What Is The Meaning Behind Doja Cat’s ‘Balut?’

With Doja Cat’s fourth studio album, Scarlet, just hours away from release, anticipation for the new project couldn’t be higher. While Doja’s antics during its rollout were purposely designed to throw off some fans, Doja diehards were fascinated with her edgy singles, which included “Attention,” “Paint The Town Red,” “Demons,” and most recently, “Balut.”

However, that last one has some fans confused about its meaning. Whether that’s due to its titular reference to the Filipino street dish or fans wondering how that title relates to the song’s content, many have been wondering…

What Is The Meaning Behind Doja Cat’s “Balut?”

Balut, the dish, originates in the Philippines. It’s a simple street dish consisting of a boiled or steamed fertilized duck or chicken egg. The embryo is incubated between 14 and 21 days then steamed or boiled and eaten directly out of its shell, often with vinegar or salt. The longer the embryo has been incubated, the more it looks like a bird.

Doja’s ingenious use of the term comes from the cutthroat nature of the lyrics. In the verses, she slings such pointed insults as, “I’m the shit, you a real piece of shit / I am needed, you a real needy bitch / I’m competing, you are incompetent / You are fleeting ’cause you can’t copy this.” In a post on Instagram Stories, Doja explained, “I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive. It’s a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of ‘X’ and the end of ‘tweets.’” (The reference to “Fleets” — the short-lived copy of Snapchat and Instagram Stories — bears this out.)

Unfortunately, her explanation actually incensed some Filipino fans, who sought to correct her mischaracterization of balut. What should have been a pride-inducing moment for the culture turned into a teaching moment for Doja as fans explained that the duck embryos are no longer alive when eaten.

Cowboys Star CB Trevon Diggs Reportedly Tore His ACL At Practice

The Dallas Cowboys are off to an incredible start to the 2023 NFL season, as they have played the most complete first two weeks of anyone in the league, outscoring the Giants and Jets 70-10 in their first two games.

Dak Prescott and the offense unsurprisingly get a good bit of attention, but Dallas has looked like one of the most terrifying defenses in the league thus far, as Micah Parsons wrecks shop up front, a stout interior is incredibly difficult to run on, and the secondary has shut down the backend in the passing game. A big part of that secondary is fourth year star corner Trevon Diggs, who notched his first interception of the season on Sunday against Zach Wilson.

On Thursday, terrible news broke from Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport that Diggs was out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in Cowboys practice earlier in the day, handing a significant blow to a great defense.

For Diggs, it’s a brutal way to see his season end so early after starting it with the promise of yet another potential All-Pro campaign. For the Cowboys, they have lots of talent on the defensive side of the ball so it’s possible they can withstand this and still be a Super Bowl contender, but it certainly takes some punch out of their secondary and makes their margin for error even thinner in defending the passing game. Diggs is an elite ballhawk at corner and has steadily gotten better as a cover man in picking his spots to gamble to become a much more reliable corner down-by-down. Losing him shifts more pressure onto the rest of the secondary to make up for his absence, with Jourdan Lewis and DaRon Bland as those that will have to play bigger roles alongside Stephon Gilmore going forward this season.

You Can Buy The First Painting Bob Ross Did On TV For The Low, Low Price Of Many Millions Of Dollars

A rare piece of Bob Ross art is up for sale, and it will only cost you just shy of $10 million. You can practically taste the savings.

The piece is titled “A Walk in the Woods” and it was the very first painting that the famously frizzy-haired painter created in 1983 on his iconic TV series The Joy of Painting. According to the auction listing, the piece was used during the first episode as Ross “sets the expectations for what is to come in the show and in his art; displaying his signature style of both painting and hosting.”

More importantly, finding actual paintings from The Joy of Painting is no easy task. These puppies aren’t just lying around hence the hefty price tag.

Via Modern Artifact:

Painted by Bob Ross on air during Season 1, Episode 1 of “The Joy of Painting,” “A Walk in the Woods” is the most historically significant Bob Ross original painting ever created. It is exceedingly rare to find any Bob Ross episode pieces, and this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to own the very first one. Although Bob Ross paintings have become highly sought after by collectors, the market is still emerging. “A Walk in the Woods” is a museum-worthy piece that will set the standard for the continued development of the Bob Ross art market.

You can watch Ross create “A Walk in the Woods” in the first episode of The Joy of Painting below:

Stage And Screen Legend (And Friend Of The Muppets) Michael Caine Is (Probably) Retiring From Acting

Michael Caine has been doing movies longer than many of us have been alive, and it’s probably because he’s good at it. Or it’s because he’s British, and therefore sounds like a professional all the time, so people keep hiring him for things. Who really knows?! But the man has been in over 150 movies in his lifetime, which is less than Donald Sutherland, but still more than Anthony Hopkins. Maybe Hopkins would have come out on top if he opted to play Gandalf.

Still, Caine seems to be over the whole “prestigious actor” thing. He recently spoke to The Telegraph about his latest film The Great Escaper, and mentioned that he has been considering retirement since 2021, but now it feels real. “I wasn’t 90 then. I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that. I sort of am retired now,” the actor admitted. What does “sort of” retired mean to a 90-year-old actor? Probably just showing up for a Chris Nolan movie every once in a while, or an Instagram post with Vin Diesel. Whichever comes first.

He says that he prefers to write, hence his new book, a thriller called Deadly Game out in the fall. “And I’m very happy with that because it’s something I can do without walking. All you need is a chair and a pencil and paper,” he explained. You probably also need a computer but hey, he’s 90, he can do what he wants.

Caine was also asked about death, which he is not afraid of. “Everybody’s going to die. At least I’ve lived to f***ing 90; I didn’t die at nine, or 19, or 29. I’m 90, and I’ve had the best possible life I could have thought of. The best possible wife, and the best possible family. They may not be a family that other people would say is the best possible family – but the best possible family for me.” The best part? He got to befriend The Muppets. And that’s what makes it all worth it.

Is Blackpink Breaking Up?

For the past handful of years, Blackpink has been the most popular K-pop group in the United States and worldwide. But K-pop fans have been concerned about the group’s future ever since it was reported that the members had been negotiating a new contracting with their label, YG Entertainment, to continue as solo artists in addition to their activities as Blackpink. Now, there’s apparently some concern that Blackpink is breaking up, but the situation may not be as dire as some fans think.

Is Blackpink Breaking Up?

K-pop interest sites like AllKPop have reported that Rosé was the only member who renewed her original contract with YG, while the other three members all turned down their renewal offers. This may make it sound like they will no longer be a group, but instead, it sounds like although the other three may be represented individually by other companies, they’ll still work on Blackpink projects six months out of the year under a new agreement with YG.

Jisoo and Lisa have both signed with other South Korean companies for representation; however, there is no word yet on Jennie’s expected course of action — although she was the one who gave fans the most hope with her comments during the finale show of their Born Pink World Tour. “We will continue to be the Blackpink you love,” she told the crowd. It sure sounds like the band will continue — at least part time.

‘Ted Lasso’ Star Juno Temple Busts Out A Pretty Impressive Midwestern Accent In The First Teaser For ‘Fargo’ Season 5

The thing I miss the most about FX’s Fargo, which last aired in late 2020? It’s not the darkly-funny, Coen Brothers-inspired narratives, or the character names, although those are both good. No, the thing I miss the most is hearing respected performers like Martin Freeman, Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Jessie Buckley trying — and occasionally failing — to do a “don’t cha know” accent. Next up: Ted Lasso‘s Juno Temple, who debuts her Fargo voice (and a stun gun and baseball bat covered in nails) in the first teaser for season five. You can watch it above.

“Juno was definitely at the top of that group right away because she really embodies so much of what this character needs,” casting director Rachel Tenner told Entertainment Weekly about hiring Temple. “Like all of Fargo, she’s so amazing at comedy, but she also can navigate the dark waters that Fargo explores every season. She was someone that was a pretty easy go-to when we started talking about it.”

Fargo season five, which is set in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019, follows Dorothy “Dot” Lyon (Temple), a “typical Midwestern housewife” who is “plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind,” the plot description reads. The cast also includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lamorne Morris, Joe Keery, Richa Moorjani, and Jon Hamm, who will crush the Fargo accent.

Fargo returns to FX and FX on Hulu on November 21st.

Matty Healy Seemingly Tweeted An Awful, Insensitive Joke About Boygenius, And Lucy Dacus Had The Perfect Response

Sometimes, Matty Healy is protesting anti-LGBTQ+ laws with on-stage kisses. Other times, he’s saying eyebrow-raising things that draw ire. The latest Healy news is in the latter category.

There was an X (formerly Twitter) account named @Mattyfrnglomg that seemed to belong to The 1975’s singer: According to fans on Reddit, Healy has shared tweets from the X account on his verified Instagram account, leading some to believe the X account was a genuine Healy endeavor. The account recently tweeted, “I told Lucy Dacus that ‘Boygenius’ had inspired me and George to start a new band called ‘Girlr*tard’. I don’t really hear from her that often.”

Boygenius member Lucy Dacus didn’t seem to care for that, as she shared the tweet and added, “you don’t hear from me at all.” At some point after Dacus shared the tweet, the @Mattyfrnglomg account was deleted; Trying to access it now yields the message, “This account doesn’t exist.”

Back in July, Healy addressed some past controversies, saying on stage, “I was always, like, trying stuff. And some stuff I got right and some stuff I got wrong. But do you know what? There’s a lot of things I’ve said, jokes that I’ve made, you know what, there’s probably a couple of f*cking songs I’d take back if I had the chance. What I mean is that I really am only doing this because I want to make you guys laugh and feel good. That’s what my favorite art does, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I get a bit excited. And, you know what, I’m f*cking proud of myself.”

What To Watch: Our Picks For The TV Shows And Movies We Think You Should Stream This Week

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish shows available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

20. Adventure Time: Fiona and Cake (Max)

ADVENTURE
MAX

Fionna and Cake were introduced in a season three episode of the wonderful animated series Adventure Time, and became instant fan favorites. Now, the pair have their own spinoff show, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, which finds them on a multiverse-hopping journey towards self-discovery. It looks just as funny, existential, and clever as the original, just with a cat (Cake) instead of a dog (Jake). Whether that’s an improvement is up to you.

19. The Changeling (Apple TV Plus)

CHANGELING
APPLE

LaKeith Stanfield heads into the horror realm in this adaptation of Victor LaValle’s acclaimed novel. The show promises to be a grown-up fairytale begins in a New York City library and heads into a version of the Big Apple that usually remains closed from human eyes. It’s also a parenthood fable, and yes, it truly feels like the scariest horror stories often revolve around kids, whether they happen to be good or evil. Given Stanfield’s ability to showcase the surreal in various other projects, one can bet that this quality adds to the spooks in this series.

18. Solar Opposites (Hulu)

hulu solar
hulu

Solar Opposites is, in a sense, two shows for the price of one. What a deal! One show is the alien adventures of Korvo (now voiced by Dan Stevens), Terry, Jesse, Yumyulack, and the Pupa, the cutest lil’ guy on television. The other show takes place in The Wall, where humans have been shrunk down and held hostage inside a terrarium. Both are very funny, very weird, and very good. Solar Opposites doesn’t get as much attention as Rick and Morty, but it should.

17. Star Wars: Ahsoka (Disney Plus)

STAR
DISNEY

Rosario Dawson is back as Ahsoka in this spinoff of The Mandalorian, with all the face paint and prosthetics to go along with it. The biggest question here, though, is whether everyone’s favorite little green guy will show up at some point to steal a few scenes and hearts. Fingers crossed.

16. Predators (Netflix)

PREDATORS
NETFLIX

It’s so easy to feel safe and secure with our place in the food chain (at least until AI turns our microwaves against us), but the reality is we wouldn’t fare very well out in the wilderness, shuffling around with true predators who use teeth, claws, brutal strength, and their understanding of the elements to wage daily wars on their rivals and competing species. The Tom Hardy-narrated Netflix docuseries, Predators, amplifies that truth with humbling clarity, spanning the globe to show stunning and startling footage of predators in their habitat and at their most territorial and fierce. It’s beautiful, it’s terrifying, it’s nature.

15. Invasion (Apple TV Plus)

APPLE

This intense story, set over several continents, brings us crop circles galore and civilization’s collapse while humanity struggles to pull it together during (as the title suggests) an alien invasion. Naturally, there is a sheriff who gets pulled back from the verge of retirement as soldiers, mission controllers, and civilians everywhere lend their perspectives in this series from Simon Kinberg (several X-Men movies) and David Weil (Citadel, Hunters). The show is back for a second season while the world still struggles to figure what, exactly, is happening in real-time.

14. Welcome to Wrexham (Hulu)

wrex
FX

FX’s sweet, celebrity-glazed sports docuseries about the historic soccer (sorry football) club that could is back and making a case for why it could be the comfort-binge of the Fall. All of the ingredients that made its first installment so damn charming are still there: a hopeful Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are still fretting over their investment in a slightly-less-doomed Wrexham FC, the club’s manager is still tossing out F-bombs a mile a minute, the humble, dedicated township are cautiously optimistic about their side’s brightening future, and a player named Paul Mullin is scoring more goals than once believed humanly possible. But when you add in royal visits and heartbreaking rejections, million-pound renovations, and unbelievable overtime comebacks it raises the stakes yet again, making us and the fans believe that anything — even a coveted promotion in the English League — is possible. Ted Lasso, eat your heart out.

13. Heartstopper (Netflix)

HEART
NETFLIX

Heartstopper is really just a lovely little show. The first season introduced us all to Charlie and Nick, two teenage boys who became friends and then discovered that friendship might actually be… something… more than friendship. Season two takes things even further. It’s funny and sweet and charming and gay as all hell, which is… yeah, really just lovely.

12. Archer (Hulu)

ARCHER
FX

The world has been trying to leave Sterling Archer behind for years and years with hilarious results as the spy and his associates have navigated land, sea, and air (and space), often stumbling into calamity while chasing adventure. But now, in its 14th season, the series, with all its ambition and wit, has reached its climax (yes, we are still doing phrasing) and we are here for it, specifically, the final bows of one of the greatest voice casts ever assembled. How will it all end? We can’t wait to find out, but regardless, Archer’s place as one of the best comedies of this century is assured.

11. Harley Quinn (Max)

harley quinn
max

Even though there’s been a lot of upheaval at HBO Max/Max and even more so for films and TV shows starring DC characters, at least one supervillainess is safe. Miss Harley (who does not need the Joker for success) was almost pointedly renewed as a clattering of show cancellations and removals swirled. Heck, Kaley Cuoco’s voice even gave us the only Valentine’s Day special worth watching this year. Soon, we might find out whether Bane is still making love to a skyscraper as Harley attempts to get in good with the Bat Family. Quite a contrast there.

10. Love at First Sight (Netflix)

LOVW
NETFLIX

The official description of this movie reads as follows: “Two strangers connect on a flight to London, only to be separated by a twist of fate. A reunion seems improbable — but love has a way of defying the odds.” Is this the most original story ever committed to film? Well, no. Should this movie have been titled Love at First Flight? Probably. But could you do a love worst than a sweet little meet-cute starring Haley Lu Richardson from The White Lotus? Definitely. Lots to consider here.

9. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (AMC Plus)

Daryl Dixon The Walking Dead Spinoff
Emmanuel Guimier/AMC

The only “solo” spinoff of AMC’s post-apocalyptic world is upon us. Daryl is most entertaining character to send to France, and he’s also the least religious of the bunch, which makes it awfully funny to see him hanging with a bunch of nuns after waking up in France like “WTF?” Most of all, though, Daryl earns his “Big Ass Kicker” nickname and we also get a lovely character study of the most loyal and industrious survivor of Rick’s old bunch. The action also delivers, so get ready for crossbows and total chaos at Parisian landmarks. Pssst, we also chose the most essential to watch before this spinoff.

8. American Horror Story: Delicate (Hulu)

AHS
FX

Ryan Murphy’s sick, twisted horror anthology has been a bit of a mixed bag over the years but if there’s anything that can unite the binge-watching masses this Fall it’s Kim Kardashian – first-time actor, lifelong lover of the arts. Kris Jenner’s prodigy is playing a supporting role in this season’s storyline, which can be best summed up as the millennial version of Rosemary’s Baby, while Emma Roberts plays an actress who becomes pregnant and begins to fear that someone (or something) is after her. Demonic symbolism, “hysterical” women, and off-putting wigs – everything you’d expect from a Murphy fright night production is here, it’s just all that much more surreal with Kardashian in the mix.

7. The Continental (Peacock)

John Wick The Continental Winston Scott Colin Woodell
Peacock

Sadly, this three-part series will not feature a Keanu Reeves cameo as suggested years ago. This story takes place in the 1970s, long before Wick’s most pivotal pup was even born. As such, this spinoff will focus on the earlier days of the franchise’s assassin-welcoming hotel, where Colin Woodell portrays Winston, who’s attempting to do his day job and also navigate the hellish underbelly of the era’s New York City. If you’re not into the Mel Gibson aspect of this prequel, then perhaps Katie McGrath can sway you to watch as The Adjudicator.

6. One Piece (Netflix)

NETFLIX

What we have here is a live-action adaptation of a legendary Japanese manga series about a young pirate and his friends out on the open seas in search of some treasure. It’s been burning up the Netflix charts since its release, and it’s been touted as a feel-good celebration of the innocence of childhood adventure, which, all things considered, does not sound like the worst way to spend a weekend binge. Get in there now before the second season drops.

Dan Harmon’s long-gestating cartoon take on Ancient Greece is here. He’s had big success in the world of animation before with both Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty, so there’s reason for optimism even if the reviews of the first few episodes are a little dicey. The horniest kids in Britain are back and ready to go out with a bang – a lot of banging, actually. The fourth season of this Netflix comedy is set to be its last, but before the goodbyes Otis, Eric, Maeve, Aimee, and the rest of the students from Moordale have some growing up to do. While Maeva studies under an eccentric author in America (hello Dan Levy), Otis and Eric struggle to climb the social hierarchy of their new school – one that’s so progressive, they’ve already filled his position of “student sex therapist.”

2. The Morning Show (Apple TV Plus)

APPLE

Is The Morning Show the best drama on TV in a world absent Better Call Saul and Succession? It might be in the running, but it’s definitely the dramaest drama on TV, leaning on its star power to cut through moments that might be eye-roll-inducing if you weren’t so captivated by the screen presence of Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, and Jon Hamm, who joins this season as a handsome version of Elon Musk. Backstabbing, front-stabbing, walk and talks, politics, high tension, and ripped-from-the-headlines storylines all come together, yet again, with our news and media power players moving more fully toward the game of mergers, acquisitions, and boardroom battles where the real prizes can be found.

The 2002 Britney Spears Movie ‘Crossroads’ (Which Has A Much Wilder Cast Than You Remember) Is Heading Back To Theaters

Long before Shonda Rhimes was out here creating her own empire with Grey’s Anatomy and its adjacent properties, she penned a movie for a world-renowned pop star back before Shondaland was even on the map. Crossroads was Britney Spears‘ first (and only) starring role, and it became a teen road trip with the most random cast and musical numbers to ever exist.

The movie starred Spears as Lucy, a small-town girl, and her best friends, played by Taryn Manning and then-unknown Zoe Saldana who go on a road trip right before graduating from high school. They laugh, they cry, and they hang out with a suspected murderer. It’s all about the journey, right? Well, if you didn’t get a chance to check it out in theaters over 20 years ago, now is the time! This way, you’ll be able to really appreciate the stacked cast, which also includes Justin Long as a love interest(!), as well as Kim Cattrall (!), and Dan Aykroyd (!) as Britney’s parents (?!?!). It also sounds like a great Sex and the City episode concept.

Crossroads will get a limited release this October in order to tie in with Spears’ upcoming memoir The Woman In Me. The movie will be shown at 875 locations across the country and will include a bonus sing-along of two Spears songs for your own little movie theater concert. Those are huge these days! The movie will hit theaters on October 23rd and 25th… so you can do an Eras Tour/Crossroads event if you choose to do so.

Flyana Boss Introduces Their ‘Nu Nu’ Selves In A Rowdy ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance

Flyana Boss returns to UPROXX Sessions for the second week in a row to rock a rollicking performance of their song “Nu Nu.” While “You Wish” is still their calling card, the Dallas and Detroit-bred dynamic duo is back to prove they are far from a one-hit wonder.

“Nu Nu,” funnily enough, actually precedes “You Wish” by a couple of months. It was released as part of a two-song single called Boffum alongside “Really Really.” It features a hard-hitting hit beat and confident, cutthroat lyrics that find Folayan and Bobbi boasting that they’re leveling up — another clever bit of manifestation from the crew that promised they’d be swimming in brand deals and found themselves sprinting through the offices of Google, TikTok, and Atlantic Records while recording jingles for Pizza Hut.

Watch Flyana Boss perform “Nu Nu” above.

UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.

Flyana Boss is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
