Indie Mixtape 20: Luna Li Refines Her Sound On ‘When A Thought Grows Wings’

LeeorWild-LunaLi-13 square. ACTUAL FEATURED
Leeor Wild

Luna Li’s new album sounds stellar. When A Thought Grows Wings, her second album, refines the lush indie-pop she previously established on 2022’s Duality. Citing influences like ‘70s jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey and harpist Dorthy Ashby feels appropriate; Hannah Bussiere Kim channels her multi-instrumental talents, including the flute and mini-harp, showcasing her prowess for melding classical instruments with pop-minded songwriting.

After ending a long-term relationship and relocating from her native Toronto to Los Angeles, Luna Li seemed poised for a significant sonic shift. But rather than radically altering her sound, she has refined it. From start to finish, When A Thought Grows Wings is an enchanting display of growth.

Ahead of the record’s release this Friday, Luna Li sat down with Uproxx to talk about Tame Impala, Ethiopian food, and taking ballet lessons in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Cinematic, psychedelic, warm, intricate.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

I would like my music to be remembered as something that brought warmth and beauty into the world, especially for people who don’t always feel they belong.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

I don’t know if there’s one person in particular who has inspired my work directly, but my parents are the reason I make music because they fostered a really supportive environment for me to learn as much as I could about music from an early age.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

I stumbled upon an Ethiopian food stand in London right before a show last summer. There was no menu; they just served you what they had that night. I was so hungry that evening and it just truly hit the spot.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

I saw Tame Impala at this venue called the Kool Haus in Toronto with my best friend when I was 16. Because it was such a formative time and I was such a huge fan of theirs and I got to see them at this little venue, it meant a lot to me. Also I saw Mitski at a festival once and she’s the most beautiful performer I’ve ever seen.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

“Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

Cello pickup options for my brother to join me on the cello onstage when we play our Toronto show this fall! We will need to plug it in…

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

A stranger’s living room, with a bunch of other random people who for some reason also needed a place to crash.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

My favorite city to play in is Toronto because my whole community is there and it’s so special to be able to share my music with them. And I would love to perform one day in Seoul, which is where my dad is from.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

I’d say trust yourself and your instincts. No one else can tell you what’s best for you. I’m still learning that lesson now.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I did 13 years of ballet as a kid, and sometimes I still go to classes for fun.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

This is a hard one. Maybe I would find a social justice organization I really align with and work with them to help shape policies to benefit marginalized people, and to properly address climate change in an intersectional way. Maybe I would start my own charity to bring music education to communities that don’t have access to that. There are so many areas that need money and resources, it’s hard to choose just one.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

I have mixed feelings about AI, especially having learned recently that AI data centers use a lot of energy. I think it could be an interesting tool for creatives, but I do worry about it being used in place of real artists’ work. I’m OK with it as long as there are policies in place that protect artists, and we find a more sustainable way to use it.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

Mitski, Joni Mitchell, Björk, Solange, and Tame Impala, somewhere in rural Ontario on a lake. Actually it would be really overwhelming to me to see all of them in one day. I don’t know if I would be OK. It might need to be spread out over a few weeks so that I’d have time to process each show.

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

I love the ‘dust to digital’ account on Instagram. They post the coolest music clips from around the world.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

My first tattoo was a (pretty terrible) crescent moon stick and poke I got on my left calf at a party at the age of 17. People sometimes think it’s a horseshoe or the letter C.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I do vocal warmups in the green room with the band, and if we remember to, we do a pre-show handshake we made up a few years ago.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

I’m not sure. Maybe Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

I would love to go to Korea and Japan with my best friends or my family!

What is your biggest fear?

My fears feel a bit too scary to write down or say out loud. I’m not putting that energy out into the universe.

Mariah May Is Ready To Put On A ‘Cinematic Masterpiece’ At AEW All In

mariah may toni storm
AEW

There’s something poetic about Mariah May’s path to Wembley Stadium for her AEW All In Women’s World Championship match against Toni Storm on Sunday. She grew up watching football games and concerts at the venue where she’ll be featured prominently against the woman whose path she followed to stardom.

She didn’t know how this story would culminate, how it would build to one of the greatest long term stories in AEW history, or that she’d have the opportunity to further progress the promotion’s women’s division into a focal point of weekly television.

All she knew after a 5 a.m. phone call with AEW CEO Tony Khan was that this role, this story, this opportunity was made for her. To be featured in this fashion is a dream come true for the British wrestler.

“I never imagined I would wrestle (at Wembley), and then AEW finally brought wrestling back to Wembley and kind of created this resurgence in the UK,” May tells Uproxx Sports. “So, to be able to be a part of that means so much. But the part that I’m looking forward to the most is ending Toni Storm’s career.”

May says what you see on screen is the exact nature of their relationship behind the scenes. She acknowledges that Storm was “always the top girl” in the UK, and admits that she “followed her footsteps as far as possible,” whether that was in Stardom or AEW.

“And that’s exactly why I’m going to beat her,” May says. “Because she essentially created me.”

May’s end goal was always to move to America and to wrestle on television. She saw what Storm was able to do at a young age, moving from New Zealand to the UK, working all over Europe and then Japan, and modeled her path forward based on that success.

“Once I started wrestling, I realized just how broad the wrestling industry is. I discovered Japan, I discovered Stardom. I really wanted to find who I was and to grow as a wrestler and learn all these different styles across the UK, across Europe, the Japanese style,” May says.

“For me, once AEW came around, it revolutionized wrestling, and it actually brought me back into American wrestling. I was very focused on what I was doing in Japan and becoming such a strong all-around competitor. And then Tony Khan reached out to me, and we talked at length about this incredible idea that he had. And that’s the main reason why I decided to sign with AEW so soon. I thought I might stay in Japan a little bit longer, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity because the storyline was so incredible.”

In less than a year, May and Storm have worked with RJ City, who she calls an “amazing writer,” and Khan to develop an onscreen story that incrementally built investment and intrigue as their dynamic evolved. It was one of the more straightforward storylines that didn’t involve a ton of twists and turns.

It was simply executed perfectly.

“It threads so deeply into our real life because I have really followed in her footsteps all the way until now, where I finally get to stand side by side with her at Wembley,” May says.

May thought “it felt like fate” when Khan announced that the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament winner would get a title shot at Wembley. While it’s early in her career, the resolution from the best of friends to bitter enemies is something May claims she’s planned for a long time.

“Whilst Wembley and the AEW Women’s World Championship is an incredible added bonus, the goal has always been Toni Storm,” she says. “Toni Storm is the best wrestler that we have, but her weakness is that she’s completely head in the clouds and away with the fairies. I made her fall in love with me, I made her think she was my own mother, and the fact that I stabbed her in the forehead with a shoe when her own catchphrase is ‘watch for the shoe’ entirely embodies why I will beat her at Wembley. She’s not going to see it coming.”

From a broader perspective, May sees her story as part of a larger movement across the women’s division.

“I think it’s such a positive for the AEW women’s division. I feel like we get a lot of unwarranted criticism, when in actuality we do at least three women’s segments every Dynamite. We have long-running storylines, long-running feuds. You’re seeing three women’s matches at Wembley between the main show and the pre-show, and to be a part of the biggest women’s storyline that I think we’ve ever had in AEW, it’s such an honor, but I think it’s also completely justified,” May says. “I think we’ve all worked incredibly hard, from the writing team with R.J. to Tony Khan’s original idea to Toni and I. I think it’s completely deserved and what everyone is going to see at Wembley is going to be the cinematic masterpiece that perfectly concludes a year of just hard work and heart that has gone into this.”

With a roster bursting with talent, May has endless directions to go after Sunday. She’s long spoken about a dream match with the current TBS Women’s Champion, Mercedes Moné, and seems open to the idea of a blockbuster showdown in the near future.

“Mercedes Moné was a huge signing for AEW and she is a conversation starter, so it’s always good to mix it up with people that are going to make people talk. I think she’s an incredible wrestler and I have my eyes on her match, too,” May says.

“I’m interested to see who prevails, if it will be her or if it will be Britt Baker, who’s obviously the AEW original girl, who I’d love to have a singles (match) with as well. Either way, I know I’m walking out of Wembley as the Women’s World Champion, which is the top women’s belt. So whether it be Britt or Mercedes, I’d love to wrestle them. Maybe title for title down the line, maybe next year in Texas.”

Ever since Ashanti and Nelly reportedly rekindled their romance last spring, fans haven’t been able to get enough of the cute couple, which rumors of a pregnancy swirling just eight months later — which Ashanti eventually confirmed. And hey, wouldn’t you know it, nine months after that, here we are: Ashanti has announced the birth of the couple’s first child together, Kareem Kenkaide Hayes, on Instagram. That makes Ashanti’s first and Nelly’s sixth.

In the post, Ashanti wrote: “Funny how life’s plans aren’t…always on time.. lol. I’ve been waiting to be a mom for a long time now but nothing could prepare me for EVERYTHING motherhood brings! This is what postpartum looks like… I’m so proud of my body for giving me my baby, baby, baby, baby, baby.” People also got a statement from a rep, which read, “Ashanti and Nelly welcomed their baby boy, Kareem Kenkaide Hayes, on July 18, 2024. The proud and happy parents are so in love with KK!” That means baby Kareem is a month old, but it makes sense that the couple would take time to adjust to parenthood before making an official announcement.

The whirlwind romance not only brought a new baby, but also marriage; in June, it was reported that the couple had privately gotten married, although they hadn’t had an official ceremony yet.

U2 Turned Their Pioneering Sphere Residency Into A Concert Film That You Can Only Watch At Sphere

U2 have long been extremists and innovators in the concert space, so they were a natural pick to give the first performances at Las Vegas’ innovative new venue, Sphere. They brought the U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere residency there in 2023 and 2024, and for those who missed out, it’s now a concert film… but you’ll still have to head to Vegas to see it.

V-U2 An Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas was announced today (August 21), and as of now, the film will only screen at Sphere. The film is set to open on September 5. The general on-sale will begin on August 23 at 10 a.m. PT via Ticketmaster. U2.com subscribers will have access to a pre-sale starting August 22 at 10 a.m. PT, and Sphere will have a pre-sale for its Inner Circle subscribers starting Autust 22 at noon PT. Tickets start at the all-in price of $100.

A press release explains what went into making an experience like this:

V-U2 is a Sphere Experience, Sphere’s signature original content category. To create this larger-than-life concert film, a number of Big Sky cameras captured the band at extraordinary scale, sharpness, and clarity. V-U2 employs Sphere’s immersive technologies including the 160,000 sq. ft. display plane, which at 16k x 16k resolution is the world’s highest-resolution LED screen; Sphere Immersive Sound, powered by HOLOPLOT, which provides crystal-clear sound to every seat in Sphere; and haptic seats, which use vibrations so guests can ‘feel’ the experience. All of these technologies, which were used to great effect in ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere,’ will be leveraged in this Sphere Experience in new and different ways to reinforce the feeling of ‘being there.’”

U2’s The Edge, who co-directed the film alongside Morleigh Steinberg, says in a statement, “The goal was to give the immersive movie goers as close to the live U2:UV concert experience as possible — and then some. I’ve never seen a U2 show. I’m so relieved I caught a great one.

Steinberg also says, “We knew all the tremendous capabilities of the technology, but we didn’t know what to expect from the process of making this film. The work became a true collaboration between band, artists, producers, and technology teams. The end result is a cinematic experience that transports viewers into the energy and beauty of the live show.”

‘The Crow’s Bill Skarsgard And FKA Twigs Could Not Stop (Charmingly) Giggling While Promoting Their Not-Funny Movie

Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs are two very peculiar entertainers with a knack for a particular niche: being a just little unsettling. FKA Twigs is known for creating her own mystical and dark world through her music, while Skarsgard is…a Skarsgard! So he’s already got that creepy persona down. So it does make sense that the two were tapped for the remake of The Crow, a notoriously dark movie with an even darker past. But you would not think that based on the amount of charming moments between Twigs and Skarsgard.

The Crow was first was released in 1994, just after the death of lead actor Brandon Lee, who died from injuries sustained during filming. The story follows Eric Draven as The Crow, who is resurrected to avenge the murder of his love. The remake hits theaters this Friday, and the two leads have been preparing moviegoers by appearing to be actually infatuated with each other while promoting the movie. Yes, it’s about death and haunting imagery and crows, but it’s really a movie about love! In addition to death.

While discussing the movie with IMDB, Twigs mentioned her fear of water which was only made worse by the underwater scenes. But you would never know it, because they break out giggles while talking about the film. And then he made this face, for some reason:

YouTube/IMDB

Maybe the topic of immortality is off-putting to some, so this is how they deal! It seemed to work for the two of them.

YouTube/IMDB

Aside from the laughing fits, the two then discussed their emotional connection, but when Twigs tells Skarsgard,”As a person, I think you are very beautifully deep” he responded, “this is getting so serious.” Which he should have expected since the movie is about, you know, death and dying. In return, Skarsgard called Twigs a “true artist” for moving from her music projects into acting. But he did mention that she was not a great swimmer, so there is some work to be done there, when they are finished laughing.

Kehlani Just Surprise-Announced ‘While We Wait 2’ And The Project Will Arrive In A Matter Of Days

Kehlani WeHo Pride 2024
Getty Image

It’s Kehlani time, as the artist just released their latest album, Crash, back in June. In case that project was somehow starting to feel a little stale already, though, Kehlani has your back: They just announced While We Wait 2, a new project that’s apparently a sequel to the 2019 mixtape While We Wait.

Kehlani shared the cover art on Instagram today (here), along with the quickly approaching release date: August 28.

As fans know, the original While We Wait mixtape is a highlight of Kehlani’s discography. It was their second project to hit the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, and it spawned the Ty Dolla sign collaboration “Nights Like This,” which is currently Kehlani’s most-streamed song on Spotify with a hair under 600 million plays as of this post.

Meanwhile, last month, Kehlani announced the Crash World Tour, which kicks off in September, days after the release of While We Wait 2, and it will feature support from FLO and Anycia.

As for what else Kehlani has been up to in recent days, they just performed a terrific Tiny Desk Concert a few weeks ago. They also spoke up about their sexuality, saying, “I don’t know why there’s this inability to fathom that I’m a raging lesbian.”

Everything New On Netflix In September 2024, Including ‘Monsters,’ ‘Uglies,’ And More ‘Emily In Paris’

uglies
Netflix

Do you have plans for Labor Day weekend yet? Netflix is gearing up for a month of new releases, so the time couldn’t be better to “couch rot” for three days and clear out your queue in preparation for more. Surely, there are a few AMC shows, several of which hit the streamer last month, that you have been meaning to watch, so seize that opportunity.

Once you’re clear of other viewing obligations, prepare for the next horror story in Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series. Emily In Paris will be ready to bring on the bubbly positivity next to clear those nightmares away, and a pair of book adaptations round out the feature selections below.

Here’s everything coming to Netflix in September:

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Netflix series streaming 9/19)

After Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer became one of the most-watched Netflix series in the streamer’s history, of course there turned out to be more on the way. The next anthology chapter takes on the real-life siblings who rose to mid-1990s tabloid-show notoriety after being convicted for murdering their parents. Unfortunately, this series does not present Evan Peters in a different serial-killer role each season (missed opportunity), but it does star Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez and the brothers with Javier Bardem Chloë Sevigny as José and Kitty Menendez.

Uglies (Netflix film streaming 9/13)

The Scott Westerfeld dystopian novel will come to life in this film starring Netflix movie Queen Joey King. She portrays a teen who grows up in a terribly warped society that sees beauty standards as mandatory, and nobody is immune to seeking a “Pretties” transformation at a certain age. However, she needs to go find a missing friend before going under the knife. Yes, it’s strange but also intriguing.

Emily in Paris: Season 4 Part 2 (Netflix series streaming 9/12)

Well, Emily got together with Gabriel in Part 1 of this season, but since this is a Darren Star series, no couple can stay happy for too long. Fortunately, Emily will leave Paris for other European destinations, so we will have a nice distraction from the romantic melodrama because you know that Camille is going to start circling again even though — let’s face it — she doesn’t even truly want Gabriel. Bring on the gorgeous scenery and ridiculous fashion already.

The Perfect Couple (Netflix series streaming 9/5)

Nicole Kidman has not-so-quietly been amassing TV series on HBO, Hulu, and Amazon, so it only makes sense that she would follow up her A Family Affair Netflix movie with a TV series on the same streaming service. This (presumably limited) series looks like a cross between The White Lotus and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with Kidman portraying the matriarch of a wealthy Nantucket family. In this adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s book, the fam is about to welcome a daughter-in-law, yet unfortunately, the wedding weekend turns into a murder scene, and the whodunit begins.

Sabrina Carpenter Fans Think She Quietly Changed A Music Video To Address The Barry Keoghan Break-Up Rumors

Last week, rumors started circulating, claiming that Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan had broken up. Another report described the pair’s relationship as “on-and-off.” There’s been no proof of the relationship coming to an end, though, and neither Keoghan nor Carpenter have publicly addressed the situation.

Well, actually, some believe that Carpenter has, albeit very subtly.

Over the past few days, some observant fans have noticed that the YouTube thumbnail for Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” video (above), which co-stars Keoghan, was changed. There’s a helpful before-and-after image here, and it shows that the newer thumbnail is taken from a similar point in the video as the previous thumbnail. The primary difference is that Keoghan is more clearly visible in the background of the new thumbnail. It could be a coincidence, or it could be Carpenter and her team finding a small way to shut down the break-up rumors.

Carpenter spoke about her romantic life in a June interview, saying, “The [dating] pool is the pool, and when you meet people that feel authentic and are so brilliant and amazing in every way, that’s what you do. Obviously, I write songs about exactly how I feel, so I guess I can’t be so surprised that people are interested in who and what those songs are about. That’s something that comes with the territory.”

There Was Another Purpose To Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Thirst Trap’ Photos Than… Y’Know

sydney_a4365b
Getty Image

Sorry, The Butcher, but you’re only the second most popular “trap” this month.

Sydney Sweeney broke the internet, as they said (or at least they did 10 years ago), when she shared swimsuit-clad photos of herself chilling on a boat. “i think they call this a thirst trap,” the Immaculate and Barbarella star wrote. You were too distracted by, uh, other things to notice, but the pictures were meant to draw attention to her shoes: according to GQ, Sweeney is now the global spokesperson for footwear brand HeyDude.

Sweeney is wearing the same outfit in her intro video as “director of Dude,” which you can watch here, as she was in the thirst trap post.

“HeyDude values comfort, both in the footwear space and in all aspects of life, which is a message that we can all get behind,” the actress (and mom of Tank) said. “The brand never sacrifices style for comfort, which is why HeyDude’s iconic styles are my favorite shoe option whether I’m traveling or commuting to set. I’m thrilled to represent the brand in 2024 and beyond.”

If you want to see Sweeney’s HeyDude collection, you might have to wait: the website is currently loading very slowly, presumably from too much traffic. So, in a way, she did break the internet.

Eminem Imagines A Terrifying Alternate Reality In His Somber ‘Somebody Save Me’ Video With Jelly Roll

Eminem‘s most emotive Death Of Slim Shady track, “Somebody Save Me” with Jelly Roll, gets a gut-wrenching video. The rap concept album finds the battle-scarred Detroit vet in a contemplative mood, fighting with his vindictive alter ego and the impacts it’s had on his life, so naturally, the “Somebody Save Me” video makes that struggle literal but in a much less jokey way than his prior videos for “Tobey” and “Houdini.”

In the lyrics to “Somebody Save Me,” Em imagines a horrifying alternate timeline in which he succumbs to the effects of depression and drug dependency and how it would have affected his family. In the video, Em is trapped watching such scenes play out in a glass box, seeing himself lose — or throw away — all the good that has resulted from his decision to get sober. The video ends with a call to action, telling viewers there’s help and offering a link to free therapy services. You can check that out here. Jelly Roll, who appears in the video to sing the chorus, makes for a strong choice on the song, as he’s had similar struggles, and that lived experience shines through his performance.

You can watch Eminem’s “Somebody Save Me” video above.

The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is out now via Shady Records/Aftermath/Interscope. You can find more info here.
