What’s Popular On Streaming Now

substance movie
mubi

Every single week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.

10. TeacupPeacock series

The spooky season has wound down with the conclusion of this James Wan-produced series that is inspired by Robert McCammon’s Bram Stoker Award-nominated Stinger book. As with The Substance (which is higher up on this list), there’s a gross-out factor to be had, but this is more straight-up horror that is aided by the presence of The Strangers‘ Scott Speedman. For now, we await word of additional seasons.

9. TerritoryNetflix series

You might have heard the debate on whether this is “the next Yellowstone.” Well, the Australian series takes place on within The Outback and involves fellow cattle barons and wealthy villains attempting to seize a family ranch, but that might be where the similarities end (at least for now). Surely, a second-season renewal is forthcoming for this Neo-Western show that instantly sped up the streaming charts and managed to beat Kurt Sutter’s (or what used to be Kurt Sutter’s) The Abandons to the small screen. FYI, Netflix also has American Primeval coming next year for Western fans, too.

8. Don’t MoveNetflix movie

You surely have heard about “the man or the bear in a forest” question that periodically circles the Internet. That’s this movie in a nutshell. Also, Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi produces, so you know this will be a sick watch.

7. Escape At Dannemora – Showtime series streaming on Netflix

Netflix has done it again by reigniting interest for a long-off-the-airwaves series, but also, this limited series might help tide over those who are waiting for Ben Stiller’s Severance to return in January. The Stiller-directed Escape At Dannemora is based upon a real-life prison break of a pair of murderers, Richard Matt and David Sweat (portrayed by Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano), who happened to have help from a prison employee (Patricia Arquette) who also took special interest in both of these men.

6. The PenguinMax series

Colin Farrell has made it known, repeatedly, that he doesn’t enjoy the extensive prosthetics involved with portraying Oswald Cobblepot, but it sure sounds like he’ll receive an offer that he can’t refuse, so to speak, to do it again. Cristin Milioti did, however, appear to be having the time of her life as an antagonist. Her Sofia Falcone stole more than a few episodes, and although comic-book series have been more miss-than-hit over the past few years, this selection brought back appeal for Gotham around the same time that Joker 2 attempted to put a fork in it for good.

5. Woman Of The HourNetflix film

It’s tough for Anna Kendrick to look authentically “1970s,” but that’s the only minus of this entire film, which she directs like the pro that she is. Likewise, Daniel Zovatto damn well does his part by owning every moment on the screen as serial killer Rodney Alcala. This film already ranks high (with some admitted recency bias) on our list of top true-crime TV shows and movies, and a breakthrough performance comes from Autumn Best as a drifter whose story leads to both frightfulness and resolution. No matter how you feel going into this movie, you’ll leave while knowing exactly why women cannot afford to not be cautious while simply living their lives.

4. LionessParamount+ series

One of several Taylor Sheridan stories/sequel seasons is on the way back to screens in what happens to be one of many current Nicole Kidman streaming shows (and she ain’t done yet). Zoe Saldana, however, is most front and center in this series about a secret CIA program that is inspired by upon the real-life Marine Corps all-women Lioness program, and Saldana’s Joe, who is tasked with infiltrating terror cells and helping to dismantle them at the source. This season, the CIA moves to “infiltrate a previously unknown threat,” according to Paramount, but Joe is now faced with regret for “the profound personal sacrifices she has made as the leader of the Lioness program.”

3. The Lincoln LawyerNetflix series

Oh Mickey Haller, you’ve really found yourself in a jam this time. The good news is that Manuel Garcia-Rulfo has now officially eclipsed Matthew McConaughey’s turn on the infamous backseat attorney from Michael Connelly’s book series of the same name. The bad news is that the audience will have to wait for a resolution on that cliffhanger ending. However, the sixth The Lincoln Lawyer book will fill in some blanks if you cannot wait to find out what’s next, but Netflix has plenty more bingeworthy shows where this came from to keep you otherwise happy while clicking.

2. The SubstanceMubi movie

Eek. Come for Demi Moore’s righteous turn against female beauty standards and Margaret Qualley’s equally adventurous moves and stay for the downright grotesque body horror that follows. Also, it’s true (as Demi asserted) that the flat-out most nauseating part of the movie is Dennis Quaid eating prawns. For that and countless other scenes in the movie, Coralie Fargeat has fully established herself as a must-watch director after Revenge put her on the map. And as for Demi, she earned this role with everything that she’s endured in the business, including what she admitted to doing in previous eras of her career.

1. The DiplomatNetflix series

Netflix already answered a question on viewers minds by confirming that the infuriating Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) is still alive. That complicates matters even more for Kate (Keri Russell), and they will display a united front against the onscreen debut of Allison Janey as Vice President Grace Penn while Kate will wrestle with how to prove that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was behind the season finale catastrophe. As a heads up, only six episodes exist in this season, but they are all bangers.

DeMar DeRozan Had A Perfect Response To Drake Saying He’d Pull Down DeRozan’s Banner If They Retired It

It was a night for celebration in Toronto, as the Raptors retired the iconic number 15 worn by Vince Carter. And to put a cherry on top of what was a joyous evening in the 6, the Raptors were able to pick up a thrilling, 131-128 win over the Sacramento Kings in overtime, thanks to a 31-point outing by RJ Barrett.

Playing the Kings meant that another Toronto legend, DeMar DeRozan, was back in town. Drake, unsurprisingly, was also there, which set up a pretty funny back-and-forth. While sitting in the broadcast booth, Drake expressed that he does not want DeRozan to get a banner, saying “If you ever put a DeRozan banner up, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.”

Now, it’s unclear if this is serious or a joke, but it’s worth remembering that DeRozan was in the music video for Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and appeared on stage at The Pop Out while Lamar performed the song at the height of his feud with Drake earlier this year. And after the game, DeRozan got asked about Drake’s comments and had a simple response before getting up and walking away.

“He gonna have a long way to climb to take it down,” DeRozan said. “So, tell him good luck.”

It’s worth mentioning that when DeRozan was asked about the Drake-Kendrick feud, he said that “Drake’s still my man, still my man, none of it changed.” We’ll be sure to let you know if all of this tonight was in good fun or if things have changed between these two.

Joel Embiid Shoved A Reporter Who Wrote A Column Referencing His Son And Late Brother

The Philadelphia 76ers fell to 1-4 on the regular season on Saturday night, as the team picked up a 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. As has been the case every time they’ve taken the floor this year, the Sixers were without the services of Joel Embiid, who is ramping up following an issue the team discovered in his left knee.

But despite not taking the floor, Embiid was involved in an incident after the game. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Embiid “assaulted a reporter in the locker room.” There wasn’t a ton of information in the aftermath, but eventually, Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Embiid got into it with the person who wrote “a recent column that referenced his late brother,” which featured a shove but no punch.

Earlier this week, Embiid spoke with the media in Philly and got uncharacteristically fired up, saying “When I see people saying he doesn’t want to play. I’ve done way too much for this city, putting myself at risk for people to be saying that. So, I do think it’s bullsh*t.” In particular, he called out “that dude, he’s not here, Marcus, whatever his name is,” a reference to Pompey’s colleague, Marcus Hayes.

Presumably, the reporter Embiid got into it with is Hayes, who wrote a column in October titled “Joel Embiid disrespects the Sixers, the game, its greats, and himself. Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley are right to rip him.” While the piece has since been edited to remove the references to Embiid’s son and late brother, you can read what it originally said here.

UPDATE: Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports spoke about the altercation on the PHLY Sixers Postgame Show and explained how the altercation came about, with Embiid telling Hayes not to mention his family, before the two went back and forth for nearly two minutes with Embiid eventually shoving Hayes. Per Neubeck, Sixers security staff and players stepped in quickly.

Fans Believe Olivia Rodrigo’s Dating ‘Red Flag’ Is A Hilarious Yet Unintentional Jab At Elon Musk

According to Olivia Rodrigo, she’s “having the time of her life.” Most of that joy can be attributed to the monumental success of her sophomore album Guts and supporting world tour. But it could also have something to do with her blossoming relationship with Louis Partridge.

But their growing love, didn’t stop Olivia from thinking back on her past dating experience. During a sit down with Netflix (viewable here) to celebrate the Guts World Tour film, Olivia Rodrigo revealed that her dating red flags and fans believe it is a hilarious yet unintentional jab at Elon Musk and his SpaceX efforts.

To weed out who Olivia would continue to date, she asks about their thoughts on space adventures. “This is a very oddly specific question that I ask guys on first dates,” she said. “I always ask them if they think that they would want to go to space. And if they say yes, I don’t date them.”

Olivia went on to explain the line of questioning, saying: “I just think if you wanna go to space, you’re a little too full of yourself. I think it’s just weird.”

Overwhelmingly, fans agreed with Olivia Rodrigo’s hot take.

“Is this Elon Musk shade? 😭,” jokingly asked one user.

“Oh, she clocked Elon hard,” wrote another.

Others questioned if Olivia was subtly addressing Ariana Grande’s now viral lie detector test results.

“Is she trying to low-key shade Arianna,” asked one user.

Olivia Rodrigo hasn’t addressed the public reactions to her comments.

Goldberg Announced His Retirement Match In WWE Will Be Next Year

Goldberg is finally going to get his sendoff match in the WWE, he announced on Saturday morning ahead of Georgia-Florida.

Goldberg’s return to the WWE comes after he was confronted by World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther, at last month’s Bad Blood live event. Gunther downplayed Goldberg’s wrestling ability, then told his son he hopes he was a better father than he was a wrestler. This caused Goldberg to jump the barricade and go after Gunther before security intervened. While Sami Zayn successfully attacked the champ, Goldberg made his way into the ring and told the camera, “You’re next.”

During the Bad Blood press conference, we asked Triple H about the possibility of seeing Goldberg wrestling another match in WWE, after the former world champion has been quite vocal about his desire to have a retirement match.

“Atlanta loves Bill Goldberg, and that’s why he was here tonight. He was with his wife and his son, always going to get a huge reaction here enjoying the show,” Triple H said at the time. “Things get said. I can tell you when Bill came back, he was not too happy with Gunther and we’ll see. The further you go, time catches up with all of us. The further you go, the talks get further and further away from reality. But I don’t know, I saw Bill earlier in the day and it was great. And I saw Bill later in the day, and there was a different look on his face and a spark in his eye. So I would say never say never.”

Goldberg last wrestled at the Elimination Chamber in 2022 against Roman Reigns. There’s no current word on the time, date, or location of Goldberg’s final match. It will, however, seemingly coincide with John Cena’s retirement tour.

Next to a parent’s love, the bond of siblings is also nearly unbreakable. Today (November 2), one person learned this lesson the hard way. In a now viral video, Jason Kelce came face-to-face with a troll. Given that the former Super Bowl champion announced his retirement in March, the hate wasn’t exactly aimed at him.

Outside of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions’ game, Jason was surrounded by fans. As many hoped to snag a selfie with the former professional footballer, one person can he heard hurling insults at Jason about his brother Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s budding romance. In the video captured by an onlooker, the person yells, “How does it feel that your brother’s a f****t for dating Taylor Swift?”

Shocked by the use of the homophobic slur, the filmer lowered their camera. Once the camera panned back up (viewable here courtesy of Pop Crave), you can see Jason slamming a cell phone to the ground.

Now, users online have jumped to Jason’s defense. “Jason is so real for this… no brother would hear such remarks against his own brother and his gf btw,” wrote one user.

“We need more men like him,” penned another.

“Oh, he put him in his place real quick, King 👑,” chimed another.

“That’s disgusting and unacceptable behavior. No one deserves to be harassed or insulted like that,” added another.

In the past, Jason has expressed his fondness of his brother Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s relationship after spilling the beans.

The Report That Claimed Future And Drake Squashed Their Beef Is False, According To Akademiks

Fans of Drake and Future’s reconciliation celebration parade was short-lived. According to Uproxx’s Elliott Wilson the former collaborators mended their friendship.

During The Bigger Picture‘s latest episode (viewable here), Wilson claimed that the hip-hop heavy weights’ feud was official over. “I have it on good authority that Drake and Future have at least gotten on the phone and resolved their differences,” he said.

However, shortly after HipHopDX posted the confessional clip (viewable here), another industry figure came out to refute the remark. On his own platform, online commentator Akademiks shared insider knowledge to the contrary. “I’ve spoken to extremely credible sources on both sides, and Drake and Future have not been on the phone,” he said (viewable here courtesy of NFR Podcast).

Both Wilson and Akademiks have deep ties to rappers and their close affiliates. So, this has quickly become a case of he said, he said. Users across X (formerly Twitter), have expressed their frustration with these opposing recounts.

“See now this is what we aren’t gonna do, have two different stories over and over again. We need answers,” wrote one user.

Others have begun to question why Drake and Future were at odds to begin with. Hip-hop fans can understand Drake’s disdain for Metro Boomin, Kendrick Lamar, and Asap Rocky. But the supposed tension between Drake and Future has some stumped.

Dave Grohl’s marriage to Jordyn Blum could be on the rocks. But according to recent reports, the “Show Me How” musician is working to mend their union.

Back in September, Grohl revealed that he fathered a daughter outside of his marriage to Blum. In a note share online, Grohl expressed his intention to serve both as a great father to the girl and rebuild his marriage.

“I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness,” he wrote. “We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.”

Now, according to People, Grohl’s plans are panning out. In the outlet’s latest report, Grohl has called off his divorce attorney.

‘The Madison’: Everything To Know So Far About Taylor Sheridan’s Next Chapter In His ‘Yellowstone’ Universe (Update Nov. 2024)

Taylor Sheridan
Getty Image

Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming TV slate appears to know no end. Tulsa King‘s second season finale lands this month with a spin off in the works. Lioness is currently delivering its own second season like no other Sheridan show out there. The explosive Landman series will soon debut, and Yellowstone will supposedly be coming to an end as a series.

Next year, 1923 will air its final season, and after that? The mythical 1966 series lingers on the horizon, but much sooner (and on a more concrete note), The Madison will arrive with a new set of stars to continue a new leg of the Yellowstone saga, so let’s get to it.

Plot

The Madison is the series that was long presumed (because Sheridan tends to lean into year-based titles) to be called 2024. The series will be contemporary, which makes it a convenient followup to Yellowstone even though Paramount Network hasn’t completely ruled out a sixth season focusing on Beth and Rip. Additionally, 2024 was the show that was rumored to involve Matthew McConaughey, but he appears to be entirely out of this picture.

The show’s very simple logline has described The Madison as a “heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.” Neither Paramount nor Sheridan has updated with details on how long this NYC family has been residing within Montana, or if they even permanently live there at all, or if that “grief” is connected to any other Yellowstone universe characters.

Through casting announcements (below), more hints are coming together.

Cast

Michelle Pfieffer (The Fabulous Baker Boys, Scarface) and Matthew Fox (Lost, Party Of Five) will lead the series with Pfieffer portraying a matriarch with multiple daughters who have been entrenched in the NYC lifestyle.

Of those daughters, Firefly Lane‘s Beau Garrett picked up the role of Abigail Reese, who is a resilient New Yorker and a divorced mom. Her eldest daughter will be portrayed by Amish Miller. Elle Chapman (Florida Wild) will portray Paige McIntosh, a spoiled New Yorker and wife to Russell McIntosh, an investment banker portrayed by Suits star Patrick J. Adams.

Fox’s character, meanwhile, has been referred to as “a self-reliant bachelor who loves the outdoors.” Hold onto your cowboy hats for him, surely.

Release Date

Yellowstone‘s “final” season will pop off this month with Lioness continuing and Tulsa King winding down its second season. 1923 will likely arrive in mid-2025 with The Madison surely on the Yellowstone agenda next, although Paramount+ hasn’t revealed an exact date at this time.

Trailer

With no trailer in sight yet, here’s a Paramount+ interview with Sheridan reflecting on his growing TV universe.
