All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Yaeji, Julien Baker, and FKA Twig(1024x450)

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Fantasy Of A Broken Heart, Julien Baker, FKA Twigs, and more.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

Sun June – “41 Dollars”

Austin indie rock outfit Sun June are back with their first piece of new music since last year’s gorgeous Bad Dream Jaguar. “41 Dollars,” as vocalist Laura Colwell puts it, is about “listening to men talk,” the sonic equivalent of “nodding your head in exaggerated agreement and smiling through it.” It coasts along on a diaphanous mix of light percussion, acoustic guitars, and Colwell’s gossamer voice.

Julien Baker & Calvin Lauber – “Get Me Away From Here I’m Dying”

Julien Baker has been playing some shows here and there, but we know little of what her follow-up to 2021’s Little Oblivions will be like. Although there’s still no news on that front, she recently shared a stirring collaboration with producer Calvin Lauber in the form of a Belle and Sebastian cover for TRAИƧA, Red Hot’s concept album out this Friday. Their take on “Get Me Away From Here I’m Dying,” which also features Quinn Christopherson and SOAK, is an exercise in anthemic indie-rock, built on towering, post-rock-esque guitars and dense, layered vocals. It opens up the original from a quintessentially twee tune to something epic and grand.

Beirut – “Caspian Tiger”

Last year, Zach Condon (AKA Beirut) released the spellbinding Hadsel, a record that saw the indie rocker flirt with the baroque orchestrations that have long been a staple of his catalog. On “Caspian Tiger,” a single written for a Swedish circus company’s stage adaptation of a Judith Shalansky novel, Condon reconnects with his love of choral arrangements. It’s anchored in gorgeous, swelling vocals that threaten to swallow the song whole, just before they recede into the background. As his latest track shows, Condon remains a compositional wizard.

Yaeji & Teddy Geiger – “Pink Ponies”

Halfway through the process of writing “Pink Ponies,” a track from Red Hot’s forthcoming TRAИƧA, Teddy Geiger’s new friend Pearl had unexpectedly died. Working through this loss, Geiger wrote the first two verses of her new song. “What could I mean to a pearl in the sparkling depth of the sea / Somewhere far out of reach,” go her opening lines. Electronic artist Yaeji handles the closing verses, singing in Korean as the swelling instrumentation behind her carries both musicians to its denouement, their two voices coming together in a fog of cavernous reverb.

Los Campesinos! – More Hell

Over the summer, Welsh emo collective Los Campesinos! released All Hell, their first new album since 2017. As someone who would happily take more All Hell, I’m delighted to report that their surprise-released EP, More Hell, delivers on its titular promise. Composed of acoustic renderings of five album cuts, plus a closing cover of The Secret Stars’ “Wait,” More Hell couldn’t sound more heavenly.

Geologist & D.S. – “Route 9 Falls”

As Brian “Geologist” Weitz and Doug Shaw demonstrate, the best music can sometimes result from captured moments that cannot be made again. A Shaw Deal, their first collaborative record, began as improvisations on guitar that Shaw posted on Instagram. As a birthday present for Shaw, Geologist ran the audio from those extemporaneous performances through modular gear, so he could then tell his friend that “you made a record, you just didn’t know it.” That spirit of camaraderie weaves itself throughout the duo’s kaleidoscopic abstractions on its lead single, “Route 9 Falls,” Shaw’s transmuted guitar cascading up and down in the mix like a waterfall. While those spontaneous guitar sessions can never be recreated note for note, they’ve now been granted a more permanent existence.

Hotline TNT – “4 Shadow”

One of the best new shoegaze/indie-rock bands around right now is Hotline TNT, whose 2023 album Cartwheel is easily one of the best records of the decade so far. The New York group is back with a remastered and reissued version of their 2019 compilation LP, Trilogy, which features two new tracks tacked on at the end. “4 Shadow,” the first of those two new songs, is pure Hotline TNT: explosive drums and grainy guitars caked in a wall of fuzz.

FKA twigs – “Drums Of Death”

In just a couple of months, FKA twigs will release Eusexua, a clear contender for one of 2025’s early highlights. “Drums Of Death,” the latest preview, is perhaps its clubbiest offering yet. Produced by Koreless, its chopped-up vocal samples, stop-and-start sawtooth synths, and punchy dance drums make it an immediate standout in twigs’ stellar discography.

Sasami – “Just Be Friends”

On her last album, 2022’s Squeeze, Sasami Ashworth dabbled in nü-metal and gothic imagery, exemplified by tracks like “Skin A Rat” and her menacing adaptation of Daniel Johnston’s “Sorry Entertainer.” Now, on the upcoming Blood On The Silver Screen, Sasami plays into her poppiest impulses. “Just Be Friends,” her newest single, mines the yearning of country music with a synth-pop sheen. “Stealing sad kisses and leave me in the rain / I promised myself I’d never end up here again,” she sings in the chorus. Somehow, heartbreak sounds good in a place like this.

Fantasy Of A Broken Heart – “Found You Again”

One of the most intoxicating, delightfully heady debuts of 2024 is Feats Of Engineering by Fantasy Of A Broken Heart, the experimental pop duo consisting of Bailey Wollowitz and Al Nardo. They’re back with a new single and Jordana collaboration, “Found You Again,” a track that’s among their more accessible, conventional material, but for Fantasy Of A Broken Heart, nothing is truly conventional. There’s the melodic, arpeggiated guitar that, moments later, transmogrifies into tempestuous squalls, which then turns into a syncopated dance beat with handclaps. Like the best FoaB songs, it’s full of thrilling hairpin turns.

How Jake Paul’s Fight Shorts Connect To Sneaker Customization

paul_tyson(1024x450)
Uproxx

Over the weekend, social media sensation turned legit boxer Jake Paul faced off against the mighty (if aged) Mike Tyson, attracting the eyes of 60 million viewers for what was undoubtedly the fight of the year. The two fighters, aged 27 and 58 respectively, lasted the entire eight rounds, with Paul ultimately besting Iron Mike, crushing the hearts of pretty much everybody over the age of 30.

But we’re not here to talk about the fight, we’re here to talk about Jake Paul’s fit, which Paul revealed on the “Talk Tuah” podcast was worth over $1 million.

“This outfit that I’ve made for the fight is the most expensive fight outfit in the history of boxing,” said Paul. The fit was a custom piece designed by Dominic Ciambrone’s Surgeon Studios and featured metallic silver shorts with diamond tennis chains, and a graphic of Mr. Monopoly holding a money bag. The full outfit was completed with a jewel-encrusted gray jacket prominently featuring the logo of Paul’s new body care line W.

It’s flashy, brash, and eye-catching, a perfect reflection of Paul’s whole vibe. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that this fight helped to solidify Paul’s status as a pop culture icon of the 2020s, and despite Tyson’s advanced age, being able to go toe to toe with the GOAT and come out on top is no easy feat.

This is also a big win for Ciambrone, who we’ve been keeping a close eye on since the days he was simply referred to as the Shoe Surgeon. Check out the fit in action below.

Seven Potential Breakout Stars From The 2024 NBA Cup

alperen sengun jalen johnson

Tyrese Haliburton entered last season in an interesting spot. Yes, everyone knew he was a really good, really talented basketball player — he even made it onto the 2023 All-Star team. And yet, Haliburton was mostly a guy who did some cool things on a not great Indiana Pacers team, which came on the heels of him doing some cool things as a rookie and a second-year player on a not great Sacramento Kings team.

And then, last season happened. More specifically, the inaugural NBA Cup (known at the time as the In-Season Tournament) happened, and Haliburton was the driving force behind an upstart Pacers team that took it to everyone and made the championship game, where they fell to the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the exact sort of springboard to stardom that a cup competition should provide, as a young, up-and-coming team led by a young, up-and-coming star went on a run and nearly won the whole thing.

Haliburton averaged 26.7 points, 13.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in seven tournament games, and while he cooled off a bit as the year went on due to lingering injury issues, he was still able to use his NBA Cup performance as a springboard to an All-NBA Third Team nod and an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now, with this season’s NBA Cup underway, it’s worth wondering which young star is going to use this edition of the tournament as a way to assert themselves as a superstar, and today, we wanted to look at some of the frontrunners to do just that on teams that have already gotten off to good starts in Cup play.

Alperen Sengun, Houston Rockets

The Rockets have been one of the best up-and-coming teams in the league so far this season, and while you can toss a few guys in as their answer (Jalen Green would be a good fit here, too), we’ll go with Sengun, who was great last year but was sidelined with an injury during their big run later in the calendar. Anyone who watches Houston knows that Sengun is good, but ever since they traded James Harden, the Rockets haven’t gotten a ton of attention. The NBA Cup is a chance to change that — they steamrolled the Clippers in their Group A opener last week — and if they can win their game in Minnesota next week, they’re going to be the overwhelming favorites to move out of their group. Add in that Houston has a net rating of +12.98 when Sengun is on the floor this season and while depth is one of their biggest strengths, we’re willing to bet that he’s the guy who will carry them to Cup wins if they come.

Dyson Daniels and Jalen Johnson, Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta beating the Celtics in their NBA Cup opener was a shock, and they followed it up with a win over Washington in their second game. The craziest thing about the game against Boston: Trae Young didn’t play, as Daniels was a two-way menace (28 points, seven assists, six steals) and Johnson stuffed the stat sheet (18 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, three steals, a block). Young is, obviously, the face in Atlanta, but on the heels of the Dejounte Murray trade, there’s space for someone to blossom into his star running mate. Daniels’ ability to just ruin opposing backcourts and Johnson’s ability to do anything Atlanta needs on a given night both fit well alongside him, and they’ll both have to be great if the Hawks go on a run.

Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons

Things have been completely dire in Detroit for a while now, and as a result, Cunningham hasn’t lived up to his billing as a No. 1 overall pick. But things are starting to change — Detroit is 2-0 in Cup play, with Cunningham going for 21 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and two blocks against the Heat before putting up a 21-point, 10-rebounds, 10-assist triple-double with five steals and a block against the Wizards. He has to cut down on his turnovers, but he’s spearheading the Pistons as they try to take a big step forward under JB Bickerstaff. So far, so good, and if Detroit goes on an improbable NBA Cup run, it’ll be because Cunningham took a big leap towards becoming the face of the franchise the Pistons have craved for years.

Franz Wagner, Orlando Magic

The most likely option to go on a Haliburton-esque run. Orlando is 2-0 with wins over Charlotte and Philly, even though Paolo Banchero is out with a torn oblique. The ball has been in Wagner’s hands a lot as a result, and the decision has paid off in a big way. He’s starting to find his shot after he couldn’t hit anything last season, while he looks really comfortable as a scorer and a facilitator. The Magic being good without Banchero is only possible because of Wagner, and a trip to the knockout rounds of the NBA Cup is within reach — their game in New York on Dec. 3 looms large, and we cannot wait to see what Wagner does under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

Evan Mobley, Cleveland Cavaliers

You might have heard this by now: The Cavs are the best team in basketball this year at 15-0, and they won their only NBA Cup game so far against Charlotte. All eyes are on Tuesday night’s trip to Boston to take on the defending champs, which is the exact sort of high-profile stage Cleveland could use to emphatically say they’re championship and NBA Cup contenders. A big reason for the success? Mobley, as the decision to bring Kenny Atkinson on board as head coach has led to him looking more comfortable on offense and his usual brilliant self on defense. He has to continue to do that if the Cavs are going to be championship contenders, and the NBA Cup is a great place for him to show that he’s taken a step forward in his fourth season. If you want, you can also make a case for Darius Garland here, who has been nothing short of spectacular this season and is showing why he’s one of the best young guards in the league. However, Garland has been an All-Star and Donovan Mitchell is a known commodity, so we’ll go with the young big man as the Cav most likely to turn heads.

Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder are in a tricky spot due to the injuries suffered by Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, so it’s possible they are just not big enough to go on an NBA Cup run. If they can, though, our hunch is it’s because of Williams stepping up and being the perfect running mate alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He keeps getting better and better the more experience he gets under his belt, and so far this season, Williams has done that again, as he’s putting up career-best marks in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game. He won’t unseat Shai as the man in Oklahoma City any time soon, but the Thunder are the exact sort of team that can use the NBA Cup as a chance to announce their arrival to the rest of the league. Williams can do the same.

Coldplay Got The Actual Karate Kid, ‘Cobra Kai’ Star Ralph Macchio, To Be In ‘The Karate Kid’ Video

Last month, Coldplay released a “Full Moon” deluxe edition of their latest (and antepenultimate) album, Moon Music. One of the bonus tracks is the Matty Healy-produced “The Karate Kid,” named after the 1984 film of the same name. After Ralph Macchio, who played Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid (and its Netflix sequel series Cobra Kai) raved about the “beautiful track” on social media, he joined Coldplay for a live performance of the song.

Macchio also appears in “The Karate Kid” music video, which you can watch above.

“When Chris Martin pops up on your FaceTime asking you to help create a video to accompany what I found to be a beautifully emotional and poignant song – one inspired by a film I made over 40 years ago – there was only one answer,” the actor wrote in a statement. “Having the opportunity to join Coldplay in Australia at one of their legendary live shows to collaborate on this music video was nothing short of a career highlight. The synergy with Chris, the band, and our director Chris Candy was as pure as any I’ve experienced. I’m excited to share this with the world.”

A limited edition red 7-inch featuring “The Karate Kid” and Coldplay’s current single, “All My Love,” is available to order on recycled vinyl here.

Post Malone Seemingly Confirms Coachella 2025 Performances As He Announces ‘The Big Ass Stadium Tour’ With Jelly Roll

Post Malone is in his country era at the moment, and next year, he’ll be teaming up with one of the genre’s biggest stars, Jelly Roll, and hitting the road: Today (November 19), he announced The Big Ass Stadium Tour.

Jelly Roll will be present for all but a couple of shows (sorry to fans in Miami and Glendale), while Sierra Ferrell is supporting on the first half of the tour.

Notably, the tour dates as listed on Malone’s X (formerly Twitter) post include shows on April 13 and 20 in Indio, California. Unless Malone just happens to be playing some standalone shows at the same time as Coachella 2025 elsewhere in Indio (which, of course, is unlikely), this all but confirms he’s performing at the festival.

For tickets, there’s an artist pre-sale, and registration for it is open now via Ticketmaster. The general on-sale starts November 26 at noon local time via Live Nation.

Longtime J. Cole Fans Can Finally Stream His Debut Mixtape, ‘The Come Up, Vol. 1’

j cole

A funny thing about streaming: It’s very hard to stream certain projects from certain artists, particularly from early in those artists’ careers. While anything from politics to rights issues can keep fan-favorite mixtapes and curios off DSPs for interminable periods, J. Cole fans woke up to a treat today; his 2007 debut mixtape, The Come Up, Vol. 1, is finally available to stream, nearly 17 years after its release. While it’s five songs shorter due to Cole’s inability to clear every instrumental from the original 21-track collection, the fact that he produced 12 of those songs himself likely helped.

The timing of the release is fortuitous, although some might call it convenient. After alienating some fans with his “7 Minute Drill” pump fake earlier this year, Cole’s been working overtime to get back in their good graces. Deleting the ill-advised battle rap track from streamers may not have earned him many fans, but his recent moves seem geared toward shoring up the remaining support he has from his hardliners. After sharing “Port Antonio,” which addresses his reasons for removing “7 Minute Drill” from DSPs, he announced a podcast, Inevitable, a collection of conversations between Cole and his longtime business partners Ibrahim Hamad and Scott Lazer detailing his creative process.

You can officially listen to The Come Up, Vol. 1 on your favorite DSPs, including Apple, Spotify, and Tidal.

Attention Blackpink Fans: Lisa’s Debut Solo Album, ‘Alter Ego,’ Has A Release Date

When [my singles] came out, the reaction from the fans, it’s healing me. It’s like, ‘Oh, my God. Yeah — I did a great job!’” When asked what she’s been listening to lately, Lisa answered, “It’s so embarrassing to say this, but I listen to my album. Selena Gomez Says ‘You Never Know’ When It Comes To Her Making A New Album

In 2020, Selena Gomez released her latest album, Rare, and she followed it in 2021 with the Revelación EP. Since then, fans have been waiting for more new music from Gomez, but she’s been pretty noncommittal about her music career lately.

In a recent interview with NME alongside Emilia Pérez co-star Zoe Saldaña (here’s the clip), Gomez was asked for an update on her “new album,” and she responded, “Well, if I had one, I would love to talk about it.” After cracking a smile, she continued, “No, I think right now, it’s been really nice focusing on this side of the playing field. We’ll see, you never know.” Saldaña chimed in, “I hope, I hope you continue making music.”

In a Vanity Fair interview from September, Gomez also said, “I don’t know if I’m ready, you know? It’s a vulnerable space. Acting has always been my first love. Music is just a hobby that went out of control. Now it is a part of who I am, so I don’t think I’m going anywhere. I’m just not ready yet.”

Gomez, meanwhile, recently achieved billionaire status, but she doesn’t love talking about it, calling it “distasteful” and saying, “I really am giving all the credit to people who buy the products. They’re the ones that made this dream of mine come true, so I’m really, really honored and just happy.”
