Metro Boomin Is Turning His ‘Heroes & Villains’ Album Into A Comic Book, ‘The Metroverse’

Over the past few years, hip-hop artists have publicly indulged a wider range of interests, and in doing so, found more avenues to express their creativity. One of those is comic books; plenty of rappers, like Isaiah Rashad, have long been fans, and recently, some of them, like Flatbush Zombies, Rico Nasty, and Vince Staples, have written their own comic books.

Joining their number is one of the most fitting figures to have a comic book, Metro Boomin. His last album was called Heroes & Villains, and it did have a running theme based in the world of comic book superheroes, with samples taken from The Boys. His Zero Zero-published comic will be called The Metroverse; it’s co-written by Ryan Cady, who’s written for DC and Marvel, as well as Adventure Time, illustrated by Vasilis Lolos, and edited by Joshua Frankel. Fred Stresing is on colors, Micah Meyers does the letters, and Vincent Kings will handle design and back-up story art. The story will be about “Metro’s musical journey portrayed in an immersive comic universe.” No word yet on if Drake will appear as a villain.

The first issue will debut this week, with a special pop-up at NTWRK LA on Fairfax in Los Angeles on June 13th from 11am to 7pm PT. You can find more information about the release here.

Did Eminem Do His Own Stunts In The ‘Houdini’ Video?

In Eminem’s new “Houdini” video, he resurrects the “Rap Boy” character from his 2002 “Without Me” video to chase down his rampaging Slim Shady alter ego. The comedic video revived Em’s tradition of launching album rollouts with cartoony videos highlighting his sense of humor — which hasn’t changed much in the 25 years since “My Name Is.”

Eminem, as Rap Boy, gets into all sorts of shenanigans, but perhaps his name should be “Fall Boy,” as he slams into the ground over and over again in a behind-the-scenes video Eminem posted on social media. And while Em puts on a display of lyrical feats in the video, perhaps the 51-year-old’s most impressive is doing his own stunts.

While the reception of the song has been… well… mixed, Eminem did say his mission is to be the best rapper, not make the best songs. That didn’t stop the song from debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, over 25 years into his career.

And as for the video, which, like the visual for “Without Me,” parodies the 1960s Batman show, it received a warm reception from the family of that show’s star, Adam West, whose campy depiction of the comic book legend was a big inspiration. You can watch the video above.

Which Artists Appear On The ‘Bridgerton Season 3 Part 2’ Soundtrack?

bridgerton-s3-2-lg
Netflix

Just like how having slowed down versions of classic rock songs was the trendy thing to do in the trailers of the early 2000s, having orchestral arrangements of your favorite pop songs is the latest way to be on-trend.

Bridgerton didn’t invent the orchestral cover, but it sure did popularize it. The Netflix series has featured covers of iconic pop songs since its first season in 2020, and now for the second part of season three, there will be a whole new batch of regal covers heading to your ears.

The budding love story between Colin and Penelope, among the rest of the royal drama, will be accompanied by the following covers:

Ariana Grande, “POV”
Coldplay, “Yellow ”
Demi Lovato, “Confident”
Ellie Goulding, “Lights”
Imagine Dragons, “Thunder”
Taylor Swift, “You Belong With Me”

Netflix also dropped “All I Want” the first original song for the series performed by Tori Kelly.

Of the iconic covers, Music Supervisor Justin Kamps told Netflix that it helps connect the audience with the story. “It’s a good link for everyone to instantly recognize their own feelings in these characters that are in a very different environment than they are. But these songs that people know immediately help connect you even more to these characters. And, obviously, they’re all dealing with feelings that everyone still deals with now,” he explained. “I feel like that added level of the covers just helps bring people in even more and just gives it such a unique style for these dance sequences.”

Bridgerton season three Part 2 comes out on June 13.

Is ‘Dancing For The Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult’ A True Story?

dancing
Netflix

The Netflix doc Dancing For The Devil might start out with just a carefree group of TikTok dancers, but the actual story is just as heartbreaking as it is real (and currently ongoing).

The three-episode docuseries first introduces the world to 7M, a management company that helps TikTok dancers and influencers earn money via brand deals and other opportunities. The company was started in 2021 by Robert Shinn, a Los Angeles-based pastor and leader of the Shekinah Church. This is where things get dicey.

According to the documentary, not only was Shinn pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his talent, but he also forced the young dancers to cut off their family and friends, including Miranda Wilking of the TikTok-famous Wilking sisters. The Wilkings are a main part of the docuseries and to this day are still fighting to get their daughter back home.

What have the members said? Not much. In fact, a lot of the 7M members are still a part of the cult. The Instagram account Exposing7M shows just how many people are involved in both 7M and the Shekinah Church, which has been around since 1994.

In response to the documentary, Miranda Wilking has posted the following on Instagram: “I have been getting together with my family for the past couple of years, privately, to work on our relationship, to make things right, to mend what has been broken. I’ve been loving getting together, laughing, just enjoying each other’s company. And this documentary has made it very difficult to continue doing that.”

Meanwhile, the dancers who have left are grateful for the documentary. Former member Kiley Douglas told Netflix, “I’m hoping that the dancers still in the management group and still in Shekinah will be able to see this documentary. I’m not sure if it will be hidden from them. Maybe they’re not allowed to watch it, but I’m hoping that they do and that maybe it will spark some questions in their minds and have them rethink about their lives before, as well as what their lives could be after this group.”

It’s not just TikTokers who fell victim to the cult: Dancing For The Devil also follows various former members who spent decades following Robert Shinn. At least three members of the organization also accused Shinn of sexual misconduct. No criminal charges have been filed against Shinn at this time, and he is still managing dozens of young talent.

Dancing For The Devil is currently streaming on Netflix.

Miley Cyrus Plays Role Reversal In A Teaser For Season 5 Of David Letterman’s ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction’

David Letterman‘s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is returning for its fifth season this week, and in true Letterman fashion, he shakes up the form in a teaser for the first episode, featuring Miley Cyrus. In a clip from the upcoming episode, Cyrus steps on stage and introduces Letterman instead of the other way around, playing role reversal for what should be a fascinating conversation that shakes up talk show conventions. “I like to do things my own way,” Miley explained. “I turned it around on him and said, ‘You can be in my show.”

Over the course of Letterman’s show, he’s interviewed such luminaries as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Will Smith, Billie Eilish, and Cardi B, among others.

The last season of the show aired in 2022, although earlier this year, Letterman did a special episode with John Mulaney, who recently tried his own hand at a talk show for Netflix (unfortunately for those delighted by the hilariously unhinged Everybody’s In LA, he has no plans to continue).

Letterman’s conversation with Cyrus will be their first televised interview since 2010, when the then-17-year-old Miley was rolling out her third studio album Can’t Be Tamed. Letterman retired from The Late Show in 2015, starting his new show with Netflix in 2018.

You can watch the teaser for season 5 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction above. Season 5 debuts June 12.

The Rock Showed Off The Painful Injury He Got While Filming A24’s ‘The Smashing Machine’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson smashed up his elbow while filming The Smashing Machine. “Look at that sucker right there,” the star of A24‘s mixed martial arts drama directed by Benny Safdie said in a video posted to Instagram. “It looks like I have a cantaloupe in the bottom of my elbow. I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes, and there might be some soft tissue damage in there. That’s a lot of fluid, we’ll see. I’ve got to get it out of there first before I can get any kind of MRI.”

The wrestler-turned-actor shared the “rub some dirt in it”-like advice he used to get from his late father, Rocky Johnson.

“He always used to say, ‘A day without pain is like a day without sunshine, boy,’” Johnson said before asking his followers for any advice on how to treat the injury. “I’ve been banged up in the past before, I’ve had injuries before… but if you guys have any advanced advice on some great anti-inflammatories, please let me know.”

The video then turned into a promo for his Teremana Tequila (“This might be my favorite anti-inflammatory”), because The Rock is always on — even when he has to take a few days off.

You can watch the kitchen-shot Instagram video below, although beware, his elbow looks very… squishy.

Along with The Rock, who is portrays former MMA champ Mark Kerr, The Smashing Machine also stars Emily Blunt. It does not currently have a release date.
