‘SNL’ Weekend Update Savaged Dr. Oz For Dead Dogs And Herschel Walker For Raising Money But Not Kids

It was a big week for chaotic MAGA Senate campaigns. A report revealed that experiments launched by Dr. Mehmet Oz, running in Pennsylvania, led to the deaths of hundreds of dogs. After that news broke, Herschel Walker, running in Georgia, said, “Hold my beer”: A woman told The Daily Beast that the former footballer had once paid for her abortion. There was no way both bombshells wouldn’t make the cut on this week’s SNL‘s Weekend Update.

“Is it just me or are some candidates trying to lose?” co-host Colin Jost cracked at the segment’s opening, before tackling the former TV quack first. “Scientific studies published by Dr. Oz revealed that his experiments killed over 300 dogs. But eventually he got the recipe right,” he joked aside an image of a fake cookbook with the title, “Dr. Oz’s Organic Meatballs.”

But Jost wasn’t done. After a wood chipper joke, he got in one more, saying, “But don’t worry: Dr. Oz won everybody back last night when he gave a speech in front of Hitler’s car,” alluding to an event that seriously happened. “Worse, he then got into the car and backed over a dog.”

Then it was Walker’s turn. “After news broke that Walker paid for his ex-girlfriend’s abortion, he raised more than $500,000,” Che said, adding, “because dollars are the only thing Walker is willing to raise.”

Jost later returned to Walker when discussing the news that Planned Parenthood was launching mobile clinics in the wake of encroaching draconian abortion laws across the country, saying they “will make it easier to provide care to patients anywhere in the country that Herschel Walker has visited.”

The twosome also tackled Ron DeSantis, who became a social media laughing stock after images of him wearing high white boots circulated. Jost, after referring to him as a “Dallas Cowboys cheerleader,” discussed how the Florida governor explained away the number of residents who didn’t evacuate before Hurricane Ian, joking, “Some people just don’t want to leave their homes, which is why sometimes you have to trick them onto a plane to Martha’s Vineyard.’”

Che and Jost also tackled Joe Biden’s most recent gaffe, Kanye going on Tucker Carlson, Scooby Doo’s Velma coming out as a lesbian, and National Coffee with a Cop Day on Wednesday, with Che saying, “Something tells me cops like their coffee black with a couple of shots in them.”

The Giants Tried Philly Philly But Had A Tight End Run For A Touchdown Instead

On Feb. 4, 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, and while many moments stick out from the game, one stands taller than the rest. Facing a fourth-and-goal just before halftime and the team holding onto a 3-point lead, the Eagles called a trick play known as “Philly Philly,” which was a double reverse that ended with quarterback Nick Foles catching a touchdown.

Fast forward to Sunday morning and another NFC East team decided to bring that across the pond. The New York Giants are in London taking on the Green Bay Packers, and found themselves just inside the 2-yard line with less than 90 seconds to go before the half. With the chance for their first touchdown of the game right in front of them, the Giants took a page out of the Eagles’ playbook and hoped for a London Special.

While it did not work out as the team intended — the Packers seemed to realize what was going on pretty quickly and made sure Daniel Jones was covered in the end zone — it gave us a wonderful moment in which Giants tight end Daniel Bellinger rumbled, bumbled, and stumbled his way in for six.

This was the second touchdown in the career of the rookie from San Diego State, and it was a pretty good one.

‘SNL’ Cold Open Tackled All The Bad News, From Herschel Walker To Elon Musk To Kanye

Last week, as it has been for, well, years now, the news was creatively awful. Herschel Walker, a hardline anti-abortion candidate, was accused of once paying for one. Elon Musk may be buying Twitter after all (unless he’s not). Kanye West teamed with far right wacko Candace Owens and wore shirts that read “White Lives Matter.” And our president, though he’s finally been getting a lot of good stuff done, is incredibly old. SNL tried to get it all in this week’s cold open sketch.

SNL doesn’t always have a great track record when it comes to hitting multiple topics in one sketch. But for the second episode of their 48th season, they found an elegant way to do just that. Bowen Yang played the host of a game show called So You Think You Won’t Snap, in which purportedly chill contestants see if they won’t lose their stuff over hearing various news bites.

For instance, Heidi Gardner played a Vermont-based music teacher and “white yoga teacher” who hasn’t touched hooch in 15 years. Yang’s host dared her to guzzle a “Today Show-sized glass of wine” by reciting various factoids about Joe Biden. “Did you know that when Joe Biden was born, we didn’t have highways?” he asked her, adding, “Joe Biden was 53 years old when he got his first home computer.” But it’s a clip of Biden rambling when asked how about his “focus” that sends Gardner over the edge.

Elsewhere, Chloe Fineman played a mom undone by the Herschel Walker news, especially upon learning that the footballer-turned-chaotic Georgia candidate had his best fundraising day ever after it was revealed he may have paid for an abortion with a woman who later had his baby (that he may have asked to have aborted). Kenan Thompson lost it over Elon Musk, while poor newbie Devon Walker struggled to stay cool when hit with multiple terrible Kanye tidbits. And they probably didn’t have time to get to his latest awful news.

Willow Smashes A TV With A Guitar During A Performance Of ‘Ur A Stranger’ On ‘SNL’

In her second performance of the night, Willow took the Saturday Night Live stage for a performance of “Ur A Stranger” from her latest album, COPINGMECHANISM

While on stage, Willow sang the angsty, heartbreak anthem, showing off her screamo chops on the bridge and closing verse.

“She used to be mine / Now she’s yours and that’s fine / Guess I ran out of time to please / I never thought I’d be angry / You’re so f*ckin’ shady,” she sang with pure emotion. It’s worth noting that NBC censors didn’t catch the f-bomb she dropped during the set.

At the end of the performance, Willow pulled a classic rockstar move and smashed a TV with her guitar.

“Ur A Stranger” is one of the more raw tracks on the album. In a recent interview with The Guardian, she said she feels expressing negative emotions is equally as important as expressing positive emotions.

“I can’t stay up in that ethereal, celestial, high-vibration good-vibes place all the time,” she said. “That’s the place we all want to be, and sometimes you’ve just got to white-knuckle through. But at other times you need to listen to your emotions, to learn from going into your shadow. Negative emotions can be cathartic. We don’t always have the answers, and that’s OK.”

Willow Delivers An Electrifying Performance Of ‘Curious/Furious’ On ‘SNL

On the heels of her new album, COPINGMECHANISM, Willow gave a powerful performance of “Curious/Furious” on Saturday Night Live.

During the performance, Willow was joined by a drummer and electric guitarists, and showed off her vocal chops, as she demonstrated the extent of her vast vocal range

On COPINGMECHANISM, Willow continues evolving her sound as a rock artist, an era she began on her last album, 2021’s Lately I Feel Everything. In a recent interview with Glamour, Willow revealed that when she had first brought up the idea of making a rock album, some people in the industry weren’t entirely on board.

“When I wanted to do a rock album, there were a lot of executives that were like, ‘Hmm…’” she said “If I had been white, it would’ve been completely fine; but because I’m Black it’s, ‘Well… maybe let’s just not’ – and making it harder than it needs to be. If I go through that, every single other Black artist is getting the pushback [too].”

Over the years, Willow has also dabbled in R&B and pop, however, always maintained an affinity for rock music. Elsewhere in the interview, Willow said she plans to continue to dabble in new sounds, even if it comes at a cost.

“The most beautiful changes on earth don’t happen by being comfortable and expecting other people to change,” she said. “You have to put yourself on the line sometimes. It’s not fair, but that’s how it is.”

Kanye West Says He’s Going ‘Death Con 3 On Jewish People’

Following a suspension on Instagram for allegedly making anti-semitic remarks, Kanye West took to Twitter to double down on these comments.

“I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE,” he said in a tweet. “The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also. You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.”

He continued, saying, “Who do you think created cancel culture?”

These comments come just days after he wore a controversial “white lives matter” shirt during his Yeezy Season 9 fashion show during Paris Fashion Week, and making demeaning comments about Vogue fashion editor Gabriela Karefa-Johnson.

To make matters worse, he appeared on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight for an interview with the host, in which he reiterated his body-shaming comments, saying, “the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy,” Ye said. “Let’s get aside the fact of whether it’s fashion in Vogue, which it’s not. If someone thinks it’s attractive, to each his own. It’s actually clinically unhealthy, and for people to promote that, it’s demonic.”

Bray Wyatt Made His Return At WWE Extreme Rules

WWE played the long game when it came to the return of multi-time champion Bray Wyatt, who made his grand reveal Saturday night at Extreme Rules.

After Matt Ridddle earned the submission victory over Seth Rollins in the Fight Pit main event, some familiar faces from Wyatt’s past Firefly Funhouse showed up around the arena, including what the Fiend in the front row. The camera then panned to the Firefly Funhouse which appeared abandoned. A door opened on the main stage and out came Wyatt’s latest reincarnation, holding the traditional lamp and a boasting a new mask. He blew out the lamp as Extreme Rules went off the air.

Wyatt’s return comes after his release in July 2021, arguably the biggest name let go during WWE’s trimming of the roster. He re-joins the WWE after plenty of build, with the organization playing Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” during commercial breaks and at live events over the past month. The latest literal signs that WWE used to tease Wyatt’s re-emergence was by placing QR codes at live events that directed to websites teasing his return.

As has been the case since he took over, Triple H brings back another ex-WWE star, joining the likes of Braun Strowman, Karrion Kross, and others to fill out the roster in the wake of Vince McMahon’s departure.

Ronda Rousey Won The WWE Smackdown Women’s Title At Extreme Rules

Ronda Rousey has reached the top of the mountain yet again, defeating Liv Morgan to become Smackdown Women’s Champion thanks to a referee stoppage at WWE Extreme Rules.

Rousey’s 55-day reign came to an end in July when Morgan cashed in her Money in the Bank contract on the same night she won the briefcase. Morgan has done well since then to hold onto the belt, beating Rousey at SummerSlam before holding onto the belt against Shayna Baszler at Clash at the Castle.

But Saturday night, she wasn’t able to hold off Rousey in a back-and-forth affair. Despite crashing Rousey through a table with a senton bomb, the former champ managed to avoid the pinfall and work her way into an arm bar from the pin attempt.

Morgan kept her hands clasped and tried to fight off Rousey, when Morgan deadlift powerbombed Rousey into a piece of the table. Rousey kept the armbar locked in, then awkwardly transitioned into holding Morgan’s arms between her legs while locking her head behind her legs until Morgan passed out.

Despite the title win, it seems Rousey’s rivalry with Morgan is destined to continue. We’ll see what the champ has in store when at Friday night’s Smackdown.

Charlie Puth Admits His 2016 Debut Album Felt Rushed

Charlie Puth is certainly not mincing words during the era of his third album, Charlie. Though it’s been four years since he released his last album, Voice Notes, Puth believes that putting in more time to create a body of work was essential. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Puth shared that he felt that his career as a pop star, after having worked behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer, felt rushed, beginning with his 2016 debut album, Nine Track Mind.

“I certainly don’t make music for critics,” he said “but I was agreeing with them when they curbed my first album and they were like, ‘This is the worst music ever.’ I wish I had time to make a better album. We had ‘See You Again,’ the biggest song since ‘Lose Yourself.’ And I was never supposed to sing that record. I wrote it specifically for another artist to sing, and then I suddenly had to figure out how to be an artist in front of millions of people.”

He continued, saying, “I was corny. I was 24 years old. I was figuring out, like, how to sing in front of a live audience. I had never done any of this stuff before because I thought I was just gonna be behind the scenes. So forgive me if I made some missteps, but I had millions of eyes on me.”

For much of the album, Puth shared parts of the songwriting and recording process with fans via several TikTok clips. While he hasn’t revealed whether or not he’s begun work on a follow-up to Charlie, he did say that he does plan to continue to share updates with fans as he works on new projects.

“I don’t think I’m ever gonna make an album where I’m hiding away from people,” he said. “and I’m in my little cocoon and then one day I’ll be ready to share it with everybody. It just doesn’t feel like me.”

Charlie is out now via Atlantic. Stream it here.

Charlie Puth is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Kanye West’s Instagram Access Has Been Restricted Following His Alleged Anti-Semitic Remarks

Following a series of rants on Instagram this past week, Kanye West has subsequently been banned from the platform.

A spokesperson from Instagram’s parent company, Meta, told NBC News that Instagram had removed content that was considered anti-semitic, however, they did not go into details regarding the policies Ye allegedly violated.

Earlier in the week, Ye shared a supposed interaction between him and Diddy after Diddy criticized him during an interview on The Breakfast Club for wearing a shirt that read “white lives matter.” Ye allegedly texted Diddy, noting he wanted to carry them as part of his merch, but Diddy appears to have shut down the idea, and encouraged Ye to “stop playing these internet games.”

Ye then shared screenshots of their alleged exchange to his Instagram page.

“This ain’t a game,” Ye said. “Ima use you as an example to show the Jewish people that told you to call me that no one can threaten or influence me. I told you this was war. Now gone get you some business.”

Many found these comments anti-semitic, which likely led to Instagram restricting his access.

Following his restriction on Instagram, Ye made a brief return to Twitter, calling out Facebook founder and Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg.

“Look at this Mark. How you gone kick me off instagram,” he said.

At the time of writing, it is unknown how long Ye’s access to Instagram will be restricted.
