We Blind Tested Fast Food Chocolate Milkshakes — Here’s The Undisputed Champ

We’re arriving at that time of year when we’re hit with one of the hardest eating dilemmas fast food fans ever face. Picture it — the sun is shining, the grass is green, life is good… and you may find yourself in another part of the world, and you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile, and you may find yourself in a beautiful drive-thru, with a beautiful domestic partner, and you may ask yourself — “do I get a chocolate shake with my meal?”

Yes, as temperatures heat up nationwide, we’re finally in a season where we can order chocolate milkshakes from our favorite fast food restaurants and not look like total psychos for slow-sipping frozen desserts while bundled up in puffer jackets. The living is easy, as the poet once said. But with so many great fast food milkshakes out there, where is your money (and caloric intake) best spent?

We set to find out by putting our favorite chocolate milkshakes to the blind taste test to see what mix truly delivers the goods. Let’s dive in!

Methodology:

To focus on the best of the best, we choose the top four milkshakes from our Chocolate Milkshake Ranking from last year and one newcomer to the scene. Last year, we named — in descending order — Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and Five Guys as the four best chocolate milkshakes in all of fast food. Now we’re testing those four against America’s fastest-growing chicken chain, Dave’s Hot Chicken, to see if our ranking still holds.

Because we’re dealing with a cold product that will melt, I knew this taste test was going to be a tough one. Luckily, I was able to scoop up all five milkshakes in about 25 minutes, which was enough time for all of them to keep their consistency while tucked in a cooler. I didn’t have time to make it back home, though — so my girlfriend and I parked in a nearby parking lot, I donned my tasting blindfold, and she handed me each shake, then helped me record my impressions into my phone.

Because all of the brands serve their milkshakes in distinctively different cups, I made sure that she held the milkshake as I sipped, so I wouldn’t end up trying to guess where each milkshake was from. Need I remind you that I am a sophisticated professional, just sipping shakes blindfolded beside a K-Mart? Anyway, I took pictures of each milkshake after the tasting, so if they look a little brutal, that’s why.

Part 1: The Milkshake Tasting

Taste 1:

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

The dominant flavor here is vanilla soft-serve ice cream. It feels like the chocolate notes take a real backseat here. It’s delicate and slightly floral with a weak milk chocolate flavor on the aftertaste.

The consistency is thick and luxurious, but since the chocolate tastes like an afterthought, I fear this one isn’t going to rank well.

Taste 2:

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

Much better than Taste 1, rich chocolate notes dominate this milkshake. The consistency is a bit looser and more watery than Taste 1, which makes it more drinkable. I think chocolate milkshakes are best experienced when they deliver bursts of flavors that you can savor, and while I think the consistency really hurts the overall experience here, I can’t deny the deep chocolate flavor.

Taste 3:

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

Very balanced, the chocolate flavors are well represented here with hints of cocoa hovering over a thick and creamy ice cream base. I love the thick consistency here, it takes a significant amount of pressure to work the shake up the straw but the richness is worth all the extra effort.

Taste 4:

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

From my notes: “Wow — this one is significantly different than the Tastes 1-3.”

The chocolate flavor is complex, offering a balance of rich cocoa, earthy brown sugar notes, some nutty notes, and a malted milk flavor that makes each sip so rich and pleasant that I actually said “goddamn!” after the first few. This is the sort of milkshake you can really savor, and it has an addicting quality that draws you in.

I ended up with some significant brain freeze after this one because I wouldn’t stop sipping on it.

Taste 5:

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

The chocolate here is interesting, it hits your palate with an initial rich and heavy cocoa and fudge flavor, but the aftertaste is entirely dominated by a creamy vanilla base. That initial taste is good, but it leaves me wanting more chocolate. The consistency is great, it’s thick with the right amount of air in it that makes it easier to drink than the ultra-dense texture of Taste 3, but the vanilla finish feels like a weak close for something that ought to taste mostly like chocolate.

I’m really torn on this one, it’s definitely not a number one for me, but whether I want to put it at two or three is going to take some thinking.

Part 2: The Milkshake Ranking

5. Chick-fil-A — Chocolate Milkshake (Taste 1)

Chickfika
Dane Rivera

The Chick-fil-A milkshake’s consistency is on point — it’s thick, creamy, super rich, and luxurious while still being easily drinkable. I’m not sure how they do it! Unfortunately, because this milkshake tasted so little like chocolate, I can’t in good conscience rank this any higher than last place.

The whipped cream and cherry are a nice touch and add a creamy and bright and fruity component to the shake, but unfortunately, that’s not what this shake needs. What it needs is more chocolate!

The Bottom Line:

A great milkshake, but not chocolatey enough for chocolate lovers.

4. Dave’s Hot Chicken (Taste 2)

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

I like Dave’s Hot Chicken, I think the bare bones menu works in the restaurant’s favor and helps to ensure that everything they do, they do well. On its own, this is a delicious chocolate shake that you’d have to be insanely picky to complain about. But against the competition? It was the watery consistency that made this one rank this low.

It lacks the luxuriousness that every other milkshake we tasted has, if it wasn’t for its deep rich chocolate flavor it would’ve easily taken the last place spot for us.

The Bottom Line:

A great chocolate-forward flavor, but a thin and watery consistency when compared to the rest of our tasting class.

3. Five Guys — Chocolate Milkshake (Taste 5)

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

Five Guys took the top spot in our ranking of chocolate shakes last year and oh how the mighty have fallen. The chocolate flavor here is good, but unfortunately, this shake’s dominating flavor is the vanilla base the chocolate is mixed in — which made this come across as less chocolatey than our top two.

It’s entirely possible that this came down to the person who mixed my milkshake, but if Five Guys aren’t able to consistently deliver a great chocolate milkshake experience, they probably don’t deserve our number one spot. If you’re a Five Guys fan don’t take this too hard, a chocolate shake at Five Guys feels sort of like a waste when you can add things like bananas, strawberries, or bacon into the mix.

The Bottom Line:

There is no need to go simple at Five Guys. The chocolate milkshake is good, but throwing in more mix-ins (which are free by the way) is the smarter move than going pure chocolate.

2. In-N-Out Chocolate Milkshake (Taste 3)

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

In-N-Out’s Chocolate Milkshake was tough to rank. Because it’s not the most chocolatey, I thought about giving it the third-place spot and throughout this ranking, I’ve been hard on milkshakes that taste more like vanilla than chocolate. But while this milkshake isn’t intensely chocolatey, I wouldn’t say that it tastes like vanilla, per se. Instead, it tastes balanced and that’s a good thing.

The chocolatey notes are faint, but they’re present throughout the entire experience. Unlike what Chick-fil-A and Five Guys offer, the flavors here don’t come in waves, instead, it offers a consistent flavor that tracks undeniably as chocolate. It’s delicious and by far has the best consistency of the five.

The Bottom Line:

This milkshake isn’t the most chocolatey, but it has the thickest consistency and the most consistent flavor. The first sip tastes as good as the last — the chocolate here is mixed perfectly.

Find your nearest In-N-Out here.

1. Shake Shack — Malted Chocolate Milkshake (Taste 4)

Milkshakes
Dane Rivera

Shake Shack’s Malted Chocolate Milkshake is far and above the best, richest, sweetest, and most chocolatey milkshake you can find in fast food. You could argue the fact that this milkshake is malted (made with malted milk powder) makes it an unfair comparison against these unmalted milkshakes because that extra ingredient offered a savory, more flavorful experience, but I would counter that maybe all milkshakes should be malted.

The difference is undeniable, I don’t know that I tracked that this milkshake tasted obviously malted, I wasn’t even aware that my girlfriend ordered it “malted,” which is an option Shake Shack offers, but it was clear that this milkshake had something else going on that the others lacked.

The Bottom Line:

If you want the most decadent, savory milkshake your money can buy, make sure you go to Shake Shack and make sure you order that baby “malted.” It makes all the difference.

Hayley Williams Invited Noted Paramore Fan Lil Uzi Vert To Perform ‘Misery Business’ With The Band At Madison Square Garden

Paramore is fully committed to the “Misery Business” revival. The band performed their iconic song last October for the first time since September 2018, and Hayley Williams welcomed PinkPantheress to the Austin City Limits stage for another rendition of “Misery Business” shortly thereafter.

On Wednesday night, Paramore’s second go at Madison Square Garden was accentuated by a surprise appearance from Lil Uzi Vert for — you guessed it — another fresh take on “Misery Business.”

“[We’ve been] talking for a minute, but this is the first time we’ve met in person. I love you,” Williams told Uzi on stage before hugging them, as captured in a video by Robbie Fox and re-posted by Kyle Denis. “You’ve said too many nice things about me. You are so sweet to me and to Paramore, so can we do this bridge again together? And then we’re gonna melt their faces off. Alright? New York City, are you ready? Here we go!”

Variety shared a longer video of the performance:

As mentioned by Williams, Uzi has never hid their Paramore fandom. There is plenty of evidence, such as this YouTube video from January 2017 of Lil Uzi Vert blaring Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun” in the car.

In March 2020, Williams told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe why she’d turned down an opportunity to collaborate with Lil Uzi Vert. (Note: This was before Uzi changed their pronouns to they/them last July.)

“I remember, too, Uzi asking me to do some stuff with him, and I know that fans are going to be so pissed at me for saying this, but I literally wrote him back on Instagram and I was like, ‘Buddy, I love you so much, but I don’t want to be that famous,’” Williams said (as relayed by NME at the time).

Lil Uzi Vert didn’t give up hope, however. At last summer’s BET Awards, they told Complex that their dream collaboration was still “Hayley Williams from Paramore,” adding, “There’s no one better than Hayley Williams.”

Check out more footage and reactions from fans of Lil Uzi Vert’s full-circle moment with Williams and Paramore below.

Did John Wick Actually Die At The End Of ‘John Wick 4?’

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Like the Fast and Furious movies, the John Wick saga began with relative modesty. The Fast and the Furious, released in the summer of 2001, was about thieves who race hot rods. The original John Wick, from 2014, was about a hitman avenging his murdered puppy. Over its four films (and a forthcoming spinoff, and a forthcoming TV series), its world has greatly and often absurdly expanded further. It’s so big that John Wick may be coming back for a fifth film…despite him, y’know, eating it at the end of round four.

So did John Wick actually die at the end of Chapter 4?

The answer is: Yes, probably, maybe, although maybe not. It certainly seemed like he had at the time. In the climax, Keanu Reeves’ Wick duels Donnie Yen’s Caine, a blind assassin working for the film’s big bad, Bill Skarsgard’s Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont. Caine fatally wounds Wick…but before he croaks, he has enough energy to shoot the Marquis dead. Wick then collapses on the staircase and passes into the infinite. We soon see his grave, which is next to his late wife.

Of course, we didn’t see Wick’s corpse being embalmed and placed into that coffin, or see him being cremated, if that’s the way he wished to go. So like the Fast and Furious films, which keep bringing felled characters back from the dead, it appears we’ll see that John Wick guy again. After all, these movies make enough money to bring anyone back from the grave.

Report: Monty Williams Has Agreed To A 6-Year, $78.5 Million Deal To Coach The Pistons

After being fired by the Phoenix Suns following a second-round exit to the Denver Nuggets, Monty Williams did not find himself out of a job for long. The longtime NBA coach is headed to Detroit where he has landed the biggest contract in NBA history for a head coach, making north of $13 million per year — with the chance to make even more on incentives — to take the Pistons to the next level.

One would assume those incentives include some that are very hard to reach (like winning a championship), but even so it is a massive amount of money, topping Gregg Popovich’s deal in San Antonio. It’s clear the Pistons are willing to spend to land one of the top coaching candidates on the market despite being a team with ample questions coming into this offseason. Cade Cunningham’s return is the chief reason for excitement in Detroit, but after falling to the fifth pick in this year’s draft despite having the worst record in the league this past season, there are no guarantees they add a star to go alongside the former No. 1 pick.

With Williams coming on board, it certainly seems like Detroit will be active this summer on the trade and free agent market to upgrade their roster, as this is not the coaching hire you make if you’re trying to continue slowly building through young players.

Tove Lo Turns The Excitement Of A New Crush Into A Dance Party With Her Pulsating ‘I Like U’ Single

Last weekend, Tove Lo performed at the 2023 BottleRock Napa Valley festival, where she joined Duran Duran for “Give It All Up” on top of performing her own set. Now she’s riding that momentum by releasing the dreamy, synth-heavy “I Like U” on Wednesday, May 31.

The Swedish singer initially teased “I Like U” would drop on Thursday, June 1, but couldn’t wait any longer. “Summer is coming… and so is ‘I like u’!” she wrote on Instagram. “Because you deserve it, I’m giving it to you a day early [purple heart emoji] shout out to @timfromthehouse for making it the sweaty nostalgic dance tune it is!”

She continued, “Also, PRIDE is coming and I will be donating a portion of my streaming proceeds from #Ilikeu to the amazing @trevorproject, the leading suicide prevention org for lgbtq young people. Go to their page to get more information on the essential and life saving work they do, and if you’re in a position to donate please do so.”

“I Like U” perfectly captures the disorienting feeling that washes over someone at the onset of a crush, which is mirrored by the Moni Haworth-directed video.

“You say sorry I’m taken / Walk away with a smile / I know I’m not mistaken / You’re the love of my life,” Tove Lo sings to set the stage for the melodic, pulsating hook that will inevitably get stuck in every listener’s head: “La la like you I la la la like you.”

Tove Lo told NME that “I Like U” is “in the vein of the ’90s [and] Y2K-era dance music” and was inspired by “what was going through my head” when she first saw her now-husband. She also shared with the publication that the deluxe version of her October 2022 album Dirt Femme “is coming; it’s just [going to be] a little bit later.”

Channing Tatum Is Done With ‘Magic Mike,’ But He’d Return Decades Later For A Movie About ‘Septuagenarian Strippers’

Looks like the third Magic Mike had the words “last dance” in the title for a reason. The threequel came out earlier this year, and was, alas, neither as well-reviewed nor as money-gobbling as its two predecessors. But while there won’t be a fourth, its star is open to another stripper saga — in a few decades.

In an interview with People, Channing Tatum was blunt about the future — or lack thereof — of the Magic Mikes. “I am done. We did it all,” he declared. “We chewed all the meat off the bone on that one. There’s nothing left to do.”

But he joked (or not) he would do it if everyone was old as hell. “That would be the only thing I would come back for, Grumpy Old Strippers,” he said with a laugh. “Like Grumpy Old Men: Septuagenarian Strippers.”

Tatum turned 43 last month, so get ready, audiences of 2050: You might get to see an AARP-aged silver fox former Step Up guy doing for the elderly what The Full Monty did for regular-looking blokes.

It’s not clear if the underperformance of Magic Mike’s Last Dance had something to do with him bailing on the series, but surely the pain of having to get supernaturally ripped had something to do with it.

“It’s hard to look like that,” Tatum said on The Kelly Clarkson Show circa the film’s release. “Even if you do work out, to be that kind of in shape is not natural. That’s not even healthy. You have to starve yourself. I don’t think when you’re that lean, it’s actually healthy.”

Still, he can always do more movies about dogs.

CM Punk Will Return At AEW Collision In Chicago

Eight months after Brawl Out, CM Punk is officially returning to AEW when the promotion’s new Saturday show Collision airs live from Chicago on June 17.

Punk has been missing from action after suffering a torn tricep in his All Out victory over Jon Moxley last September. That win preceded a post-show press conference where Punk launched into a tirade against the EVPs of the show amid allegations he was responsible for sending former friend Colt Cabana to Ring of Honor. Punk and his longtime friend Ace Steel then allegedly brawled with the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega backstage.

Rumors have swirled around Punk’s possible return to the company, and those discussions heightened when AEW announced its decision to run a show at Wembley Stadium later this year. AEW tag team champions FTR told us earlier this year their dream match for the show would be to team with Punk against Omega and the Young Bucks.

For now, the heavily rumored return of Punk will reportedly coincide with somewhat of a brand split, with various names thrown out for his first feud including the likes of Chris Jericho, Samoa Joe, and others. With Wembley in the not-so-distant future, Punk’s return aligns with AEW loading the roster for what could be a defining summer for the promotion.

Melissa McCarthy describes Halle Bailey’s endearing habit on ‘The Little Mermaid’ set

Music can truly feel like magic sometimes, especially when someone has the voice of an angel—or perhaps a wistful, land-loving mermaid.

Reviews of Halle Bailey’s performance in Disney’s new live-action “The Little Mermaid” have been overwhelmingly positive, which isn’t too surprising considering her vocal talents. But according to co-start Melissa McCarthy, who plays the wicked sea witch Ursula in the film, Bailey’s siren-like appeal didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling.

In a press interview for the movie, McCarthy shared that Bailey had an endearing habit of quietly humming all the time, sometimes without even realizing that she was doing it. McCarthy’s description of the way she and even members of the sound crew reacted to Bailey’s constant lovely humming is a testament to the heartwarming, wholesome magic of music.

“Halle is, at all times, incredibly quietly humming. There is always this beautiful…it’s a different melody…it’s so quietly,” said McCarthy. She explained that the actors were mic’d so they could hear one another when they were far away from each other on set, and the mics were so powerful they could even hear if they whispered. And McCarthy would always hear her humming through her earpiece.

“There’s always music generating,” the actor said. “It’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”

McCarthy described how the sound guy with the boom mic would watch her with a look of tender awe. She asked him if he could hear her humming, and he whispered, “I can always hear it. It’s my favorite thing.”

Watch McCarthy describe the “divine” experience of hearing Halle Bailey’s natural musicality on set:

The way McCarthy describes it, it almost sounds as if Halle Bailey were a real-life Disney princess. Perhaps the magic is real after all…
