In Minnesota, there’s plenty of excitement coming out of this summer where Anthony Edwards took on a starring role for Team USA and seems on the precipice of another leap. Karl-Anthony Towns being back healthy (and also playing well for the Dominican Republic) likewise bodes well for a team that desperately needs some time on court together to figure out how to coexist. The Towns-Rudy Gobert combo was shaky last year in limited minutes, but this is a solid roster with some very good high-end talent and if they can get into a rhythm and see Edwards take that leap, these ratings might end up looking a touch low.

The Thunder took a major step last season, earning a Play-In spot thanks in large part to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s leap into superstardom. He’s continued that this summer in the FIBA World Cup and, if anything, his 93 overall might need an upgrade as this season goes on. The Thunder have a ton of young talent, but the guy that holds the key to how good they can be is Chet Holmgren. Last year’s No. 2 overall pick missed all of last season with a foot injury and given the Thunder’s issues at center, if he can pop in the way some think he can, Oklahoma City could take another stride into the playoff convo out West. In 2K, his combination with SGA figures to be extremely fun and you can mix and match a number of fascinating wing combinations between them.

The Phoenix Suns figure to be a fan favorite in 2K because they have three of the most dynamic scorers in basketball in Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. In the real world, they have to show they can figure out how to balance each other and fit together (and get enough from the rest of the roster), but in 2K, it’s hard to find a more fun offensive experience than playing as the Suns. Defense is the question in 2K, as the Suns are dinged for an 89 defensive rating which holds them down at a 94 overall, as Durant and Deandre Ayton aren’t enough to sell the folks at 2K that this team can play at a high level on that end — as an aside, Bol Bol’s overall rating might be the wildest in the game compared to actual on court production.

In San Antonio, everything about this upcoming season is about Victor Wembanyama. In 2K, he earned the highest rating ever for a rookie at 84 overall, and the hype around him is immense. The question is just how good he is immediately, as Summer League showed there’s still plenty of work to do to refine his game, as well as how much support he has around him from a very young roster. The Spurs might end up being pretty bad once again in the real world, but also should be more fun to watch (and play as in 2K) thanks to Wemby’s presence.

No team enters the 2023-24 season with a more overhauled roster than the Houston Rockets, who were the lone team that really attacked the free agent market this summer. The result was adding Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jock Landale, and Jeff Green to a young roster filled with fascinating talent that has never come together into a cohesive unit. Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason are all candidates to take a leap next year, but its rare for a team to get that from all of their youngsters at once. With Ime Udoka now in charge, they’ll look to establish a defensive identity that provides some floor balance to their tremendous offensive potential in hopes that wins will follow.

In Toronto, despite another summer full of trade rumors, most of their core group is back once again. Fred VanVleet’s departure left them scrambling to fill their point guard position, ending up with Dennis Schroder, but otherwise this is mostly the same roster that scuffled to the East’s 9-seed a year ago. The Raptors are the rare team in 2K to earn a higher defensive rating than offensive rating, which is both accurate and will probably not make them a particularly popular 2K team — playing good defense is not nearly as fun in a video game as being able to get buckets.

The Pistons are among the teams at the bottom of the 2K team ratings, which isn’t a surprise for a team coming off of having the league’s worst record. Cade Cunningham’s return is the lead storyline of the season in Detroit, but behind that is how their young talent will sort itself out. There are a number of interesting players on this roster, from Jaden Ivey and Ausar Thompson on the perimeter to their glut of castoff big men, but how it all fits together is not obvious on either end of the floor. We’ll see if there is a leap to be had from this young roster, but Monty Williams will certainly have his hands full trying to pull all the right strings to make the Pistons work.

The New Orleans Pelicans feature one of the most exciting potential rosters in the league and, especially, in 2K, with Zion Williamson as an unstoppable force when he’s on the floor, Brandon Ingram as a dynamic scorer, and an intriguing mix of veterans and young talent around them. The big question facing the Pelicans is not new to them, as their ability to threaten the West playoff race will almost entirely be determined by health. Keeping Williamson on the floor has proved extremely difficult, Ingram has had his own injury issues, and they’re going to start the season without the services of their best 3-and-D wing as Trey Murphy III recovers from a knee injury. In the world of 2K, Pelicans fans can see what the full potential of this roster is when all together, and then hope to finally get the chance to see that in real life this season.

The Indiana Pacers come into this season with a fascinating roster, headlined by Tyrese Haliburton who was one of last year’s breakout stars. Bruce Brown joins the Pacers fresh off a title with the Nuggets and Myles Turner, in spite of annual trade rumors, is back with a new extension. The question for Indiana is what kind of strides will they see from youngsters like Bennedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard, both of whom made All-Rookie teams a year ago, and what they can cobble together defensively this season. The folks at 2K dinged them considerably for their defense, which struggles to slow opponents despite Turner’s presence at the rim, and their ability to shore up that end of the floor will determine if they take a leap into the playoff conversation in the East.

The defending champion Denver Nuggets will enter the 2023-24 season with the same starting lineup that dominated in both the regular season and postseason, led by the dynamic two-man game of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. The question for Denver coming off of the franchise’s first title lie within the bench unit, as Bruce Brown is now in Indiana and Jeff Green is now in Houston, meaning two of their first three players off the bench from last year now must be replaced. Christian Braun and Peyton Watson figure to take on a large portion of that responsibility, while Zeke Nnaji and Justin Holiday are also potential minutes eaters. The drop-off to the bench unit is significant enough to have the Nuggets possibly underrated by the 2K folks, as they boast just a 93 OVR rating, largely due to their defensive question marks.
