The Best Vinyl Releases Of February 2024

vinyl
Uproxx

Anybody who thought the vinyl resurgence was just a fad was mistaken: The industry has experienced a legitimate revival. As a result, music fans are interested in physical media in ways they may not have if the decades-old medium hasn’t made a comeback. That doesn’t mean everybody is listening to just their parents’ old music, though. That’s part of it, sure, thanks to rereleases that present classic albums in new ways. A vital part of the renewed vinyl wave, though, is new projects being released as records, of which there are plenty.

Whatever you might be into, each month brings a new slew of vinyl releases that has something for everybody. Some stand out above the rest, naturally, so check out some of our favorite vinyl releases of February below.

Paul McCartney & Wings — Band On The Run (50th Anniversary Edition)

Band On The Run vinyl
UMe

The end of The Beatles was a sad moment for music, but the silver lining was that it led to Paul McCartney forming Wings, a band that enjoyed a beloved run of its own. The group’s defining third album, 1973’s Band On The Run, turned 50 recently, so now we have a new vinyl reissue of the album. The 2LP edition includes a treat for fans: an “Underdubbed” Mixes Edition of the album, of which McCartney himself explains, “This is Band On The Run in a way you’ve never heard before. When you are making a song and putting on additional parts, like an extra guitar, that’s an overdub. Well, this version of the album is the opposite, underdubbed.”

Amy Winehouse — Frank (Reissue)

Amy Winhouse Frank vinyl
UMe

We lost Amy Winehouse far too soon, but the pair of albums she left behind is special. It all started with Frank in 2003 and the album turned 20 years old recently. To celebrate, we now have the coolest-looking version of the album, a lovely new picture disc vinyl pressing.

The Who — Quadrophenia (Reissue) and The Who By Numbers (Reissue)

Who Quadrophenia
UMe

The Who were masters when it came to making music that rewards close listening. Now, the sonic details of two of the group’s finest albums, Quadrophenia and The Who By Numbers, can be enjoyed better than ever with these new vinyl reissues, which got a half-speed mastering for the occasion.

Get Quadrophenia here. Get The Who By Numbers here.

Issac Hayes — Hot Buttered Soul (Reissue)

isaac hayes vinyl
Craft Recordings

As part of their Small Batch vinyl series, Craft Recordings has come through with an audiophile-friendly version of an Isaac Hayes classic, which features lacquers cut from the original tapes. Ultimately, Craft proclaims this release to be “as close as the listener can get to the original recording.” As the name of the reissue series suggests, this isn’t one to take your time with, as it’s limited to only 3,000 copies. The overall packaging of the reissue is also stunning.

Idles — Tangk

Idles Tangk vinyl
Partisan

Uproxx’s Grant Sharples wrote of the latest album from UK rockers Idles, “The Bristol post-punk band Idles used to operate in one mode: loud, abrasive, and often furious. Their sheer volume was their main signifier, but now they’ve partially softened up, adding more subtlety to their anthemic tunes. On Tangk, their fifth record, the intensity remains, but rather than going in a purely punk direction, they make their noisy guitars and unrelenting drums a bit more rhythmic.”

If that sounds good to you, the band is selling the LP in a number of neat-colored vinyl editions.

Get it here.

John Coltrane — A Love Supreme (VMP Edition)

Coltrane Love Supreme vinyl
Vinyl Me, Please

Reissue kings Vinyl Me, Please have an impressive new edition of the John Coltrane classic A Love Supreme. It’s one for completionists: The 8LP box set features the album itself, as well as “every live and alternate take.” If you wanted the ultimate experience of one of jazz’s most iconic recordings, this is it.

Grandaddy — Blu Wav

Grandaddy Blu Wav vinyl
Dangerbird Records

After some time away, Grandaddy has been back at it over the past few years. February yielded the indie favorites’ sixth album, Blu Wav, and the blue marble vinyl pressing is a gorgeous way to enjoy it.

MGMT — Loss Of Life

MGMT Loss Of Life vinyl
Mom + Pop

Similarly, MGMT also pressed their latest LP on some vibrant vinyl colors, like the tangerine version seen above. In her review of the project, Uproxx’s Carolyn Droke wrote, “As a whole, Loss Of Life shows MGMT have gone full circle and come back to their foundations as an indie band, both sonically by shedding the dark melodies of 2018’s Little Dark Age in favor of a more buoyant sound, and literally by signing to an independent record label.”

Get it here.

Usher — Coming Home

Usher Coming Home vinyl
gamma

Usher had a bigger February than anybody with his Super Bowl Halftime Show and his new album, Coming Home. The performance was the headline news, but if you’re not sleeping on the new LP, Usher has it available on slick clear vinyl.

Helado Negro — Phasor

Helado Negro Phasor
4AD

Helado Negro has been consistently rock-solid for over a decade now, busting out a new album usually at least every couple years since 2009. His eighth LP, Phasor, arrived earlier this month, and you have options in terms of vinyl aesthetics. There’s the “coke bottle translucent green” pressing pictured above, or a standard black if you’re more of a tried-and-true traditionalist.

Adam Sandler Admits He Is ‘Jumpy’ Around Taylor Swift: ‘I Don’t Want To Blow It’

Adam Sandler has worked with numerous A-list stars over the years, like Jennifer Aniston in Murder Mystery or Paul Blart in Paul Blart: Mall Cop but nobody has caught him off guard quite as much as Taylor Swift. To be fair, she is worth far more than our minds can even comprehend. So being in that presence has got to trigger something in the brain.

Sandler joined Conan O’Brien for an episode of his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend when he was asked who leaves him star-struck. “You know what — Taylor Swift,” he said, though it isn’t because of her world-famous songwriting or her stance on demons. It’s because he is a dad who doesn’t want to embarrass his kids. “Because what she means to my kids, I get it a little f–kin’ jumpy. Just ’cause I don’t wanna blow it for my kids. So I’m a little like ‘Taylor, Taylor,’ like I talk a little too loud or something. I don’t stay as cool as I can,” he admitted while wearing matching a powder blue tracksuit and Hawaiian t-shirt. Why does he think he’s not cool?

Sandler attended both Swift’s concert and film premiere last year, and he proudly wears the covered blue Eras Tour crew neck, the mark of a true fan. But he admitted that he’s fascinated with her stardom.

“People talk about The Beatles of it all and her. I mean, man, so many smash hits,” he said, probably referring to “Cruel Summer” but we’ll never know. He added, “There’s not a word my kids don’t know.” Perhaps one day Sandler and Swift will unite for a fun cover.

Elizabeth Hurley Gets Steamy With Another Woman In The Trailer For A Movie Directed By Her Son

Since her five-year run where she starred in two comedies I have seen approximately 800 times each, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Bedazzled actress Elizabeth Hurley hasn’t appeared in a ton of movies. Her filmography of late is a lot of holiday stuff, including Father Christmas Is Back and Christmas in Paradise where she plays a character named… Joanna Christmas. You can’t see it, but I’m giving that name a standing ovation.

Is it time for an Elizabeth Hurley renaissance, like the one her Bedazzled co-star Brendan Fraser got? I’m here for it, although she probably isn’t winning an Oscar for Strictly Confidential, a fun-looking campy mystery directed by her son, Damian. You can watch the trailer for the “sensual thriller with a devilish twist” above, including a scene where Hurley makes out with another woman. That must’ve been a very normal day on set for the Hurleys.

Here’s more:

Mia is haunted by the suicide of her best friend, Rebecca. Reluctantly, she accepts an invitation from Rebecca’s family to their home in the Caribbean, where her college friends are assembling to commemorate Rebecca on the anniversary of her death. Once on the island, Mia is plagued by suspicions that there’s more to Rebecca’s death than meets the eye; gradually, she learns that both Rebecca’s family and each of the guests are harboring a deadly secret, all with direct ties to Rebecca. Mia delves into Rebecca’s past, desperate to uncover what really happened that fateful day last summer. As more deceptions come to light, Mia finds herself drawn into a world of sex, duplicity and betrayal. Despite the dangers that lurk at every corner, Mia is relentless, determined to uncover the truth… but at what cost?

Strictly Confidential is in theaters and on digital on April 5.

Kacey Musgraves Has The Most Relatable Request In ‘Too Good To Be True,’ Her New Single

On February 8, Kacey Musgraves released “Deeper Well,” the title track of her forthcoming album. In the acoustic-based song, Musgraves sang about “saying goodbye to the people / That I feel are real good at wasting my time.” This morning, February 29, Musgraves released “Too Good To Be True,” which outlines the most relatable and simple request that could prevent the wasting of time.

Also an acoustic song highlighting Musgraves’ strengths as a songwriter, “Too Good To Be True” opens with Musgraves describing simplistic luxuries on a Monday morning (“Made some breakfast, made some love”) before the chorus finds her as vulnerable as ever, singing, “Please don’t make me regret / Openin’ up that part of myself / That I’ve been scared to give again / Be good to me, and I’ll be good to you / But please don’t be too good to be true.”

Both songs deliver on Musgraves promised listeners could expect from the record.

“I didn’t know what kind of record I was going to make,” Musgraves said in a statement upon the title track’s release. “Other than the fact that it was going to be soft and organic and honest. My songwriting roots. And about less meaning more. But beyond that, this album is about who I am in love, and what I’m looking for. The songs are very spiritual. I was seeking some different environmental energy for this project, and Electric Lady has the best mojo.”

Deeper Well is due out March 15 via Interscope/MCA Nashville. Ahead of release day, Musgraves will serve as the musical guest on a Sydney Sweeney-hosted SNL episode this Saturday, March 2. Musgraves simultaneously announced her Deeper Well World Tour alongside dropping “Too Good To Be True.”
