The First Reactions To Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ Are Torn On Whether It’s A ‘Masterwork’ Or A Passion Project Gone ‘Horribly Wrong’

megalopolis
American Zoetrope

Every parent tells their child to “dream big!” at one point in their life, which is probably what Francis Ford Coppola was thinking when he first started dreaming up Megalopolis. The star-studded passion project was years in the making, and the director even funded the $120 million (!!!!!) flick himself, so he really must believe in it, even if nobody else seems to.

The larger-than-life epic premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, and the audience reactions are quite frankly all over the place. Some are loving the star-studded fable, while others are… confused? Hurt? Offended? Who knows! Here’s the plot synopsis to prepare you:

Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she believes humanity deserves.

Make sense? It’s fine if not. It doesn’t seem like it did to anyone else either. Here’s what critics are saying.

Damon Wise for Deadline on the “modern masterwork”:

Megalopolis represents a rare kind of event movie that reinvents the possibilities of cinema to the extent that, halfway through, there’s a very audacious gimmick that tears down the fourth wall in ways younger filmmakers can only dream of. Coppola breaks many of the cardinal rules of filmmaking in the film’s 138 minutes but it upholds the most important one: it is never, ever boring, and it will inspire just as many artists as the audiences it will alienate.

David Ehrlich for IndieWire:

With Megalopolis, he crams 85 years worth of artistic reverence and romantic love into a clunky, garish, and transcendently sincere manifesto about the role of an artist at the end of an empire. It doesn’t just speak to Coppola’s philosophy, it embodies it to its bones. To quote one of the sharper non-sequiturs from a script that’s swimming in them: “When we leap into the unknown, we prove that we are free.”

Richard Lawson for Vanity Fair on the passion project gone “horribly wrong”:

Megalopolis is too confused a film to make a truly odious or dangerous point. This is the junkiest of junk-drawer movies, a slapped together hash of Coppola’s many disparate inspirations.

Peter Debruge for Variety:

Megalopolis is anything but lazy, and while so many of the ideas don’t pan out as planned, this is the kind of late-career statement devotees wanted from the maverick, who never lost his faith in cinema. But now that he’s built it, will they come?

Bilge Ebiri for Vulture:

There is nothing in Megalopolis that feels like something out of a “normal” movie. It has its own logic and cadence and vernacular. The characters speak in archaic phrases and words, mixing shards of Shakespeare, Ovid, and at one point straight-up Latin. Some characters speak in rhyme, others just in high-minded prose that feels like maybe it should be in verse. At one point, Adam Driver does the entire “To be or not to be” soliloquy from Hamlet. Why? I’m not exactly sure. But it sure sounds good.

David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter:

Does all this hang together as a narrative? Not entirely, and it’s not likely to go down as one of the more incisive responses to our bitterly polarized political landscape. Nor does it ever quite settle on a uniform tone, frequently coming off as both earnest and silly. But it’s never bland, being far too extravagant for that. Who else among contemporary filmmakers is working on this kind of scale anymore, outside of tentpoles?

The film screened for critics in Cannes at an IMAX theater, incorporating a brief live interlude, which I won’t spoil, other than to say it left people wondering if the element will be a part of regular commercial showings. Maybe it’s a tad gimmicky, but it suggests that Coppola sees Megalopolis as an event movie. Given what will likely be a fairly narrow appeal that’s perhaps unrealistic. But if this ends up being the distinguished 85-year-old director’s swan song, at least he’s capping his career with a risk-taking flourish.

Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian:

Certainly a Coppola failure is a whole lot more interesting than the functional successes of lesser directors – the middleweights who aim low and just about hit the target’s bottom rim. But for me this is a passion project without passion: a bloated, boring and bafflingly shallow film, full of high-school-valedictorian verities about humanity’s future. It’s simultaneously hyperactive and lifeless, lumbered with some terrible acting and uninteresting, inexpensive-looking VFX work which achieves neither the texture of analogue reality nor a fully radical, digital reinvention of existence.

Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman. It does not have a release date yet, but whenever it is, it’s not soon enough

Did You Want More ‘Shōgun’? Because You’re Going To Get Some Heaping Helpings Of ‘Shōgun’

Shogun
FX

Only a few days ago, the world learned that Shōgun star Hiroyuki Sanada had signed on to continue his role as Lord Toranaga for more of James Clavell’s Asian saga on FX. This was the decisive step, it seemed, for FX to soon pull the trigger on announcing a series renewal. And would John Blackthorne’s TV-invisible dong return for more, too? The presence of Cosmo Jarvis was still apparently undecided, although Deadline reported at the time that more “deals are being finalized,” and the final pieces must have tome together.

In a press release, FX has announced that “FX, Hulu and the Estate of James Clavell are working to extend the critically acclaimed global hit drama Shōgun, moving forward to develop the saga with two additional seasons of the drama series.” Two more seasons, you say? FX emphasized, “The Story and Characters are Intended to Continue the Saga That Will Likely Yield Two Additional Seasons of the Drama Series.”

From there, we still do not definitively know if Cosmo Jarvis has signed his name to the roster, but you can’t really continue this series without followup on Toranaga torching Blackthorne’s ship because, as Sanada previously told USA Today, “Blackthorne is useful to Toranaga, who wants to keep him in Japan and not let him go back to England.” And now, we wait.

Are Cardi B & Offset Still Married?

Cardi B and Offset
Getty Image

If you’ve been a longtime fan of Cardi B, you’d be forgiven for being a little confused about her relationship status. After all, she and (ex?)husband Offset have gone back and forth quite a few times over the last six years. Most recently, it seemed their “off-again-on-again” love affair was back in the former stage, particularly after Cardi declared in December that she’s “been single for a minute.” However, the couple spent Christmas together and were seen pretty recently together at a Met Gala after-party. So, what exactly is the deal? Are Cardi B and Offset still married?

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Cardi remained coy about the situation, but her comments did shed some light on it. “The part I love is that we really like each other, like a support system. We’re really both each other’s cheerleader. I don’t really like talking to people. I’m not as social. If I want something from somebody, he’ll be the one that will talk. Because I don’t like asking.”

However, she said of contemplating an official, final divorce, “It’s not even about love. We’re best friends. And it’s like, ‘OK. Well, there was a time that I didn’t have a best friend, or I didn’t have a support system.’ It’s not even about ‘How do you leave a partner?’ How do you stop talking to your best friend?”

So, that seems to be a “yes,” they are still married by all appearances, although like any couple, they’ve had their challenges. And if they’re ever not, they still seem to be bonded by a mutual appreciation and their two kids, who’ll keep them in proximity for a while.

When Will ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Stream On Max?

Godzilla X Kong The New Empire
Warner Bros

It’s never a bad time to check in with your old friends, especially if they’ve had a pretty busy year. So what have our good monster pals Godzilla and Kong up to? A lot!

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hit theaters in March and featured the two large beings teaming up against an even larger being. Who would have thought! If you didn’t get a chance to check it out on the big screen, you’re in luck.

As for right now, the only way to see our good monster pals is to buy or rent the digital edition, which is currently available on Prime Video, AppleTV, and Vudu. The digital release also features a number of bonus features so you can spend even more time in the monsterverse.

If you’re looking to stream the movie, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. While there is no exact release date for the monster movie, the movie will find a home on Max. Like previous Warner Bros movies, it should arrive roughly two months after its initial theatrical release.

Obviously, things can change, but it seems likely that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be streaming by the end of June. Here is the official synopsis:

This latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

As for the other Zilly movies, you can stream 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters currently on Max. Kong is also hanging out over there as well.

The Most Exciting New Theme Park Ride Of The Year Is Shrek’s Toilet Slide At Universal Orlando

shrek
dreamworks

Universal Orlando is the home of many incredible rides, including E.T. Adventure, The Simpsons Ride, and over in Universal Islands of Adventure, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. But the theme park has really outdone itself with its latest attraction: the Shrek toilet slide.

DreamWorks Land opens in Universal Studios Florida next month, and with it comes “Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres.” The “ogre-sized” play area features four slides, wet play areas, and, according to Universal, “a playground where guests can climb, bounce, and splash around, as well as venture into Shrek’s outhouse.” What will lil’ ones find in Shrek’s outhouse? A toilet slide, and when they slide down, they “might hear just a little surprise,” Universal Creative creative director Dean Orion teased in a video shared by USA Today.

If that means what I think it means, the outhouse slide will end with a fart noise. I’m not a parent, but this is making me want a kid. Yeah yeah, the wonder of life or whatever, but I mostly want to take them to Shrek’s toilet.

DreamWorks Land, which also features a Shrek meet and greet, a Trolls-themed “Trollercoaster,” and Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp, officially opens June 14 at Universal Studios Florida.

Brendan Paul, Diddy’s Alleged Drug ‘Mule,’ Reportedly Avoids Jail Time By Accepting A Plea Deal

Diddy November 2023
Getty Image

In late March, Diddy’s Los Angeles and Miami residences were raided by Homeland Security in connection with a federal sex trafficking investigation, which was the latest in a long string of troubling allegations and lawsuits involving Diddy.

Around the same time, Rolling Stone reported that 25-year-old Brendan Paul, described as Diddy’s drug “mule,” had been arrested in Miami and charged with cocaine and marijuana possession. Paul had been named in a bombshell lawsuit filed by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones alleging Paul acquired and distributed drugs and guns in association with Diddy.

On Thursday, May 16, TMZ reported that Paul accepted a plea deal and will avoid any jail time.

“Brendan accepted the prosecutor’s offer to permit his entry into the diversion program which, after completion, the case against him will be dismissed in its entirety,” Brian Bieber, Paul’s attorney, told TMZ.

Additionally, an unnamed representative for the Miami-Dade State Attorney confirmed to TMZ that Paul “has enrolled in a drug diversion program, which should last about six months,” and Paul will not have to serve in jail or probation if he “completes the course without issue.”

This stretch of relentless headlines surrounding Diddy began last November when Cassie filed a lengthy lawsuit alleging physical and mental abuse and rape. Diddy immediately settled with Cassie but maintained his innocence.

Kevin Costner Sounds Steamed About Being Blamed For His ‘Yellowstone’ Departure By ‘Those F*cking Guys’

Yellowstone Kevin Costner John Dutton
Paramount

Kevin Costner recently admitted that he wanted to return for the final Yellowstone episodes, but that does not seem too likely. The fact that Taylor Sheridan finally commented on the subject speaks some finality on the issue, and although Sheridan told Hollywood Reporter, “I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one,” the Paramount TV king did declare, “He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it.”

Additionally, Sheridan promised that John Dutton wouldn’t die in “a f*ck-you car crash,” but he also pointed out that he didn’t make the rules about scheduling matters, and it was out of his hands other than to create content, and “[m]y opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered.” Costner, for his part, recently spoke to Deadline ahead of his new directorial effort, Horizon, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. And although he doesn’t want to get distracted by “the Yellowstone thing,” it’s clear that he’s not thrilled about having fingers pointed at him by “those f*cking guys”:

“I don’t want to get down in the gutter with the Yellowstone thing but what I’m telling you is straight up. I have taken a beating from those f*cking guys and I know a lot of times where it’s coming from. I just elected not to get into that. But if you know me well enough, I made Yellowstone the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong. I did not initiate any of those things. They did. They were doing a tap dance and this poor guy was also having to write so much. And I don’t know why they didn’t stick up for me.”

Costner also explained why he hasn’t unloaded on the topic until now:

“You asked me the question, I’m going to answer it. I don’t do press outside my movies. I don’t live in the press, in between. Now I’m promoting my movie. I could say ‘no comment’ all the way through. I won’t say my life is fair game or that any questions are fair game, but this is a realistic question. I will address it. They should have known that there was going to be an opportunity for me to say something. I didn’t have to answer the slings and arrows over the last year and a half, because I’ve just been busy working.”

Enough said? For the moment, at least, that’s what Costner has offered, and Horizon will debut out of competition on Sunday, May 19. Hollywood Reporter has revealed that it’s already sold in the French market while Warner Bros. “is betting big” on the saga’s first two chapters, which will release on June 28 and August 16 in the U.S.

‘Shōgun’ Star Hiroyuki Sanada Has An (Accurate) Theory On Why Keanu Reeves ‘Became That Big’ After ‘John Wick’ Exploded

reeves 47 ronin
Universal

Everyone who works with Keanu Reeves says the same thing: he is the best person to ever happen to the world (in so many words). So it’s not surprising that another one of Reeves’ co-stars confirmed what we all know.

Reeves first worked with Shōgun‘s Hiroyuki Sanada on 2013’s fantasy drama 47 Ronin. He was already a well-known actor at that point, but when the two reunited a decade later for John Wick Chapter 4, Sanada was relieved to learn that all of that Wick fame hadn’t gone to his head.

“[Keanu] was so humble, very kind to others but very hard on himself,” Sanada told People. “Ten years later, when I met him again for John Wick [Chapter 4], he hadn’t changed. He was even more of a success, but his humbleness and kindness to others hadn’t changed.”

It appears that fame only make Reeves want to be a better actor, no matter how big his celebrity reach became.”That’s why he became that big, I thought,” Sanada explained. “He’s always trying to do his best: aim higher, move forward. It’s a great energy.” It’s no surprise that Reeves is in fact a Virgo.

Such “a great energy” is just another reason that Reeves and Sandra Bullock should reunite for a third Speed. Also, it should be called Sp33d.

Meanwhile, you can catch Sanada in Shōgun, which was reportedly renewed for a second go around.

Will Zayn Go On Tour For His ‘Room Under The Stairs’ Album?

Zayn April 2024
Getty Image

Zayn is offering up a fresh sound and more intimate perspective with Room Under The Stairs, his fourth solo studio album due out on Friday, May 17. In February, Rolling Stone reported that the former One Direction star co-produced the album with “one of Nashville’s most accomplished and in-demand producers” Dave Cobb (Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton, Lady Gaga) to “explore new sonic territory and lean into pairing his unmistakable vocals with live instrumentation” to reflect his day-to-day living in rural Pennsylvania.

Will fans have the opportunity to hear Zayn’s country-leaning tone atop live instrumentation in concert?

Will Zayn Go On Tour For His Room Under The Stairs Album?

As of this writing, Zayn has not announced a tour. However, Zayn will perform a one-night-only Room Under The Stairs concert at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London on May 17, and the seemingly high probability of Zayn staging a full-blown headlining tour in support of the album was addressed within a newly published Nylon cover story, as excerpted below.

“There are other things Zayn is willing to leave the compound for. Like going on his first tour since his One Direction days, something that once seemed about as likely as an Oasis reunion. The crippling anxiety Zayn previously cited as a reason for avoiding the stage has gotten easier with time. ‘I’ve definitely learned to communicate my feelings in a way better manner. I can articulate myself in a way better sense than I could six, seven years ago,’ he says. But it’s also what the new songs deserve. ‘This type of music that I’m making just feels like the type of music I would perform. It makes sense in my mind.”

With his other albums, a tour would have required too much of a production: splashy visuals, backup dancers. (If you’re going to perform a banger like ‘Like I Would,’ somebody should be dancing, and it certainly wasn’t going to be Zayn.) He’s excited about the idea of reimagining some songs from other albums and bringing them into this new sound. ‘I haven’t been on stage for such a long time, I have a bit of a hunger for it. I feel like I have something to give again,’ he says. ‘I just didn’t want to be there before. Who wants to come watch a person that doesn’t want to be stuck there?”

Zayn’s vision for his live show is a lot like the environment he made these songs in: a small band to back him up, a rug on the floor, a stool to sit on, maybe a guitar for himself, and a mic. ‘Not too many fancy tricks,’ he says.”

Room Under The Stairs is out 5/17 via Mercury/Republic. Find more information here.
