A year-and-a-half ago, Justin Bieber started an unexpected feud when he tweeted at Tom Cruise, “I wanna challenge Tom Cruise to fight in the octagon. Tom if you dont take this fight your scared and you will never live it down.” Bieber later insisted he was just joking around, saying, “I don’t know him. He’s tight. The story is I saw an interview with him, and he was just on my mind. It was just a random tweet. I do that stuff sometimes.”

Well, it looks like Cruise was on Bieber’s mind again over the weekend, as he invoked the feud on Instagram. Sharing a photo of himself as a boxer in his recent “Anyone” video, Bieber wrote, “Tom Cruise is toast.”

The comments were filled with support from some recognizable names, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who referenced the Rocky movies and wrote, “‘You’re gonna eat lightning and crap thunder’ go get em bro.” Bieber collaborator Benny Blanco also chimed in, “def knocking me out in the first round.”

The end of Bieber’s 2020 seems to have been up and down. He confronted fans who bully his wife Hailey Bieber and took exception to his Grammy nominations, but he also collaborated with Shawn Mendes and performed at the People’s Choice Awards.

The third season of Cobra Kai kicked off on January 1st, which was a perfect way to begin 2021. The series, which moved over from the now-defunct YouTube Red, found a huge audience on Netflix, and the third season is getting mostly rave reviews. I loved it, too, although I thought it had a bit of a “Negan” problem, which is to say that the season may have spent a little too much time on John Kreese and the bullying tactics of the new Cobra Kai. Still, in the end, it was as rousing as ever and closed out the season in a way that was both satisfying and successfully set up the fourth season.

If there is one glaring, weak link in Cobra Kai, however, it’s Anthony LaRusso. Viewers may remember him from season one as the lazy, entitled, tech-obsessed brat who cared more about whip cream than he did karate.

To be clear, however, Anthony LaRusso was a Season One problem and not a Season Three problem, and that’s because Anthony LaRusso had only one scene in the entire third season, lingering on screen only long enough for viewers to wonder, “Is that the same kid?” It is, in fact, the same kid, Griffin Santopietro, who clearly hit his grown spurt between the second and third season (he’s 13 years old).

As it stands, however, Anthony was all but written out to the show. There were a couple of passing references to him this season (mostly about being at sleepovers). He obviously couldn’t be killed off the series, because Cobra Kai is not that kind of show. The original problem, unfortunately, is that in an effort to draw a stark contrast between Anthony and his father, Daniel LaRusso, in the first season, the writers overshot and annihilated the character so badly that they could only bring him back for a few scenes in three episodes in Season Two, and just the one in Season Three, where he eats a popsicle and expresses mock disappointing in his sister. At least his brand is still strong.

I understand why the writers tried what they tried in the opening season, and the idea was a good one. They wanted to show that Anthony had become basically the opposite of who Daniel was in the original Karate Kid — wealthy, entitled, lazy — and to illustrate that, for all his great qualities, Daniel still had some flaws, mostly in the parenting department. He is raising essentially his own Johnny Lawrence without any athletic skill. The character, however, did not resonate.

The audience rejected it; in fact, the scenes with Anthony in the opening season were more uncomfortable than funny. It was smart to bury him. It might also, however, be fun to introduce him as something akin to The Next Karate Kid in Season Four, taking on the role of Hilary Swank’s character in a spiritual sense. It would be fitting, especially as the fourth installment of the series was the worst received of all the movies. If they choose to go that route, however, hopefully Griffin Santopietro can be remembered as fondly as Hilary Swank.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season Three is now streaming on Netflix.

Whenever somebody discusses any sort of ranking of the greatest rapper ever, it tends to generate a lot of discussion, as pretty much everybody has a different opinion on who is truly the best. It seems like every day, some famous music figure makes a declaration about who the elite rappers are, and now it’s DaBaby’s turn.

In an Instagram post from over the weekend, he declared that he and Lil Wayne are the “best rappers alive.” Sharing photos of himself and Wayne in the studio, he captioned his post, “Best rappers alive,” then tagged Wayne and added a goat emoji. He later shared the post on his Instagram Story and added, “Wayne music was our Bible!”

This is certainly not the first time DaBaby has publicly discussed his admiration for Lil Wayne. In late 2019, for example, DaBaby was asked about the one rapper he would like to collaborate with, and he responded, “I got a song with Lil Wayne. That was amazing so I’m good. That’s the GOAT in my era, that’s the GOAT. That’s probably who I was most influenced by music-wise growing up.”

Meanwhile, Eminem recently gave his pick for the best rapper ever, and his selection is… nobody.

It may no longer be the go-to punchline for bad series finales (congrats to Game of Thrones), but the final episode of Dexter is a notorious stinker. Airing on September 22, 2013, “Remember the Monsters?” was a “flabby, flaccid, manipulative, horrible cop out of an ending,” with serial killer Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, leaving sunny Florida for the woods of Oregon to become a lumberjack. The Dexter revival won’t undo the finale — “What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years,” original showrunner Clyde Phillips said — but according to Hall, it will set things right.

“I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before,” the Six Feet Under star told the Daily Beast when asked about bringing back Dexter as a 10-episode limited series. He continued:

“And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.”

Hall, who was also in one of the best TV finales ever, believes that the negative response to the lumberjack ending was “warranted,” although “I certainly thought it was justifiable for Dexter to do what he did. I think some of the criticisms were about that, and some of the criticisms weren’t so much about the ‘what’ as they were about the ‘how,’ and those were valid, too.” How can Dexter undo a famously terrible ending? Two words:

Replace Dexter’s dad with Doakes.

Based on how popular Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” was in 2020, pretty much everybody has heard the hit single. That actually might not include Cardi’s own daughter, Kulture, though, as it looks as though Cardi doesn’t like Kulture listening to the explicit song.

In an Instagram Live video from after Christmas, Cardi is seen lip-syncing along to the song in her home, and a few seconds in, she notices Kulture entering the room in the background. When she turns around and spots her daughter, she quickly stops the song and exclaims, “No no no no no no no.” She then takes a drink, acting like nothing had happened.

Cardi B has defended the song’s lyrics on multiple occasions, even against her own label, which was hesitant to even release it, as Cardi previously explained, “I just wanted, like at least a top ten. ‘Cause, it got to the point one time that even my label asked, ‘Yo, are you sure? Because this song, it’s so raunchy. You cannot even play it in certain places.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not gonna make this girl do another verse to another song. She like the song and it’s fire.’ They were like, ‘You know, you’re right. It is what it is.’ And it just exceeded everything.”

The Sister: Season 1 (Hulu original limited series streaming 1/22)

ITV commissioned this series with Hulu, and it’s already a hit in the U.K. The show’s based upon Burial, a best selling novel by Neil Cross (Luther) and involves a family’s life being rocked into oblivion when a presence from the past literally shows up on the porch with some unwelcome and shocking news. This development, of course, transforms into catastrophic decisions and long-lasting effects that aren’t so desirable.

The Ultimate Playlist of Noise (Hulu original film streaming 1/15)

A high-school senior must face up to the fact that his upcoming brain surgery will leave him deaf, and given that he adores music, he sets upon grabbing onto his own fate by recording the ultimate bucket-playlist. And then he takes a wild road trip alongside a struggling musician while they both experience transformative revelations.

Endlings: Season 2 (Hulu original series streaming 1/15)

Sci-fi fans will enjoy seeing the return of this crew, who must accept that they can change the future and (at least) make up for the mistakes of the past without achieving a full-on reckoning. The very fate of the planet and humanity depends on their continued fight, and the endearing group is here for it.

The Washington Football Team are playoff bound as the NFC East champions after beating the Eagles 20-14 on Sunday night in what was, fittingly, a hideous football game.

The final quarter of play saw some hilariously bad play, thanks in large part to the Eagles pulling Jalen Hurts from the game and inserting, not Carson Wentz but Nate Sudfeld into the game. Sudfeld responded with two turnovers late to kill any chances of Philly to upset the Football Team and ruin their hopes of a getting a higher draft pick in one of the most blatant examples of tanking you’ll see.

This was upsetting, chiefly, to Giants players and fans who needed a Philly win to make the playoffs after having held on to beat the Cowboys earlier in the day. The G Men were all at home watching with baited breath and when Pederson swapped Sudfeld in for Hurts, well, they couldn’t believe their eyes.

Golden Tate was the most vocal as he lobbed various theories at the wall as to why the Eagles would so blatantly tank the final quarter with the game on the line, taking it as the Eagles simply hate the Giants more than the Football Team.

Hurts didn’t have a great passing night, but he had accounted for the Eagles only scores of the game with two rushing touchdowns. Given how long it took for Philly to make the switch to Hurts, you would think maybe they would want to get him as many game reps as possible, particularly in a close game like that one, but their eyes were on the draft (and keeping Hurts healthy) going forward and so, we got Sudfeld action. Maybe making matters worse and twisting the knife on the Giants was this explanation after the game from Eagles coach Doug Pederson.

Eagles fans won’t care and Football Team fans will be grateful as they now play host to the Bucs on Saturday night for playoff action. Whenever we get our first Giants-Eagles game next fall, though, expect there to be some extra juice on the New York side after what transpired on Sunday.

Sunday morning many people logged onto Twitter dot com to find that the online discourse had become focused on “Bean Dad.”

The basic gist, for those unaware, is that John Roderick, a musician and podcaster, took to Twitter to oddly brag about refusing to show his 9-year-old daughter how a handheld can opener works for six hours after he instructed her to open a can of baked beans in order to eat. It was very strange and led to a lot of folks dunking on “Bean Dad” for what simply amounts to bad parenting by blaming your young daughter for an inability to do something when you are the one in charge of teaching them such things.

Beyond that, however, it led people to dive into Roderick’s old tweets which brought up some really ugly and racist stuff — as well as rape jokes. That led to his podcast co-host, Ken Jennings, defending his tweets, including some he has about Jews and, in turn, potentially tanking his own career in the process. Many Jeopardy! fans had already called on the show to not make him the new host as is expected once the show goes through its revolving guest host process — which starts with Jennings this month.

Jennings, who had an entire tweet thread last week about everyone needing to be better towards others and apologizing for some offensive things he’s said in the past, would soon try and just ignore everything by tweeting videos of hummingbirds outside his window. James Holzhauer, who will join Jennings and Brad Rutter on ABC’s new trivia show The Chase, decided to back Jennings’ character on Twitter himself after the backlash arrived for Jennings.

Holzhauer later recognized that he too may have made a mistake by coming to Jennings’ aid and noted that Rutter might end up the only one gainfully employed by simply not tweeting, with Jennings trying to join in on the fun.

The damage may be done, however, at least for Jennings, as his swift defense of his podcast host seemingly failed to recognize that maybe this wasn’t a situation to do that — particularly given how ugly some of the tweets are. Roderick has since deleted his account, but the screenshots live forever and people have continually sent them to Jennings in the replies — Warning: they really are awful.

One day celebrities might learn that some things are indefensible, no matter how much you like someone, and that it’s not “cancel culture” out to take someone down when the person in question refers to “mud-people” and has a significant number of anti-Semitic and homophobic tweets over the period of a number of years. That’s just calling out what someone has said themselves and you don’t have to defend that.

You could, say, choose to condemn it and even say you’ll address it on your podcast with them if you really want to give them a platform to defend how they’ve changed, but going on Twitter to insist that this thing he’s said over and over isn’t consistent with their character is not the move. Alas, Jennings has made the worst choice possible and Holzhauer dipped a toe in the pool thinking it was fun and games only to come to find it very much isn’t.

We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of this from any of Jennings’ TV show partners in the form of an official statement, but at the very least, the man who was at the peak of his popularity and seemed a near lock to take over a rather cushy gig on the ever-popular Jeopardy! has now put that in, no pun intended, jeopardy by defending some truly abhorrent tweets.

The Golden State Warriors have got off to a rough start to the season at 2-3, most notably getting blown out in their first two games of the season on national TV. They were again routed at the hands of the Blazers on Friday after two wins over East bottom feeders in Chicago and Detroit, and the online discourse turned its attention to one Stephen Curry.

There was a lot of talk on social media over the weekend (and really since the first two losses to start the season) about the two-time MVP and calling into question whether he was capable of putting up those tremendous performances we became accustomed to on a bad team where he is the central focus.

The answer from Curry came on Sunday when he erupted for a career-high 62 points in a 137-122 win over Portland in the second game of their mini-series at the Chase Center. Curry was 18-of-31 from the field, 18-of-19 from the free throw line, and 8-of-16 from three-point range on Sunday as the chef made his triumphant return — and made quite a statement — to get Golden State back to 3-3 on the season. Curry got started early, going off for 21 points in the opening quarter as it seemed he had a bit of a fire lit under him.

He didn’t quite keep up that same pace, but still dominated the game, leading the Warriors to a runaway win thanks to some preposterous, vintage Curry shots from way downtown, where it didn’t matter how aggressive the closeouts were, the ball was going up and it was going in.

His last three was the best example of that, as he hoisted from almost out of bounds on the left wing over a hard contest, finding nothing but net and launching him into an airplane celebration to the delight of his teammates.

Steph’s splash brother Klay Thompson enjoyed the performance and welcomed him to the 60-point club on Twitter, while actual brother Seth likewise enjoyed the show in Philly.

It was a sensational performance, one that should quiet some of the chatter around him. He came into the night averaging 26.4 points on some rough efficiency (42 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from three) but put all that behind him for a scoring performance for the ages on Sunday. He’ll surely mention that the win was the most important thing on the night, but you know he had at least heard some of what folks were saying and whether he’ll admit it or not, it had to have felt really good to quiet all of that in this way against a good team like Portland.
