Husband is certain wife’s baby name will cause too much pain for their child. Is he wrong?

It’s one thing to debate with your spouse over giving your child a name that is so unique it could cause them trouble. It’s another to fight with your spouse over giving your child a name that is so incredibly common it’s used as a placeholder when an unidentified man has passed away.

This was the problem a Reddit user (The_Doeberman), whose last name is Doe, faced when his wife wanted to name their baby boy after her grandfather, John.

“My wife is six months pregnant and wants to name our future son after her grandfather, who died of cancer in September. His name was John,” the husband wrote on the AITA forum

“I liked her grandfather, and I know he and my wife were very close, but I won’t even consider it, not even for our son’s middle name,” he continued. “I feel that’s just setting him up for a world of problems, especially when he grows up and has to apply for jobs. Nobody’s going to believe ‘John Doe’ is his real name.”

The wife thought that the husband was being difficult for vetoing the name and claimed he was “exaggerating” the issues the child would face.

But he has a pretty strong argument. The name John Doe is synonymous with the unclaimed dead body that someone finds in a roadside motel in the middle of nowhere or an anonymous victim of trauma that can’t be named in court documents. It’s also often used as a placeholder, which could cause the child problems when applying for college or a job.

There is no exact answer to why John Doe was chosen to represent the “everyman,” but it has been used in the UK for hundreds of years. It’s believed because John Doe was a popular name at the time. Later, in the US, unidentified females would come to be known as Jane Doe.

The husband used Reddit’s AITA page to ask whether he was in the wrong and the commenters were overwhelmingly supportive of him.

One commenter thought that “John Doe” was a bad idea but gave a solution that could work for the wife. “People will think it’s a fake name. It’s going to cause him major problems with passports and ID as well as job and college applications. He may have issues with medical stuff etc.,” they wrote. Instead, they suggested using an alternative version of “John” from another language.

“As an example only: Look for other languages’ version of John. For example Eoin is the Irish way of spelling Owen. Eoin in itself is the Irish version of John…” they wrote.

Another commenter was blunt about their objection.

“I’m not superstitious, but I’d feel uncomfortable having a kid whose name basically stands for ‘found dead in the park, stab wound to the chest, no ID,’” they added.

One commenter noted all of the legal troubles that could come with having the name John Doe.

“I imagine a lifetime of getting stopped by the TSA for enhanced screening, of job applications being tossed for being fake and just everything being harder than it should be because you have a fake name,” they wrote. “If giving him the grandfather’s name is so important, why not give him the grandpa’s middle name?”

In the end, it’s touching for a mother to name their newborn son after her grandfather, but according to the father and a legion of people online, “John Doe” simply carries too much baggage and would be more of a hindrance than a tribute. The good news is that there are many ways that the wife can pay homage to her grandfather that won’t make her son’s life more difficult.

According to reports, Yo Gotti’s CMG Records team is in mourning. Yesterday (July 21), following signee EST Gee’s highly anticipated homecoming concert, the “Never Scared” rapper’s longtime friend and manager, EST Big Beach, was supposedly killed (as told by WDRB) in Louisville, Kentucky.

The local outlet shared that EST Big Beach (real name Devontae Beach) was found inside a vehicle with riddled with gunshot wounds by emergency responders. Beach was in town to support his client and friend’s EST Gee & Friends Summer Jam concert being held at KFC Yum Center the day prior.

In the report, Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Aaron Ellis provided further details. Supposedly, a local reached out to local authorities to report a shooting around the 800 block of West Main Street in the late evening hours. Around 1:30 a.m., police arrived to the scene to find Beach. Although Emergency Medical Services were called to the area to tend to the matter, but sadly Beach was pronounced dead.

Since the incident, LMPD’s Homicide Unit has opened an investigation. However, at this time, they reportedly do not have any suspects.

None of the CMG Records team have issued a public statement regarding EST Big Beach’s alleged death. But that hasn’t stopped fans and local supporters from flooding the music professional’s comment section across Instagram with touching tributes.

Chris Brown is hot water. The “No Guidance” singer is currently traveling around the country for his 11:11 Tour, and while in Fort Worth, Texas, he was reportedly involved in a full-out brawl.

According to TMZ, Brown, members of his crew, including Yella Beezy and Sinko Ceej as Live Nation, have been named in a $50 million lawsuit. The documents obtained by the outlet allege that on July 20, the group physically assaulted four fans backstage at Dickies Arena.

The supposed victims (Larry Parker, Joseph Lewis, Charles Bush, and Da Marcus Powell) claimed that following Brown’s performance they were invited backstage. When they met up with Brown, they praised his performance earlier in the evening. But after a brief friendly exchange, things toured sour.

Bush said that a member of Brown’s team attempted to rile the entertainer up, recounting a supposed ongoing beef. He went on to say, they were immediately pounced on by up to ten people. An alleged assailant known as Hood Boss supposedly threw a chair, which struck him in the head. He also claimed Brown commanded Yella Beezy and others to join in on the alleged assault, which he says lasted 10 minutes.

In a statement, the attorney representing the alleged victims, Tony Buzbee, said each of the four men sustained severe injuries which required medical treatments. As of today (July 22), one of the supposed victims is still in the hospital.

The alleged victims have also reportedly filed for restraining orders against Brown, Yella Beezy, and Sinko Ceej.

Hospice nurse who’s seen a hundred people die shares the one regret her patients always have

As the old saying goes, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” Sadly, this hard truth becomes increasingly evident as we reach our final days. The things we take for granted today, such as our health, relationships, and time itself, become much more precious when we know they are about to end.

How much happier would we be every day if we lived with the perspective of those who are experiencing their final days?

Julie McFadden, known to her hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, as Hospice Nurse Julie, helps people appreciate their lives by regularly sharing her experiences with those who are living their final days.

Recently, she stopped by Rob Moore’s “The Disruptors” podcast, where she shared some of the big lessons she’s learned from the dying. Moore is a public speaker, entrepreneur and bestselling author of “Life Leverage.”

Given his background as an entrepreneur, Moore assumed that when people reach their final days, they regret the amount of time they spend working. “People definitely say that. ‘I wish I didn’t work my life away. I wish I didn’t wait until retirement to do the things I wanted to do,'” McFadden said. However, there is another big regret that many share. “The main thing people say, that I don’t hear a lot of people mention, is ‘I wish I would have appreciated my health,’” she added.

“I think the biggest thing I hear from people [who are] dying is that they wish they would have appreciated how well they how well they felt before,” she continued.

It seems that when people’s health begins to decline, they miss the vitality they never fully appreciated.

“I think most people take for granted things that have always been,” she told Moore. “You know, it’s really easy to forget. We’re so lucky to be alive in this moment. We’re taking a breath right now. We’re here on a rock that’s like soaring through space. I mean, that alone can blow your mind.”

McFadden believes that her profession reminds her to be grateful because dying is just as natural as living.

“I think because of my job, it’s easier for me to see how once-in-a-lifetime this is. The fact that everything works together in our bodies to make us live and grow and I see that in-depth, too. I see how our bodies are biologically built to die,” she said. “That, right there, is so fascinating. We literally have built-in mechanisms to help us die. Our body can naturally do it. That’s wild.”

To get the most out of the miracle of life, McFadden writes a gratitude list every night so she’s sure to appreciate everything she has. Because, in the blink of an eye, it can be gone. “I like the fact that I can breathe, I’m walking around, I can feel the sunshine – little things like that,” she shared.

Our lives are filled with incredible gifts, whether it’s the people we love, the amazing things our bodies can do, or the places we get to see. But without gratitude, these beautiful gifts can easily go unnoticed and unappreciated. Practicing gratitude allows us to cherish these moments, so we’re fulfilled by what we have, instead of disillusioned by what we don’t.

The Four Tops’ Duke Fakir, The Last Original Member Of The Group, Has Died At Age 88

Abdul “Duke” Fakir, who sang in the Four Tops for 70 years, has died at age 88, as the last original member of the group. According to Rolling Stone, his family confirmed to the Associated Press that he died of heart failure today.

In a statement, the family wrote, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our loving husband of 50 years, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and forever Four Tops, Abdul Kareem Fakir, better known as Duke. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a trailblazer, icon and music legend who, through his 70-year music career, touched the lives of so many as he continued to tour until the end of 2023, and officially retired this year. As the last living founding member of the iconic Four Tops music group, we find solace in Duke’s legacy living on through his music for generations to come.”

The Four Tops was formed in 1953 when its members were students at Detroit’s Pershing High School. The band originally consisted of Fakir, Levi Stubbs, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, and Lawrence Payton. Unlike many bands of the time (especially their labelmates on Motown), the lineup remained consistent throughout its tenure until Peyton died of liver cancer in 1997. Benson and Stubbs passed in 2005 and 2008, respectively, and Fakir continued the group after recruiting a new group of vocalists, who have continued performing to this day. Fakir made it a point not to retire; he only stopped performing in 2023 for medical reasons.

In his 2022 memoir I’ll Be There: My Life With The Four Tops, he wrote, “I’m not going to ever retire. The Lord can retire me, but I’m not going to into the dark night quietly. I know I’m not in the fourth quarter anymore. I’m in overtime.” Through their 70 years, the Four Tops became known for a string of hits, including “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” both Billboard No. 1s, and “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got).”

A ‘Cobra Kai’ Actor Opened Up About Why Their Character Went To The Dark Side

Cobra Kai
Netflix

(Spoilers will be found below, so beware.)

Cobra Kai released the first third of the final season last week, and as viewers now know, a high-ranking member of Miyagi-do has now reteamed with former Cobra Kai terror-sensei, John Kreese. He’s back on the scene after springing himself from prison, although the show doesn’t dwell on whether he was fully exonerated by Stingray’s retracted accusations following Terry Silver’s arrest.

Maybe we’ll hear more about those details in the future, but for now, we’ve seen that Kreese is training a new dojo and having hallucinations in the woods, although he did take time out to visit Tory. He tried to sway her back into his fold, and she wasn’t having it, given her knowledge that Kreese had fixed her victory (by bribing a ref) a few seasons prior at the All Valley Tournament. However, the end of Season 6, Episode 5 shows that Tory decided to attend the Sekai Taikai international tournament on the dark side. What prompted this decision? Collider’s Perri Nemiroff asked for clarification on what “Tory thinks she can get from Kreese that she can’t get from the people around her who clearly love her so much,” and here’s how actress Peyton List responded:

PEYTON LIST: That’s a really good question. I think what she can get from him is being his number one, and she can’t be anyone else’s number one.

TANNER BUCHANAN: Just throwing Robby under the bus on that one.

LIST: [Laughs] An authority figure!

That part of the season wasn’t handled in the most nuanced way. Tory had revealed mid-sparring that her mother had passed away, and both Daniel and Johnny decided that the fighting should end because Tory was clearly working something out on Samantha. Tory then stomped off, and nobody went after her, which makes zero sense in the context of Miyagi-do, and Tory apparently never even touched base with her boyfriend, Robby, about her decision to rejoin with Kreese. Generally, Cobra Kai manages to overcome story blips like these due to the show’s heightened sense of reality, but Tory’s actions remained puzzling, until now, that is. Hopefully, more texture will arrive regarding that heartbreaking decision when the show returns in November.

LeBron James Took Over Late Against Germany To Save Team USA For The Second Straight Game

After cruising through their first three exhibition games in their tune up for the Paris Olympics, the USA men’s basketball team has found themselves in some perilous positions the last two games. South Sudan had shots in the air to beat the Americans on Saturday, and on Monday night Team USA found itself down three going into the fourth quarter against the reigning World Cup champions in Germany at the O2 Arena in London.

In that fourth quarter, things remained tense as the two teams went back and forth, with Team USA grabbing the lead back thanks to some terrific defense and a relentless downhill attack. Stephen Curry and Devin Booker provided a pair of tough and-1 finishes to put Team USA in front in the fourth.

Then it became the LeBron James show, as the newly announced USA flag bearer put together a bucket-steal-bucket sequence to give Team USA a three-point advantage late.

However, the Germans would not go away quietly, finding some big buckets from Franz Wagner (18 points) and Andreas Obst (14 points), and cut the lead back down to one on a lob from Dennis Schröder (13 points, 10 assists) to Daniel Theis (13 points).

But as was the case on Saturday night, LeBron was there to bail out the Americans. James buried just their sixth made three of the night at the right time to push the lead back out to four.

After Germany’s Andreas Obst missed a clean look at a three and then bounced a floater off the rim on the ensuing possession, it was LeBron’s turn to put the game on ice as he just physically overpowered the Germans, getting inside and patiently going up for a strong finish at the hoop.

James finished with a team-high 20 points, with six rebounds and four assists, and his late game takeover has become something of a habit after doing the same to South Sudan to prevent a massive upset on Saturday. It’s probably not ideal that Team USA has needed the 39-year-old James to carry them to wins down the stretch in exhibition action, but it’s certainly a nice luxury to have that option at your disposal.

Germany was just not quite able to produce enough offense late in the game, as they missed some good looks (none better than the Obst three that went begging with a chance to pull within one) but also found it difficult to get inside against the size and length of the USA roster. That figures to be a theme going forward, as teams are going to bomb away from three and hope to beat Team USA that way, because you can’t consistently get to the rim against the American defenders. That said, there is danger for Team USA with that as the strategy against them, because they seem allergic to taking threes themselves and the math game is going to go against them a lot of nights — on Monday, they were 6-of-17 from three while Germany was 13-of-45.

Still, they have an incredible advantage inside and will wear on teams, and as we’ve seen the last two games, they also have something no other nation has, which is LeBron James to close things out.

Glen Powell Knows When ‘Top Gun 3’ Will Start Filming (Of Course With Tom Cruise)

Glen Powell Top Gun Maverick
Paramount

Glen Powell is everywhere these days, and yet he somehow didn’t know about Brat Summer, so he’s clearly got a lot on his mind. The actor/Brisket’s dad has been tornadoing around the globe to promote Twisters, but that doesn’t stop him from working on other things simultaneously, including the potential Top Gun installment alongside his good buddy Tom Cruise. These two never stop working!

Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast when they were asked which will come sooner: a Normal People follow-up or another Top Gun sequel. Powell seemed locked in. “I mean I have a date.” Edgar-Jones then confirmed that there has been no news regarding another Normal People season. Sorry, Paul Mescal hive, but he’s busy, too.

The interviewer pressed further about Top Gun 3, but Powell didn’t reveal any more secrets. “Absolutely not. We should go to the next question,” he joked before Tom Cruise could even have a chance to helicopter in and steal Powell away from the audience.

Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters in 2022 and became the first significant post-pandemic blockbuster. The success only increased Tom Cruise’s love of movies even more.

Earlier this year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that another Top Gun is in the works with Cruise, but it might take some time until it lands in theaters. “You never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.,” the producer explained. The next M:I film is slated for a May 23, 2025 release.

Meanwhile, Powell will be working on the film Huntington from John Patton Ford and then shooting The Running Man with Edgar Wright this fall, so he has a solid work queue for the next few years. But his most important job? Being a father to Brisket. That comes first.
