The Jazz Reportedly Rejected A Knicks Offer Of RJ Barrett And Two Firsts For Donovan Mitchell

The last big domino left to fall in the 2022 NBA offseason is Donovan Mitchell being trades, as the Utah Jazz look to fully enter a rebuild after sending Rudy Gobert to Minnesota for a massive haul of picks earlier this summer.

The Knicks have long been considered the frontrunners — and really the only team we’ve heard of with considerable interest in Mitchell — with many operating on the belief it’s a matter of when, not if, Mitchell is playing his home games at Madison Square Garden. However, on Tuesday, the Knicks announced a new four-year extension worth north of $100 million for RJ Barrett, which seemed to complicate matters and raised plenty of eyebrows around the league.

While Barrett’s extension changes the calculus given the poison pill provision, according to Shams Charania, it doesn’t preclude him from still being part of a trade package that nets Mitchell. The bigger problem is the Knicks not meeting the Jazz’s asking price in offers where Barrett is the focal point, with Charania bringing word that the Jazz rejected the latest offer from New York of Barrett and a pair of unprotected firsts for Mitchell.

Given that we’ve heard the Jazz are asking for a similar draft pick haul as what they got from the Wolves who sent five first rounders to Utah for Gobert, this certainly indicates that there’s still a wide gulf between what the Knicks are offering and the Jazz are requesting. With a month left until camp, there’s no reason for either party to budge much on their offer/demand, but we seem headed for a who blinks first scenario in terms of offering up a compromise position that’s somewhere between this reported offer and the full asking price.

Angsty Teen Donald Trump Goes To His Diary (Truth Social) To Ask A Simple Question: ‘Why Are People So Mean?’

Donald Trump took over the Republican Party by being, for lack of a better word, mean. He taunted his fellow GOP opponents. He gave people unflattering nicknames, usually with alliteration or rhymes (or both). He called Ted Cruz’s wife “ugly” and accused his dad of assassinating JFK. But as with any bully, it appears Trump can’t really take it when the tables are turned.

On Tuesday, the former president unleashed a torrent of posts (or “truths”) on Truth Social. It was a throw-everything-at-the-wall marathon. He shared memes of, shall we say, dubious accuracy. He spread lies about voter fraud. In one post, he suggested his supporters lay down their lives for him. Buried in the avalanche was one a moment of reflection.

“Why are people so mean?” Trump wrote. It’s not clear what he was specifically referring to. Perhaps all the people whose lives have he’s negatively impacted, who aren’t exactly unhappy that he’s not doing well? It’s also not clear if he was even remotely aware of his reputation, a thousand times earned, of being cruel and bitchy to anyone who isn’t serving his immediate interests. Perhaps we’re witnessing a deeply broken man entering a fugue state as his legal, financial, and possibly presidential prospects potentially go up in smoke.

At least he has somewhere to vent. He was kicked off his favorite social media shortly after helping inspire a violent attack on the Capitol, and it took him over a year to build a rinky-dink clone of it. But that, too, may be coming to an end. The service is reportedly up to its ears in debt, and it’s still isn’t available on Android thanks to all the violent threats that keep cropping up on there. Where will Trump go to blow off steam when Truth Social has gone the way of Trump Steaks and Trump’s board game?

No, That Wasn’t Beyoncé Cheering On Serena Williams At The US Open — It Was Laverne Cox

The US Open is always a big deal for tennis fans as the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, but this year, it’s extra special, as it is superstar Serena Williams’ final tournament before she retires at the age of 40. On Monday, she played her first match of the tournament against Danka Kovinić with a surfeit of celebrity supporters such as Anthony Anderson, Mike Tyson, Queen Latifah, and Spike Lee in attendance. One who was not, though, is Beyoncé… but that didn’t stop some commentators on television and Twitter from believing she was.

As it turned out, the reason for the confusion was actress Laverne Cox, who multiple broadcasts confused for the Renaissance singer. To be fair, Cox was — who actually previously worked with Beyoncé — wearing a mask and has been known to wear similarly-colored tresses to Queen Bey. That didn’t stop those who could tell the difference from correcting those who couldn’t in the most hilarious ways.

Although Beyoncé wasn’t in attendance in person, she was in spirit, as the US Open broadcast of the match opened with a tribute video to Serena featuring Beyoncé’s song “I Was Here.” Beyoncé also recently narrated a Gatorade ad detailing Williams’ accomplishments on and off the court. The singer previously contributed the song “Be Alive” to the biopic about Williams’ father, King Richard, performing the song from the Compton tennis courts where Williams got her start to open the 2022 Oscars.

Cox, meanwhile, enjoyed the attention, posting a compilation of the mistaken identity tweets on Instagram with the caption “not me getting mistaken for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight then trending on Twitter as the internet cackles over the mistaken identity. These tweets are funny as hell. Enjoy!!!”

Serena Williams plays her second match tomorrow (August 31) at 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT against Anett Kontaveit.

Things Are So Weird At Movie Theaters That 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Might Hit Number One (Again) On Labor Day Of 2022

Despite what Tom Cruise wants you to think, people aren’t really going to the movies that much this summer. Yes, Top Gun reinstated the love of going to a dark room with a bunch of strangers and sitting in seats that smell like melted butter, but the novelty of going back to theaters might have worn off for anyone looking to watch an original story.

Just last week, movie theaters across the country were basically desolate when the domestic box office grossed just $52.7 million, which is the lowest in months, according to ComScore. In order to create some momentum during the holiday weekend, movie theaters have been bringing back classics like Jaws and ET for the late-summer lull, and the next classic film is…..2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Marvel “classic” will be returning to theaters just eight months after it left, but it seems like a much-needed push for movie theaters. The movie, which already grossed $1.9 billion around the world, will return to over 3,000 theaters this weekend, with an extra 11 minutes of footage. Considering that last week’s number one box office hit, Sony’s The Invitation, barely crossed the $7 million mark, it’s likely that Peter Parker and Co will snag the top spot once more.

In case you didn’t know, National Cinema Day is this Saturday, September 3rd, and many North American cinemas will be offering drastic discounts for anyone who wants to spend their holiday weekend in a movie theater. Big chains like Regal and AMC are offering majorly discounted tickets in order to get those seats filled. Maybe the teens seeing Rise Of Gru were onto something after all.

DJ Quik Tells A Harrowing Story Of Performing Right After A Motorcycle Wreck

This week on People’s Party with Talib Kweli, Kweli and Jasmin Leigh play host to multiplatinum rapper, producer and Compton legend, DJ Quik. For those who don’t know, Quik is arguably one of the greatest and most impactful artists in the history of west coast rap — an architect of the sound that made the world pay attention to rappers from Compton and South Central LA. His catalog is extensive with cuts alongside some of the best to ever do it including Jay-Z, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Kurupt, Erick Sermon, and Kweli himself, among many others.

Industry-wide, Quik’s work ethic is well known and deeply respected and that’s underscored in the video above — where he tells Kweli a wild story about rocking a stage in a neck brace and bleeding from scrapes after a motorcycle accident. At the time, Quik was set to perform in a Back to School concert with De La Soul and Kweli. The night before the show, Quik’s close friend, rising Compton rapper Mausberg, was murdered. The next day found Quik grieving while working on a song that featured the slain rapper. He decided to take a break from the recording session to clear his head and find some joy.

He called up his friends and said he wanted them to meet up, so he could show them a motorcycle stunt he had been practicing. His friends pulled up and he went to do a stunt called “The Standing Dead Christ.” As he transitioned into doing the move a sudden gust of wind caused him to lose his balance. Quiks body and bike spilled onto the asphalt at high speed.

“I hit the ground so hard, I was knocked out,” he says. “And when I woke up I was still sliding. I drove myself to the hospital on the bike. Me and the bike were both leaking.”

Though the crowd was told Quik wouldn’t be at the show, Quik showed up anyway.

“I did not want to be in despair. I popped some ibuprofen and pulled up!”

Kweli described that particular performance as a classic set. Listen to DJ Quik talk about his life as one of hip-hop’s most celebrated producers on People’s Party with Talib Kweli on Luminary or watch the full episode below.

Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery Will Star In Marvel’s New ‘Wonder Man’ Series Because, Hey, Why Not?

Ben Kingsley is officially coming back for his third Marvel project. The iconic actor will reprise his role of Trevor Slattery, who first appeared in 2013’s Iron Man 3 before popping up again, seven years later, in 2020’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, this time around, Trevor will be making an appearance on the small screen in the upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+.

As for why Trevor and why now, the answer is simple: Acting! In the comics, Wonder Man is an actor, and in the MCU, so is Trevor, so it only tracks that they would cross paths as fellow thespians. The two also have a connection to Iron Man, which could play into a Trevor and Wonder Man team-up that nobody ever once predicted. Via Variety:

The show was first revealed to be in the works back in June. It will focus on the Marvel character Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man. In the comics, Williams is the son of a wealthy industrialist whose company falls on hard times due to competition from Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. Williams then accepts an offer from villain Baron Zemo that gives him ionic superpowers including super strength and durability. After fighting the Avengers several times, Wonder Man ultimately joined their ranks.

On the filmmaking side, Kingsley’s appearance also has a simple explanation: The Wonder Man series is being executive produced and created by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, who accomplished the Herculean task of untangling Trevor from The Mandarin mess created by Iron Man 3. It was a whole thing that we’d go cross-eyed trying to explain, so long story short, Trevor is just Trevor now and ready for super-powered friendship.

‘Rap Sh!t’: The Funny, Wholesome, Good, And Odd Sh!t From Season 1, Episode 7

(SPOILERS for this week’s Rap Sh!t episode will be found below.)

Shawna and Mia are taking Miami by storm. They figured out their aesthetic, their raps are crisp, and their production is top notch thanks to help from Lamont, Mia’s baby father. In episode seven of the inaugural season of Rap Sh!t, Shawna and Mia gear up for their biggest opportunity yet: a performance at a party at James Harden’s mansion. As they prepare for that performance, we get updates on Shawna and Maurice’s budding romance as well as Mia and Lamont rekindling their relationship.

Weekly episodes of Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t are filled with funny sh!t, wholesome sh!t, good sh!t, and odd sh!t — all in just 30-minutes. After each episode, we’ll recap each of the moments for you which you can check out below.

Wholesome Sh!t

Mia and Lamont: We’ve yet to hear what went wrong with Mia and Lamont initially, as they started the season at odds. However, with just one episode left in the season, the two are not only on better terms, but their romantic spark has returned. Episode seven concludes with a sex scene with Mia and Lamont, and at the end of it, Mia questions Lamont’s intentions. She asks if it has to do with her growing rap career, and while Lamont admits to it playing a role in things, he adds that he genuinely wants to make things work out for Mia and their daughter. This answer is met with a smile from Mia as they doze off for the night

Funny Sh!t

Mia and Lamont: Staying on the two who’ve rekindled their romance, one of the funny moments in the recent Rap Sh!t episode comes as Mia and Lamont get their daughter ready for school. As Mia sends her off, she warns Lamont not to feed her too much candy and junk food. “Don’t be having my baby eating all that candy and junk and sh*t,” she says. Lamont’s response is a quick and funny one, as he says, “Aye, it’s my baby too. I can give it to her if I want to.”

Good Sh!t

Shawna and Mia: The ladies have been working hard to move upward in their rap careers, and with two solid records under their belts, “Seduce & Scheme” and “Nann Badder,” their success is only growing by the minute. Shawna and Mia’s next task was killing a performance at James Harden’s party. They rehearsed “Seduce & Scheme” and “Nann Badder” to perform at the party, and when they took to the stage to perform the former track, Shawna and Mia absolutely bodied it. Onlookers in the crowd included Tobe Nwigwe and notable Miami agents, who were all impressed by the song and the performance. It was going well until…

Odd Sh!t

Shawna: During the second set of Shawna and Mia’s performance, Shawna decides that a freestyle would be better than a rendition of “Nann Badder.” Unbeknownst to her, there is a time limit on their set and by the time she finishes the freestyle, there’s not enough time to for her and Mia to perform “Nann Badder.” The freestyle was honestly an odd move from Shawna, especially when she and Mia rehearsed their set over and over again. Add in the fact that Shawna’s freestyle went against the duo’s style and aesthetic making for what resulted in an incohesive performance. It was also one that left Mia upset that she was pushed aside for Shawna to have her selfish moment in the spotlight.

HBO Max’s ‘Rap Sh!t’ airs on Thursdays at 9:00pm EST.

A 1991 clip shows how calmly Steve Irwin responds to getting bitten by a snake on TV

If you were conscious in the ’90s or early 2000s then you likely have a pretty good idea who Steve Irwin is. If not, then you’ve probably at the very least become familiar with his children, Bindi and Robert, who have carried on his legacy of educating the public about animals. But in 1991, Irwin was just on the cusp of becoming a household name, so getting bitten on the neck by a snake while filming his weekly segment probably wasn’t in the cards. But the snake must’ve been tired of being worn like a necklace and had other ideas.

Irwin was always known for his excitement around animal education but the normally animated Australian was oddly calm as the snake clamped down. Funnily enough, the little python decided to take a bite right after Irwin had finished telling the host that the snake wasn’t feeling threatened so he wouldn’t bite. Just as the words finished leaving his mouth the snake took his chance. You can see the realization sink into Irwin’s face just before he tells the crew in a calm tone, “You might have to cut it. He’s biting my neck.” He emphasizes, “I’m serious,” before instructing the cameraman to zoom in closer so he can get a better look to try to get the snake to release him. Thankfully the snake was nonvenomous and promptly let go of the late star’s neck.

Irwin surely was no stranger to animal bites at that point in his career, but I’m not sure there’s anything that prepares you for getting bitten on the neck while doing a television show.
