrilled when this came up.

The Expendables team is smaller this time than in the third one. In the third one, everyone in the world is in that movie.

When I signed on, I said I really wanted to do a throwback to the original Expendables. I really thought that was one of the best ones. I thought Simon West did a great job on 2. I just thought 3 was just a different departure with too many people. And it was PG13, it was softer. So I was excited they wanted to, like you say, contract the amount of characters. You can’t keep track of 30 people. It just kind of gets to the revolving door. And so, I go, I’d rather go a little bit less and focus on each member more. And I think that was the opportunity that we had with Expendables 4. It kind of pays homage back to the original.

When you signed on was it already rated R?

When they called me I said, “Are we going to continue with PG-13 or are you guys going to go back to hard R?” And they were like, “No, 100 percent we know we’re going back to R.” So they had already made the decision before I came on. “Oh yeah, we’re going back to the brand and going back to R and making it right.” So, they had made that decision before I even came on.

Dolph Lundgren’s character, Gunner, his storyline is he’s been sober, but he sucks now. He finally becomes good again once he takes a shot.

Have a drink, right? This is so against being politically correct right now, but it’s just so Dolph Lundgren’s character, Gunner. That character is just so irreverent anyway. And that was really, talking with Dolph, I mean, he had a major influence in that storyline.

Oh, what did he say? He is funny.

Very funny man. And I think he comes across great with that arc in his story. He’s like, “We’ve got to give his character a great arc.” And that was well paid off when he got his big moment.

Is there going to be a fifth movie? Is the plan for Jason Statham to take over as the leader?

Look, I think first and foremost, if the fans want another fifth one, the box office always tells us where the fan base is. So if it looks like there’s a desire for another one, I’m positive there’s a way we could figure it all out.

Who would you want to be on the team?

I mean, honestly, it depends on the story. I think we’ve combed through pretty much all of the ’80s action heroes now and they were the villains too, so like Mel and Jean-Claude, but they all died.

Van Damme played Vilain. I don’t know why I remember that.

So it would be looking at the next script and seeing what actors are out there now that are of the newer breed – or not really ’80s action stars, but ’80s actors, the brand. But, I don’t know. Like I said, I think the tagline, old blood meets new blood is really true and kind of putting all these heroes together. And I feel like if a fifth comes about, it would be awesome to be a part of.

I’m always wondering how Statham feels about these movies. He’s not in the generation of ’80s or ’90s action stars. He’s still kind of in his prime as an action star.

I don’t know. I know that he really loves Expendables. He really does. He enjoys the brand. He really feels like it’s part of his DNA. So he’s just a big quintessential element in it. He’s very funny. Jason’s hilarious. Jason’s sometimes more funny because he’s not trying to be funny, and that makes him hilarious.

Speaking of the rated R thing, I wasn’t really paying attention. I didn’t realize it was back to R until the first knife through the throat…

We’re there.

Also, there’s a plot point where I guy basically offends Stallone so that guy meets a gruesome end. He wasn’t really even a bad guy…

But that’s the beauty part of the brand, right?

He rubbed Sly the wrong way, so he dies in a fire.

Yeah, it’s fine.

Here’s Everything New On HBO And HBO Max For October 2023

TV fans desperately searching for something to watch this Fall should probably pay close attention to Max in October. That’s because the streaming service is welcoming back some fan-favorite series not impacted by the Writer’s and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Shows like The Gilded Age, which returns with more drama as the status quo of the 19th-century Manhattan elite is thrown into chaos. Our Flag Means Death is also back to give us some period-set hijinks on the high seas while Doom Patrol gives its band of motley heroes one final world-saving mission.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Max this month.

The Gilded Age: Season 2 (streaming 10/29)

A long hiatus means this Americanized version of Downton Abbey — focused on the industrial golden age of New York City — is returning with plenty of drama planned for its main players. The Russells continue to upend high society with their progressive social scheme why the Astors try to preserve the status quo and the younger gen ( Peggy and Marian) begins taking a keen interest in activism.

Our Flag Means Death: Season 2 (streaming 10/5)

Rhys Darby is back as 18th-century upper-crust-dandy-turned-wannabe-pirate Stede Bonnet in season two of this absurdist comedy. After choosing to rescue his crew, Stede is at odds with Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) whose renewed bad-boy phase puts a severe wrench in their budding love story.

Doom Patrol: Season 4 (streaming 10/12)

The final season of this delightfully weird DC superhero dramedy tasks the Doom patrol with confronting their worst fears and allying with some familiar faces in order to defeat Immortus and save the world. No pressure.

Eight Can’t-Miss Colorado Breweries To Visit This Fall

The Uproxx 2023 Fall Travel Hot List is live! Visit here for the full experience!

To say that Colorado is a beer destination is a ridiculous understatement. With beer-saturated cities like Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins (as well as a few lesser-known beer towns), the Centennial State is home to more than 400 breweries. If you’re planning a road trip to drink hoppy IPAs, crisp lagers, rich stouts, and other incredible beers this fall, it would behoove you to add Colorado to your list of states to visit.

Honestly, with so many high-quality breweries, you might want to make the Rocky Mountain state your only stop. Seriously.

Not only is the state loaded with award-winning, notable breweries, but it’s also a great state for fall activities. Our National Parks expert, Emily Ventures, has often illustrated how Colorado is the perfect fall adventure spot for anyone who enjoys mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and pretty much any outdoor activity. After you’re done getting your heart pumping in the great outdoors, stop by a brewery for a pint, a flight, or to grab some bottles, cans, or a growler to go.

Alas, with all of the breweries in this mountainous state, you might be having a difficult time picking the ones actually worth visiting. Lucky for you, we did the work for you. Below, you’ll find eight of our favorite Colorado breweries to visit in the fall (or any time of year). Keep scrolling to see them all.

Ska Brewing – Durango

Ska Brewing
Ska Brewing

Even if you don’t enjoy 90s music with loud horns throughout, you can still enjoy beer made at the brewery named in its honor. Opened in 1995 (when ska music was king), Ska Brewing is located in Durango, Colorado. Home to an onsite restaurant, outdoor beer garden, and a ton of award-winning beers. You can feel great about drinking here, too — Ska is one of the most sustainable breweries in America.

What To Drink:

While you can’t go wrong with any of the various beers (especially limited-edition brews), we suggest trying its Modus Hoperandi. This 6.8% ABV IPA is known for its citrus, piney, and pleasantly bitter flavor profile.

Odell Brewing Company – Fort Collins

Built in 1994, Odell Brewing Company is located in the Front Range of Northern Colorado in Fort Collins. The site features a 125-barrel brewhouse, multiple fermentation cellars, a tap room to sample all of the award-winning brews, and even an outdoor beer garden to enjoy pale ales, IPAs, stouts, and other beers while you enjoy the fall weather.

While Odell doesn’t serve food, there are daily food trucks featuring mouthwatering food to pair with your favorite beer.

What To Drink:

On early fall days, we’re not quite ready to dive right into stouts and porters. That’s why a double IPA like Odell Myrcenary is great. This 9.3% IPA is citrus and tropical fruit-filled and has a piney, dank finish that leaves you wanting more.

Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project – Denver

Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project

Established in 2010, Crooked Stave has made a big name for itself in the craft beer world in the decade-plus since. The Denver brewery’s taproom features a rotating list of more than twenty beers. There’s something for every palate from pilsners, IPAs, sours (the brewery is well-known for its “Brettanomyces Project”), Baltic porters, and this time of year even a pumpkin ale. There’s also a taproom in Fort Collins if you find yourself there visiting other breweries on this list.

What To Drink:

If you’re visiting a brewery known for its sours, you have to try one, right? Well, we suggest its 4% ABV Sour Rosé. This flavorful sour ale was aged in oak with raspberries and blueberries.

Dry Dock Brewing Co – Aurora

This award-winning brewery located in Aurora has won multiple awards since its inception in 2005, including “Small Brewing Company of The Year” at the Great American Beer Festival in 2009. Its name is a reference to the dry dock where a boat is built and maintained. This nautical-themed brewery makes myriad beers including its “Home Fleet” featuring Apricot Blonde, Tropical Sour, Breakwater Pale Ale, and other beers.

What To Drink:

While you’re going to want to sample as many of Dry Dock’s beers as humanly possible, we suggest starting with its Amber Ale if you’re visiting this fall. This 5.8% banger won a gold medal at The Great American Beer Festival. It’s known for its toasted malts, nutty sweetness, caramel, and fruity, yeasty finish.

Bierstadt Lagerhaus – Denver

Bierstadt Lagerhaus
Bierstadt Lagerhaus

If you were to ask brewers and avid beer drinkers to tell you their favorite European-style American craft breweries you’d get a lot of people talking about Denver’s Bierstadt Lagerhaus. Well-known for its Slow Pour Pils, Helles, Dunkel, and other beers, Bierstadt Lagerhaus also has a beer hall featuring live music and over-the-top events like professional wrestling. There’s also a more laid-back taproom where you can sample its beers and enjoy German-influenced food like currywurst or a giant Bavarian pretzel.

What To Drink:

If you’re visiting Bierstadt Lagerhaus, you have to try the beer the brewery is most famous for — Slow Pour Pils. Made to honor Northern German pilsners, it’s known for its crisp, floral, lightly bitter flavor profile. Pair it with Schnitzel and you have the makings of a great evening.

WeldWerks Brewing Co. – Greeley

WeldWerks Brewing Co.
WeldWerks Brewing Co.

While it’s only been open since 2015, Greeley’s WeldWerks is already a nationally known Colorado-based brewery thanks in large part to its hazy, juicy, citrus-filled Juicy Bits IPA. But the brewery has a slew of other great beers, including thirty on tap. Add to that, there’s an on-site kitchen featuring shareable French fries, flautas, bratwurst, cheeseburgers, and even barbacoa tacos.

What To Drink:

After you try a pint of the brewery’s flagship Juice Bits IPA, we suggest enjoying Summer S’mores Stout. This milk stout featuring vanilla beans, milk chocolate chips, marshmallows, and graham crackers will make you want to have one last fall campfire before the weather turns cold.

Left Hand Brewing Company – Longmont

Left Hand is a big name in the American beer world (not just in Colorado). Created to be like classic European public houses, Left Hand’s tasting room has been serving flights and pints since 1993 (way before the beer boom). The 30 rotating taps include its iconic Milk Stout, Breezy Does It (passion fruit sour ale), Galactic Cowboy (imperial stout), Sawtooth Amber Ale, and many more. They also serve wine, canned cocktails, soda, and even CBD beverages.

The Denver location features rotating beers, a full bar, and a shareable food menu.

What To Drink:

While you can’t go wrong with Left Hand’s well-known Milk Stout Nitro, we suggest going a little out of bounds and sampling its Peanut Butter Milk Stout Nitro. This milk stout brewed with peanuts has flavors of milk chocolate, peanut butter, Coffee, and toasted vanilla beans.

Great Divide Brewing Company – Denver

Another well-known brewery absolutely worth visiting if you’re in the Mile High City is Great Divide. While it has multiple locations, we suggest visiting its RiNo: Barrel Bar & Barrel Cellar in Denver. Located in the city’s River North District, it’s not only known for its majestic mountain views but its massive list of beers, including limited releases, barrel-aged beers, and year-long favorites.

What To Drink:

As the weather remains warm in the fall, we suggest trying its popular Collette Farmhouse Ale. This 7.3% ABV Saison is brewed with rice, wheat, and barley before being fermented at high temperatures with a blend of four yeast strains. It’s known for its lightly sour, tart, very fruity, flavor profile.

This mesmerizing dance routine is a cultural phenomenon in China and with good reason

In a world full of jaw-dropping dance routines, the Thousand Hand Guan Yin manages to captivate like no other.

A large group of performers in identical golden costumes flow together in synchronized movement so seamlessly that it appears as though one entity with several arms is moving about space.

That entity is Guan Yin, a goddess of compassion who, according to Buddhist legend, will never rest in nirvana as long as any sentient being suffers on Earth.

Guan Yin is often depicted with a thousand arms, having an eye in the palm of each hand, to symbolize an omnipresent mother figure always witnessing the pain of humanity with endless amounts of mercy, extending out one of her many arms to lend a helping hand.

The performers emulate this with intricate, delicate hand gestures while standing very close to one another, resulting in a mesmerizing optical illusion.

But the dance in and of itself isn’t the most remarkable thing about this piece—each of the performers are hearing impaired.

Renowned Chinese choreographer Zhang Jigang (also known for large scale numbers like 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics opening ceremony) created the piece with The China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe back in 1987 to further emphasize inclusivity and compassion.

Thousand Hand Guan Yin, dance, famous dances

While the first iteration consisted of around 20 performers, that number has exponentially increased to between 60-80. Knowing that each of these dancers were able to sync up so flawlessly without relying on music really does make it all the more powerful.

Today, the Thousand Hand Guan Yin remains one of China’s most well known and most beloved dance routines. And thanks to the internet, we too can be inspired by its wondrous spectacle and important message.

People were asked why they were unfaithful and the answers are eye opening and insightful

Infidelity is devastating for relationships. When you find out a partner has been unfaithful it can feel like a bomb went off in the middle of your living room while you were just trying to drink your morning coffee. The carnage from an affair can be extensive, especially if there are children involved.

But no matter what circumstances the infidelity happened, the partner who was on the receiving end of the betrayal often wonders why? It can send some people in a spiral of shame and self blame for the actions of their partners which feel debilitating. Oftentimes, the betrayed partner never feels like they get a truthful answer from their partners but one Reddit user decided to invite partners that have strayed to explain why they cheated.

Surprisingly, many of the answers were extremely insightful seemingly showing extraordinary growth since that time in their lives. There was also a lot of remorse expressed for their previous harmful behaviors.

“When you grow up being in turn neglected and told you’re not good enough, validation is like a drug, and intimacy is the ultimate validation. Sooooo much therapy to undo this,” one person reveals.

“Insecurity. I was always on the look out for someone who would make me feel more desirable than the last. Once I grew up emotionally, I realised [sic] what a POS I was & the hurt it caused. Hard to live with tbh. Edit. Can I just make it clear I was not a serial adulterer… It was a youthful lack of judgement,” another person writes.

“Unbridled ego, unsatisfying regular sex life, and a girl who threw herself at me. I was an idiot, I acted like an a*****e, and I will regret it the rest of my life,” one commenter says before continuing. “It was a hard truth to face. It was a dark time in my life where my ego and my immaturity caused me to hurt several people I loved.”

“Because I chose a cowardly and easy path. Instead of going to therapy and ending my toxic relationship, I cheated on them with someone who I had convinced myself I was in love with, and loved me. Turns out, breaking up with someone is a lot less harmful to everyone involved than cheating,” someone else writes.

An interesting theme that someone who has experienced the pain of infidelity may notice is that there’s no blame placed on the betrayed partner. The people that answered this prompt admit that the affair was completely within their control and most say they learned from it.

Dr. Kathy Nickerson is a licensed clinical psychologist that specializes in affair recovery, she’s also the author of the book The Courage to Stay: How to Heal from an Affair and Save Your Marriage. Nickerson has teamed up with other mental health professionals to research why people have affairs and has been revealing the earliest results on her TikTok page.

One of the preliminary results falls in line with what many of the commenters were sharing on the Reddit post, a lot of people that cheat are in some sort of emotional pain.

“In our recent affairs survey, we asked over 1400 cheating partners, was an affair a painkiller,” Nickerson says, revealing that 64.8% of women and 59.9% of men agreed or strongly agreed with the affair being a painkiller. When asking “did you choose the affair to cope with emotional pain,” 68.2% of women and 70.2% of men answered in the affirmative.

@drkathynickerson

The majority of people who responded to our 2023 affair survey said that they agreed that affairs are a painkiller. When we look at this data based on gender, we see some interesting differences. What are your thoughts about this? @Rece affair recovery🦄 @Rebecca Stone #affair #infidelityrecovery #extramaritalaffair #healingafteranaffair #affairrecovery #infidelityinamarriage #cheatingwife #cheatinghusbands #infidelityrecovery #emotionalaffair #healingfrominfidelity #infidelity #infidelityadvice

In another video, Nickerson revealed that the saying, “once a cheater always a cheater” may actually be inaccurate based on the preliminary research results. According to the initial survey for cheating partners, 59.89% reported only having one affair.

If there’s one take away from the eye opening responses in the Reddit post and the early research results from Nickerson, it’s that cheating has very little to do with the person being cheated on and people don’t always cheat again. You can follow along with Nickerson’s research here, and if you’re healing from infidelity while choosing to stay partnered, you can buy her book here.

Mom has the perfect response to teen son who refuses to do ‘girl’ chores

A 41-year-old mom with 3 boys, 12-year-old twins, and a 10-year-old, pays them $10 daily to do their chores. However, their pay is deducted $10 if they miss a day. The boys have to do their tasks 5 days a week, although it doesn’t matter which days they choose to work.

“This system has worked swimmingly for us since it started, the boys have always complied with completing their chores,” the mom wrote on Reddit.

Her 12-year-old son was getting ready to play Fortnite with a friend and told him he’d be ready in 15 minutes once he finished his chores. When the boys started playing the game, he told the friend he was in charge of dusting and sweeping the stairs, to which the friend responded, “It’s a good thing my parents don’t make me do girl chores.”

After learning what the friend said, the mom told her son that chores are genderless.

“I spoke with my son and explained to him that knowing how to clean was not specific to any gender, that it was a life skill everyone needed to know. I also told him that I understood that other families functioned differently; however, in our family, everyone did an equal share,” she wrote.

Over the next 3 days, the boy refused to do his “girl” chores. So, when allowance day came, the two brothers who did theirs received $50, but the 12-year-old who refused only got $20. The mom and the boy’s father are divorced, so the 12-year-old called his dad to complain that he got $30 less, and the dad took his side.

“My ex-husband then proceeded to call me and tell me that I’m in the wrong for only giving him $20 and to imagine how it makes him feel that his brothers got more than he did. I explained to him that our other sons actually did their chores for all 5 days, so they were rewarded accordingly,” the mother wrote. “And assured him that if he had decided to start giving the boys an allowance, then he can run allowance however he wanted, but this was ultimately the system I had come up with.”

She added that her husband said she is being “insensitive” and “humiliating” their son.

The mom asked Reddit’s AITA subforum if she was in the wrong, and the commenters unanimously agreed that she was right. Other commenters noted that she made a smart decision leaving her ex-husband because he took the side of his child, who refused to do work for sexist reasons.

The only problem the commenters had was that the mom was being a little too generous by giving them $50 a week. That’s $600 a month for 3 kids.

“It’s the real world, you don’t do your job, you don’t get paid, and I actually think $10 a day is pretty generous for allowance,” Longjumping-Gur-6581 wrote. “$10/day is insane for that age,” fIumpf added.

“You’re not taking money out of your son’s allowance, you’re not paying him for services not rendered,” Excitedorca wrote. “The sexist, misogynistic reasons behind not completing the chores need to be corrected and that won’t happen by rewarding it.”

This Year’s ‘Secret Michter’s’ Has Officially Hit Shelves — Here’s Our Full Review

Michter’s remains one of the best premium whiskey brands out there. The secret that they’ve wisely unlocked is that you can find their core line on store shelves across the country (and the world actually) for a fair price while their elite and limited edition bottles are just barely within reach (with some just out of reach enough to be enigmatic). As such, they cover all the bases in the whiskey world with high-quality products at each of those levels that never disappoint.

Two bottles that are considered by insiders and whiskey fans alike as “secret Michter’s” fall right in the middle of the brand’s spectrum — Bomberger’s Declaration and Shenk’s Homestead. The former is a classic bourbon that’s aged in special Chinquapin oak barrels while the latter is a sour mash whiskey (blend of bourbon and rye) that highlights one of Michter’s greatest strengths — good sour mash whiskey that doesn’t need to be bourbon or rye on the label. The “secret” here is that these aren’t labeled as “Michter’s” expressions but they carry the same attention to detail in every moment of the process, thanks to Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. Both are revered legends in the whiskey community.

These two bottles are released once a year in the fall. Each year the batches vary, depending on how the barrels were doing that year. Moreover, these are high-end limited releases, which means that you can find these but you’re going to have to pay a larger price for them (but rarely over MSRP). Okay, that’s enough preamble, let’s get into what’s in these bottles.

Bomberger’s Declaration Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 2023 Release

Bomberger's Declaration Bourbon
Michter

ABV: 54%

Average Price: $179

The Whiskey:

This whiskey heralds back to Michter’s historical roots in the 19th century before the brand was even called “Michter’s.” The old Bomberger’s Distillery in Pennsylvania is where the brand started way back in the day (1753). The whiskey in the bottle is rendered from a very small batch of bourbons that were aged in Chinquapin oak. The staves for that barrel were air-dried for three years before coppering, charring, and filling. The Kentucky bourbon is then bottled in an extremely small batch that yields around 2,000 bottles per year.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet mashed grains — think a bowl of Cream of Wheat cut with butter and molasses — mix with sticky toffee pudding, old saddle leather, old cellar beams, and sweet cinnamon with a hint of candied orange and dark chocolate next to luscious eggnog with a flake of salt.

Palate: The palate is super creamy with a crème brûlée feel that leads to soft winter spices, dry cedar, and orange chocolates with a hint of pear-brandy-soaked marzipan in the background.

Finish: The end has a creamed honey vibe next to brandy-soaked figs and rum-soaked prunes with fresh chewing tobacco and salted dark chocolate leading back to dark chocolate and old cellar floors with a touch of smoldering orchard bark.

Bottom Line:

This is a quintessential Kentucky sipping whiskey. The pour rewards you for taking it slow, re-nosing, adding water, and letting bloom in the glass. Along that journey, you’ll find deeper notes of Christmas nutcakes, oatmeal raisin cookies, and soft senses of fall leaves in fallow orchards on a rainy day with a hint of smoldering oak. It’s a grand pour of whiskey.

Ranking:

96/100 — This is damn near perfect.

Where To Buy:

High-end liquor stores will have it behind the glass between now and the end of the year. Some stores without state control boards will charge more for it (I’ve seen it for $249 and $399 in some markets) but that’s rarer with this one.

You’ll also be able to find these at very good whiskey bars and restaurants in the U.S. and Europe especially. So grab a slow pour over a large cube and get a sense of it and then go track down your own bottle.

Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey Small Batch 2023 Release

Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash
Michter

ABV: 45.6%

Average Price: $179

The Whiskey:

This whiskey is made with a fair amount of rye whiskey over a bit of bourbon in a traditional sour mash style. 2023’s release varied with the use of malted rye in the mash bill, adding an extra layer of malty depth. The whiskey was then aged in specially made toasted French oak that spent 24 months seasoning in France before they were made with barrels that spent 18 months air-drying in Kentucky before they were coppered. The barrels were all batched and bottled with just a touch of Kentucky limestone water.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Soft boot leather, dried and candied orange, spiced Christmas cake, fresh vanilla beans, sultanas, and a hint of fresh firewood round out the nose with a hint of almost sweet oak char and simmering molasses cut with almond kissed with dark citrus oils.

Palate: The palate has a nice sweet spiciness like a box of Red Hots next to allspice, clove, and orange with rummy raisins, nutmeg-heavy eggnog, and a whisper of oily espresso bean sneaking in late before a bold yet measured winter spice bark sharpness arrives.

Finish: The end marries the orange oils to soft cedar notes with a woody spiciness next to soft notes of sweet cinnamon, stewed plums, minced meat pies, and brandied cherries layered with chewy tobacco leaves over a lush and creamy finish.

Bottom Line:

This is another great sipper. Pouring it over a rock will add even more creaminess with the almond taking on rich marzipan with a hint of rose water and even some orange blossom with a whisper of peaches and cream sneaking in. Then it jukes towards anise and almost bitter dark chocolate-covered espresso. It’s fascinatingly complex.

While I do like sipping this one slowly on a lazy afternoon, this also makes a killer whiskey-forward cocktail. Think of a dark and fun Manhattan or a really good Sazerac with a nice cognac and absinthe.

Ranking:

89/100 — This is a very good whiskey (high B+ all day!). The only knock is that water (or ice) helps this one really pop compared to the neat pour.

Where To Buy:

This is also going to be available at high-end liquor stores behind the glass. Generally speaking, this will be a tad harder to find since it’s not a “bourbon” but it should be there right next to the Bomberger’s in most cases.

You’ll also be able to get a good pour of this at a great whiskey bar or restaurant with a killer whiskey list. Great bartenders will be making innovative and fun cocktails with it too.

‘The View’s Alyssa Farah Griffin Has Accused John Fetterman Of Acting Like Marjorie Taylor Greene

For the second time this week, John Fetterman made it into the Hot Topics section of The View, and once again, the ladies are divided on the Pennsylvania senator. Fetterman has been a prominent target for the right thanks Majority Leader Chuck Schumer loosening the Senate dress code to accommodate Fetterman’s penchant for wearing hoodies and gym shorts.

Instead of focusing on actual policy, the usual rabble-rousers like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert have lobbed attacks at Fetterman on social media, and he’s fired right back. However, The View‘s Alyssa Farah Griffin isn’t a fan of Fetterman’s retorts, particularly his latest zinger, which involved poking fun at Boebert’s now infamous Beetlejuice groping scandal.

“I figure if I take up vaping and grabbing the hog during a live musical, they’ll make me a folk hero,” Fetterman tweeted in response to a Fox News report.

Via The Wrap:

“He spends his time on his official Senate Twitter account engaging in some, frankly, Marjorie Taylor Greene-like behavior,” Farah Griffin chided. “He’s referring to male genitalia, he’s calling Republican[s] derogatory names. And then his personal Twitter, all day, is just attacking people and trolling.”

She continued, “Congress has some things they should be doing. Why don’t we fund the government, why don’t we pass some common sense, you know, whether it’s gun reforms, let’s do things to boost the economy. Why are our senators acting like teenage girls?”

While fellow Republican Ana Navarro initially agreed with Griffin that the “decorum of the Senate” is being eroded, she ultimately defended Fetterman for giving it right back to his detractors.

“He’s not initiating any of those exchanges. He’s clapping back at stuff that people are saying to him,” Navarro said, prompting Sunny Hostin to jump in. “Everybody loves a good clapback!” she said.
