Younger people are admitting baby boomers got these 17 things right

In recent years, baby boomers have often been the target of criticism from younger generations. The most common accusations are that boomers are selfish and don’t care about leaving ample resources (whether financial or environmental) to subsequent generations.

They also come under fire for not being able to acknowledge that it was easier for people of their generation to come of age when things were more affordable and life was a lot less competitive.

However, we should also understand that many of today’s problems are not the boomers’ doing, especially when it comes to the issues that stem from entitled children and technology run amok. In hindsight, there’s something to be said about the importance that boomers placed on self-reliance, letting kids be kids and having a healthy skepticism towards technology.

In the end, each generation contributes to the tapestry of society in its unique way, whether good or bad, even baby boomers. This became evident after a Reddit user named Youssef4573 asked the AskReddit subforum: ‘What is something you can say ‘I’m with the boomers on this one’ about?” Over 4,700 people responded to the prompt, and the most prevalent problems mentioned by the younger generations were overreliance on technology, the modern world’s lack of human touch and how Gen Xers and millennials have raised their children.

Here are 17 things that younger people are “with the boomers” about.

1. Public filming

“Just because I’m in public doesn’t mean I want to be filmed. Yeah, I know legally you can, but common courtesy people.” — Jayne_of_Canton

2. Customer service

“I want to talk to a person in customer service, not a machine.” — lumpy_space_queenie

“And also a person that actually works at the company I bought the product from, not a teenager at an outsourced call center with a script to follow and who answers calls for 15 different companies on the same day.” — Loive.

3. Turn up the dialog

“For the love of all that is holy, can we fix the audio in movies so that the music and sound FX aren’t drowning out the dialogue?” — Caloso

“And the action sequences don’t burst your eardrums or the dialogue is whispers.” — Whynottry-again

4. Bring back buttons

“No, I don’t need everything in my car to be electronic. Some stuff needs buttons.” — LamborghiniHEAT

“This was the big thing for me in my last car – trying to adjust volume or change songs while driving is way more dangerous when it’s all touch screen. Thankfully my current car has physical knobs for everything.” — GeekdomCentral

5. App overload

“Every store/service does not need an app.” — BigDigger324

“I was standing at a car rental counter at an airport (boomer here) to rent a car. My daughter’s car broke down on the way to pick me up. While standing at the counter, with a customer service rep right there and not busy, I had to log in to their site, create an account, and reserve a car. It seemed ridiculous and it took a long time, filling in my license information and all that. This was last September.” — Cleanslate

6. Bring back DIY

“Learning DIY skills is crucial. I had basically zero DIY skills when I bought my house because I had lived in apartments for so long and I’ve had to learn a lot. YouTube tutorials are absolutely clutch.” — JingleJongleBongle

7. Turn off the speakerphone

“I hated this when I worked at Walmart. So many of my coworkers would talk on speaker or watch TikTok at full volume. It’s just trashy imo, nobody wants to hear your media.” — WhiteGuy1x

“I work at an emergency medical office and holy sh*t the amount of people that sit in a quiet, peaceful lobby and just have the LOUDEST conversations on their phone…. Speaker or otherwise. Not to mention the people that still watch sh*t without headphones. Like do you not see the plethora of other people around you that you’re disturbing?” — Cinderpuppins

8. Ban QR code menus

“I think menus should be tangible.” — Limp-Management9684

“QR codes kill the vibe. We’re all on our phones constantly throughout the day and then when you go to spend some quality time with someone, it’s another excuse to whip out the phone and stare at it. There’s an intimacy to a physical menu. You’re looking at what the other person is reading, you’re each pointing to parts of the menu. You’re noticing the lighting of the restaurant. QR codes feel chintzy and kill the ambiance completely.” — VapeDerp420

9. Stop subscriptions

“When I was your age, you only had to pay for a video game once to own it.” — CattonCruthby

10. Free the children

“A kid in 2024 should have the same freedom to exist unsupervised and move about their community independently as a boomer did growing up.” — PixelatedFish

“The world is safer than it’s ever been and people are more scared than ever. I blame true crime and local news.” ⲻ Unhappyhippo142

11. Kids need to touch grass

“Kids shouldn’t be on phones or iPads all the time. It makes them weird.” — Ubstantial_Part_952

“The same could be said about most adults.” — DrunkOctopus

12. Stop being so sensitive

“People in our generation are far, far too sensitive. Don’t get it twisted; empathy is, by and large, a good thing and it takes some serious doing for me to say it’s gone too far. But collectively, we’ve become people willing to throw every last bit of energy fighting against every slight and making sure our pet cause gets top billing to the point of fighting amongst each other even if we’re in almost complete agreement otherwise. Emotional energy – like any other kind of energy – is very much a finite resource. Whereas boomers could at least generally agree to disagree and get on with things (obvious cross-wielding exceptions doth apply). Culturally, we’ve lost sight of the adage of ‘winning the battle, losing the war.'” — almighty_smiley

13. Stop delivery

“Food delivery services are a complete ripoff; if you use them regularly, you’re terrible with money. Get off my lawn.” — VapeDerp420

14. Parking meters

“So rather than throwing a few coins in your meter, you have to now get your license plate #, get your meter number, go to the meter station, stand in line with everyone waiting to pay their meter, then you’re set. It’s an unnecessary amount of extra steps. I don’t carry cash much anymore, but I can hide a small amount of coin in my car to quickly pay a meter.” — Luke5119

15. Kids should know their place

“Not letting your children rule the roost. When did it become acceptable to let your kids back-talk to you, slap you, climb all over shi*t in public places? As we’ve raised ours, I’ve witnessed so many parents around us just let these behaviors slide. It’s kind of sad when I’m the one saying things like, “Did I just hear you just say that to your mom?!?!?!?! That is not ok. You go and apologize right now!!”. Then I get this stunned “deer in headlights” look back that tells me they aren’t used to someone calling them out on their behavior.” — Cobblestone-Villain

16. Pride in ownership

“Seems that a lot of boomers have pride of ownership and enjoy maintaining what they have.” — Awkward_Bench123

17. Don’t follow leaders

“My dad (a solid boomer) has been saying that ALL politicians are crooks since he became disenchanted with politics around the Nixon era. He was starry-eyed before that, trying to make social change, yada yada. He still votes, but holds his nose. Can’t say I disagree with him.” — Thin_white_duchess

88rising Will Again Showcase Asian Talent At Coachella With A Medley Performance Including Atarashii Gakko!, Awich, And More

Atarashii Gakko!

For the second year, the Asian-focused media company 88rising will bring a medley showcase of its label’s talent to Coachella. After putting on a smaller version of its Head In The Clouds Festival at Coachella in 2022, the collective is once again headed to Indio for “88rising Futures.” This time, 88rising will present a new lineup consisting of J-pop crews Atarashii Gakko!, Number_i, and Yoasobi, Japanese rapper Awich, Korean-American rapper Tiger JK, Chinese singer Xin Liu, and Korean rapper Yoonmirae. Meanwhile, Atarashii Gakko! and Yoasobi will also have their own individual sets.

At 2022’s “Head in the Clouds Forever” performance, 88rising introduced the Coachella audience to the label’s mainstays Jackson Wang, Rich Brian, and NIKI, while also putting on K-pop pioneers 2NE1, J-pop icon Hikaru Utada, and South Korean rap sensation CL. After that, the bar has certainly been raised, but given the collective’s consistent improvement of the Head In The Clouds Festival, there’s little doubt this year’s set will be just as impressive — if not more so.

In a press release for the performance, the 88rising stars expressed their excitement for the one-of-a-kind opportunity. As Atarashii Gakko! put it, “We are so proud to be able to represent Japanese culture at the most prestigious festival in the U.S. We have prepared a special performance that transcends language barriers and is exclusive to Coachella. We will make sure to have the most fun as a representative of Japan’s youth scene!”

Someone Please Let David Lynch Make His Animated Movie With The Writer Of ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’

David Lynch
Getty Image

David Lynch has been making his weird little movies for decades now, but not everyone is on board with his ambitious projects. In a rare interview with Deadline (Lynch prefers to address the world via his all-caps YouTube videos), Lynch confirmed that he has been working on a new project for over two decades, and it might finally be coming to life.

Lynch penned an animated feature called Snootworld with Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, though he revealed that Netflix “rejected” his ambitious pitch. It wasn’t revealed why, but Netflix was probably trying to make some room for its new Suits empire.

“I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge,” Lynch told Deadline. “I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this so I presented it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it,” he confirmed. Perhaps he should try Shudder, where the real fun is.

Snootworld is “an old-fashioned story” which is why Lynch believes Netflix didn’t pick it up. “Animation today is more about surface jokes. Old-fashioned fairytales are considered groaners: apparently, people don’t want to see them. It’s a different world now and it’s easier to say no than to say yes,” he explained. This is why we have so many Paw Patrol movies and yet there’s only one Marcel The Shell.

What’s not to love about Snootworld? Thompson described the storyline to us as “wackadoo” which is a common theme in Lynch’s filmography. “It takes my breath away how wacky it is. The Snoots are these tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected. The world goes into chaos when the Snoot hero of the story disappears into the carpet and his family can’t find him and he enters a crazy, magnificent world,” she added.

For now, Lynch is confident that the Snoot story will end. up somewhere. “I like this story. It’s something that children and adults can both appreciate…I’ve never really done a straight animation but with computers today it’s possible to do some spectacular things.”

Finally, Lynch was asked if he had any other projects on deck, to which he responded, “I can’t talk about those things right now.” There is still hope he will make a cameo in Dune: Part Three! Just imagine the intense bond between David, the real-life Willy Wonka of movies, and Timothee, a fake Willy Wonka. The world would stop.

Coachella Packing Guide

Music festival season. It’s right up there with the awards season and holiday season for times of the year that Uproxx is excited about. We just launched our music festival preview hub to get you excited about all the events coming to both towns near you and potential travel destinations. But with Coachella this week signifying the proper beginning of the music festival calendar, we’ve created a handy guide with some packing essentials.

Now, we didn’t include the most obvious items like sunscreen and an iPhone charger, but please, be sure to bring all that stuff as well. No, these might be things you think of a little less, that can take an already great experience to the next level. So check out the items on our festival packing guide below, and we’ll see you out there.

Nike Flyfree Sunglasses

Nike Sunglasses

Whether you are going to be at the festival right as the gates open or arriving at sunset as the weather cools, there’s one thing for certain: you’ll need good eyewear. Nike recently launched a line of performance-focused sunglasses, with a range of styles for everyone’s particular needs. We like the Flyfree, pictured above, which are designed for athletes and can withstand the extreme needs that festival goers experience. With dust in the air and the sun beating down, the Nike glasses offer cutting-edge lenses that enhance contrast, reduce glare, and provide pristine vision for any festival condition. Plus, they look great.

ORCA Wanderer 24

Orca
Orca

While you probably can’t bring your own food and beverages into a music festival, you’ll def need to plan ahead whether you are staying at a hotel or hitting the campgrounds. The ORCA Wanderer 24 is a great companion, with the size and space to hold wine bottles and up to a 24-pack of beer (or soda?). With five colors to choose from, we particularly like the Starboard, which can stand out from the crowd. Also, the leak-proof zipperless design and waterproof lining are ideal for travel, ensuring that your ice doesn’t leak all over your car, tent, or hotel room.

Zen Cannabis Products

Zen Gummies
Zen

We’re going to get back to some real practical, nuts-and-bolts festival gear. But first, this might be the most crucial item on the list. Particularly here in California where weed is now legal, it’s hard to imagine attending a music festival without a bit of a high. Zen Cannabis Products offers a range of gummies and chocolates, though keep in mind that the heat of Coachella could lead to some melting. Also, you probably aren’t supposed to bring cannabis products in, so best to consume AHEAD of arrival. The gummies here are tasty and effective, with a range of indicas, sativas, and hybrids to suit each person’s needs. Also, get some of the sleepy time gummies to end your festival night with peaceful rest. But please use responsibly, you don’t want to nap through Doja Cat.

GCI ComPack Rocker™

GCI ComPack Rocker
GCI ComPack Rocker

Now, back to the festival experience. While you generally can’t bring a chair into most festivals, this GCI ComPack Rocker is perfect for camping at Coachella, or anywhere else you might be gathering around a music festival. Think about it: no one ever has extra chairs when camping. If you don’t have your own, you are either sitting on the ground or standing. This chair in particular folds up for the smallest footprint possible, and its Torsion Rocking Technology™ provides a relaxing sit in even the least relaxing of atmospheres.

YSL Men’s Fragrances

YSL Men's Fragrance
YSL

Now, music festivals are often endurance challenges. But at Coachella and many other fests, you still want to look, and SMELL, your best. For us men, this is often overlooked, but YSL’s fleet of men’s fragrances are a great accessory to make sure that you are standing out from the crowd of smelly dudes. Look at their brand ambassadors, Austin Butler for MYSLF and Lenny Kravitz for Y and the just-launched Y Elixir. The latter offers a spicy-wood fragrance that is both delicate and masculine, while MYSLF is more of a floral take on the woody aesthetic. We also love that MYSLF comes in a refillable bottle, reducing waste and making the experience of smelling good all the more sustainable. If it’s good enough for Austin and Lenny, it’s def gonna help you be your best at the music festival.

Static V Lite Eco Sleeping Pad

Unless you have your own hotel room or a bed secured, many people will be roughing it a bit for festival accommodations. We recommend this inflatable sleeping pad for whatever situation you might find yourself in. Again, this is very compact so as not to take up too much of your packing footprint, but will make a world of difference in overall comfort. We particularly like the built-in siderails, which allow the sleeper to remain secure on the pad all night (or day, depending on WHEN you sleep).

Horizon Travel Blanket

Horizon Travel Blanket

Listen: Coachella is hot. Many other music festivals are hot. If you are camping, your tent will likely get hot. That doesn’t mean that you don’t need a blanket. Evenings can generally get chilly in the desert and you want to be prepared for anything. Even if you are securing a patch of ground at a friend’s Airbnb, you’ll still want warmth if they’re blasting the AC. The Horizon Travel Blanket is durable, water resistant, is able to be staked to the ground for picnicking, and packs down small. It’s ideal for almost any situation.

Seeing a live performance is perhaps the best way to hear music, but it’s also one of the loudest and potentially most harmful ways. Hearing protection is important, and Vibes’ hi-fidelity earplugs lower sound without sacrificing quality, making them a must-use for the next show you attend.

Any campsite or home rental is going to need music. So, why not do it right? This calls for Soundboks, a huge, portable, battery-powered speaker that lets you crank it up to 126 decibels. Does Netflix’s ‘Skip The Foreplay’ Feature Actually Exist?

Bridgerton Jonathan Bailey
Netflix

On Sunday morning, Netflix users went wild over a seemingly new product feature that could potentially save them from some awkward moments. According to a supposed screencap from inside the app, the streamer now offered a “Skip the Foreplay” option that would move past racy content in shows like Bridgerton and The Witcher in case you wanted to watch the programs with your parents and/or kids.

“Skip the foreplay, literally,” the screenshot read. “Make family movie night less awkward by deleting naughty scenes from this show.”

The image was tweeted by Soren Iverson, who wrote, “Netflix ‘skip the foreplay’ feature removes naughty scenes to make family movie night less awkward.”

While the feature garnered a surprising amount of positive reactions, the self-proclaimed “prudes” among us might not want to get too excited. After the tweet went unexpectedly viral and racked up over 21 million views as of this writing, Iverson posted an update to let everyone know the whole thing was just a joke.

“Well this blew up,” Iverson tweeted. “I make unhinged stuff like this daily so if you lol’d at this (or breathed through the nose a lil at least), then pls DEMOLISH that follow button.”

Iverson wasn’t kidding (about the reactions at least). The initial “Skip the Foreplay” tweet racked up a ton of responses from both people who were fully on board with the option and those who prefer their favorite shows and movies to remain uncensored.

You can see some of the reactions below:

Meek Mill Drags His Former MMG Compatriot Wale, Who He Says ‘Never Liked Me’

meek mill
Getty Image

It looks like everybody in hip-hop is catching the rap beef bug. After Kendrick Lamar threw a lyrical chair in the direction of Drake and J. Cole on Future and Metro Boomin’s new album a few weeks ago, all hell has broken loose. The chaos now encompasses GloRilla and JT, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, and now, even Meek Mill is letting his Twitter fingers fly again (I guess he forgot what happened the last time he got too reckless online).

This time, the target for Meek’s ire is another frequent collaborator: former Maybach Music Group compatriot Wale, who apparently was seen in a photo with another rapper with whom Meek has an unfriendly relationship. Ant Glizzy, a rapper from Washington, DC — like Wale — had previously done an interview with Akademiks in which he suggested that Wale and Meek had so much friction that Wale apparently “hated” Meek.

After Wale wrote, “When u get in other people unserious drama in this industry 90pct of the time they be back friends… eventually ..and then u look silly,” Meek unleashed a torrent of criticism for his former labelmate, despite previously shutting down rumors of beef between the two.

Sharing a link to Akademiks’ TikTok (apparently ignoring he has had it in for the Instagram influencer for some time, as well), Meek snapped back, “I ignored this because if this was true you would be in danger … but now I see you around guys that’s on full meek campaigns.” In a follow-up, he also insinuated that he even risked his freedom while on probation to jump into a fight and save Wale, who was getting “beat up” at his own birthday party.

“When I met wale he got beat up at his bday party in dc got his teeth knocked out,” he wrote. “I jumped in because a celebrity like him invited me I was violating probation in dc risked my life… to find out he never liked me will make you angry! That’s just me tho… I tried to be cool with this lame for Ross business I woulda been treated him.”

Maybe Meek’s still drunk from partying at Wrestlemania… But at some point, you’d think he would learn to handle his problems out of the public eye.

Jonathan Majors Has Avoided Jail Time But Must Attend A 52-Week Program For Domestic Violence Intervention

Jonathan Majors Court
Getty Image

Last December, Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment against ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. This verdict followed extensive lead-up that included messy defense tactics from Majors’ attorney, who was called out by the judge, who in turn did not appear to be thrilled with the defense’s attempts to sway public opinion by releasing text messages and the like.

In the end, however, a New York jury found Majors guilty on two of three counts against him, and since that time, his team attempted to postpone sentencing but decided to give up that fight. Variety now reports that Majors, likely because this case produced a first-time conviction, has avoided jail time. He will instead serve a year of probation and be required to attend a year-long domestic violence intervention program, as Hollywood Reporter reports. Deadline further detailed more about the program for “in person batterers” along with more conditions of this probation:

In sentencing Monday, Judge Gaffey also issued a permanent order of protection against any contact whatsoever with Jabbari and continued therapy for Majors. The actor cannot apply for or own a gun, the judge also said. Any violation of the sentencing terms could result in Majors being put behind bars for up to 364 days, Gaffey made clear today. If Majors does not complete the West Coast intervention program, he could also face six months in jail.

Majors did not make a statement ahead of sentencing. Jabbari, however, told the judge, “He is not sorry and has not accepted responsibility. He will do this again. He will hurt another women. This is a man who believes he’s above the law.”

Following Majors’ conviction, Disney/Marvel Studios cut ties with him on the role of Kang the Conqueror, which had appeared to be set for a long-term MCU run. Additionally, Disney made the decision to shelve Magazine Dreams, which stars Majors as a troubled body builder who is prone to violence and rage. As noted above, he could eventually face jail if he violates his probation in any way, including any failure to complete his intervention program.

When Does ‘Shōgun’ Episode 8 Come Out?

shogun
fx

Shogun is the latest TV show to fill the Game of Thrones-shaped void in your life, at least until House of the Dragon returns to screens. Shōgun follows an ambitious English navigator who finds himself shipwrecked in feudal Japan, where he finds himself at the center of complex familial and political drama. And… other stuff.

The first seven episodes are now available on Hulu (or Disney+ depending on your location) so you can catch up before the rest of the season.

When Does Shōgun’ Episode 8 Come Out?

Shogun episode 8, titled “The Abyss Of Life,” will premiere at 3 a.m. ET on April 9 on Hulu in the U.S. before airing on FX at 10 p.m. ET later that day. Here is the official synopsis for the episode: “Toranaga’s defeated clan moves to Edo and awaits their fate. Blackthorne must decide who he fights for — the lord who has turned his back on him, or the ambition that brought him to Japan in the first place.”

There are only three episodes left in the series, which has become one of FX’s biggest hits. The show has been dubbed a “limited series,” many fans are hoping for another season, though showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo told the Hollywood Reporter that they feel the story is done. “We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place.”

You can watch the official episode preview below:
