Waxahatchee Works Through Codependency And Addiction On The New ‘Tigers Blood’ Single ‘365’

We’re now a week and change away from Tigers Blood, the latest album from Waxahatchee. Katie Crutchfield still has some promo to do ahead of then, so today, she shared a new single, “365.” The song arrives alongside a one-shot video directed by frequent collaborators Corbett Jones and Nick Simonite.

Crutchfield says of the song:

“‘365’ is a song about codependency as it pertains to addiction and relationships with addicts. It’s something I’ve dealt with a lot in my life and I really wanted to distill the nerves and emotions down to their purest form in this song. Brad Cook and I had a lot of ideas we tried for this one, but in the end, we tracked it live just him, Jake Lenderman and myself running the song a couple of times together in the room.”

In a new interview with Pitchfork, Crutchfield also noted of the thought process behind her new album, “I think my life gets weirder and less relatable the older that I get. So I try to write in a way that’s relatable to anyone with any problem. There’s some universal emotional truth that people can get to the bottom of, even if they don’t understand everything I’m talking about.”

The Lead-Up To John Cena’s Nude Oscars Presentation Sounds Like An Absolute Nightmare

John Cena Naked Oscars Jimmy Kimmel
Getty Image

John Cena’s Oscar “streak” of a Costume Design presentation had the live audience rolling as he pretended to sweat out how he couldn’t drop or lift the envelope without showing off everything to the world. As it turns out, the real sweating parties were the Standard and Productions executives who feared that some “crack” or “bulge” would slip into the broadcast, which would of course set off a world of legal and financial hurt for ABC.

With that said, Cena wasn’t entirely naked (although Fox News host Brian Kilmeade appreciated the hair removal aspect) because he had some nude fabric affixed to both areas. He was also as much of a Ken doll as Ryan Gosling when it came to reducing the bulge, according to Walt Disney TV alternative head Rob Mills while speaking with Variety:

“I’m going to educate you a little here,” Mills says. “A bulge cannot be showing, and you can’t show crack. It was also, ’What happens if he drops that card?’ So, we made sure that, for all intents and purposes, he looked like a Ken doll up front. His crack was covered in the back and then the envelope was Velcro-ed on there so it wouldn’t fall. But beyond that, he was naked.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! producer Molly McNearney added that the S&P execs were “sweating,” but eventually, everyone seemed to settle down to where “it didn’t compromise the comedy a bit.” And on Monday night’s late-night broadcast, Kimmel revealed of the lead-up stress, “Somebody was crying.” He then added, “Then once they realized we weren’t going to take no for an answer … there was intense discussion about the the envelope.” From there, S&P wanted to use a “shoebox”-sized envelope rather than what materialized, and Kimmel handed “congratulations” to Cena: “The commotion you caused. Very rarely does an idea literally push the envelope and this one did.”

Yup, that envelope had an important job to do, too.

Justin Timberlake Hilariously Made Himself ‘Guest Host’ To Do Jimmy Kimmel’s Opening Monologue Instead

Justin Timberlake briefly took over Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue duties during the Monday, March 11 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! — but not everything went to plan.

“I’m going to be your host tonight, Justin Timberlake,” Timberlake started. “Now you all might know me from being… Justin Timberlake.” He began to tell some jokes, including about NSYNC, when Kimmel came out to take back the mic.

“I’m confused, why are you here?” Kimmel asked. “I’m the guest host,” Timberlake answered.

“No, you’re the musical guest, why would I need a guest host?” Kimmel then pointed out in the planned skit, as Timberlake would perform later in the episode.

“Because you were out all night at the Oscar afterparty,” Timberlake replied. “No, not really. I went to one party then I went to bed,” Kimmel said.

A bit after Kimmel reclaimed his lead role on the show, Timberlake came back to perform “No Angels” from his forthcoming album, Everything I Thought It Was. Kimmel announced the pop star’s performance with a loud cheering crowd behind him.

Timberlake matched the groovy song with some red lighting and entertaining backing jazz musicians, including a trumpet player and more.

“Like full throttle, pilot on auto / There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor / Forget tomorrow, more like you wanna play / There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor,” he sang.

Check out Timberlake’s performance of “No Angels” on Kimmel and the opening monologue joke above.

Is The New WcDonald’s Sauce As Good As The Anime It References?

WcDonald's Sauce
McDonald’s/Uproxx

If you’ve been to McDonald’s in the past week you likely noticed the restaurant has been given a slight anime makeover. The take-out bags are now covered in vivid manga drawings, there are posters everywhere promoting something called “WcDonald’s” and now there is a new limited-time-only dipping sauce known as WcDonald’s sauce, complete with Japanese Kanji.

The sauce might have given you pause at the drive-thru window recently — do you stray from your tried and true favorite dipping sauce and try this premium limited sauce, or do you stick with what you know works? This can be a real dilemma considering McDonald’s charges for any additional sauces to the two you receive free with your order. And while extra sauce isn’t exactly breaking the bank (though two is never enough), some people won’t pay for extra sauce just based on principle. So we’re taking the hit for you, rolling up to McDonald’s, and ordering a 10-piece McNugget meal with a side of fries, and a bunch of extra WcDonald’s sauce to answer the question: is WcDonald’s any good?

But first… let’s talk about the anime tie-in and why it’s happening.

What The Hell Is WcDonald’s?

Anime
Inuyasha/Hulu

If you’re an anime fan you may have noticed a McDonald’s-like restaurant appearing with an upside-down “W” logo across several different anime properties. The symbol first appeared in a 1985 episode of the anime Cat’s Eye and has since popped up in anime like City Hunter, Virtua Fighter, Gundam Wing, InuYasha, Detective Conan, Digimon Savers, and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, just to name a very very small few.

That’s over 40 years of anime, all repping a restaurant known as “Wakudonarudo.”

A post shared by Risa  Light (@r1s4_jpn)

McDonald’s has decided to embrace Wakudonarudo — renamed WcDonald’s because its easier to say — and has teamed up with legendary anime studio Studio Pierrot (responsible for classics like Urusei Yatsura, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and Bleach) for a special WcDonald’s manga series that customers can access by scanning the QR codes on the new manga-inspired packaging, which features artwork by Japanese illustrator Acky Bright.

As a kick-off for the promotion, McDonald’s put together an immersive dining experience in Los Angeles that just wrapped this weekend and recreated WcDonald’s.

Okay, that covers the anime tie-in, let’s talk about why you’re here: the sauce.

WcDonald’s Sauce Review

WcDonald's

Tasting Notes & Thoughts

There is an intense sweetness to the WcDonald’s sauce, with a combination of ginger and garlic flavors joined by a light dusting of chili flakes in a heavy soy-based sauce. It’s a bit like thick teriyaki sauce in consistency, but not as delicate and nuanced. It’s got more heat and a stronger emphasis on sweet flavors that McDonald’s stock Sweet and Sour sauce doesn’t deliver.

The heat lives on the backend and never tips into full-on spicy, but it’s a nice amount of heat that even the most spice-obsessed will be able to enjoy. Overall, I think it’s a strong addition to McDonald’s roster of sauces and it’ll be a real shame when this one leaves the menu.

As for what to pair it with I think the McNuggets win this round easily. The sweetness of the sauce and heavy ginger flavor shine best when paired with the neutral flavor of the nugget, allowing the sauce to elevate the dish and deepen the flavors.

McDonald’s fries already have a sort of buttery sweetness to them, and when paired with the sauce I felt the combined flavor was a bit too overwhelming. Make no mistake, it makes for a good fry dip if you like sweet flavors, but if you’re trying to ration sauce, I’d use it on the nuggets before the fries. You’ll get about two nuggets per sauce before you have to open another.

The Bottom Line:

A rich and flavorful sauce that leans sweet and deserves permanent menu status. The sauce tastes best paired with nuggets.

Christopher Nolan Has Already Started Working On His Post-‘Oppenheimer’ Movie

Christopher Nolan collected a reported $72 million paycheck for Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office and won two Oscars, Best Picture and Best Director. What will he do for a follow-up?

We might find out sooner rather than later: according to Puck, Nolan has “already started writing” his next feature. Nolan hasn’t said what his next movie will be, although he has expressed an interest in horror. But he did tell Yahoo! that “part of me wants to leave the story behind… [the] subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”

Christopher Nolan should direct Paddington 4. Let Cillian play the villain.

“To the Academy — movies are just a little bit over 100 years old,” Nolan said during his acceptance speech for Best Director at the Oscars. “We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.” He added, “Thank you to those who have believed in me my whole career.”

If you somehow haven’t seen Oppenheimer, you can do so on Peacock.

Yesterday (March 11) was a big day for Kanye West: It was revealed that his and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures 1 single “Carnival” is No. 1 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart. This makes the song Ye’s first No. 1 hit in 13 years, since his and Katy Perry’s 2011 collaboration “ET.” The achievement has West feeling some kind of way, and that way is vengeful.

In celebration of the feat, West shared his thoughts on Instagram, in which he goes after some of his opponents. He wrote:

“Rich Ty Carti and the supporters that stood by us through everything This number #1 is for you it’s for the people who won’t be manipulated by the system and f*ck adidas and everybody who works there or with them Anyone who goes to school with anyone who’s parents work at adidas Just know they tried to destroy me and here we are with the number 1 song in the world Like the fake dude I saw in the lobby at the Ritz that works at Goat You p*ssys don’t stand for sh*t And f*ck everybody at the Dailey Mail And F*ck everybody at the fashion houses that sided with Gabby and Hailey Bieber F*ck each and every single one of all And f*ck every Christian that watched me have my kids taken out of my control That’s how I feel And it’s f*ck Drake for taking Durk right at the beginning of the Vultures role out I’ll come back to yall if I think of more f*ck you’s.”

As Complex notes, the post has since been edited to read simply, “No caption.”

Jay Wright Talks March Madness And Says Which National Title Contender ‘Could Really Surprise People’

jay wright

Jay Wright knows a thing or two about the highs and lows that come with this time of year. Between the various conference tournaments that are ongoing and the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the eyes of the sports world are on college basketball during the next few weeks. And over the last decade or so, Wright’s name has been synonymous with March Madness success, as he led the Villanova Wildcats to a pair of national championships and consistently won Big East regular season and tournament crowns.

Wright retired following the 2022 campaign, but he’s stayed around the game as a broadcaster. Whether he’s in the booth for CBS or on a studio show, Wright has been a natural, the sort of analyst that television executives would kill to have. It’s given him a chance to check out some of the best teams in America from up close, which is invaluable this time of year as he prepares to analyze a 68-team single elimination tournament.

Last week, Dime caught up with Wright via his partnership with Great Clips for its Wrights & Wrongs campaign to discuss the importance of matchups, his favorite team to watch, and much more.

What do you have going on with Great Clips?

We’re working together because Great Clips is such a great sponsor of March Madness. So, we’re doing this together, trying to teach people the right way to prepare for March Madness. The first thing I do is you got to go get a clean cut. So, I’ve got some nice cuts from Great Clips — hope it looks all alright on our show here. Lot of pressure on me, Bill, because you always gotta keep the hair right when you’re working for Great Clips now.

So, we’re trying to teach people the right way to prepare is get cleaned up for the Tournament, get a good cut at Great Clips. And then sign up for the Great Clips sweepstakes, which, you can go to your mobile app and you can sign on there to win two free tickets to next year’s Final Four, all expenses paid. You can go to the men’s Tournament or the women’s Tournament, your choice, but you can win that free by signing up on the mobile app that Great Clips has.

So, it’s fun. We’re saying, do the right thing, sign up on the mobile app, get a clean cut, be looking good, don’t do anything stupid like be upset when your team loses and cut bangs or at halftime think that it’d be good luck for your team and have your buddy shave your head or something. Don’t do anything stupid like that. Be clean and looking good going into the Tournament.

Obviously this is all happening around March Madness. And you got a long list to pick from, but I’m going to ask you, what’s your favorite game you ever coached in during this time of year that didn’t end with you winning the Big East or the NCAA Tournament? Just one that you look back on and go, “Oh man, what a game”?

That’s a great question, Bill, because usually, I want to pick the one where Scottie Reynolds hit the shot to send us to the Final Four the first time, or the Kris Jenkins shot. But you’re right, there are a lot of other games.

In the semifinals … it’s tough to pick one that you lose, but there are some that you played well. But in the semifinals in 2016, we played Oklahoma with Buddy Hield. We played them in Pearl Harbor, on Pearl Harbor Day, on national TV, and they beat us by 30 early in the year, and it was embarrassing [ed. note: Oklahoma won, 78-55]. And if I’m honest, we were scared to death going into that game, because they’ve already drilled us by 30. And now, we’re playing in the national semifinals.

And we played out of our minds — I really felt sorry for Oklahoma because they had no idea what the fear did to us. We wanted to beat them by 40 [ed. note, pt. 2: Villanova won, 95-51]. It was the craziest game, and they were looking at it like, hey, here’s the next game. They had no idea how juiced we were and how inspired we were from getting beat so bad early in the year.

Let’s talk about college basketball this year. Obviously, conference tournaments are just starting up, NCAA Tournament’s not long after. What’s your 10,000 foot view of the race for a national title this year?

It’s good we can talk about that, because March Madness is bigger than just the NCAA Tournament. We’re in March, it’s this time of year, these conference tournaments are crazy. And if you’re a mid-major — and I coached at Hofstra University on Long Island, we’re a mid-major — and you know, as a player or coach or even a fan, we’ve got one chance of going to the Tournament, and when you play at that school, maybe in your four or five years you have one chance to even get to that championship game to maybe play in the Tournament.

It’s so thrilling. I remember at Hofstra, the championship games were were bigger than the NCAA Tournament game, because it was so exciting. You kind of knew if you got to the Tournament, you’re gonna be like a 15 seed, or a 14 seed. You might have a chance to win. But it was such an honor to be in that tournament that these games that you watch these guys play right now are thrilling. Once you get to the Tournament, that’s a whole other level. The enormity of that is nothing you’ll ever experience in your careers, even if you play in the NBA. The NBA playoffs don’t envelop our entire country like the NCAA Tournament. There’s nothing like that in sports in our country.

So, when you look at the Tournament, and you look at last year’s Tournament, UConn ended up finding that gear that nobody else was able to find — I think they won every game by double digits, I think you guys in 2018, if I remember correctly, won every game by double digits. Do you think there’s a team in the country this year — UConn again, Houston, Purdue, etc. — that when they are at their best, they have a level that no one can reach? Or do you think it really is just all about styles make fights this year?

Wow, so, that’s a really good question. One of the things I hope I can share on CBS this year is even though we won games — every game by double figures — in 2018, when you’re in those games, like, we were down six, late in the game, to West Virginia in the second half. We wound up winning by, I think, 12 or 14, but it was a really close game. We played Texas Tech, it was a two or three possession game. By the end…

They start fouling, you hit free throws.

And UConn, UConn almost lost their first game to Iona. They were down at halftime. But they still were a dominant team, but it’s never as easy as the numbers look.

But matchups — to your point, Bill — I always think matchups are the key. I think Houston, Purdue, UConn have kind of separated themselves — there’s another group below them like Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky. But I think those three have separate themselves. However, having said that, because of styles of play, there are certain teams. If they get, let’s say a Washington State, for instance, who has big size, can slow you down, play in the halfcourt. If they get a team like Connecticut, they slow them down, they get them in the halfcourt, don’t let them get easy baskets, rebound, they could get them.

So, it’s matchups. However, I do think those three teams — Houston, Connecticut, Purdue — I think there’s a little separation there. If we could get one of those two against each other in a final? That’d be pretty amazing game.

And then going off of that, as someone who has a coach’s eye for things, who has been your favorite team to watch this year and why — the one rule is you’re not allowed to say Villanova.

[laughs] I can tell you, Villanova is not my favorite team, because it drives me crazy. I didn’t think about this, it’s so hard, it’s like watching your kids. Kyle Neptune’s like my little brother, the players are like my kids, I’m dying every game, so it’s no fun.

But I’ll tell you a team that a lot of people are not talking about that I think is ranked number six in the country right now: Iowa State. I did their game for CBS when they played Kansas and beat Kansas. And preparing for that game, I watched the film of their game where they beat Houston. So, they’re the top defensive team, and if you look at the analytics, they’re always like, one, two or three because it changes by the game. But to me, of the teams that I’ve watched, they’re the best defensive team I’ve watched, even better than Houston slightly, slightly.

They’ve got a point guard in Tamin Lipsey who can really run the show and could get it going. They’ve got guards that can really get it going. Keshon Gilbert can get it going. They could really surprise people, I love watching them play. And it’s crazy to say the number six team in the country and a team that might win the Big 12 could surprise people, but I don’t hear anybody talking about.

Yeah, when you hear the Big 12, everyone seems to go to Houston. Like, I didn’t realize that Iowa State is one game behind them in the conference right now.

Yeah, and you know, it’s interesting, you say about Houston, who I love. They have an injury to Joseph Tugler, who was a big part of what they do. He played like 20 minutes a game and he’s a great rim protector and rebounder. Houston has good guard depth, but now, they’ve only got two guys up front, two bigs up front that have really played. I think that’s going to affect them, I’m interested in them see them play in the Big 12 tournament without Joseph Tugler. I think it’s a bigger loss than people have talked about right now.

And then my last question: Does it upset you that it took this long for Kyle Lowry to come back to Philly, or are you just glad it finally happened?

You know what? There were … you’re right on. There were some opportunities that Sixers could have got him, and I always was rooting for that. And so was he quietly, although he did love the Miami Heat, he loved that culture, so he was very happy with that. But it’s so cool to have him back to Philly because he is Philly basketball. Started in the public league in Philly, transferred to the Catholic League, plays a Philadelphia brand of basketball. We’re so proud to have him back home and I know he’s loving it.

Eric Carmen, The Singer Behind ’80s Classic ‘Hungry Eyes’ And ’70s Hit ‘All By Myself,’ Is Dead At 74

Eric Carmen 1975

Eric Carmen, the leader of the Raspberries who went on to solo success with songs like “All By Myself” and “Hungry Eyes,” is dead at 74 years old.

A statement from wife Amy Carmen shared on the artist’s website reads, “It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen. Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy. Please respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss. ‘Love Is All That Matters…Faithful and Forever.’”

Carmen first entered the spotlight as the leader of the Raspberries, who had a top-five single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972 with “Go All The Way.” The group disbanded in 1975, after which Carmen pursued a successful solo career. His debut single was 1975’s “All By Myself,” which ended up being the highest-charting song of his discography with a peak at No. 2. His most enduring hit, though, is the 1987 Dirty Dancing soundtrack favorite, “Hungry Eyes.” The song peaked at No. 4 but has become a defining song of the ’80s and has nearly half a billion streams on Spotify, by far Carmen’s biggest success on the platform.

Carman’s sixth and final album was 2000’s I Was Born To Love You.
