Joel Embiid Did Not Play In Team USA’s Second Olympic Game Against South Sudan

Steve Kerr decided to change up his starting lineup ahead of Team USA’s second game at the Paris Olympics. One of the two changes occurred in the frontcourt, because after going through all of the pre-Olympic exhibitions and the team’s first game with Joel Embiid starting at center, Kerr decided to put the Philadelphia 76ers star on the bench for their game against South Sudan with Anthony Davis sliding into the starting unit.

Unsurprisingly, the Americans were able to pick up a win on the evening. Despite a choppy third quarter, the United States 103-86, to secure their spot in the quarterfinal of the tournament. But in what perhaps is a surprise, Embiid did not get on the floor against South Sudan, making him the only player on the American roster who did not get into the game.

It is difficult to find minutes for everyone on the Team USA roster, with Kerr noting it’s basically impossible to play 12 guys in a 40-minute game — last time out, neither Jayson Tatum nor Tyrese Haliburton played in the team’s win over Serbia. But Embiid is an interesting case, as he’s been under the spotlight this entire summer. His decision to suit up for the U.S. over Cameroon (his nation of birth) and France (the host nation for the Olympics) was the kind of high-profile decision you rarely see for the American roster, and while no one questions how good Embiid is, he’s struggled to get into the flow of the more free-flowing international game.

Additionally, while he performed well in the Americans’ narrow win over South Sudan in the lead-up to the Olympics, they’re an opponent that likes to spread the floor and get up shots from deep, so Embiid’s rim protection isn’t as valuable as it is against an opponent like Serbia (which has Nikola Jokic) or France (which has Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama). That’s especially the case because the team’s other two centers, Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo, are a little more comfortable switching than Embiid. And it’s also unclear if he was carrying a minor injury or just needed a break, but we assume that Kerr will address that at some point.

No matter what, this is going to be something people talk about for the next few days ahead of the team’s group stage finale against Puerto Rico on Saturday. It’s probably a safe bet that Embiid (along with Haliburton, for that matter) will get a good amount of game time in that one as long as he’s healthy, as the team is going to need him as the tournament goes on.

Halle Bailey Promised New Music In August, But Is ‘Going To Go Away For A Few Weeks’ First

In today’s ultra-connected world, it’s important to unplug sometimes. This is especially true for artists and other public figures, whose social media allows them to stay in contact with fans, but also exposes them to thousands of criticisms and myriad distractions from their respective crafts.

Halle Bailey knows this, and is giving herself a break from social media for a while, as she told fans on Twitter (never calling it “X”). But, there’s good news, too: She’ll only be gone until August, and when she returns, it’ll be with new music.

“hey guys. i am going to go away for a few weeks, will be offline,” she wrote. “just need a break from everyone. will be back with new music in august. xo.”

The actress and singer has plenty of reason to take that break. In April, she admitted to having “severe postpartum depression” after the birth of her son Halo, just a month after releasing the new single “In Your Hands” to less-than-enthusiastic reception from fans. She was also encouraged to ignore social media by her sister Chloe during her pregnancy, and perhaps that strategy proved effective enough to encourage her to do it again. Meanwhile, as fans, we’ll be looking forward to August with plenty of curiosity about what she plans to do next.

Jack White Has Opened Up About His Secret, Surprise New Album That Now Has A Proper Release Forthcoming

Jack White 2024
David James Swanson

Things have been fun in the Jack White camp lately. Earlier this month, folks shopping at White’s Third Man Records stores were given unmarked vinyl records for free with their purchase, with no explanation. It turned out to be a batch of new music from White, which White even encouraged fans to pirate.

For those who aren’t interested in scrounging for pirate album links online (or perhaps couldn’t find one, or would just prefer the convenience of streaming), good news has arrived: Today (July 31), White has announced the official release of the album, dubbed No Name. An exclusive vinyl edition will be available in Third Man stores on August 1, and a broader release to DSPs and streaming services will follow on August 2.

A press release notes the project was recorded, produced, and mixed by White himself, at Third Man Studio in 2023 and 2024. The physical release was then pressed to vinyl at Third Man Pressing, and is of course released by Third Man Records, making this about as DIY as an album can be.

Check out the album cover art and tracklist (the songs have names now!) below.

Demi Moore Called ‘The Substance,’ Her Gore- And Nudity-Filled New Movie With Margaret Qualley, A ‘Wild Ride’

It’s become increasingly hard to force any sort of genre on art lately. For instance, The Bear is a comedy to some, while it’s a horror story to those of us who have had the honor of working in a high-traffic kitchen. But those often end up being the best type of entertainment, so let’s just embrace the multi-genre of it all!

Demi Moore’s new movie, The Substance, appears to be a mix of comedy, horror, and a hint of love, which reminded the actress of her role in Best Picture nominee Ghost.

“Reading Ghost, I thought, ‘Wow, we’ve got a love story, a thriller and a comedy. This could either be a disaster, or come together and somehow work.’ [The Substance] fits into that category,” Moore told Empire. No word yet on if The Substance in question is actually just some clay that needs to be worked.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance follows Moore as a former A-lister who is fired from her TV show and discovers a controversial new drug that makes users temporarily reborn as a younger, more beautiful version of themselves. Moore was hesitant to join but soon felt it was just weird enough to work. “My team sent it with a caveat of, ‘[We] don’t want to say anything about it, just read it,’ Because even on paper, it takes you on such a wild ride,” she said. “Yet it had real depth, and the subject is so important.”

The Substance debuted earlier this year at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where Moore’s performance was praised by critics. “It’s such a unique way to explore the issue of ageing, and the male perspective of the idealized woman that we’ve bought into,” the actress added. The movie also stars Margaret Qualley and nepo dad Dennis Quaid.

You can see The Substance in theaters on September 20.

USA Basketball Made Two Big Starting Lineup Changes Against South Sudan

After Sunday’s dominant win over Serbia, the USA men’s basketball team left little in the way of questions about their ability to win yet another gold medal. However, that wasn’t to say the game didn’t cause a bit of a stir due to rotation choices by coach Steve Kerr, particularly Jayson Tatum being the odd man out of the rotation (along with Tyrese Haliburton, which was expected) in Kevin Durant’s return.

Kerr said leaving a guy as talented as Tatum on the bench all game made him feel “like an idiot,” but noted it was a matchup situation and that Tatum would play in their next game against South Sudan. Beyond Tatum’s absence from the rotation, the Americans continued their trend of sluggish starts with Joel Embiid in the starting lineup, as he finished as a -8 in 11 minutes of play in a 26-point win. Since the exhibition games, fans have been calling for Anthony Davis to move into the starting lineup, as he just fits better with the style of play this USA team is best at, which is pushing the pace and trying to get up and down the floor.

On Wednesday, Kerr made it clear that he’s seeing all of these things too, and made a pair of starting lineup changes for the South Sudan game — looking to avoid another scare like they got in London a week ago.

Davis entered the starting lineup for Embiid, while Tatum joined the starting group after not playing last game, with Jrue Holiday moving to the bench. Given South Sudan’s size, it seems Kerr wanted to go with a more switchable lineup 2-5, with Stephen Curry remaining at the point, and now he has some options to try and create a bench lineup that is maybe more suited to Embiid’s strengths — or just not play him at all, as he was the lone DNP of the first half.

A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Director Once (Unknowingly!) Lied To President Obama About Jon Snow’s Fate

Jon Snow Game of Thrones
HBO

Game of Thrones director and producer David Nutter, also known as the guy who directed the Red Wedding episode, is familiar with death. Obviously! Anyone who worked on that show was. So when Jon Snow died at the end of season five, Nutter continued to play along with the idea that the know nothing would not be returning, so much so that he unintentionally lied to the president of the United States, something that isn’t illegal but a bit morally ambiguous.

Nutter, who directed nine episodes of the series, recently spoke to The L.A. Times about his Emmy-winning season five finale, which you may recall as the time Jon Snow bit the dust. This sparked outrage amongst fans, including one very important government official who tried to get to the bottom of it.

“I never wanted to read past where I was in the story,” Nutter began, implying that he did not know where season six would pick up in the story back in 2016. “Right after the season ended, there was a big political event with Barack Obama, and we were at Chuck Lorre’s house. Obama was a huge fan of Game of Thrones. I took a picture with Barack. He grabbed me and shook my hand, and he put his [other] hand on my shoulder and whispered, ‘You didn’t kill Jon Snow, did you?’ I said, ‘Sir, he’s dead. He’s deader than dead.’”

For your own personal reference, under Section 1001 of title 18 of the United States Code, it is a federal crime to “knowingly and willfully make a materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the United States.” So, no, you can’t lie to the president. Luckily, Nutter really seemed to think that Snow was dead because, at one point, he was, so he didn’t technically do anything illegal, unless you count “killing” Jon Snow.

When The L.A. Times asked if not knowing the future of the story made it easier, Nutter replied, “Yeah, much easier. You want to give it the gravitas it needs.” If he had known exactly how the story had ended, perhaps he would have had a different take on it all.

Snail Mail Shares Her Soaring Cover Of A Smashing Pumpkins Classic From The ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ Soundtrack’

Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw The TV Glow has one of the most stacked soundtracks of the year, with songs from Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, and Sloppy Jane featuring Phoebe Bridgers. Another highlight is Snail Mail‘s soaring cover of “Tonight, Tonight” by The Smashing Pumpkins, which had previously only been featured on the vinyl edition of the soundtrack (it was unfortunately mostly edited out of the film, too). But the Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness classic is now available on streaming.

“This all came together really serendipitously,” Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan, who also plays Tara in I Saw The TV Glow, said in a statement. “We had been working on this cover to play on the Valentine tour, before I got the part. It came up early on because I have a tattoo on my right arm of the man in the moon to commemorate the first ever science fiction film, A Trip To The Moon and the Smashing Pumpkins video for ‘Tonight, Tonight.’ While reading the script, I discovered the arch nemesis of the Pink Opaque is inspired by the same imagery. I told Jane we were doing this cover in NYC, they came and saw it live, and the rest was herstory.”

You can listen to Snail Mail’s cover above.

I Saw The TV Glow is available to watch on digital.

Shaboozey’s Jolly ‘Drink Don’t Need No Mix’ Video With BigXthaPlug Captures The Debauchery Of A Whiskey-Filled Night

Shaboozey and BigXthaPlug take over a dive bar for some drunken shenanigans in their “Drink Don’t Need No Mix” video. The video captures the debauchery as Shaboozey shoots pool and double fists a glass and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. Bar fights, body shots, and borderline flashing punctuate the hedonistic action. It all looks like a fun night out and one humongous headache the next morning for at least one patron — but not Shaboozey, who departs with a pair of companions and a big grin at the camera.

“Drink Don’t Need No Mix” appears on Shaboozey’s new album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, which came out in May, punctuating the genre-jumping Nigerian Virginian’s precipitous rise to stardom over the past year. After appearing twice on Beyoncé’s personal Great American Songbook, Cowboy Carter, he released the J-Kwon homage “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” jumping to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and launching J-Kwon back into the limelight, incidentally).

In September, Shaboozey heads out on tour in support of the new album after playing Outside Lands festival in August. It’s safe to say he’s got plenty to celebrate; let’s just hope he drinks responsibly.

You can watch Shaboozey’s “Drink Don’t Need No Mix” video with BigXthaPlug above.

Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going is out now via American Dogwood/EMPIRE. Find more information here.
