The ‘Saved By The Bell’ And ‘Punky Brewster’ Reboot Trailers Offer First Looks At New Returns

We’re still a few months out from the release of Peacock, NBC’s splashy new streamer, which, when it arrives, will feature not only favorites like The Office and Parks and Recreation but plenty of new content, available exclusive to them. On Wednesday, as per Entertainment Weekly, they dropped a glut of trailers, among them two of their big reboots: Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster.

The Saved by the Bell ad offers our first look at 2020 Bayside High School, and at its two main returning regulars: Mario Lopez’s A.C. Slater and Elizabeth Berkley’s Jessie Spano. Lopez looks frighteningly the same, missing only the mullet, which slightly takes the edge off the part where Jessie says, “Can you believe that was 30 years ago?” (Actually, it’s 31 years ago — 32 if you count its original incarnation as the Hayley Mills-led Good Morning, Miss Bliss.)

In any case, Lopez, now a gym teacher at his old haunt, gets the majority of the screentime, though he has to share it with a bevy of new teens who are up to…well, not no good, but some family-friendly hijinks all the same. At one point he tries to bond with them, reminiscing about fighting with his friends over girls — only to then tell one of them, “Oh, that was actually your dad!” He then turns to the other, saying, “Over your mom!” So the only thing that’s changed, really, is his age.

Meanwhile, it’s been 34 years since Soleil Moon Frye played Punky Brewster, who, from 1984 to 1986, was a young girl being raised by a foster father (Police Academy stalwart George Gaynes). What’s she up to now? According to the new version, she’s a mom of three, with a husband in the form of Freddie Prinze Jr. But she’s still wearing two different colors of shoes.

Saved by the Bell had to halt production due to the pandemic, though NBC still has confidence it will make its way onto their streaming coffers in 2020. Meanwhile, there’s no confirmed release date for Punky Brewster. Peacock also released trailers for Psych 2 and Angelyne, featuring a blonde, post-Shameless Emma Rossum. Peacock launches on July 15.

Lindsay Lohan Would Love To Star In A ‘Mean Girls 2’

Lindsay Lohan appears to be making a concentrated attempt at a comeback. She’s been working on her er first new music in 12 years. Recently she mentioned another dream project that could put her back on top: Perhaps someone would like to make arguably her greatest screen triumph, Mean Girls? (No diss on her Parent Trap remake, nor her very good turn in Robert Altman’s swan song, Prairie Home Companion, as Meryl Streep’s daughter.)

This comes from Entertainment Weekly, who caught Lohan’s appearance on the quarantined version of Lights Out with David Spade. Over one of those low-res, splotchy webcam chats that have become de rigueur in our pandemic present, Lohan opened up about her dreams for a future once this all blows over.

“I should probably get back to doing movies at some point,” she told her host. “I think I was hanging on to [Mean Girls] for a really long time. I wanted to come back with a Mean Girls 2. To work with Tina [Fey], and the whole crew again, and [director] Mark Waters. That was really what I wanted. I was excited to do that.”

She did cautiously add, though, that “that’s all in their hands, really. So that would definitely be an exciting thing.”

This is all a way of saying this is a long shot, and that there are currently no plans by Fey and company to catch up with Team Mean Girls. In fact, there’s already another Mean Girls movie in the works, based on the Broadway musical adaptation,

You can watch her entire chat with Spade.

Promoter Bob Arum Is Interested In Bringing Boxing To WWE’s Performance Center

In a major win for combat sports, WWE was deemed essential business by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis earlier this week, providing a slew of sports organizations the opportunity to hold events without a live crowd despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That opened the door for WWE to resume holding live shows from the Performance Center in Orlando, and positioned others sports to potentially follow suit.

It was reported that UFC president Dana White is planning a mega event slated for May 9, and while he wouldn’t name a location, it was naturally floated that Florida is now an option. You can also add boxing promoter Bob Arum to the list of people interested in not only bringing fights to Florida, but potentially even holding an event from WWE’s Performance Center itself. Arum, however, isn’t interested in getting events up and running quite so soon.

“We’re very close with Vince [McMahon] and the WWE. So let’s see, but we’re still not talking before June,” Arum said, per ESPN. “You cannot open it and have athletes compete against each other with referees, the judges, with camera people, unless you can ensure that it’s safe, and the only way you can ensure that it’s safe is with testing. It comes down to testing.”

Despite the potential to hold events from WWE’s training grounds, Arum isn’t as keen on holding bigger fights, such as the much-anticipated Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury trilogy bout slated for this summer. That fight has been postponed and yet to be rescheduled, but according to Arum, it likely won’t be contested without an audience.

“Those are either going to have to wait till you have spectators, or if the fighters get antsy, they will have to deal with an adjustment in their purses because you will have cut off an important revenue source from the event,” he said.

When can fans expect to be back in the stands? Arum projects boxing will return with live audiences for the last “three months” of 2020. That’s at least how he’s calculating it for now.
