Sleep Hygiene Tips That Artists Swear By

FKA_twigs_wellness_beat(1024x450)

We all crave a good night’s sleep as part of our never-ending quest for wellness? We’ve also all endured the usual “mainstream” tips. Adopt a regular sleep time, eschew caffeine after dark, avoid stimulating activity and/or screen time ahead of the magic hour. Got it. Tried it. What’s next? Because in a world where no “one-size-fits-all” sleep tip exists, we all need fresh ideas and recs to cycle through until we find the right combination for our own busy, sleep deprived lives. That’s why we wanted to explore the social feeds and past interviews of some of our favorite artists, a group of people out there living as jet-lagged and chaotic a life as anyone (with a little help from their crews, of course) while also dealing with annoying sleep burdens.

From Lady Gaga (who falls prey to an “overactive mind” that can keep her awake for three days straight) to Rihanna, (who admits to relying upon “sleep pockets,” which she realizes aren’t ideal), these icons know a thing or two about the quest for rest. So let’s explore some of the music industry’s favorite tricks and methods.

Embrace Your Own Personal Ritual

FKA Twigs is no stranger to unforeseen tour stressors, but even while away from home, the Eusexua singer follows a go-to insomnia prevention plan with a bedtime ritual. “I’ve always loved dressing for bed. [Having] a ‘look’ on even if I’m going to sleep, it makes me feel good.” she enthused while also recommending candles and incense and spending “quiet time to reflect on my day.” Well, crafting a “look” for bed might be too elaborate for most, but don’t let that intimidate you from considering the approach. Whether that means dedicating full-on sleep “outfits” or simply keeping a stash of fuzzy socks, that’s up to the individual. The same goes for scents that soothe, although Twigs isn’t wrong about incense setting the mood for relaxation.

Turn The Smallest Indulgences Into Self-Care

Ice Spice has made headlines for her recent fitness kick, but when it comes to sleep hygiene, a simple cup of tea is a cornerstone of her approach. Following a performance, the rapper turns to calming tea like chamomile to wind down and start looking towards restful nours. Ariana Grande also favors the simplicity camp and considers wellness to be “an important investment.” To enter a restful state of mind, she meditates with essential oils like lavender, which she believes “immediately triggers calmness.” (As an aside, add a little lemongrass oil into that equation, and you might never want to leave bed.) Additionally, Kelly Clarkson keeps a bedside journal to record any lyrical ideas as she drifts off while preserving those ideas for another day.

Or Get Ultra-Technical With It

Harry Styles happens to be a fan of a regimented wellness routine, especially while globe-trotting away from Harry’s House. As such, he favors 10 hours of shut-eye and vitamin-loaded IVs, and he maintains an astounding list of dietary restrictions to keep his energy and voice in tip-top shape. Additionally, he loads up his hotel room with multiple humidifiers that “apparently made it look like he was stepping out of a steam room when he opened his hotel-room door.” That might be overkill, sure, but Styles favors that last practice for hydration purposes including for his vocal cords (he likely took a cue from Mariah Carey). And for those who also find comfort in structure, perhaps one of Harry’s tips will inspire their own ultra-supportive routine.

Lights Out, No Distractions?

Sabrina Carpenter sits on one end of this spectrum by eschewing distractions before bedtime, including television. In fact, as the “Espresso” crooner declared, “I can’t remember the last time I watched a TV show.” During her bedtime hour, which differs each day, she’s generally so spent that she prefers to pass out “as quickly as I can.” Whereas Olivia Rodrigo grants herself leeway on the screen time topic. The Vampire singer admits to sleeping “so much on tour,” sometimes up to 13 hours daily, but also, “I’ve been watching all of my comfort shows.” So pick your poison, and for Rodrigo, that means “watching Sex and the City every day,” and for current shows, might we suggest Ted Lasso or Emily In Paris for the same frivolous, feel-good effect?

When All Else Fails, Look For That Magic Bullet

CBD is high on the list of aids for Travis Barker, who developed his own Wellness Sleep Tincture, a vegan-based blend that contains melatonin to help regulate his sleep cycle. Likewise, Beyoncé espoused the strengths of CBD “for restless nights” and the “agitation that comes from not being able to fall asleep” along with the “healing properties” of honey. Then there’s Ed Sheeran, who has zero products to recommend, and as a self-labelled ex-bad boy, Sheeran’s bullet involves simply rising “at 5:30 every morning” by “not being a f*cking maniac with drinking, drugs, or just smoking” at night. And if it works? Good on him, but “Don’t” be afraid to seek out your own magic bullet.

‘Gen V’ Season 2: Everything To Know About Bridging The Gap Before ‘The Boys’ Finale, Including Who Won’t Return (May 2025 Update)

gen-v-the-boys-lg
Prime Video/Amazon

The Boys will end with the upcoming fifth season, but the franchise has plenty of other irons in the fire. Vought Rising will follow misdeeds of the earliest Supes, including Stormfront and Soldier Boy, and a Mexico spin off remains theoretically possible, but much sooner, fledgling Supes will be going back to campus. Let’s dive into what The Boys universe architect Eric Kripke and the gang have in store for the second Gen V season.

Cast

Chance Perdomo Gen V
Brooke Palmer/Amazon Prime Video

To address the most somber matter first, Chance Perdomo, who passed away on the planned eve of filming, will be honored in this season as part of the plot (described in a below section). Additionally, Patrick Schwarzenegger will not return as the late Golden Boy, whose flashbacks appear to be complete. As Patrick did tell Screenrant, however, his schedule had prevented him from making a potential return, and as he understands the situation, the door is not shut for Golden Boy to surface during a third season or beyond.

Can we expect a cameo or two from The Boys to surface? Yup. As reported by Total Film, Chace Crawford will cameo as Deep after he killed his octopus lover in The Boys. And the possibility remains open that Homelander could again touch down to shake everybody’s little world up.

Additionally, new Gen V cast includes Sean Patrick Thomas (as Polarity) as well as Julia Knope, Keeya King, Tait Fletcher, Stephen Kalyn, Wyatt Dorion, Stacey McGunnigle, and Georgie Murphy in undescribed roles.

Confirmed returning cast members will include Jaz Sinclair (as Marie), Lizze Broadway (as Emma/Cricket), and London Thor and Derek Luh (both as Jordan). Likewise, Maddie Phillips (Cate) and Asa Germann (Sam) will be back as the Guardians of Godolkin from their visit to The Boys. Alongside the new dean, Cipher (Hamish Linklater), they’ll form a welcoming committee. Yikes.

Plot

As referenced above, Gen V will address Chance Perdomo’s death through passing of his character, the metal-manipulating Andre Anderson, within the show itself. His father, Polarity (portrayed by Sean Patrick Thomas), will appear as part of the tribute.

Otherwise, plot details remain mysterious, but Eric Kripke has confirmed that the season is fully edited with “music, sound & VFX now.” He then promised, “I think this season is better than S1 & will be worth the wait.” Also, this Gen V season begins its story a few days after the events of the fourth The Boys season finale. We can also guess that although Vought Rising takes place in the distant past, we’ll probably see some nods toward the early days of Soldier Boy (who already appeared once as Cate’s fantasy object) and Stormfront.

Elsewhere, Kripke and showrunner Michelle Fazekas dropped hints to Deadline on how the outrage factor will stay strong, and so will the story:

FAZEKAS: As Eric says, it comes from the story and the characters. We never start with how outrageous we can be, we ground it in what are the characters want to do, what the characters want to feel. What do they want? For Season 2, I do have one idea, but it’s more of a scene that than something outrageous.

KRIPKE: (laughs) Some may say that our copious amounts of semen are the glaze on top of a cake that we very carefully bake.

FAZEKAS: Yes!

In that same interview, Kripke clarified that Cate is “not crazy or just straight up evil or wrong. She was f*cked over by humans consistently, so she’s somewhat been broken. She’s crossed the line and you’re hurting people and stuff, but on one level, I don’t even fault her. She got broken by this system … at least in this season. She’s past the point of no return.”

Yet in San Diego Comic-Con footage observed by Screenrant, it sounds like Cate had a change of heart and is shown “having remorse for her actions, while Sam continues to be a villain.” Hmm.

Release Date

Gen V will return in 2025 with no window specified, yet.

Trailer

Supposedly, yeah, a trailer is coming soon. Until that happens, Homelander is pleased to relive the most recent season finale mayhem for you.

Will There Be A ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Season 5?

power-raising-kanan-lg
Starz

Powerhouse producer 50 Cent‘s TV offerings appear to know no bounds or shortages of beefs, but the current drama on Power Book III: Raising Kanan is most decidedly of the onscreen variety. This week’s fourth season finale strongly suggested that Kanan killed his own mother, Raq, although Patina Miller’s postmortem interviews have not confirmed that her queenpin bit the dust, and that cliffhanger will linger until another season surfaces, so naturally, you’ll want to know whether that’s happening.

Will There Be A Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5?

Yes. Variety is reporting that the fifth season will also be the series’ last.

Furthermore, Shameik Moore (who debuted in the fourth season finale) will be joining the series as regular to portray the nearly mythical Branford “Breeze” Frady. Showrunner Sascha Penn told Hollywood Reporter that she anticipates an “incredibly polarizing” further introduction to Breeze “simply because everyone has it in their own heads of who this character is and what he looks like.” However, “His story is a story that I felt we needed to tell. And not just for the fanbase, but also because he is a seminal character as it relates to Kanan, Ghost and Tommy.”

Get ready for that controversy, but there’s no release date yet to tell us the “when,” although the show will continue (after following up on Raq’s ultimate fate) to push Kanan further down the road to his monstrous Power status.

Foo Fighters Will Have A New Drummer When They Play Their First Concert In Over A Year

The most recent live Foo Fighters performance was in August 2024, shortly before Dave Grohl revealed that he has a daughter “born outside of my marriage.” A 2025 tour was reportedly canceled, and Grohl has kept busy as the spokesperson for rock ‘n’ roll, but the Foos have announced their first concert since last summer. The band will headline the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix concerts on October 4 — without drummer Josh Freese.

Freese, who took over for Taylor Hawkins following his tragic death in 2022, announced in an Instagram note that he’s been “let go” from the group.

“The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given,” he wrote. “Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.”

He continued, “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine. Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.

No replacement drummer has been announced.

Joy Crookes Desperately Chases Down Beauty Standards In Her ‘Carmen’ Video

Typically, Joy Crookes uses her groovy tracks (including “I Know You’d Kill” and “Mathematics“) to address romantic highs and lows.

Today (May 16), Joy turned her pen inward. On her latest single, “Carmen,” Joy outlines her emotional battle with confidence. In the official video, Joy tackles the vicious cycle of chasing beauty standards.

“I just wanna pay you attention / Any god would offer you heaven / Oh, I wanna know what that’s like / I wanna be wanted like Carmen / Everybody’s throwing their heart in / Girl, you’re such a beautiful problem / I can’t take you off of my eyes / I wanna be wanted like Carmen,” sings Joy on the chorus.

Throughout the visual, Joy forgoes her God-given beauty for what society tells her is “better.”

On the track’s second verse, Joy is the most emotionally vulnerable, singing: “Brown skin European with my London Eye / I get envious of that vanilla type / You go classic like Coco Chanel / Is it bad I want that for myself / Five on it, so stunning, go lightly, like you do / Girl, I see it, goddamn pleasers, ain’t no mountain you don’t move / You crash in, I’m the casualty / What about me? When do I get to be Carmen?”

Eventually, Joy learns that she was always beautiful.

Rappers Who Pursued Their Hoop Dreams

Rappers Who Pursued Their Hoop Dreams(1024x450°
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

The parallel rises of rap and basketball throughout the ’70s and ’80s led to a fascinating phenomenon in the ’90s and beyond, wherein a practitioner of one could turn out to be surprisingly adept at the other. While this has led to a rise in the number of professional basketball players who dabble in rap music (hello, Gelo!), it’s been more rare for rappers to make it into pro basketball — but not unheard of.

While it’s fairly common to see rappers who were respected athletes throughout high school and even college, there have only been a handful of rappers to make it all the way to the pro level — and only one who managed to make it to the NBA, even if only for a cup of coffee. Here’s a list of the MCs who moonlighted as PGs, who hustled their way up from street ciphers to the half-court circle.

Pros:

Master P

There’s only one place to start here: with the only professional rapper to date to sign with an NBA team. The 6’4″ Master P, aka Percy Miller, was one of a handful of pioneering indie rappers from the South in the ’90s, exploding into national stardom with his 1997 single, “Make ‘Em Say Uhh!” His pre-existing rap success didn’t stop him from trying out for the Charlotte Hornets in 1998, or for the Vancouver Grizzlies (now the Memphis Grizzlies) the following season. He played in one preseason game for the Grizzlies, scoring 8 points against the Toronto Raptors before being waived as the season started.

J. Cole

The next closest thing to the NBA is the NBA-backed BAL (Basketball Africa League), in which the 6’2″ North Carolina native played three games in 2021. All told, he totaled 5 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds, averaging about 15 minutes a game. The pro ball bug stayed with Cole after his BAL stint, and he joined the Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League the next year, averaging 2.4 points through six games and proving that he could at least hang with pro ballers.

Sheck Wes

It’s ironic that Sheck Wes came to notoriety with a song touting his former high school teammate “Mo Bamba,” as he would follow Bamba in pursuit of pro basketball glory. However, the 6’2″ Cactus Jack signee would take a different route, joining France’s LNB Pro A, the top division of the Ligue Nationale de Basket, in 2021 for Paris Basketball. Sheck played three games for the then-recently-promoted Paris, averaging 1.3 ppg.

College:

Dave East

Standing 6 feet, 5 inches, New York native David Brewster played two seasons at Towson University in Maryland, VA, although injuries and academic struggles curtailed his career.

2 Chainz

Another 6’5″ natural forward, Atlantan rapper Tauheed Epps attended Alabama State University on a scholarship for two seasons, where he contributed 3 points a game in his 96-97 season before getting “into some trouble” and transferring to Virginia State.

Stalley

Ohio’s own Stalley reportedly had a scholarship to the University of Michigan to play ball, but was shut down by a foot injury.

High School:

Quavo

Quavo was a bit of a multi-sport star in his Georgia hometown, playing basketball and starring as the starting quarterback of his school’s team, before dropping out to pursue… other endeavors. He kept up with sports, hosting community events and even a basketball tournament for one of his video shoots.

Cam’ron

Cam often brags that he and Harlem partner Mase were nice enough to go pro (that’s what they all say), but his lack of academic focus cost him a scholarship.

The Game

Game played a bit for Compton High, but is also notable for his participation in LA’s storied pro-am, the Drew League, for several seasons, including a championship season in which his team, Birdie’s Revenge, went undefeated. You can read about it here.

Latto Takes A Tropical Vacation In Her Revealing ‘Somebody’ Video

The video for Latto‘s new single “Somebody” is straight up travel propaganda (I was going to use another “p” word here, but let’s not get deprioritized on Google, right?), with the Atlanta native taking in a tropical vacation to Jamaica. All the hallmarks of complete relaxation are here: a raft ride down a lazy river, all the lush greenery you can handle, and of course, one of the skimpiest bikinis you’ve ever seen. Latto knows her brand, and she represents it well; her sister Brooklyn Nikole directs, and Jamaican star Popcaan has a cameo.

“Somebody” is the “Big Energy” rapper’s first new single of the year, following the release of her criminally underrated album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, and its singles “Big Mama,” “Brokey,” and “Blick Sum.” That could mean a deluxe edition is on the way, or that Latto’s already nearing a release of a full-length follow-up to Sugar Honey Iced Tea, which would be more than welcome in what’s been kind of a slow year for big-name rap so far.

If the latter’s the case, any news of the release would probably come this summer, after she completes her European tour including festival dates in the UK, France, Berlin, Amsterdam, and more. You can find more info about Latto’s tour here.

Has ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Been Cancelled Or Renewed?

doctor-odyssey-lg
ABC/Disney

Ryan Murphy is enjoying perhaps the most enviable dilemma: as a powerhouse producer, his shows are so popular and plentiful that he can’t possibly keep up. Is that Taylor Sheridan’s future, too? Perhaps, but at the moment, eyes are on Murphy’s many shows and how some of them might be pushed out due to popular demand for the others. That is to say, Murphy is working on so many followup seasons like Monster‘s third season with Charlie Hunnam, and it appears that The Watcher‘s second season has already been indefinitely postponed. Could Doctor Odyssey join that club?

The sexy Joshua Jackson medical drama set at sea (what a set of words that is) nabbed ratings records upon debut both on ABC and Hulu. The series also finished up its first season this week, but somehow, the show still remains on the renewal bubble, so it’s time to check whether that status has changed.

Has Doctor Odyssey Been Cancelled Or Renewed?

None of the above. Yet. Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva has updated the situation following Disney’s upfront presentation this week, and Doctor Odyssey has been replaced by another (new) Ryan Murphy series, 9-1-1: Nashville, on the fall 2025 lineup.

That isn’t the greatest news, but it’s also important to remember that this isn’t a cancellation, and ideally, this is merely a postponement because, yup, Ryan Murphy is incredibly busy:

“Doctor Odyssey isn’t currently on our schedule,” Craig Erwich, President, Disney Television Group, told Deadline. “Ryan’s really busy. He’s doing a lot with us. 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville, All’s Fair [for Hulu]. So we’re just continuing that creative conversations with him.”

To hammer home the point of this not being an axing, President of Disney TV Studios Eric Schrier further told Deadline, “I really love Doctor Odyssey, I think it’s a wildly inventive show.” However, “That decision ultimately lies with Ryan Murphy, whether Ryan wants to continue to do it.” There is a deadline for that decision since the cast options will expire in June, but at least there will be definitive word by then on whether Doctor Odyssey will set sail again.

Rico Nasty Wants To ‘Crash’ Into Love In Her Heart-Racing New Video

On the outside, Rico Nasty is a tough-as-nails genre-bending recording artist. But on the inside, the “Butterfly Kisses” musician is a big ol’ softie.

Today (May 16), Rico Nasty shared a slice of her more delicate side in the official music video for “Crash.” On the Lethal single, Rico opens up about feeling safe enough to fully surrender to love. But in typical Rico fashion, inside of gently giving into the emotional force, she wants to attack it like a bull in a china shop.

“I used to, but now I can’t pretend / I want it, I want to do it again / And again and again and again / When you crash into me and I curl like a wave / Now I’m screaming out, “This time you can stay / When you crash into me, I forgive all the pain / And I’m begging you, this time you can stay / This time you can stay / Need somewhere to crash like the waves,” sings Rico.

Director Devin Desouza amplifies that romantic intensity as Rico and her lover navigates the ebbs and flows of their relationship.

Lethal is out now via Fueled By Ramen. Find more information here.
