Guest Appearances On The ‘Parks And Recreation’ Quarantine Special, Ranked

The Parks And Recreation reunion special filled itself with delightful moments that added up one of the most pleasant half hours of quarantine-based programming we’ve seen since our current situation began. There were callbacks aplenty (with one curiously missing signature quote) and an emotional ending that made folks truly sentimental, five years after the beloved comedy bid farewell to primetime. If folks were worried that the political framing of the original show would ruin the reunion vibe, those fears have now evaporated. Overall, the effort was a success that will hopefully raise plenty of money for their cause, Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund, for which folks can make donations right here. All contributions will be matched by the reumion’s sponsors until May 21, so folks have time to toss any feasible contributions into the pot.

The special not only contained O.G. cast members — Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Jim O’Heir, and Retta — but more than a handful of guest appearances from the Pawnee universe made entrances. Even though all of them were welcome in our living rooms, we can’t resist ranking them (and maybe bending the roles of what “guest” actually means during these unprecedented times).

8. Perd Hapley:

Someone had to come in last, no offense to Jay Jackson, who portrayed the host that’s now fronting Ya’ Heard? With Perd. Through no real fault of his own (other than exuding less pizazz than his competitors), Perd mostly functioned as a framing device for several of the more entertaining guests who landed on this special.

7. Dennis Feinstein:

The first Pawnee-based commercial came from Dennis Feinstein, who’s now shilling a “Miracle Cure” that he’s snake-oil-salesman-ing all over the place. It’s a relevant tactic, of course, given what’s going down in White House press conferences and ultra-right-wing podcasts every day. And Jason Mantzoukas absolutely crushed the skeevy vibe while claiming that this potion-scent would kill any virus upon contact. This is actually a frightening interlude, so that takes away a few points toward the goal of becoming the “winner” within what’s otherwise a feel-good reunion.

6. Joan Callamezzo:

Mo Collins’ talk show queen, now host of At Home With Joan, got in a few decent (and drunken) wisecracks about Jennifer Lopes and her own unique way of receiving an EGOT. The segment was amusing enough, although Callamezzo (also) hits a little too close to home for all of us who are scarfing wine during the new Saturday night quarantine shuffle. Dare I say that Joan probably needed to up her game with a few gimmicks? That’s why she’s missing out on a higher ranking.

5. Dr. Jeremy Jamm:

Now, this guy’s got your gimmicks. Jon Glaser’s dentist character is perfectly willing to help out folks who are in dire need of dental care by selling them the drills to get the job done. Yikes, but this qualifies as morbidly amusing stuff, given that many of us are now wary of even getting a dental cleaning (or any other procedures that aren’t emergencies) anytime in the near future. The robe and the hair are also wildly on point here.

4. Tammy II:

Anyone who didn’t realize that Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are married probably wondered (at least for a few moments) how these two pulled off a wonderful stunt without upsetting the social-distancing balance. And even those of us who are aware of the real-life pairing found this breakaway — with Ron Swanson revealing that Tammy II had been lurking around his cabin and needed to be restrained — to be a wickedly funny surprise. What a well-planned reveal, and kudos to the writers and the cast for pulling this one out of their hats.

3. Jean-Ralphio Saperstein:

Ben Schwartz’s character’s slowly losing his mind, much like the rest of us, although it’s difficult to feel bad for someone who’s quarantined in a mansion. Still, this guest appearance was an inventive one, especially when one considers that he gave the best Pawnee-based commercial off the bunch. The guy wasn’t even advertising anything, other than his “personal phone number” (930-1-Ralphio) that he hopes might reap a little vocal company. He’s “sad,” and for good reason, because anyone who actually dials that phone number will find that it goes nowhere. A recorded message would have been a nice bonus, but we can’t have everything that we want.

2. Bobby Newport:

Although I may get pushback for not ranking a Paul Rudd character in the highest slot of any list, he’s still the first-place loser, so that must count for something. Newport surfaced in the special’s opening moments while brandishing a Knope 2012 sweatshirt and supposedly sequestering himself in Switzerland. He’s not the brightest bulb out there, but Newport still did a fine job of giving the Parks And Recreation audience all the necessary details on how to make Feeding America contributions. Oddly enough, it seems that learning of the COVID pandemic may have made Newport-Rudd look slightly older than a 25-year-old angel for the first time in history. This pandemic is getting to all of us.

1. Tie — Johnny Karate and Burt Macklin, FBI:

Alright, yes, I’m breaking a rule here if one doesn’t consider Andy Dwyer’s alter egos to be “guest appearances,” but all the rules have been broken in 2020, so why not continue that trend? Further, I’m humbled to be reminded that Chris Pratt is still capable of being terrifically funny (after going into action-nerd mode with the MCU and Jurassic World franchise), even when he’s “buff” rather than, well, you know how folks remember Andy’s previous physique. Through his alter egos, especially when it came to Johnny Karate, he made fans (and their kids) quite happy, which was the name of the game here, and that was even before Johnny Karate pulled a muscle “right in my butthole.”

Mr. Karate also did not shy away from showing some emotion while letting kids know that this quarantine might seem like it’s lasting forever, but that things will eventually land in a more tolerable state for them. Elsewhere, Andy briefly assumed the Burt Macklin persona while he was stuck outside in the shed as Aubrey Plaza’s April sat alone in the house with underwear on his head. Burt will eventually find his way out of the shed, but good on Pratt (and the writers) for reviving these alter-egos, which (at least for me) felt like the most emotional moments of the reunion before Pratt commenced with turned out to be a sentimental-ending musical number. What an unexpectedly rewarding special this turned out to be from the Parks And Recreation gang with Pratt as the surprise MVP.

The ‘Parks And Recreation’ reunion special is now available to stream on Hulu as well as NBC’s website and app.

Justin Bieber And Ariana Grande Are Teasing A ‘Special Announcement’

A lot of things in entertainment are subject to delay or cancelation right now, but there are still new things being announced. For example, it looks like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande have something in the works, as both took to social media yesterday to tease a “special announcement” coming today (May 1).

Yesterday, Bieber tweeted, “Special announcement tomorrow at 10 am pst …” Grande then fanned the flames by re-sharing the tweet and adding, “see u there everybody.”

Neither have given any indication of what this announcement could be. It wouldn’t be surprising if the forthcoming announcement was for some sort of charitable endeavor, though, as artists are doing a lot of that during the pandemic. Either way, it wouldn’t be their first link-up. Grande joined Bieber for a few dates of his Believe Tour in 2013, and she also hopped on a remix of “What Do You Mean” in 2015.

Bieber also joined Grande for a surprise performance at Coachella in 2019, and he later said that moment gave him the confidence to return to music: “I was dealing with a lot of fear… just even the process. What am I going to talk about again? Is it going to be received? […] I seen the reaction of how people reacted when I went on the stage. Just kind of reminded me, ‘Oh, this is what I do. This is what I’m good at.’”

Here’s Everything New On Netflix This Week, Including Ryan Murphy’s ‘Hollywood’ And ‘The Last Kingdom’

Netflix wraps up the month of April with the return of a Viking epic, a new drama from Ryan Murphy, and a hell of a lot of movies to keep our queues full during quarantine.

A BBC series, The Last Kingdom, returns for more medieval warfare. It’s a worthy sub for Game of Thrones fans looking for their next bingewatch. And Ryan Murphy dreams up an inclusive old Hollywood with his period drama starring Darren Criss. Of course, you could just feast on all of the quality films arriving on the streaming platform this week too — think Django Unchained, the Underworld series, and Back to the Future.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix this week of May 1.

The Last Kingdom: Season 4 (Netflix series streaming 4/26)

This action-packed period drama returns for a fourth season on Netflix this week. With King Alfred dead and his son ascended to the throne, Uhtred is free to reclaim his birthright but first, he’s got to face down an uncle who wants him dead and protect Alfred’s vision of a united England from Danish invaders, scheming lords, and mercenaries who see weakness in Wessex’s new king.

Hollywood (Netflix series streaming 5/1)

Ryan Murphy gives us a decadent, revisionist history of Hollywood full of old glam and refreshingly new storytelling. The loose premise of the show follows tinsel town after World War II, as a bunch of actors, directors, and screenwriters fight against the prejudice of the time to get a film made. It’s a little too starry-eyed to carry any weight — queer romances and women of color in starring roles would never fly back then, though they do here — but it’s pretty to look at.

Here’s a full list of what’s been added in the last week:

Justin Timberlake Shares A Pandemic-Themed Version Of The Classic ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ Meme

There truly is a meme for every occasions, and in fact, some of them are tied to specific occasions. For example, there’s the Mean Girls meme that rears its head every October 3, and around that same time of year, Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” often gets a mention. Another date-specific meme has been active lately as well, and its star, Justin Timberlake, has participated in the best way possible.

As April comes to an end every year, the internet starts referencing the NSYNC hit “It’s Gonna Be Me,” because the way Timberlake sings the titular lyric, it sounds like he’s saying, “It’s gonna be May.” Just before April wrapped up last night, Timberlake shared an appropriately pandemic-themed version of the meme: A photo of himself from the NSYNC era had a face mask Photoshopped in and is captioned with the classic line. Timberlake wrote in his post, “Spring Summer 2020. Thanks for this, Internet.”

Although the coronavirus pandemic has put a damper on just about everything, Timberlake has had a prosperous 2020 so far. He has spent most of the year promoting his Trolls World Tour soundtrack, which came out in March and features collaborations with SZA, Anderson .Paak, and others.

Disney+ Is Getting An Old School ‘Star Wars’ Makeover For ‘Star Wars Day’

This coming Monday is May 4, a.k.a. May the 4th Be With You, a.k.a. Star Wars Day, a.k.a. an excuse to listen to “Duel of the Fates” on a loop (not that you need one). To celebrate, Disney+ is releasing The Rise of Skywalker, months before it was expected to come out on the streaming service, as well as the premiere of the Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian documentary series and The Clone Wars series finale. And as a neat nod to the franchise’s past, the Disney+ launch page has undergone an old school makeover featuring an illustration of C-3PO and R2-D2 from concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. (If you’re unfamiliar with McQuarrie, he helped define the look of the Star Wars universe and is probably the franchise’s second most important visionary, after George Lucas.)

The following Star Wars titles will have updated artwork on May 4, as well.

Skywalker Saga
Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

What/If

1 season, 10 episodes | IMDb: 6.4/10

Renee Zellweger turns on the melodrama for this 10-episode anthology series about a San Francisco billionaire and the young scientist whose company she funds. Zellweger plays Anne Montgomery, a high-profile member of San Francisco’s elite upper class. She has plenty of money and the attitude to back it up. Jane Levy plays a wunderkind named Lisa, whose promising medical company is broke and needs a helping hand from Anne, who agrees, but her money comes with a price. If daytime soaps are your thing, you’ll probably love this one.

Riverdale

3 seasons, 57 episodes | IMDb: 7.4/10

Riverdale is a dark teen comedy based on characters from the Archie comics. It mixes in elements of a conventional teen drama — romance, small-town life, and the high-school ecosystem — with a compelling, adult murder mystery. The series takes place in a small-town with a 1950s vibe (despite being firmly set in the present) where a high-school teenager is found dead under mysterious circumstances that implicate much of the community as suspects. Riverdale is powered not just by the mystery, but by characters who are instantly likable (Betty, Veronica, and Jughead are all standouts) and is easy to invest in. The mystery is so incredibly intriguing that it’s almost impossible not to get wrapped up in it as the storyline guides us through numerous red herrings. It’s a madly addictive series, occasionally campy, and just self-aware enough not to take itself too seriously.

Netflix

You

2 seasons, 20 episodes | IMDb: 7.9/10

Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley returns as a scumbag we can’t help but swoon over in this Lifetime drama that’s now been handed off to the streaming platform. Badgley plays Joe Goldberg, a seemingly-sweet guy who works at a bookshop in the city and courts a beautiful blonde named Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Unfortunately, that’s where the rom-com portion of this thriller ends. You see, Joe’s “courting” includes stalking the object of his affections, breaking into her apartment, holding her boyfriend hostage, and peeping in on her most intimate of moments. And that’s only in the first episode. If anything, this show is proof that the modern dating world can be a terrifying hellscape.

Fox

Glee

6 seasons, 121 episodes | IMDb: 6.8/10

Ryan Murphy’s musical coming-of-age drama checks all the boxes of a great guilty pleasure. There are song and dance, teenage angst and hormones, betrayal, bullying, witty one-liners, and Jane Lynch in a tracksuit. The show follows a group of high schoolers who join their defunct Glee club, help it to rise from the ashes, and form complicated bonds along the way. Everything is heightened here, and Murphy makes sure to include any and all issues a teen could possibly face in their school career, so expect plenty of rivalries and teen pregnancies and even one teen stripping on the side to make a little money.

ABC

Scandal

7 seasons, 124 episodes | IMDb: 7.8/10

Shonda Rhimes’ political thriller starring Kerry Washington started its run strong, focusing on a black woman in power who served as a fixer for some of the most corrupt, questionable politicians on Capitol Hill. As the seasons went on, Olivia Pope confronted more and more drama — her ex lover-turned-president-of-the-United-States still had the hots for her and made a show of it often, she was surrounded by liars and manipulators at her job, she fell for a secret agent spying on her under her estranged father’s orders, she was kidnapped and held hostage. All of that happened before the show’s final season, which had to wrap up all of these plot lines in a satisfying manner. For the most part, it did, and we’ll always remember the melodrama and inhumanly long monologues that the series delivered.

Netflix

Love Is Blind

1 season, 11 episodes | IMDb: 6.0/10

UPROXX dubbed this the next unconscionably watchable reality dating show and all you need to do is watch the first 10 minutes of this thing to see why. The series is one giant social experiment, done in the view of perfectly-staged cameras for our own entertainment. It asks the question: can you find love without ever meeting your prospective partner face-to-face. Singles go through a week of speed dating, simply chatting to each other through a divider that prevents them from seeing or touching their date. They then propose, are whisked away to Mexico, and have a few more weeks to decide if what they’ve found on the show is actually sustainable. You’ll have to watch to get the answer to that question.

CW

Gossip Girl

6 seasons, 121 episodes | IMDb: 7.4/10

Teen dramas are notoriously difficult to pull off. There’s an unwritten recipe that exists detailing the perfect amount of angst, triviality, romance, and existentialism needed to make a show about the inner workings of high school interesting and enjoyable without being over-the-top and camp. Gossip Girl often walked that fine line, giving us characters to root for (Serena van der Woodsen, Dan Humphrey) and characters we loved to hate (Chuck Bass). The storylines could be trite, sometimes filled with glaring potholes, and eye-roll inducing, but watching this cast enact the lives of those elite Upper East Siders, the ones completely removed from the realities of everyday life, more worried about galas, balls, charity functions, and business takeovers — well, that’s a form of escapism worth anyone’s time.

Netflix

Nailed It

3 seasons, 19 episodes | IMDb: 7.4/10

Normally, a baking competition like The Great British Bakeoff would make this list, but it turns out Netflix’s own spin on the pastry competition format is just as addictive, for different reasons. Nicole Byer hosts this so-bad-it’s-good series about home cooks who can’t, well, cook, taking on timed baking competitions and presenting their dishes to a panel of judges. Watching these hopeless chefs flounder is most of the fun here.

CW

Jane The Virgin

5 seasons, 100 episodes | IMDb: 7.8/10

Based on a Spanish telenovela, Jane the Virgin plays more like a brilliant but genial satire of conventional Latin TV staple. Gina Rodriguez plays the virgin here, who is impregnated through an accidental artificial insemination. Matters are complicated, however, because she has to break the news of her pregnancy to her deeply religious family, as well as her fiancé, with whom she has never had sex. Jane also develops feelings for another man who just so happens to be the baby’s father. It sounds like a premise that could not sustain itself beyond five episodes, but the writing is so good, and the characters so delightful that Jane never gets bogged down by its crazier storylines. It’s a genuinely delightful, heartwarming show, and Gina Rodriguez lights up the screen every second she is on it.

FX

American Horror Story

8 seasons, 106 episodes | IMDb: 8.1/10

Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology on FX is an unpredictable tour-de-force that, when it sticks its landing, is one of the best shows on TV. The series chronicles truly terrifying, mind-warping plots across multiple seasons, connecting some, ignoring others. What grounds these outrageous storylines involving haunted hotels, murder houses, insane asylums, cults, and covens is the cast, most notably Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters. Murphy relies on their visceral portrayals of individuals unhinged to sell this wacky, nightmare-inducing rollercoaster, and sell they do.
