Dan Auerbach is on the search for a bright light on The Arcs’ new single, “Sunshine.” Comprised of Auerbach, who is also the lead vocalist and guitarist of The Black Keys, as well as Leon Michels, Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and Richard Swift, who died in 2018, their newest track contains background vocals and percussion from the latter, as it was written and recorded shortly before his death.

“Tell me ’cause I wanna know / In Louisiana, our lucks gettin’ low / Been workin’ / We’re weak in the knees, ’bout to bust / Now won’t you make some time for us,” sings Auerbach in the song’s opening verse.

The song is featured on The Arcs’ upcoming second album, Electrophonic Chronic, which arrives later this month. According to Auerbach, making this album was a form of catharsis as he grieved Swift’s untimely death.

“This new record is all about honoring Swift,” Auerbach said in a statement. “It’s a way for us to say goodbye to him, by revisiting him playing and, laughing, singing. It was heavy at times, but I think it was really helpful to do it.”

After Zack Snyder recently converted Stephen Colbert’s talk show into an action-packed adventure, Colbert invited M. Night Shyamalan to put his own eerie spin on the format, and the twisty filmmaker delivered all the way to the shocking end.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert isn’t the obvious candidate for thrilling psychodrama, what with its well-lit stage and staid formula where people sit on a couch and talk about whatever movie they just made. Even “Movie” Night Shyamalan isn’t immune to namedropping his series Servant during his appearance. Yet what he does for the show is a revelation. The new Colbert is infused with grim unease, unsettling creatures, well-timed Goodfellas references, and a hair-raising cameo. In short, committing to this as a full concept instead of a bit would require Colbert to go into gonzo Chris Gethard comedic territory that would delightfully alienate all of his regular viewers.

Also, the budget for alien costumes would shoot right through the roof. It might be cheaper to get real aliens, but there’s enough much bottled water on set to guarantee a nasty lawsuit.

Curiously, Shyamalan didn’t mention that he has a movie in theaters on February 3rd. Knock at the Cabin, starring Dave Bautista, is based on the Paul Tremblay book where a vacationing family is forced to make impossible choices to avoid the end of the world from happening. Whether it’s a hit or not, Shyamalan will always have a fallback job directing The Late Show.

Great news for everyone who has had a healthy blood pressure readout so far this year: The Bear is returning this summer with a bigger season. FX ordered 10 episodes instead of 8, so there are bonus chances to pop the stress ball you squeeze while watching.

At the end of the first season, the gang behind The Original Beef of Chicagoland had closed down in order to revamp completely. No longer a flavor-packed sandwich joint, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), and the rest want to turn their spot into something worthy of their Michelin-starred mannerisms.

So far, showrunner Christopher Storer and FX have been frustratingly silent about the exact date we can expect The Bear to return. That trend continues!

“I know this sounds like I’m avoiding the question but part of the reason why I even wanted to make the show in the first place was that I probably become unhealthily obsessed with time in a lot of instances that created anxiety,” Storer said.

“And there’s no better setting than a restaurant for the pressures of that. In terms of Season 2, you’re gonna see them build a restaurant,” he continued. “They think they’re starting from a healthy place like a lot of other businesses but it just creates the same amount of problems and the same amount of headaches every day. So we see them have to step up in different ways. In some ways, they’ll regress but hopefully, they’ll ultimately come back together to open this thing by a very specific date.”

For now, we only have a vague date, but at least it’s not too far away.

Last night, Jack White made another crossover appearance on A&E’s hit show, American Pickers. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, the current host, Mike Wolfe, travels around America looking for rare artifacts — which he will either keep for a collection or sell for profit.

“We’re looking for amazing things buried in people’s garages and barns,” the show’s introduction explains. “What most people see as junk, we see as dollar signs. We’ll buy anything we think we can make a buck on. Each item we pick has a history all its own. And the people we meet? Well, they’re a breed all their own.”

White, who had previously been on the show back in 2012, first tried to sell a photobooth and jukebox from his Nashville-based Third Man Records. He uploaded a trailer for the new episode to his Instagram.

“Jack White wants us to stop by,” the hosts said in the clip.

“Check it out,” White greeted them, showing off an ice cream-style van filled with some vintage music tech equipment inside. “This is a mobile recording truck. We want to bring it back to life. We want to make it a studio on wheels again.

“This is incredible. We’re reviving some serious music history here,” one of the hosts added.

“I’m excited,” the other also replied.

In a sprawling profile for Variety, horror legend John Carpenter revealed that one of the stars of Memoirs of an Invisible Man made him want to stop making movies.

“It gave me a chance to make a quasi-serious movie,” Carpenter said. “But Chevy Chase, Sam Neill — who I love and had a longtime friendship with — and Warner Bros. … I worked for them, and it was pleasant. No, it wasn’t pleasant at all. I’m lying to you. It was a horror show. I really wanted to quit the business after that movie. God, I don’t want to talk about why, but let’s just say there were personalities on that film … he shall not be named who needs to be killed. No, no, no, that’s terrible. He needs to be set on fire. No, no, no. Anyway, it’s all fine. I survived it.”

So it’s either Sam Neill — with whom Carpenter made In the Mouth of Madness right afterward and crafted a lifelong bond with — or Chevy Chase — with whom he did not. You get two guesses and one of them doesn’t count.

As ever, this is the kind of story about Chase that’s become so rote that even Chase probably won’t bat an eye. Thus, let’s appreciate the story as a PSA to go check out Memoirs of an Invisible Man, a criminally underseen goofball gem that features Neill being held hostage by a floating gun (and other fantastic special effects).

Let’s also appreciate that Carpenter didn’t let that bad experience stop him from making more movies.

The Kid Laroi is back. Today (January 12), the Australian rapper teased his upcoming debut album The First Time with a cinematic new trailer.

“You never forget the first time,” he says in the clip. “The first time you fall in love. The first time you get caught. The first time you feel shame. The first real kiss.” Throughout the video are clips of him falling into a pool, skateboarding, smoking a cigarette, and sharing a kiss, replicating an A24 aesthetic.

Though he has not announced the release date for the album yet, fans will soon get a taste of it next week, as he revealed that the first single from the album drops a week from today.

It’s hard to believe this is only The Kid Laroi’s first album, as he has garnered much popularity over the past few years with his F*ck Love mixtape series. These mixtapes spawned hit singles like “Without You” and the Justin Bieber-assisted “Stay,” both of which have gone viral on TikTok.

If his debut album is anything like his mixtapes, fans are in for a real treat.

In only a short amount of time, AI-generated art has made a huge (and seemingly lasting) impact on our world. Whether that impact is entirely a positive one is up for debate, but it has undeniably pushed boundaries of what’s possible when it comes to blending creative imagination and advanced technology.

Previously, photographer and lawyer Alper Yesiltas wowed us with hyperrealistic portraits of celebrities who passed away at a young age, exploring what they might look like “if nothing had happened.”

He then took stars of a bygone era—like Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin—and placed them into our modern world for a series called “Thisness.”

This time, Yesiltas imagines what certain younger icons might look like many years into the future. Decades, even. That’s right—Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and more, with all the wrinkles that come with age.

He calls this series “Young Age(d).”

Producing images that feel this authentic is no easy process. Multiple editing programs, a photo-enhancing software called Remini and meticulous attention to detail were required to achieve the look.

Many folks would say that, despite what certain stigmas might indicate, things only get better, leaving them to feel sexier and more powerful.

According to TheWrap, Italy has been pursuing charges against noted blockbuster movie director Michael Bay for the past year because of an alleged pigeon death on the 2018 set of 6 Underground. The director refused to pay a fine over the incident because it would have required that he plead guilty to the charge. He and his legal team have tried three times to get the case thrown out as Bay maintains his innocence, but the prosecution is moving forward. Bay is denying the allegation that a homing pigeon was killed by a dolly during a take of the action movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Pigeons are among many birds protected in Italy and throughout the EU.

“I am a well-known animal lover and major animal activist,” Bay said in a statement. “No animal involved in the production was injured or harmed. Or on any other production I’ve worked on in the past 30 years.”

Allegedly, an unnamed person on set saw the death, photographed it, and sent the photos to Italian authorities.

Bay responded directly to the potential photographic evidence by referring to his production’s own “clear video evidence, a multitude of witnesses, and safety officers that exonerates us from these claims. And disproves their one paparazzi photo — which gives a false story.”

Fortunately, it seems safe to make jokes about the situation because it seems unlikely that a pigeon was killed. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t involve doves and another iconic action director, so the jokes don’t really come that naturally.

Early on in Tar, Cate Blanchett‘s eponymous conductor gives thanks to the female conductors who came before her, including Marin Alsop, the real-life trailblazer whose biography is riddled with the word “first.” On Monday, Alsop slammed the Todd Field-directed film as being “anti-woman.”

“To have an opportunity to portray a woman in that role and to make her an abuser — for me that was heartbreaking,” she said. “I think all women and all feminists should be bothered by that kind of depiction because it’s not really about women conductors, is it? It’s about women as leaders in our society. People ask, ‘Can we trust them? Can they function in that role?’ It’s the same questions whether it’s about a CEO or an NBA coach or the head of a police department.”

In response, Blanchett offered a rebuttal to BBC Radio 4.

“She’s entitled to her opinion, absolutely. But it’s a meditation on power and power is genderless,” said Blanchett. “It is a meditation on power and the corrupting nature of power and I think that that doesn’t necessarily happen only in cultural circles. . . I think that power is a corrupting force no matter what one’s gender is. I think it affects all of us.”

Presumably, this is exactly the kind of robust discussion Blanchett and Field knew they’d prompt when they made the film. On the one hand is the collective action problem: there’s only one high-profile movie about a woman conductor, so the portrayal carries outsized weight. On the other, perhaps Tar shouldn’t have to carry that weight of representation that would keep it from exploring something as complicated as corrupting power when a woman is in charge. It’s a worthy conversation which will most likely continue as Tar heads toward the Oscars.

The NAACP Image Awards are set to return next month. Leading the nominations in the recording categories are Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar, both of whom have five nominations. Both Bey and Lamar are nominated for Outstanding Album, for their respective works, Renaissance and Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, which dropped last year.

It’s also worth noting that this year’s Entertainer Of The Year category is completely filled with women nominees, including Mary J. Blige, Angela Bassett, Quinta Brunson, Zendaya, and Viola Davis.

The ceremony will air on Saturday, February 25 at 8 p.m. EST on BET. In the week leading up to the ceremony, the NAACP will announce winners in the non-televised categories. Fans can vote for their favorite nominees in music, television, and motion picture here until February 10.
