Romy And Sampha’s Distinctive Voices Meld On Their Vulnerable New Single ‘I’m On Your Team’

We haven’t had official new music from The xx in a few years, but the group’s members have stayed busy. That includes Romy pressing forward with a solo career, and she has a new song out today, October 23: She teamed up with Sampha, who previously opened for The xx on early tours back in the day, on the stirring new song “I’m On Your Team.”

Romy says of the single, “It’s a love song but lyrically, it’s honest and truthful. Like ‘we’ve had the magic and dreaminess but now we’ve been through things together, so here we are and I’m putting in the work.’” Sampha adds “I love the idea of being part of a team, that you have to show up for each other, and from there you can create an even deeper connection.’ The evolving nature of a relationship crystalizes somewhere between the chorus of ‘And I hope the way I feel tonight, is the way I feel for life’ and the closing ‘I’m on your team, but I can’t always coach you.’”

The xx, meanwhile, recently had a sort of pseudo-reunion, when Romy and Oliver Sim both featured on one of Jamie xx’s new solo songs, “Waited All Night.”

Daniel Garcia Is Determined To Become Undeniable In AEW

49025636_PRESS---Daniel-Garcia-VS-The-Butcher_2024_06_29_AEW_Collision_001 copy
AEW

Daniel Garcia is quick to point out he’s not a fresh talent in AEW. He’s been in and out of prominent stories across his first three years in the company alongside some of the promotion’s biggest names, from Bryan Danielson to FTR and Chris Jericho. As new stars, like Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay, and Jay White have rotated into the company, it’s only become more difficult to separate from the pack and take the next step in becoming a true main event talent. At this stage in his career, Garcia is determined on becoming so utterly undeniable that it won’t matter who else is on the roster — there simply won’t be a question of whether he belongs in the the main event scene.

“We have such a roster where it fosters wanting to get better,” Garcia tells Uproxx Sports. “We have so many talented people coming all the time and I think it’s really on the talent to separate yourself and to show ‘You can sign whoever you want to sign, but I’m somebody unique. I’m somebody special, and I’m somebody that should be invested in as well.’”

That last part isn’t in question. Garcia’s put in the work to become a highly-touted talent, recently renewing his contract with AEW after agonizing over his decision for “basically a year.” In recent months, right up until he put pen to paper, rumors swirled with varying degrees of confidence where Garcia would end up.

“A lot of that stuff just made me laugh because I feel like I’m a super private person,” Garcia continues. “Nobody really had any information regarding anything involving me over the past few months. Anything that came out was just completely fabricated and I feel like anything that came out about my status was just completely fake because nobody knew anything about me.”

Ultimately, Garcia knew AEW was home and where he wanted to plant his flag.

“I kinda knew in my head most of the time — I figured AEW was the right place for me. It’s a place that I slot in really well at, it’s a place I’m happy, a place that I get a lot of opportunity already,” Garcia says. “I think AEW right now is just a place that I really believe in. You look around the locker room, there are people that I want to go to war with. We have a roster that motivates me to get better, to be a better wrestler, and a better performer.”

Developing a strong reputation, Garcia says, has taken him a long way. At times, it doesn’t matter as much about your in-ring abilities, rather if you can be someone that people want to work with. For Garcia, it’s exponentially easier to continue climbing the ladder when the locker room is in a strong position — something he admits wasn’t necessarily the case a few years ago.

“AEW’s obviously been through ups and downs over the past couple years of. Like you hear the rumors about the locker room and a lot of them are true. Like a lot of the times the locker room is going through trouble and turmoil and people are mad at each other,” Garcia says. “But, for the past year or so, I would say that we’ve been going through a really good upswing of positivity and everyone’s helping each other and it’s just a really good environment to be a part of.”

Support from a locker room dynamic can trickle into onscreen partnerships, and Garcia has been blessed to be paired with some of AEW’s veterans throughout his career. He says Jericho taught him not to be afraid to fail and to be comfortable trying new things. FTR taught him about the inner workings of professional wrestling from a locker room standpoint. Those lessons, he says, will stay with him forever. But as grateful as he is, there comes a time when he has to chart his own path.

“You have to find what works for you and you have to take the training wheels off and just, ride the bike for yourself,” Garcia says. “I feel like that’s what I’m doing right now. I feel like I’m somebody who, the training wheels just came off, I’m not paired up with any veteran, I’m doing it on my own, I feel like I’m really excited to see if I’m gonna keep riding the bike or if I’m gonna fall off.”

The journey here has come with ups and downs. Garcia says it’s been a roller coaster, where one month he’s on top of the world and it’s always a fight for his spot. He’s constantly looking for ways to stand out, to be unique, and to do things that haven’t been done before.

The most challenging part, he says, has been maintaining confidence and keeping the belief in himself.

“You just have to realize that in the downs, you have to believe in yourself just as much as you can in the ups,” Garcia says.

It’s that mindset that makes it easy to block out the noise. We’re in a day where most former pro wrestlers have a platform — whether it’s a podcast, a media network, or simply using their social presence to cause a stir. Garcia says he doesn’t want to name names specifically, but hopes one day to be creatively fulfilled and successful enough to not feel the need to go on a podcast every weekend and bad talk people who are trying to take the business further.

“I do think that there is a lot of positive influences in the wrestling world when it comes to wrestling media. I think Busted Open is a net positive for wrestling,” Garcis says.

“But then there’s other podcasts with people who are clearly just looking for clicks. Hating on AEW is a very popular thing and it gets people a lot of attention. And I feel like a lot of these things come from people who retired their jerseys. We never hung it in the rafters and we don’t even remember what their number was on their jerseys. A lot of those people are trying to get a new career off hating on AEW and hating on people who are trying to be successful. And it’s just, it’s sad to see, I hope I never have to go through that when I’m older.”

Instead, Garcia is giving energy to the upward trajectory in his career alongside Private Party. The tag team has been in AEW since the beginning and Garcia is a three-year veteran of the promotion, yet the trio feel fresh in their elevated roles. Since breaking out on his own, Garcia has been in programs with guys like MJF, and most recently Jack Perry. Private Party were unsuccessful against the Young Bucks in their tag team championship match at WrestleDream, but all three have retained positive momentum as a group that Tony Khan can build around.

“I think that just goes to show how hard it can be to break out at AEW because of the talent that we have on the roster,” Garcia says.

For Garcia and Private Party, the next step in continuing to progress their careers comes in Wednesday night’s tilt with the Bucks and Perry, where the trio will yet again have an opportunity to add to their impressive catalog of matches.

“Having a very impressive catalog of matches is something that I really take pride in,” Garcia says. “And I feel like every time I’m going to these matches, I’m just excited to keep adding to that catalog, keep adding to that resume of hopefully great professional wrestling matches.”

That perspective has been one Garcia has carried throughout his career, pointing back to his admiration of Danielson’s laundry list of in-ring classics, which he hopes to accomplish the same.

Having great matches is one thing. Having classics in prominent spots is another, and that’s top of mind as Garcia approaches this next phase in his career.

“I think the biggest thing for me in this next year is that I really wanna main event pay-per-views,” Garcia says. “I wanna prove that I can be a top guy. I feel like that’s what I’m ready for. I feel like that’s what I’ve been ready for. And that was my reason for staying at AEW. I wanna prove that I can be somebody that the company can build around, and I can be a top guy in this promotion.”

We’re Picking Winners For Week 8 Of The 2024 NFL Season

minshew top
Getty Image

Alright, maybe the best way to approach this season is to simply fade the picks in this space? As always, it’s up to the reader.

At any rate, Week 7 was another mess for us and, quite honestly, it unfolded in on-brand fashion. There were punt return touchdowns, kick return touchdowns, untimely turnovers, and even bizarre roster decisions. The Browns inexplicably demoted Jameis Winston to their emergency quarterback before Week 7 and then Deshaun Watson got hurt and Winston couldn’t come in until Dorian Thompson-Robinson got hurt, which led to a one-point spread loss that could’ve broken differently. The Packers won by 2 while laying 2.5. The list goes on.

God bless Mike Tomlin as a home underdog, if nothing else.

Five more picks on the way, but first, a look at the carnage.

  • Week 7: 1-4
  • 2024 Season: 11-23-1

Come get these winners.

Los Angeles Rams (+3) over Minnesota Vikings – Widely Available

This is just a spot I have to take with the full 3 available in the market. The Rams are undervalued after a tough start, and Los Angeles is getting a little bit healthier with the projected return of Cooper Kupp. I also tend to favor home teams on the short week of Thursday night, and I’m probably a touch lower on Minnesota than the market is right now.

Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5) over Philadelphia Eagles – FanDuel/BetMGM

The Bengals are back to life after two straight wins, even as their offense floundered a bit. I’m generally a believer in Cincinnati to right the ship, and if they can pair this defensive uptick with a return to their early-season offensive form, there is a lot to like. I’m grabbing the 2.5 while it’s available and projecting this to close 3 in many places. Lay it.

Cleveland Browns (+9.5) over Baltimore Ravens – FanDuel

It gives me no pleasure to back the Browns again this week. However, I was impressed with Cleveland’s defense against Cincinnati, and Jameis Winston is a meaningful upgrade on either 2024 Deshaun Watson or Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Give me the candy.

Miami Dolphins (-3) over Arizona Cardinals – DraftKings/ESPNBet

With Tua back in the fold, I think this number should be bigger than 3. Of course there is uncertainty about how he’ll perform but, when Tua has been on the field, the gap between him and the backup quarterback brigade for the Dolphins has been sizable. This is also a small fade of Arizona after two wins in the last three weeks.

Las Vegas Raiders (+10) over Kansas City Chiefs – Widely Available

I don’t want to talk about it, but I simply must take the double-digit number on Las Vegas at home. The total is currently sitting at 41. The Chiefs haven’t exactly been explosive offensively. Kansas City should win, but we maintain our principles.

Everything New On Netflix In November 2024 Including ‘Emilia Pérez’ With More ‘Cobra Kai’ And ‘Outer Banks’

emilia-perez-lg
Netflix

Netflix knows that November is the beginning of cozy season (it is official and everything), so spooky pumpkins are on the back burner with prestige film offerings starting to take center stage. That category includes Emilia Pérez starring Selena Gomez, who already conquered streaming with her ongoing Hulu series. Additionally, comfort food is important and plentiful in the form of returning series like Cobra Kai and Outer Banks. That’s not all, though. A Colman Domingo-starring series, The Madness, will debut later in the month with the Ella Purnell-starring Arcane returning to please the gaming audience.

Here’s everything coming to Netflix in November:

Emilia Pérez (Netflix film 11/13)

Selena Gomez has been tipped for the most lofty awards in this musical drama from auteur Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone, Paris, 13th District) about a cartel leader who fakes their own death and emerges as a woman, Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofia Gascón). Gomez portrays Emilia’s wife, Jessi, and the singer-turned-actress has been quick to brush away awards talk due to not wanting to “be presumptuous” and “I’m just going to say I’m so happy people are receiving it the way they are.” Enough said (for now).

Cobra Kai: Season 6 Part 2 (Netflix series 11/15)

This streaming service sure does love its split seasons lately, but this supersized season punctuates in the right places. Miyagi-do and Kreese’s newest version of Cobra Kai will face off at the Sekai Taikai worldwide tournament, and hilariously, they suddenly have other incredible dojos to fight because karate still exists outside of the Valley. Will Miguel, Robby, and Samantha be able to defeat the entire globe on their own while Daniel and Johnny are inevitably at each other’s throats? Adults are such a bummer, man, and old rivalries somehow never die, much like Cobra Kai.

Outer Banks: Season 4 Part 2 (Netflix series 11/7)

The Pogues won’t stop with the treasure hunting, and they remain back-in-time after attempting a “normal” existence in the OBX. This, of course, isn’t successful and the hunt for Blackbeard’s Treasure proved to be too tempting with new foes now ratcheting up the pressure with some The Walking Dead flavor to boot. Don’t worry, a Zombie John B. is not going to happen, but perhaps if a Season 5 renewal is announced, that curiosity could be satisfied. Sure, this is not that kind of show, but never say never.

Southwest Airlines Has Announced Big Changes — Here Is What To Expect

Southwest Airlines
MERLE COOPER/UPROXX

The best thing about taking a flight with Southwest Airlines? Open seating. The worst thing about taking a flight with Southwest Airlines? Open seating. Also, the unruly passengers that continue to plague the flying experience.

However, this heated discussion about whether or not one of the biggest airlines in North America should continue to offer open seating is no longer up for discussion and is going away, due to the company’s newest transformational plan. Southwest Airlines’ new “Southwest. Even Better.” three-year plan will build upon its original business model but provide more choices and greater comfort for customers. The airline’s new plan follows ongoing efforts from the airline industry to improve the (much degraded) passenger experience, as seen by United Airlines and American Airlines.

Beginning in the second half of 2025 and going full operational in 2026, Southwest Airlines will boost demand with an assigned seating model, citing that 86% of passengers want assigned seats, especially on long-haul flights. Additionally, Southwest will offer extra legroom options with up to five additional inches of pitch for one third of its seats.

On the global scale, Southwest Airlines will officially partner with Icelandair through Baltimore-Washington International Airport, offer vacation packages through its new “Getaways by Southwest” vacation bundles, and update its tier benefits for credit card holders.

With all of these changes, Southwest Airlines will keep its “bags fly free” policy, allowing two free checked bags per passenger.

New Music Tuesdays Could Be Back, Thanks To Tyler, The Creator And Earthgang

TYLER_EARTHGANG(1024x450)
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

It’s been about six years since my colleague Steven Hyden wrote about how putting out new music on Fridays is a functionally bad idea, and it looks like change may finally be on the horizon. Next Monday, October 28, Tyler The Creator is set to release his eighth (or seventh, depending on what you count) album, Chromakopia. The next day, Earthgang looks to release their fifth album, Perfect Fantasy. It may have taken a bit, but it looks like New Music Tuesday might be back.

Here’s where we remind some of our younger readers that, once upon a time, new albums and singles used to come out on Tuesdays. We didn’t really think enough about it at the time to appreciate it, but it was glorious. You could buy the latest releases after school on Tuesday and spend the rest of the week actually listening to it, determining your weekend playlist between classes and on the way to and from school. You actually had time to share and discuss new music with friends and fellow listeners, to absorb and digest the new tunes throughout the week without distractions from other new media like movies and weekend activities that make it hard to just sit and take it all in.

Now, though, music and movies all come out on the same day. This means making choices. You miss out on something, and with so many new albums all coming out on Friday (Thursday night on the West Coast), there are too many projects clamoring for space on your playlist. By the weekend, well, you have plans. You might get to sit and absorb one or two of the latest releases, but then Monday comes, and it feels like a hard reset. Sure, you can still listen to all the new stuff through the week, but by now, you’ve probably forgotten about them all in the rush, save for the one or two highest profile releases from the biggest artists. Mid-level artists and indies get pushed to the side. It’s a bad scene for almost everybody involved.

Audiomack co-founder Brian Zisook (aka DJ Z) has been making the argument on social media for years that releasing earlier in the week drives more engagement. In August, he wrote, “Spoke with execs from four record labels this week, and none believe releasing new music on Fridays makes sense anymore. They’d gladly switch back to Tuesdays—better for artists, fans, and DSP partners alike.” Since Tyler announced Chromakopia would release on Monday, Zisook has beat the drum more steadily, noting, “Releasing music at midnight on Friday is incompatible with consumer behavior… Releasing earlier in the week, preferably during daytime hours, allows for greater engagement and conversation while people are in the same weekday routine!”

While many indie artists have followed this advice (to their benefit), this is the first time in a long time mainstream artists have moved a heavily anticipated release to earlier in the week. This gives us our first chance to test this oddly counterintuitive logic in the real world — especially since streaming became the de facto default consumption method for new music. Having two artists dropping earlier in the week signifies a shift in thinking. Should they see the kind of results Z and Hyden have been promoting for the past few years, you can bet the industry will take note. The next artist makes a trend; after that, the floodgates will hopefully open, allowing for an industry-wide change that will only benefit artists and their partners.

Dave Chappelle And Killer Mike Are Going On Tour Together For A Quick Run Of Shows Coming Soon

Dave Chappelle 2024 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony

Dave Chappelle has long maintained an active connection to the music world, ever since he made musical guests a highlight of Chappelle’s Show. Now he’s preparing to make the center of the Chappelle/music Venn diagram even larger: Today (October 23), he and Killer Mike announced Still Talkin That Sh*t!, a joint tour.

A press release describes the show as “featuring a fusion of music and comedy across a joint set.” Currently, seven shows are scheduled, in Detroit; Atlanta; Rosemont, Illinois; Boston; New York; Oakland; and Long Beach. Tickets will be on sale starting October 25 at noon local time via Ticketmaster.

This comes after Mike teamed up with Chappelle (and Young Thug) in 2022 on the single “Run.” In an interview, he said of the comedian, “I went to one of his shows, and afterward all the comedians were hanging out. Everyone was telling funny stories, and the next thing you know, Dave is like, ‘Mike, you need to run for governor.’ I was like, ‘We got somebody running for governor already,’ and he just gives me this monologue backstage. […] I laughed like sh*t and I called him after we had done this record. I was like, ‘Yo, would you mind repeating that same speech you gave me?’ […] He sent it back to me, and it was as good as the night he cussed my ass out and told me to run for governor.”

Find the list of tour dates below.

Anthony Davis Laughed About How The Lakers Finally Won A LeBron Milestone Game For Bronny’s Debut

ad-top
Spectrum SportsNet

The Los Angeles Lakers picked up an opening night win on Tuesday in impressive fashion over the Minnesota Timberwolves, as they built a massive lead in the first half and held on to that for a 110-103 win to start their season. It was the first win for JJ Redick as a head coach and featured a dominant performance by Anthony Davis, who put up 36 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a spectacular showing against Rudy Gobert and the Wolves. And yet, the story of the night on a national scale was the first ever game featuring a father and son sharing the floor, as Bronny James made his NBA debut alongside LeBron in the second quarter.

It was a brief 3-minute stint for Bronny and it didn’t quite hit the movie script beats as, despite their best efforts, they couldn’t create a Bron to Bronny or Bronny to Bron bucket. Still, it was a historic moment and one that the James family won’t forget, and made even better by the fact the Lakers got the win, avoiding any questions over whether the Bronny and LeBron moment created a distraction. That win part was what Anthony Davis highlighted after the game with a laugh, because as he noted, the Lakers have tended to lose all of the big LeBron moment games in the past.

The most notable of those was the game he broke the career scoring record, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in what ended up a loss to the Thunder. They’ve also lost games where James has moved up various all-time lists, like passing Jason Kidd for fifth all-time in triple-doubles, which forces James to separate his feelings on a career milestone from the loss on the court. In this instance, he could simply enjoy the moment and a win together, which Davis was happy to contribute to, allowing his co-star to only answer positive questions after the game.

Former HS QB Prospect Paolo Banchero Believes Anthony Edwards Would ‘Rethink’ Playing In The NFL After Taking A Hit

paolo ant top

There are a lot of professional athletes that began their careers as multi-sport stars before eventually focusing their efforts on one. For many in the NBA and NFL, their high school years were spent playing both football and basketball before locking in on one as their recruitment got serious, but there’s still that wonder as to whether they could’ve made it to the highest level in the other sport.

Anthony Edwards is among those, and he recently insisted that he’d try to go play in the NFL if he won a ring in the next 3-4 years with the Timberwolves — which got a laugh from Vikings star Justin Jefferson. Given Ant’s bravado on the basketball court, it’s not a surprise he thinks he could make the transition to the NFL, but not every former football star in the NBA shares those same delusions of grandeur.

Paolo Banchero was once a state champion quarterback in Washington and had tools that made him an intriguing prospect at the college level, before (wisely) focusing on basketball. In a clip from his upcoming season-long video diary with Andscape, Banchero was asked about Ant’s comments and explained why he has no interest in chasing his old football dreams — while also noting he believes Ant would “rethink” his decision after the first hit he took in the NFL.

I appreciate Paolo having the general awareness to know that his football days are behind him and that the speed and physicality of the NFL game is just wildly different than anything he ever experienced, even playing football at a high level in high school. While Ant thinks he could be a Kam Chancellor type safety that delivers those hits, I think Banchero is probably right that the first time he had to stick his nose up by the line of scrimmage and had a 320 pound offensive lineman blocking him, he’d probably wonder why he left the hardwood — not to mention the first time he saw the difference in his game check.

There’s A Promising Update On Rina Sawayama’s ‘John Wick’ Spinoff Movie

rina
Lionsgate

There’s a strong case to be made that John Wick: Chapter 4 is the best John Wick movie, and not just because of the staircase scene.

The Keanu Reeves-starring film introduced three awesome additions to the Wick-verse: Donnie Yen as blind assassin Caine, a pre-Shogun Hiroyuki Sanada as Osaka Continental Hotel manager Koji, and musician/actress Rina Sawayama as his daughter, Akira. The post-credits scene set up a confrontation between Caine and Akira, who aims to get her revenge over the death of her father. Will we ever see what happens next?

Possibly! Last year, John Wick producer Erica Lee teased a spinoff starring Sawayama. “The character of Akira really pops in the movie, and I’d love to sort of see some further adventures with her character,” she told Screen Rant. “There’s a lot of characters in John Wick 4, and a lot of fan favorites from movies of the past. There’s definitely a lot of stuff we want to dig deeper into.”

The latest update on the potential spinoff (not to be confused with the other John Wick spinoff) comes from entertainment journalist Brandon Streussnig, who wrote on X, “Was just talking to one of the Wick producers (on the record so I’m not spilling any beans lol) and asked ‘so we’re definitely seeing the Donnie/Rina movie right?’” They replied, “Yes. Absolutely, yes.”

As for a follow-up to 2022’s excellent Hold The Girl, Sawayama said that she “can’t release another album under my current conditions. I feel really trapped and don’t know what to do.”
