Kevin Costner Sounds Peeved Over ‘Horizon’ Being Referred To As ‘A Passion Project’

horizon
warner bros.

I will be the first to admit that I called Kevin Costner‘s Horizon a “passion project.” To be fair, the man began working on this movie in 1988, so, yes, he is passionate about it! You don’t work on something for over 30 years just to be stubborn, even though Costner is known for being a little stubborn.

But apparently, he does not like to admit that he has passions, aside from banana milkshakes. After fans and critics called Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 a passion project, Costner wasn’t super happy.

“Calling it that actually minimizes it,” Costner told AARP. He went on to say that he is passionate about all of his work. Does that include Yellowstone? Who knows.

He added, “I’ve been passionate about a lot of things that I’ve done. This is a good idea about America. People came west. It’s part of our legacy. I just believed in it so much that I put my money into it, but I’ve had that belief about everything in my life.”

So why did it take so long? Maybe his passion died down after nobody wanted to fund the expensive franchise. “I commissioned a script in 1988, and we kept fiddling with it and finally tried to make it in 2003. But I wanted more money than the studio was willing to pay. I was disappointed. After that I sat down with a new writer, and I became a cowriter. And we began to expand and reengineer everything,” he explained. That’s passion!

Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 hit theaters earlier this summer, but due to poor reviews and a bad box office debut, Part 2 will not get a theatrical release. Good thing Costner doesn’t care! He said, “Movies aren’t just about opening weekend. Ten years later, a good movie will still be shared. Success is: Will you revisit it and show your daughter, show your son? Will you revisit it because you wonder about it, because you find new details? Those are the measures.”

It’s unclear if anyone will share Horizon a decade from now but hey, cult classics are born every day. You never know what will work 10 years down the line. All we can really do is assume that there will be at least three more Minions movies by then.

Snoop Dogg Blew Off Simone Biles’ Mom Years Ago And She Let Him Know About It At The 2024 Olympics

Getty Image

As of this post, the United States is crushing it at the 2024 Olympics, as the US is tied with host country France for the most total medals, with 14. Perhaps the most visible American at the games, though, has been Snoop Dogg, as an official torch bearer and member of NBC’s Olympics broadcast team.

That came back to (playfully) bite him in the (figurative) butt, though, as Snoop found himself (literally) face-to-face with a (low-stakes) demon from his past.

As part of NBC’s coverage, Snoop and Hoda Kotb had a chat with some members of star gymnast Simone Biles’ family. At one point during the segment, Kotb mentioned in reference to Biles’ mother, “Snoop, I don’t know if you know this, but Simone and you have known each other for a long time, right, Nellie?”

Nellie then told her story: “I remember, I will never forget that we met you in Times Square [in] 2010, and you said, ‘cause we asked for a picture, and you said, ‘Two minutes.’ One, two, and you were gone.”

There was nothing bitter about the good-natured call-out, as everybody had a good laugh over the anecdote. Check out the clip, which took place during the opening ceremony, below.

MJ Lenderman Pleads ‘Please Don’t Laugh’ On ‘Joker Lips,’ His Newest Song Ahead Of His ‘Manning Fireworks’ Album

Last month, MJ Lenderman announced Manning Fireworks by releasing “She’s Leaving You,” which made Uproxx’s “Best New Indie” roundup. On Monday, July 29, Lenderman revealed another track from his forthcoming album in “Joker Lips,” a pleasant-sounding song with brutally honest lyrics.

“Coward cutting Joker lips / Into a rubber mask / Please don’t ask / How I’m doing,” the North Carolina-based artist sings alongside The Wind, surrounded by plants in a field. The press released described the accompanying Ben Turok-directed video as showcasing “an overgrown field clung to the side of a mountain in Western North Carolina as plants seemingly envelop the band.”

“Joker Lips” might prove to be the Manning Fireworks thesis statement, given that the album was previously billed as Lenderman at “the intersection of wit and sadness.” The nine-track LP will arrive on September 6 as Lenderman’s fourth full-length studio album and first album under ANTI-.

Lenderman also announced his MJ Lenderman & The Wind 2024 Fall US Tour, beginning in September.

The Charro Negro Is The Summer Cocktail Everyone’s Talking About – Here’s How To Make It

the_drink_of_the_summer(1024x450)
Uproxx

All the bartender influencers and Tiktok drinks experts have called it — summer 2024 is all about the Charro Negro. This simple tequila-based cocktail is not only easy to make (we’re talking no skill required) but also refreshing, indulgent, and downright delicious. So… what is it?

The Charro Negro is a simple combination of blanco tequila, lime juice, and Mexican Coke. It’s essentially a Cuba Libre but not as sweet with a more pronounced focus on citrus. Alternately, I like to think of it less like a Cuba Libre and more like a richer version of the Paloma. The drink gets its name from the Mexican legend of El Charro Negro, a demonic horserider (“charro” translates to horseman or cowboy) who stalks the outskirts of various small Mexican towns looking to collect debts owed to the devil or punish people for their moral transgressions, depending on who is telling you the story.

Like much of Mexican folklore, it’s dark and creepy (I’ve heard plenty growing up from family members trying to terrify me) but the drink is anything but. Charro Negro is a real people pleaser and its simplicity makes it a perfect party drink. Since it’s not as commonly known as the Cuba Libre or Paloma, you have a real opportunity here to introduce your friends to something new to them, and that’s always something you want in your drink crafting arsenal.

Let’s dive in, we promise you that you’ll knock this out on your first try!

Charro Negro

Dane Rivera

Ingredients:

  • 1.5-3 oz. blanco tequila
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Ice
  • Mexican Coca-Cola

Simple right? You’re going to go with one to two jiggers of a quality additive-free blanco tequila, we went with LALO but any of the 20 bottles from this list will do (or this list if you want a high-end spin), fresh lime juice, and a Mexican Coke. You might be asking yourself: “Can I just use regular Coke?” and sure, in a pinch, you can. But here is why Mexican Coke is the better option:

Aside from it being more authentic (this is a Mexican cantina drink after all) Mexican Coke has a different flavor from the US stuff. It is made with real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup which gives it a darker, more earthy, ~almost chocolatey~ richness. That helps the drink have more dimension and nuance, and considering this is such a simple drink, you’re going to want that nuance.

Mexican Coke is everywhere in Southern California, if that’s not the case for you, then I’d look for a bottle at alcohol specialty stores like BevMo or Total Wine, or just hit up a local taqueria or Chipotle in a pinch.

What You’ll Need:

  • Highball Glass
  • Pairing knife
  • Juicer
  • Jigger
Dane Rivera

Method:

  • Add the rum, juices, and coconut to a cocktail shaker with a large handful of ice. Affix the lid and shake vigorously for about 20 to 30 seconds until the shaker is ice cold and the drink is nice and frothy. There’s a lot of liquid in the shaker with this one, so start slowly and build up speed.
  • Fill the glass with fresh ice — about 3/4 full. Strain the cocktail into the glass. Dash nutmeg over the top of the drink and garnish with a pineapple wedge and cherry. Serve.
  • Fill a highball glass with ice, cut a lime in half and add the juice and one to two jiggers of the blanco tequila of your choice.
  • Top with Mexican Coca-Cola until the glass is full, give it a good mix with a spoon (or the knife you used to cut the lime), and garnish with a lime wheel on the rim. Serve

You could salt the rim, and while I’ll admit this looks better, I think the salty flavor distracts from the richness of the drink.

Bottom Line:

Dane Rivera

You can’t go wrong with a Charro Negro. It’s a rich, and well-balanced between bright citrus notes and deep chocolate tones, and it’s addictively sweet — the perfect cocktail for summer.

Tequila cocktails are often associated with tart citrus-dominated flavors, and while the vegetal qualities of tequila play well with those flavors, the Charro Negro will open up your mind to just how versatile tequila can be.

I’ve yet to find a person who doesn’t thoroughly enjoy this drink and the way their eyes light up on the first taste is priceless.

Some Olympians Are Turning To OnlyFans To Earn Some Extra Money, Including One Who Says It ‘Saved My Life’

It would be nice if the swimmers, water polo players, and gymnasts who compete at the Olympics made as much money as NFL players, but that is not the case. So to help achieve their goal of winning the gold, many former and current Olympic athletes have turned to OnlyFans as a side hustle.

“Yes, I try and make extra money,” British diver Jack Laugher told The Telegraph. “Obviously, I’ve got something people want, and I’ll happily cash in on that. I’m a bit of a hustler and I want a bit more money if I can [get it].”

Divers aren’t exactly jumping into piles of gold, Scrooge McDuck-style. “The funding [in diving] hasn’t changed. When I first went on [in 2011], it was £21,000 for the top eight in the world,” he explained. “And at the time, as a 16-year-old, I was buzzing. But I’m almost 30 now, I’m top three in the world, and it is £28,000 a year.” In American dollars, that’s a little over $36,000, which is barely enough to get by when you’re training six days a week, eight hours per day, according to his teammate Tom Daley.

So, OnlyFans it is, although don’t expect to see anything too scandalous.

Though Laugher’s OnlyFans account might shock some, it’s hardly uncommon on the Team [Great Britain] diving squad. Other team members including Noah Williams (24) who will compete in Paris, Rio bronze medallist Daniel Goodfellow (27), and Tokyo gold medallist Matty Lee (26) are all on the platform. None offer explicit content, and as Jack Laugher notes, the group are regularly pictured wearing less in mainstream Olympics coverage.

Speed skater and three-time Olympian Elise Christie credits OnlyFans for saving her life after she retired from the sport.

“I had lost my house and was working three jobs at the time… [OnlyFans] brought me back from a really dark place, and I now use it positively,” she explained. “I use it as engagement for fans that have been with me for a long time. Once… you are using it in the way that you are comfortable with, you’re not forced into things or doing things you don’t want to do, you can use it in the way you want to use it. I have had a lot of negativity as well, but at the end of the day, it kind of saved my life at one point as I had nothing.”

Here are a few others who have turned to OnlyFans:

Kevin Abstract’s Nostalgic New Song ‘Big Dog’ Reflects On A Lost Love

Although his last solo album, Blanket only about six months old, Kevin Abstract is apparently already working on his next one. After releasing “Tennessee” with Lil Nas X in May, today, the multidisciplinary Texan artist follows up with “Big Dog,” a wistful track that finds him reminiscing about an old relationship and pondering, “How deep his sleep? /Do he think of me? Do he dream of me?” While the song is technically a solo, the production credits do include longtime Brockhampton homie Romil Hemnani, along with Popstar Benny, Quadeca, and Mino.

This album’s direction appears to be more rap focused after Blanket took a hard turn into alt-rock, which seemed to leave some fans a little baffled. “Big Dog” pulls from more conventional urban sounds, incorporating New Orleans bounce, and a majority of the vocals are rapped before the instrumental breaks down into a gentle ballad. Likewise, “Tennessee” featured raps from both Kevin and Lil Nas X, further suggesting that this new album will find him going back to his roots.

In addition to rolling out his new solo project, Kevin makes an appearance on the upcoming album from Toro Y Moi, Hole Erth, singing along on “Heaven.”

You can listen to “Big Dog” above.

Wesley Snipes Once Found Found Ryan Reynolds To Be Too ‘Over The Top’ But Is Now Glad He Can Get That Itch Out With ‘Deadpool

blade
New Line Cinema

Warning: spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine ahead.

.
.
.
.
.

Last month, Wesley Snipes threw some words of warning over to Marvel when rumors started swirling that the Blade reboot was facing numerous stalls in production. But while it seemed like he was dragging them, maybe he was teasing his return.

Out of all the impressive cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine, Snipes showing up was one of the biggest surprises, especially considering his past with Ryan Reynolds. “Some of the things he did back in those days, that’s not really my humor,” Snipes told Entertainment Weekly. And he has a point! Reynolds starred alongside Snipes in 2004’s Blade: Trinity, which was right around his Van Wilder days. He was still finding his niche.

On the other hand, Snipes had already found his niche, and he didn’t care for Reynolds. “I’m not tuned in that way. So I thought, ‘Well, it’s a little over the top for me.’ But seeing him do it in this context [in Deadpool & Wolverine] made a lot of sense. And seeing him do it and do it well, Ryan does something that most people can’t do. He’s unique in that way, and he’s found a fantastic niche for himself doing what he does. Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds all day long. So it was enjoyable. It was enjoyable to work with him. It was enjoyable to revisit.”

Snipes has been keeping himself busy over the last few years, as he recently starred in Coming 2 America, and Netflix’s True Story. But he has always been open to returning to Marvel, he just didn’t think they wanted him back.

“I did not think it was possible,” Snipes continued. “I didn’t think we would be able to pull it off. I didn’t think that Marvel was into it, Disney was into it – also because they had Mahershala [Ali] cast for the next upcoming version of it … I thought it didn’t make sense to me.” Marvel cast Ali in a Blade reboot which has been in development hell for years. After that, Snipes thought his chance was done.

But things changed when he got a text from Reynolds. “But [when] you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue after 20 years, you go, ‘Okay, I got to take this call. Let’s see what this is about,’” he explained. “He told me the idea… They said ‘yes’ and ‘it’s a go.’ ‘If you’re in, we’re in.’ Here we are.” Snipes was able to return as Blade in the film, and his cameo was largely kept a secret…unlike others.

Deadpool & Wolverine is currently playing in theaters.

Gwyneth Paltrow Did Not Hide Her Confused Reaction To Robert Downey Jr’s Surprise Doctor Doom Role

Over the weekend, studios dropped so much casting news at San Diego Comic-Con, and much of those announcements were just that: casting news. However, one tidbit from Marvel’s panels yielded a real scratcher, and that would be the revelation of Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU to portray Doctor Doom.

Say what? Downey, of course, portrayed Tony Stark for over a decade until definitively ending that character’s life with an “I am Iron Man” and a snap. Stark is, of course, remaining dead, and the Doctor Doom casting now puts Downey into a different type of MCU spotlight, but Hall H did break into applause, as the below Variety video reveals.

Well, Gwyneth Paltrow, who appeared as Pepper Potts alongside Downey in several MCU movies (but don’t ask which films, because she won’t remember), did not hide her confusion, and commented on RDJ’s Instagram post to that effect: “I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?”

This might be the most relatable sentiment ever from the GOOP CEO. How can RDJ pull off two lead characters in the same universe? Of course this doesn’t make sense, and only RDJ could explain his reasoning for climbing back into a helmet. It is, however, easy to see why Kevin Feige wanted to go there. With Jonathan Majors’ recent post-conviction firing, the MCU needed to completely retool its future with plans for a Kang-free continuation. Also, it’s no secret that most MCU movies have not fared well at the box office since Endgame, which was the final movie for both RDJ and Chris Evans. (And not every movie, sadly, can star Deadpool or bring Deadpool-type box-office results).

Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers (who are also magically back in the MCU again, several years after Avengers: Endgame) were more enthused than Paltrow: “We’ve always said green is your color.”

Additionally, Variety is drawing attention to a 2023 interview, in which Feige and Iron Man director/Happy actor Jon Favreau discussed how RDJ had originally gone for the Doctor Doom role in those Fantastic Four movies of the aughts. Fortunately, he turned into Iron Man instead, and it remains to be seen how the newfound Doom addition will roll out. Only Feige and the Russo Brothers could fill in those gaps right now, and everybody else is free to remain confused. Including Gwyneth Paltrow.

Drake Collaborated On A New Song But Didn’t Get Credited At All, He Just Claimed On Instagram

Gordo (formerly known as DJ Carnage) just dropped a new album called Diamante, and it’s one Drake fans have had their eyes on: Drizzy features on a pair of tracks from the project, “Sideways” and “Healing.” The way Drake sees it, though, there’s actually a third track from the project on which he should be credited but currently isn’t.

In an Instagram Story posted last night/this morning (July 29), Drake shared a screenshot of the track “Cafecito” (which was released as a single in May) and wrote, “I made this beat with you but it’s all good… [pepper emojis] @gordoszn.”

According to the track’s credits on Spotify, Drake is not officially credited on the song. Nicki Nicole and Sech are credited as performers alongside Gordo, and Gordo is credited as the track’s sole producer.

Even beyond Gordo, Drake has been in a collaborative mode lately. An unreleased Lil Yachty collaboration popped up on Kai Cenat’s stream. He guested on two Camila Cabello songs, “Hot Uptown” and “Uuugly.” Of course, this all follows Her Loss, Drake’s joint album with 21 Savage. His latest solo album, 2023’s For All The Dogs, also includes link-ups with people like Teezo Touchdown, Savage, J. Cole, Yeat, SZA, PartyNextDoor, Chief Keef, Bad Bunny, Sexyy Red, and Yachty.
