Cassandra Jenkins Shares Her New Song ‘Only One’ And Announces Her Third Album, ‘My Light, My Destroyer’

Cassandra Jenkins finds herself stuck in her ways. Tonight (April 16), the New York native has shared her new single, “Only One,” on which, she finds herself returning to a love that feels safe.

Though this love feels familiar and comfortable to her, there may be more out there for Jenkins. But as the age-old adage holds, old habits die hard.

“It’s about a Groundhog Day effect, finding yourself in the same situation over and over again, not knowing how to get out of that loop—and in some sense, an unwillingness to break a cycle because you’re blinded by your circumstances,” said Jenkins of the song in a statement.

In the video, Jenkins is seen in New York City, going about the neighborhoods alone, as she reflects on love. In addition to the single, Jenkins has announced her new album, My Light, My Destroyer, which is due for release this summer.

You can see the video for “Only One” above and the My Light, My Destroyer cover art and tracklist below.

The Lakers Survived A Monster Night By Zion Williamson To Earn The 7-Seed In The West

The Los Angeles Lakers are heading to the playoffs. On Tuesday night, L.A. went to New Orleans to play a Pelicans team that they frequently blew out this season, and while they were able to come out on top 110-106, things were far more tense than usual thanks to one of the best performances of Zion Williamson’s career.

Los Angeles led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter before New Orleans started to chip away. By the time the frame came to an end, the Pelicans got it down to seven points, and continued to chip away for much of the fourth quarter thanks to the play of Williamson, who ended the night with 40 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal.

New Orleans was able to get things tied at 95 with 3:19 left in the game, but unfortunately, disaster struck. Williamson scored the basket that leveled things, but in the process, he suffered an injury that forced him to go to the locker room and not return to the game.

From there, the Lakers were able to create just enough breathing room, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis scoring 10 of the 15 points they scored to close out the game. On the night, every member of the Los Angeles starting five reached double-figure scoring, with James leading the way. In his latest big game against the Pelicans this season, James went for 23 points with nine rebounds, nine assists, three steals, and two blocks, while Davis had 20 points with 15 rebounds and three blocks. Outside of Williamson, no one on the Pelicans scored more than 12 points, although six players managed to hit double-digit scoring.

With the win, Los Angeles earned the 7-seed and a matchup with the Denver Nuggets. The two teams met in the Western Conference Finals last year, where the Nuggets beat them in four games en route to an appearance in the NBA Finals.

New Orleans will now sit and wait to see what’s next. The team will host the final Play-In Tournament game in the Western Conference against the winner of the 9-10 game between the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors. Whichever team wins that game will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 1-8 matchup in the West.

Strand Of Oaks is back. Today (April 16), Strand Of Oaks — which is the musical project of Tim Showalter — announced its eighth studio album, Miracle Focus. Ahead of the album, Strand Of Oaks has shared the single “Party At The Monster Lake.”

The song marks a departure from Strand Of Oaks’ more melancholy works, and signifies a celebration of the weirdness of life, and the misfits who make the magical moments happen.

In the accompanying video, directed by Ruud Gielen, a father and son duo, dressed as pandas, enjoy a day out and about on the town, not caring what anyone else thinks.

“When Tim asks to embody having the best time of your life on video,” said Gielen in a statement. “There is only one way to go, do it while making memories with loved ones. ‘Party at Monster Lake’ feels like how we want to relive our memories. Spiritualized Will Re-Release ‘Songs In A&E’ On Vinyl To Complete ‘The Spaceman Reissue Program’

SPIRITUALIZED GRID
Nick Waplington

Spiritualized is nearly finished with their Spaceman Reissue Program. This summer, the English rock band will re-release their sixth album, Songs In A&E.

The album was first released in 2008, however, writing, recording, and production was well underway as early as 2005. In 2005, Spiritualized member Jason Pierce, better known as J. Spaceman, was rushed to the hospital with double pneumonia. Finishing the record played a big role in Spaceman’s recovery process. At the time of his release from the infirmary, Spaceman weighed just 85 pounds at 5’10.”

Spaceman would later return to the stage with Spiritualized guitarist Tony Foster at a Daniel Johnston tribute show in London.

“I was underweight and fragile and this was a gentle way of getting back on stage,” said Spaceman in a statement. “It wasn’t my show for a start, and it was a small band, just myself on acoustic and Tony on a Fender Rhodes but it turned out to be really beautiful. Originally it was just going to be the two of us, but we ended up getting the strings and the girls’ choir and because it worked, it led to other things.”

Songs In A&E‘s re-release announcement comes with the videos for “Soul On Fire” and “You Lie You Cheat.”

Woman’s response to being called a ‘natural beauty’ has other women applauding

A woman named Tallulah Rose recently went viral after sharing a well-intentioned, but oh-so misinformed compliment men tend to give her. It left a lot of other women nodding in agreement, because it revealed what still seems to be a common beauty myth.

“I actually just, like, don’t understand men and how their brain works sometimes because today I was just minding my own business when this guy comes up to me and is like ‘you are so elegant, you are such a natural beauty,'” she said in the clip.

Of course, Rose is positive any other woman would instantly know that the beauty men are responding to is anything but natural.

“I think a woman can take one look at me and be like … this is fake,” she said before breaking down the costs of enhancements she’s made.

“My jawline cost $10,000, okay? My lips are clearly done. My hair is $2000, my lashes are $200 every two weeks.”

jawline cosmetic surgery, natural cosmetic procedures

She then lifted her bangs to show a wrinkle-less forehead and immovable eyebrows, thanks to Botox or some other kind of anti-wrinkle injection. Plus, she has “enough makeup on to season a f***ing wok.”

Still, men will wistfully tell her “ ‘they don’t make them like you do these days.” to which Rose quipped, “yes they do with a needle and a scalpel!”

plastic surgery, cosmetic procedures

Since sharing this hot take, Rose’s video has garnered over 12 million views on TikTok and has been shared across several platforms. Most of the comments came from women who have had their own fair share of this experience.

Some were just as hilarious as the original video.

“My husband was like ‘please never get Botox’ If I could raise my eyebrows at him I would have,” one person wrote.

Another added, ““I’ve had male friends remark how I don’t wear heavy makeup like other girls. I spend at least 30 mins a day putting my face on.”

Over on X, people were just refreshed by Rose’s honesty.

Rose told news.com.au that many men “genuinely can’t tell the difference between a natural woman and a woman that has had cosmetic surgery,” primarily due to seeing celebrities who have had work done and assuming that’s the standard. She’ll often ask male friends to name a celebrity crush, and “they’ll name someone that has clearly had work done but they are just quite clueless to it.”

And that is really where the important conversation comes in. Unrealistic beauty standards aren’t necessarily a new issue. But now the paradox of cosmetic procedures being stigmatized while at the same time not even acknowledged in much of what is touted as natural beauty puts women in an impossible position. They can’t naturally live up to these expectations, and then are labeled as fake if they do make efforts to look enhanced (which is the new normal…make it make sense).

Point is: Praising a woman for her “natural beauty” might be intended as a compliment. But for many, it’s neither true, nor a compliment.

Dad and son had no idea their pet octopus would soon hatch 50 eggs. Cue wholesome chaos.

What started as a wholesome fatherson bonding activity quickly became a full blown TikTok sensation, all thanks to one octopus. Actually…make that fifty octopuses.

Cameron Clifford of Edmond, Oklahoma, had promised to get his cephalopod-obsessed 9-year old Cal their very own pet octopus. After making a call to a local aquarium, Clifford made good on that promise, and a California two-spot (or bimac) octopus, which they would name Terrance, arrived via mail order. Cue Cal’s instant tears of joy.

Only, in hindsight, they might have wanted to name him Teresa instead, because only two months later, Terrance’s already too-small tank was filled with dozens of eggs.

“We kind of estimate there was about between 40 and 70 eggs but every one that hatched, that I saw, I was able to catch and contain. It was exactly 50,” Clifford told Good Morning America.

As Clifford explains in one TikTok video (using a posh british voice for the narration, making it even more National Geographic-esque), once female bimac octopuses lay eggs, that usually signals the end of their life cycle, and they stop taking care of themselves in order to protect their young.

@doctoktopus Terrance signals the end of her life-cyxle, but we have no idea how mich time we have left wirh her. #octopus #marinebiology #shrimpdaddy #saltwateraquarium #fyp #cephalopod #petoctopus #aquarium #octomom #biology #mom ♬ Heartbeats – Remastered 2023 – José González

So, even though Terrance (who was eventually renamed Terry) could recognize Clifford and Cal, nothing could coax her out of her cave after the eggs were laid. However, latching onto their arms remained one of her favorite pastimes.

Terrance’s eggs were at first deemed infertile by several experts that Clifford talked to, which made her upcoming demise all the more tragic. When the unexpected miracle finally did happen, Clifford begged for other aquariums in his area to take the hatchlings. They all declined.

So naturally, he reached out to TikTok. He shared the previously private videos documenting their journey, including the insane saga of capturing each newly hatched octopus and putting it in its own incubated container, so that they wouldn’t eat each other. The Clifford home honestly became a bona fide marine biologist training center. Only with exponentially more puns.

Behold, “Clamsterdam”:

Speaking of puns, viewers also helped give each of the octo-babies. Some examples include InverteBrett, Swim Shady, Bill Nye the Octopi, Sea-yonce and Jay-Sea…you get the picture.

Luckily, after Clifford’s account went mega viral, other aquariums, universities and research facilities agreed to give them homes, per USA Today.

Clifford might be out thousands of dollars—and hours—on his impromptu project, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world.

“As far as regrets, there’s so many,” he told USA Today. “I wish I wouldn’t have opened that valve that way and dumped all that dirty seawater onto my kids’ white carpet. That’s certainly a regret. But overall, no, it’s been an absolutely fun experience, not just for me, but also for my kids.”

And in case you’re wondering: Yes, Terrence is still, miraculously, alive. Though she is expected to die in the next several weeks, the Cliffords are more than prepared to be surprised. Again.

Though Clifford attests that one should probably refrain from have an octopus for a pet, he tells his followers that “you will learn a lot about yourself” by taking care of one.

“There’s always some valve or seal that’s not completely closed, and your storm resistant carpet isn’t rated for gallons and gallons of seawater. You’ll learn that seawater and electricity don’t always get along. You will learn new things and meet incredible people and will learn that wildlife is magnificent. But most of all, you’ll learn to love a not-so-tiny octopus like Terrance.”

Follow along on more of Clifford and Cal’s octopus adventures on TikTok.

Mom has the most hilarious response to her daughter’s gay friend asking to sleep over

Meet Mason Brian Barclay, a teen and self-described “very homosexual male.” He recently wanted to attend a sleepover at his “new best friend” Houston’s house, because teens are gonna teen. But he’s a boy, and everyone knows boys aren’t allowed to attend girls’ sleepovers, because of cooties/patriarchal norms.

So he behaved more maturely than most adults, and crafted a long text message to Houston’s mom, Mrs. Shelton, in which he politely asked for permission to attend Houston’s sleepover.

“I think the common meaning behind only allowing the same sex to share sleepovers is due to the typical interest in the opposite sex, when, in this case, I do not like the opposite sex,” he explained in the text.

Mrs. Shelton’s response was so good that Mason tweeted it out and it went viral:

“Hmm. Well my husband is hot. Should I worry?” she responded.

via GIPHY

Evidently Mason found Mrs. Shelton’s text hilarious. So does Twitter.

And others are just wondering if the sleepover is on, or not??

Others need to know if Houston’s dad lives up to the hype:

What to do when you’re the child of an alcoholic

There was never just one moment in my family when we “found out” that my dad was an addict.

I think I always knew, but I never saw him actually drinking. Usually, he downed a fifth of vodka before he came home from work or hid tiny bottles in the garage and bathroom cabinets.

My name is Ashley, and I am the child of an addict. As a kid, I cried when our family dinner reservation shrunk from four to three after a man with glassy eyes stumbled through the door. I didn’t guzzle the vodka, but I felt the heartbreak of missed birthdays. I feel like I should weigh 500 pounds from all the “I’m sorry” chocolate donuts. I had to grow up quicker, but it made me into the person I am today.

addiction, coping, 12 step programs, recovery

I spent many years shouting into journals about why this was happening to me. But this is the thing that no one will tell you about loving someone who has an addiction: it will force you to see the world through different eyes.

Here are some things I’ve learned:

1. When your family’s yelling about burnt toast, they’re probably also yelling about something else.

My family yelled about everything — and nothing — to avoid the messy stuff. We all handled my dad’s addiction differently. My brother devoured sports. My mom took bubble baths. I slammed doors and slammed boyfriends for not understanding my family’s secrets.

Regardless of the preferred coping mechanism, everyone feels pain differently.

2. Your “knight in shining armor” can’t fix this.

Boyfriends became my great escape when I was young. But when I expected them to rescue me from the pain I grew up with, it never worked out. No matter how strapping they looked galloping in on those white horses, they couldn’t save me or fix anything.

In the end, I realized that I had to find healing on my own before I could build a strong relationship.

3. “Don’t tell anyone” is a normal phase.

When my dad punched holes in the wall, my mom covered them up with artwork. I wanted to rip the artwork down to expose all the holes, especially as a bratty teenager. But eventually I realized that it wasn’t my choice. My parents had bills to pay and jobs to keep. I’ve learned it’s common to cover up for dysfunction in your family, especially when it feels like the world expects perfection.

4. Friends probably won’t get it, but you’ll need them anyway.

Bulldozed by broken promises, I remember collapsing on a friend’s couch from the crippling pain of unmet expectations. I hyperventilated. Things felt uncontrollable and hopeless. My friend rubbed my back and just listened.

These are the kinds of friends I will keep forever, the ones who crawled down into the dark places with me and didn’t make me get back up until I was ready.

5. You can’t fix addiction, but you can help.

When I was a teenager, I called a family meeting. I started by playing a Switchfoot song: “This is your life. Are you who you want to be?”

Let’s skip to the punchline: It didn’t work.

It wasn’t just me. Nothing anyone did worked. My dad had to lose a lot — mostly himself — before he hit that place they call “rock bottom.” And, in all honesty, I hate that label because “rock bottom” isn’t just a one-and-done kind of place.

What can you do while you wait for someone to actually want to get help? Sometimes, you just wait. And you hope. And you pray. And you love. And you mostly just wait.

6. Recovery is awkward.

When a counselor gave me scripted lines to follow if my dad relapsed, I wanted to shred those “1-2-3 easy steps” into a million pieces.

For me, there was nothing easy about my dad’s recovery. My whole family had to learn steps to a new dance when my dad went into recovery. The healing dance felt like shuffling and awkwardly stepping on toes. It was uncomfortable; new words, like trust and respect, take time to sink in. And that awkwardness is also OK.

7. I still can’t talk about addiction in the past tense.

Nothing about an addict’s life happens linearly. I learned that early on. My dad cycled through 12-step programs again and again, to the point where I just wanted to hurl whenever anyone tried to talk about it. And then we finally reached a point where it felt like recovery stuck.

But even now, I’ll never say, “My dad used to deal with addiction.” My whole family continues to wrestle with the highs and lows of life with an addict every single day.

8. Happy hours and wedding receptions aren’t easy to attend.

My family will also probably never clink glasses of red wine or stock the fridge full of beer. I’m convinced happy hours and wedding receptions will get easier, but they might not. People get offended when my dad orders a Diet Coke instead of their fine whisky.

Plus, there’s the paranoia factor. Surrounded by flowing liquor, I hate watching my dad crawl out of his skin, tempted to look “normal” and tackle small talk with people we barely know. I’ve learned that this fear will probably last for a while, and it’s because I care.

9. If you close your eyes, the world doesn’t just “get prettier.”

With constant fear of the unknown, sometimes our world is not a pretty place. I remember watching the breaking news on 9/11 and feeling the terror of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers as if I was there.

My dad numbed the anxiety of these dark days with vodka, but this didn’t paint a prettier world for him when he woke up the next day. I’ve dealt with the fear of the unknown with the help of boys, booze, and bad dancing on pool tables. Life hurts for everyone, and I think we all have to decide how we’re going to handle the darkness.

10. Rip off the sign on your back that reads: “KICK ME. MY LIFE SUCKS.”

Sometimes I look in the mirror and I see only my broken journey. In some twisted way, I’m comforted by the dysfunction because it’s kept me company for so long. It’s easy to let the shadow of my family’s past follow me around and choose to drown in the darkness.

But every day, I’m learning to turn on the light. I have to write the next chapter in my recovery story, but I can’t climb that mountain with all this crap weighing me down.

11. It’s OK to forgive, too.

Some people have given me sucky advice about how I should write an anthem on daddy bashing, or how to hit the delete button on the things that shaped my story.

Instead, my dad and I are both learning to celebrate the little things, like the day that he could change my flat tire. On that day, I didn’t have to wonder if he was too drunk to come help me.

I can’t forget all the dark nights of my childhood.

But I’ve learned that for my own well-being, I can’t harbor bitterness until I explode.

Instead, I can love my dad, day by day, and learn to trust in the New Dad — the one with clearer eyes and a full heart. The one who rescues me when I call.
