Globetrotting pop star Dua Lipa has been fittingly unveiled as YSL Beauty’s new Global Makeup Ambassador, which includes the launch of a new makeup campaign and a continued partnership between the two.

In Lipa’s recent music video for “Training Season,” she rocked the YSL Beauty Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick product, which is launching today as an introduction of what’s to come. This will be followed by the Loveshine franchise, which includes the new Lip Oil Stick product release.

“For me, fragrances and makeup are another form of self-expression, a way to explore my playfulness, my creativity, and my individuality,” Lipa shared in a statement. “I am thrilled to be on this journey as part of the YSL Beauty family.”

“Dua Lipa brings an electrifying energy to our brand, inspiring women to not just wear makeup, but to make a statement about who they are and what they stand for,” Stephan Bezy, YSL Beauty’s International General Manager, added. “Her influence is a celebration of individuality, a statement of empowerment, encouraging everyone to embrace their unique beauty with confidence.”

Lipa previously served as the Global Ambassador for YSL Beauty’s Libre fragrance since 2019, but now she will be taking over the makeup sector as well. YSL Beauty’s Loveshine will debut online in the US on March 15, and available in stores later next month.

MGMT Return To Their Indie Roots With ‘Loss Of Life’

MGMT loss of life the rx

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

Before taking the stage to perform the entirety of their debut album Oracular Spectacular at Just Like Heaven Fest 2023, MGMT acted out a skit about how they wrote their breakout track “Kids.” They were sitting in a dorm room in 2002 and deciding whether or not they should try to be cool and hit up the frat party down the street. “No, let’s stay inside and make music instead,” they said.

That moment was over twenty years ago. What would they tell their younger selves now if they could go back in time to 2002? The duo — Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser — answered that question at an album release Q&A in Los Angeles the night before their fifth studio album Loss Of Life dropped. They first joked they would be surprised they were only releasing their fifth album (“That’s it? It’s been twenty years!”). But in all seriousness, MGMT would be glad they’re still around. VanWyngarden in particular thought they would have barely lasted as a band after college graduation.

A lot has happened since VanWyngarden and Goldwasser were holed up in a dorm room and messing around on a keyboard. They were quickly shot into indie stardom, something VanWyngarden noted during the Q&A took them nearly 15 years not to be “f*cked up” about. They’ve achieved commercial success and lived the rockstar lifestyles they satirized in their early music (dating models, staying in mansions, rubbing elbows with other celebrities). But with Loss Of Life, an album that’s purposely cyclical, MGMT return to their indie roots.

Loss Of Life marks the band’s exit from a major label in favor of indie rock favorite Mom + Pop Records. Now, they’re getting back to the heart of writing experimental indie rock songs in a way that feels like a matured return to form. With songs like the stand-out single “Mother Nature,” MGMT is doing what MGMT does best; penning swelling ballads that offer obscure-yet-poetic reflections on big-picture themes like love in the modern age and accepting that death is a part of the cycle of life.

The album’s cyclical nature is first apparent in the tracklisting. Seemingly flipped, the project kicks off with the recorded spoken word track “Loss Of Life (part 2)” and concludes with the poignant “Loss Of Life” (a song so heartfelt VanWyngarden teared up in the booth while recording). The opening track is a recording of the 13th-century Welsh poem I am Taliesin. I sing perfect metre, which speaks to reincarnation. “Mother Nature” follows the spoken prose, a nostalgia-inducing ballad which can be summarized as accepting ebbs and flows of pain and pleasure as they get older. “We both turned 40 while making this album, and we wanted to find a way to retain our light-hearted, playful approach to things but to challenge ourselves to have more of a sincere and hopeful message,” VanWyngarden told Billboard about making the album.

At a stage in their lives when they can finally be in a place of acceptance, Loss Of Life is one of their most serious (and most beautiful) records to date. “Nothing Changes” saunters through lyrics about the static tendencies of human nature and the urge to translate perceived signs from the universe into meaning. Meanwhile, their Christine And The Queens collaboration “Dancing In Babylon” (their first duet to ever make it on an album) is a vibrant piano ballad-turned-disco-pop number. MGMT say it was the last song written for the album, while the existential call-to-arms track “People In The Streets” was the first and set the tone for the album overall.

But even still, MGMT are able to lean into the playful silliness of their early projects. This is in part thanks to the duo revisiting early aughts demos while rehearsing for the aforementioned Just Like Heaven set and attempting to recreate some of that magic. Plus, VanWyngarden watched Goldwasser play a lot of the video game Elden Ring while writing Loss Of Life, which is why imagery of castles sneak into songs like “Mother Nature” and “Nothing To Declare.” The song “Bubblegum Dog” is a warbled and nonsensical psych-infused alt-rock song characterized by MGMT’s recognizable harpsichord melodies, ridiculous lyrics, and an accompanying video that VanWyngarden admits cheekily play into “fan lore and conspiracies.” “I Wish I Was Joking” may be a chilled-out track on the surface, but proves the band was having fun in the studio. With a watery effect over his voice, VanWyngarden laments about “municipal parking” and “six dollar coffee” before closing out with a reverb-heavy laugh track.

As a whole, Loss Of Life shows MGMT have gone full circle and come back to their foundations as an indie band, both sonically by shedding the dark melodies of 2018’s Little Dark Age in favor of a more buoyant sound, and literally by signing to an independent record label. They manage to bring a familiar whimsy to their music while finding peace with big existential ideas. While Loss Of Life may have overt themes of death and rebirth, one theme is omnipresent throughout the record: love. In fact, the final words VanWyngarden sings on album-closer “Loss Of Life” is a hopeful message: “Anyone can love.”

Loss Of Life is out now via Mom + Pop. Find more information here.

‘American Psycho’ Is Reportedly Getting A Remake, And People Know Exactly Who Should Play Patrick Bateman

american psycho
Lionsgate Films

Back in 2016, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis wrote an article for Town and Country about what serial killer Patrick Bateman would be up to now. “I think that if I had written the book in the past decade, perhaps Bateman would have been working in Silicon Valley,” he wrote. Easton Ellis imagined Bateman palling around with Mark Zuckerberg and using Tinder to find his next victim. We may soon find out, for better or worse.

Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider reports that Lionsgate is plotting “a new American Psycho movie” set in the modern day. That’s a departure from director Mary Herron’s 2000 film, which satirized the 1980s through Christian Bale’s Sports by Huey Lewis and the News-loving investment banker. Following that same formula would set the reboot/remake/whatever in the early 2010s.

Leaving aside the question of whether there should be a new American Psycho (look to American Psycho 2 to see how things can go terribly wrong), who should play Patrick Bateman in the remake? Social media has some ideas.

But really, there’s only one choice.

If the American Psycho remake gets Glenn Howerton the Oscar nomination he deserved for Blackberry, it will have all been worth it.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm
Getty Image

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw SZA tease her anticipated deluxe edition of SOS and Selena Gomez have some fun as she continues her musical comeback. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

SZA — “Saturn”

At some point, SZA is planning to drop Lana, an upcoming deluxe of SOS. We don’t know yet when that’s coming out, but she did preview it last week with the celestial single “Saturn.”

Selena Gomez — “Love On”

Gomez has some big plans on her new single, “Love On.” On the upbeat and super-fun (“Why are we conversin’ over this steak tartare / When we could be somewhere other than here makin’ out in the back of a car”) tune, Gomez sings about all the things she’d like to do with a special someone once she turns her love on.

Saweetie — “Richtivities”

Saweetie continues to honor the music that came before her on “Richtivities,” her first single of the year. As Uproxx’s Aaron Williams notes, the song sees Saweetie choosing “to lean into hip-hop history with a soulful sample that sounds like it was inspired by DJ Paul and Juicy J’s beat for UGK’s ‘International Players Anthem (I Choose You).’”

Justin Timberlake — “Drown”

Timberlake is launching his new album, Everything I Thought It Was, in less than a month now. Like “Selfish” before it, last week’s new single “Drown” sees Timberlake getting into his emotional bag, although the theme here is less about devotion and more about betrayal.

Lil Durk — “Old Days”

The streets are getting some love songs soon with Lil Durk’s Love Songs 4 The Streets 3. He teased the new project days ago with “Old Days,” on which he reflects on his past and desire for peace.

Khruangbin — “May Ninth”

Vibe gods Khruangbin have A LA SALA dropping in a little over a month, but the important date of last week was “May Ninth,” a new single from the group that creates a groovy and relaxing atmosphere.

Lil Yachty — “Something Ether”

Lil Yachty has been trying out pretty much every musical style around lately, and he took another new step last week with “Something Ether.” Uproxx’s Aaron Williams writes of the new song, “Yachty smashes together noise rap and dubstep on ‘Something Ether,’ a glitchy, industrial banger sure to turn those traditionalists against him but garner an even wider variety of rage-ready fans.”

Earthgang — “Perfect Fantasy” Feat. Snoop Dogg

Almost exactly two years after the 2022 album Ghetto Gods, and a few months since they dropped the EP Earthgang Vs. The Algorithm: RIP Human Art, Earthgang has returned with another EP, Robophobia. As it seems, the group continues their trek into tech-inspired themes, and they linked up with Snoop Dogg on the soulful “Perfect Fantasy.”

Free Nationals, ASAP Rocky, and Anderson .Paak — “Gangsta”

Free Nationals reunited with frequent collaborator Anderson .Paak and brought ASAP Rocky into the fold with last week’s “Gangsta.” The song is built on a psychedelic soul groove and the video is a ton of fun, too, featuring younger versions of the artists getting involved in miscellaneous mischief.

Adrianne Lenker — “Fool”

Lenker is just as serious in her work with Big Thief as she is in her solo career, which continues next month with the release of Bright Future, a new album. What’s not the most serious thing is her video for “Fool,” a fun visual that features dancing cowboys, dogs in tutus, and other silliness abound.

The ‘Fast & Furious’ Franchise Races Toward An End As Vin Diesel Teases A ‘Grand Finale’

vin diesel fast x

Vin Diesel has emerged to let fans know that Christopher Nolan’s favorite film series is still full steam ahead with Dom Toretto in the driver seat.

In December, Diesel was sued by a former assistant who accused the Fast & Furious star of sexual battery while filming the Fast Five in 2010. The woman also accused Diesel of firing her in retaliation for refusing his advances. In a statement to Vanity Fair, Diesel’s attorney “categorically denied this claim in its entirety” and claimed to have “clear evidence which completely refutes these outlandish allegations.” The lawsuit is still active as of this writing.

After news of the allegations broke, Diesel has kept a low profile until now. In a new Instagram post, the actor got to work touting the final installment in the Fast & Furious series and, more notably, confirmed his participation.

“Just finished our end of the week Fast meeting with the writers and the whole team,” Diesel wrote. “To say the excitement for our finale was incredibly powerful is an understatement. Wow. So exciting…”

While everyone was heading into the weekend amped and excited, I thought of you all… reminded of the countless moments when your enthusiasm and passion became the driving force behind our creative journey. Your commitment to our saga has had a unique impact on its success and evolution… as my youngest daughter would say, it’s profound.

Thank you for being the backbone of this global saga that because of you, transcends the screen.

This grand finale is not just an ending; it’s a celebration of the incredible family we’ve built together.

Diesel signed off by saying, “Hope to make you proud!” You can see his Instagram message below:

Fast XI is currently set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.

Steven Hyden’s Favorite Music Of February 2024

Hyden's Faves
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Every month, Uproxx cultural critic Steven Hyden makes an unranked list of his favorite music-related items released during this period — songs, albums, books, films, you name it.

1. Vampire Weekend, “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops”

A signature band of 21st century indie announced their return this month with two new songs from a forthcoming album, Only God Was Above Us, due in April. They are decidedly different from one another — “Capricorn” is a lurching shuffle undergirded by an acoustic guitar strum that sounds borrowed from a late-’60s Kinks record, while “Gen-X Cops” is a surf-rock rave-up with a screechingly overheated slide-guitar riff. But taken together, they offer a clear indication that the California crunchiness of Father Of The Bride has been set aside for now. This will no doubt please fans of VW’s NYC-centric pre-FOTB output, though as a FOTB fan I’m also pleased to hear that this band’s careful songcraft and exquisite production taste remains as unerring as ever.

2. DIIV, “Brown Paper Bag”

On my weekly indie-rock podcast and elsewhere, I have been bullish on the future of this somewhat star-crossed shoegaze band. In the 2010s, they weathered personal issues and changing musical tides while amassing a quietly excellent discography of three albums, including their most recent effort, 2019’s Deceiver. They have a devoted following, but they still seem a little unsung. And this was all before I heard their upcoming album, Frog In Boiling Water, due in May. I’m going to keep my specific thoughts on the record to myself for now, but I’ll just say that ranks among the very best albums I have heard so far in 2024. The single “Brown Paper Bag” is the lead-off track, and it’s a good indicator of the record’s quality.

3. Liquid Mike, Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot

I knew I was going to love this album when I got to the sixth track and noticed that it quoted my favorite scene from the 1999 documentary American Movie. For those that haven’t seen it: American Movie is about an aspiring filmmaker from Milwaukee who is trying to overcome forces external (his unsupportive family, his lower-middle-class circumstances) and internal (alcoholism, a tendency to self-sabotage) to make his cinematic masterpiece, Northwestern. It makes sense that Liquid Mike — a band that hails from Michigan’s remote Upper Peninsula — would relate to this movie. Principal songwriter Mike Maple is another talented Midwestern striver who is simultaneously fascinated by the mundane particulars of small-town life and scared-to-death that it might swallow him whole. Oh, and I have mentioned the music yet? I doubt you will find a sharper power-pop record this year, particularly if you wish Guided By Voices sounded more like Everclear.

4. Jessica Pratt, “Life Is”

So many album announcements this month from acts who haven’t put out new music since the Trump administration! This is the first single from Here In The Pitch, which will be out in May, and it’s exactly what you would expect from this enigmatic, out-of-time master — it sounds like she’s singing in a lonely room situated inside of an ancient hotel populated by poets, junkies, and immaculately debauched rock stars from 1967. In other words: Perfect.

5. Amen Dunes, “Purple Land”

Who wants another new album from a respected indie act that was last heard from several years ago? Back in 2018, Amen Dunes put out one of the great indie-rock albums of the last 10 years, Freedom. On that record, Damon McMahon seemed like he was transitioning to a more mainstream sound, displaying a penchant for anthemic guitar jams that soared to exhilarating pay-offs. But on his upcoming LP due in May, Death Jokes, McMahon pivots back to a more experimental and introverted style that’s as unsettling as the title suggests. I’m still wrapping my head around it, frankly, but it’s been a fascinating journey.

6. MGMT, Loss Of Life

These brilliant pranksters always wait four or five years between albums, which is just long enough for people to think, “Oh, these guys are pretty good” and then immediately forget about it until the next album. To me they are the Steely Dan of blog rock — a very smart duo who met at an elite East Coast college and then stumbled into unlikely pop success, after which they grew even more perverse. Loss Of Life actually kind of sounds like Steely Dan at times — there are a lot of soft rock moves and tons of fretless bass. It is another Congratulations-style curveball after 2018’s Little Dark Age, which was their straightest album since Oracular Spectacular. MGMT once again is acting like a band who had two huge hits right out of the gate, and now gets to play with house money.

7. Real Estate, Daniel

As is the case with MGMT, acknowledging that Real Estate is now a legacy act that has put out albums in three different decades creates a shock of mortality akin to the “Matt Damon ages into an old man at the end of Saving Private Ryan” meme. Wasn’t it only yesterday that these New Jersey dream-poppers were writing nostalgic tunes about the suburbs during the Obama administration? With Daniel, Real Estate once again clarify that their M.O. is refining rather than revolutionizing their sound. Martin Courtney writes very pretty guitar pop songs, and his band plays those songs like The Feelies after downing a pleasant edible. Daniel evinces all of the good things about growing older, and none of the bad ones. If you like Real Estate, the album delivers.

8. Hovvdy, “Forever”

This Texas duo makes strummy folk-rock songs that feel like cozy back-porch hangs. It’s the kind of music that you can easily waste an afternoon listening to over and over. So it’s good that their forthcoming record is a self-titled double album, which drops on April 26. The single is called “Forever,” and it’s lovely.

9. Memorytown, It Takes Forever

Speaking of cozy jams, this Philadelphia band is a side project for Matt Schimelfenig, who also plays in the band Gladie along with producing scores of other groups. With Memorytown, he makes chunky heartland rock music that’s perfect for an unseasonably warm winter. Their latest It Takes Forever is a winner.

Is Reba McEntire Leaving ‘The Voice?’

Country superstar Reba McEntire has been a judge on NBC’s The Voice since last year after she replaced Blake Shelton. According to Newsweek, she was initially offered the role in 2011, turned it down, but then returned to be a “Mega Advisor” during Season 23. Since joining the judging panel, she has helped pick and help singers who choose to be on her team.

Recently, however, fans had been wondering if she was leaving the show, following some articles that were apparently making the rounds. It also is just ahead of Season 25 of The Voice starting this weekend, which raised questions if this would be McEntire’s last.

Here’s what to know.

Is Reba McEntire Leaving The Voice?

Following some of the rumors, McEntire hopped on Twitter (now X) to set the record straight — both regarding her future on The Voice… and that companies were apparently using her to sell types of “gummy products” for some reason.

“Please do not click on any articles that say I am leaving The Voice,” she wrote. “This is not true. These are fake websites to lure people in with clickbait where they claim I have a company to sell weight loss gummy products. This is false. I do not sell or promote any type of gummy product.” So, it looks like McEntire has no plans to leave the show just yet — or sell you bogus weight loss products.

Drake Shows Support For Tory Lanez, Who’s Currently In Prison Over The Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

Tory Lanez is currently in prison, serving a sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. He still has his supporters, though, and it would appear fellow Toronto rapper Drake is one of them.

Late last night/early this morning, Drake took to his Instagram Story to share a photo of Lanez, which he captioned, “3 you.” Some have interpreted “3 you” to mean “free you,” with the 3 apparently symbolizing open handcuffs. Others believe the post’s meaning is more like “love you.” Either way, the post seems to be a sign of support.

In late 2022, Drake caused a bit of controversy with a lyric that seemingly went after Megan. On Her Loss song “Circo Loco,” Drake raps, “This b*tch lie ’bout getting shot but she still a stallion,” which was widely interpreted to be about Meg. Shortly after the song was released, Megan tweeted, “Stop using my shooting for clout b*tch ass N****s! Since when tf is it cool to joke abt women getting shot ! You n****s especially RAP N****S ARE LAME! Ready to boycott bout shoes and clothes but dog pile on a black woman when she say one of y’all homeboys abused her.”

For years, there was beef between Drake and Lanez, but the two ultimately made up in 2017. Drake brought Lanez out during a performance and said, “This guy right here, we had problems with each other and we hadn’t even met each other. I met the man and he’s a great guy.”

Donald Trump Is Finally Focusing On The Real Issues: Deporting Prince Harry For ‘Betraying’ The Queen

Donald Trump
Getty Image

As the head of the Republican Party, Donald Trump stopped by CPAC over the weekend where he let voters know that his second presidency will be focused on the issues that deeply affect ordinary American. Namely, deporting Prince Harry because he wasn’t nice to the Queen or whatever.

“I wouldn’t protect him,” Trump boasted to the Daily Express U.S. “He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.”

Trump’s remarks stem from a lawsuit filed against the Department of Homeland Security by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, that’s convinced Prince Harry lied about his past drug use to obtain a visa. The Biden administration has kept Prince Harry’s visa application confidential, which is apparently a hot button issue for conservatives who want Harry out of the country. Why? Well, his wife Meghan Markle criticized Trump, so he’s gotta go.

But deporting British royalty wasn’t the only thing on Trump’s mind this weekend. The former president also lashed out at another kitchen table issue: All the criminal charges against him.

Via Truth Social:

The Very Strict Rules and Regulations of the Department of Injustice STATE CLEARLY that you can’t prosecute a Political Opponent, or anyone, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS/HER CAMPAIGN. Why didn’t they bring these FAKE Charges THREE YEARS AGO? That would have solved all of their problems. (The answer is that they AIMED for the various trials to come up during my campaign for President, 2024!). This includes DOJ subservient “subsidiaries” like local D.A. & A.G. Offices. In other words, all of these FAKE POLITICAL PROSECUTIONS (PERSECUTIONS!) OF CROOKED JOE BIDEN’S POLITICAL OPPONENT MUST BE IMMEDIATELY HALTED!

Remember a vote for Trump is a vote for kicking Prince Harry out of the country and total 100% immunity from all crimes, but only for Donald Trump.
