Sterling K. Brown Unabashedly Fanned Out Over His ‘Little Mermaid’ Halle Bailey On The 2024 SAG Awards Pre-Ceremony Carpet

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards featured several notable moments. From Barbra Streisand’s Life Achievement Award speech to Pedro Pascal being swept up in Ciara’s beauty and even Billie Eilish signing superfan Melissa McCarthy’s face, the ceremony had something for all to enjoy.

But the most sincere moment occurred during the event’s preshow when Sterling K. Brown and his wife (fellow actor) Ryan Michelle Bathe paused their interview to praise Halle Bailey. As the couple spoke with Entertainment Tonight, Brown unabashedly fanned out over Bailey, specifically, her performance in 2023’s The Little Mermaid (directed by Rob Marshall). Watch the full clip below.

Brown displayed his inner thespian with an impromptu reenactment of Bailey’s recreating the mermaid’s infamous water hair flip. Although Bailey was there as a cast nominee for The Color Purple, she didn’t mind chatting about her box office smash as the fictional Princess Ariel. As Bailey relived the moment, Brown’s kind words began to sink in; she was nearly moving to tears.

Bailey didn’t leave with a trophy but still enjoyed herself, according to her post on X (formerly Twitter). “I was so honored to be nominated with my beautiful ‘Color Purple’ cast and family,” she wrote. “Such a fun night.”

One ‘SNL’ Musician’s Stony Reaction To Shane Gillis’ Rocky Opening Monologue Turned Some Heads

SNL Shane Gillis
NBC

On Saturday Shane Gillis made his belated SNL debut. Why belated? Because the first time the comic was supposed to appear he got fired, after people dug up a litany of racist and sexist jokes he’d made prior to scoring a cast member gig. Since then he’s become something of a big star — big enough, with his hit Netflix special, that he was asked to come back, this time as host. Sure enough, his opening monologue included some touchy stuff, so much so that one musician behind him appeared to be quietly fuming.

Per Newsweek, some people on social media focused in on a young, red-haired guitarist who spent the majority of Gillis’ seven-minute soliloquy — during which he made gay jokes and jokes about down syndrome relatives — sitting still with a stony expression frozen on her face.

“Man, this woman in the SNL band is staring daggers at Shane Gillis throughout his entire monologue,” one person tweeted/Xed. “Just completely and thoroughly displeased.”

Some thought that was a good sign that Gillis bombed.

Some compared the evidently displeased musician to another person not enjoying a very different show.

Throughout his monologue, Gillis mostly talked about his family, including his parents, who were in the audience. He talked about how as a kid he was like his mom’s “gay best friend.” He also discussed his niece, who was born with down syndrome, joking that he could have had it as well. “I dodged it, but it nicked me,” he told the crowd.

Gillis also teasingly addressed the elephant in the room. “I was fired from this show a while ago,” he said at the start of his monologue. “But, you know, don’t look that up, please. If you don’t know who I am, please don’t Google that. It’s fine. Don’t even worry about it.

“I probably shouldn’t even be up here, honestly,” he joked.

Elsewhere in the episode Gillis starred in a fake trailer that dragged Trump but good for his ridiculous $400 gold sneakers.

You can watch Gillis’ monologue in the video below.

What will Earth look like if all its land ice melts? Here’s your answer.

Land ice: We got a lot of it.

Considering the two largest ice sheets on earth — the one on Antarctica and the one on Greenland — extend more than 6 million square miles combined … yeah, we’re talkin’ a lot of ice.

But what if it was all just … gone? Not like gone gone, but melted?

If all of earth’s land ice melted, it would be nothing short of disastrous.

And that’s putting it lightly.

This video by Business Insider Science (seen below) depicts exactly what our coastlines would look like if all the land ice melted. And spoiler alert: It isn’t great.

Lots of European cities like, Brussels and Venice, would be basically underwater.

In Africa and the Middle East? Dakar, Accra, Jeddah — gone.

Millions of people in Asia, in cities like Mumbai, Beijing, and Tokyo, would be uprooted and have to move inland.

South America would say goodbye to cities like Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.

And in the U.S., we’d watch places like Houston, San Francisco, and New York City — not to mention the entire state of Florida — slowly disappear into the sea.

All GIFs via Business Insider Science/YouTube.

Business Insider based these visuals off National Geographic’s estimation that sea levels will rise 216 feet (!) if all of earth’s land ice melted into our oceans.

There’s even a tool where you can take a detailed look at how your community could be affected by rising seas, for better or worse.

Although … looking at these maps, it’s hard to imagine “for better” is a likely outcome for many of us.

Much of America’s most populated regions would be severely affected by rising sea levels, as you’ll notice exploring the map, created by Alex Tingle using data provided by NASA.

Take, for instance, the West Coast. (Goodbye, San Fran!)

Or the East Coast. (See ya, Philly!)

And the Gulf Coast. (RIP, Bourbon Street!)

I bring up the topic not just for funsies, of course, but because the maps above are real possibilities.

How? Climate change.

As we continue to burn fossil fuels for energy and emit carbon into our atmosphere, the planet gets warmer and warmer. And that, ladies and gentlemen, means melted ice.

A study published this past September by researchers in the U.S., U.K., and Germany found that if we don’t change our ways, there’s definitely enough fossil fuel resources available for us to completely melt the Antarctic ice sheet.

Basically, the self-inflicted disaster you see above is certainly within the realm of possibility.

“This would not happen overnight, but the mind-boggling point is that our actions today are changing the face of planet Earth as we know it and will continue to do so for tens of thousands of years to come,” said lead author of the study Ricarda Winkelmann, of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

If we want to stop this from happening,” she says, “we need to keep coal, gas, and oil in the ground.”

The good news? Most of our coastlines are still intact! And they can stay that way, too — if we act now.

World leaders are finally starting to treat climate change like the global crisis that it is — and you can help get the point across to them, too.

A Selena Gomez Superfan Hilariously Obliterated The Singer In A Game About Her Own Life On ‘Kimmel’

Since her acting debut on Barney & Friends in 2002, Selena Gomez has been in the limelight. But the “Love On” singer’s stint on Disney channel made her a household name. Now, the multi-hyphenated entertainer has amassed an army of devoted superfans, the Selenators, eagerly following her career moves.

On Friday, February 23, one lifelong supporter put their knowledge of the Only Murders In The Building star to the test in a game of Who Knows Selena Gomez? on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The contestant, Ashley Mendoza, confessed that she’s been following Gomez’s work as far back as Wizards of Waverly Place. The dedication proved valuable as she hilariously obliterated Gomez in trivia about her own life.

Before host Kimbegangins the game, Gomez jokingly confessed that she wasn’t even sure she qualified to play. “I don’t even know myself,” she said.

The first two questions were a breeze for Mendoza as she just barely beat Gomez to the buzzer. However, by the third question, it was clear the trivia game would be a sweep or close to it. When Kimmel asked both ladies, “What does Selena mean in Greek,” Mendoza swooped in with the correct answer yet again. Gomez, clearly stumped, admitted that she wasn’t aware of the meaning of her name in the Mediterranean language.

By the end, Gomez closed the gap a bit with a final score of 80 to 50, thanks to the questions about her little sister, Gracie. Ultimately, Mendoza walked away with the victory but was more excited to spend time with her favorite artist than securing the win.

Father of the bride steals the show with his incredibly smooth dance moves

Father and daughter dances are a traditional staple of weddings. They tend to range somewhere between tearfully sweet and hilariously cringey. But sometimes, as was the case of Brittany Revell and her dad Kelly, they can be so freakin’ cool that millions of people become captivated.

Brittany and Kelly’s video, which amassed, I kid you not, more than 40 million views on TikTok, shows the pair grooving in sneakers (Brittany’s were white because, hello, wedding dress) to their “dance through the decades.”

It all began with Young MC’s “Bust a Move,” to give you a clear picture. And bust a move, they did.

Though the duo did a handful of iconic moves—the tootsie roll, the MC Hammer dance, the Carlton, just to name a few—“the dougie,” made famous by Cali Swag District, was the obvious fan favorite.

Brittany is clearly no stranger to busting a move and showed off her skills, but Kelly had the audience (and the internet) absolutely floored. He not only nailed every move, but kept a constant grin from ear to ear.

“Reason number 1838329194920 why I love my dad,” Brittany wrote in her caption.

People in the comments were quick to profess love for Kelly as well. Here are some gems:

“WHO IS THIS LEGEND!”

“I aspire to this level of smooth.”

“Pops got moves!!🔥”

“He really is the main character 🤩🤩”

Others shared praise to both dancers for delivering an unforgettable performance.

“I would absolutely lose my mind if I saw this at a wedding,” wrote one person.

“This is probably THE best TikTok I’ve ever seen. You and your dad are legit rockstars!! Congratulations!!” added another.

Brittany told The Morning Show on Channel 7 that she and Kelly have been learning dances together “for fun in the living room” since she was little. “He has always had some rhythm, but I did not know he could pick up the moves like that,” she quipped. Hey, there’s always something new to learn about dear old dad.

Brittany also shared in an interview with NBC News that people were responding to more than just impressive choreography—it touched them on a heartfelt level.

“I think it’s kind of unique to see a dad of Asian descent be able to open up, let loose and just embrace their American child’s music and culture,” she said, adding that several people who didn’t have relationships with their fathers commended how “inspiring” it was to see the fun Brittany and Kelly created, encouraging them to “be better with their future kids.”

Weddings are a celebration of love, and that can extend beyond the bride and groom. This father expressed his love on the dance floor, and it’s giving us all something to smile about.

Odds are Brittany and her dad are gonna keep posting even more amazing dance videos. You can keep up to date by following Brittany on TikTok here.

Canadian man captures the ‘one in a million’ moment when a moose sheds both its antlers

For those not well versed in moose facts, the shedding of antlers is normally a fairly lengthy process. It happens only once a year after mating season and usually consists of a moose losing one antler at a time.

It’s incredibly rare for a bull moose to lose both at the same time—and even more rare that someone would actually catch it on film.

That’s why shed hunter (yes, that’s a real term) and woodsman Derek Burgoyne calls his footage of the phenomenon a “one-in-a-million” shot.

According to The Guardian, Burgoyne was flying his drone through a remote patch of forest in Canada when he spotted three moose in a clearing. His drone followed one of the bulls, who began doing the wobbly little shake thing that signals these antlers are going bye-bye.

Burgoyne knew he had to keep his camera on the moment—but he had no idea that he’d hit the jackpot.

Watch below:

It’s hard to tell which is more fun to watch— the super rare moment in nature or Burgoyne’s pure passion for his hobby.

“I shook a little bit. It was an adrenaline rush for sure,“ he told CBC News, sharing that he has previously found hundreds of shed antlers in his life.

Antler hunting has become a hot and profitable pastime over the past few years, although Burgoyne affirms that his shed hunting ambitions are born from a desire for well-being, not monetary gain.

“I enjoy being in the woods. It’s great exercise and it’s fun tracking the moose through the winter and looking for their sheds in the spring. Each one you find feels like the first one. It never gets old,” he told The Guardian.

Well Derek Burgoyne, thank you for doing what you love. Thanks to your passion, we too can share this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Here’s to good moose news!

Rural Texas dad shares what he told his son when they saw a trans woman for the first time

A dad is sharing his first encounter with a transgender woman in his small Texas town, and the simple lesson he taught his son is inspiring hope in others.

James Eric Barlow (oddragon226 on TikTok) shared a video from his car describing how he and his son saw a trans woman in real life for the first time. “We all know that there’s people that are disgusted whenever they see a trans person,” Barlow begins. “And we all know of the people who don’t care if they see a trans person.

“But apparently, we’re a third type of person (or at least I am, I can’t speak for him),” he says, indicating his son in the backseat who chimes in with “I am, too!”

Barlow then goes on to explain how they had just had their first experience with a trans woman. It wasn’t anything major—she just walked through a door behind them and Barlow held the door for her, just as he would any other person. He didn’t even notice she was trans at first, but once he did, his immediate reaction was one we can all learn from.

“When I tell you how happy it made me,” he says, beginning to tear up, “to be able to see somebody be out and open to the world here in small town Texas. You just gotta know how much bravery that takes. Right, Mikey?”

“Hell yeah!” the son agrees.

Barlow wanted to say something to her, but he didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable, either.

“But if you’re a trans woman and you came here to the Landmark truck stop in Clyde, Texas, just know we’re proud of you,” he concludes.

Barlow’s video was shared on Reddit, where it’s received 37,000 upvotes and a slew of comments that prove parents set the tone for their kids’ sense of acceptance.

“When I was younger I would get my hair cut by a woman named Liz. She spoke Spanish so it was hard for to understand her English sometimes. My dad spoke Spanish so would translate for her and me. I noticed Liz looked a little different then other women. But I never said anything, I never felt any differently about her. She never scared me, or made me question anything. She was just Liz. As I got older I realized she was a trans woman. And it literally changed nothing. She was still just Liz. Liz was always kind and treated everyone warmly. I havnt seen her in years but I hope she is doing well. I really liked her.” – PerplexedPoppy

“This literally happened to me as a child in the 80s. A cashier at a store we visited suddenly started dressing in a feminine style and it appeared that they were transitioning. My mom explained to me in an age appropriate way that sometimes people decide they want to be a man instead of a woman, or a woman instead of a man. She told me that people would probably be mean to the cashier and it was important for us to remember that and always be polite to her, as we would anyway. This was way before trans issues were as mainstream as they are now, but my mom had seen an episode of Phil Donahue where transwoman discussed their stories, and she recognized it as a medical issue. Core memory for me.” – ZipCity262

“As a trans woman, im deathly afraid whenever I have to go to rural areas. I can instantly feel physical tension when I walk into a gas station or a restaurant in these areas. Thank you for being supportive. Trans people need you now more than ever.” – rainbow_lenses

It really is a simple matter to accept people as they are and treat all humans with dignity, kindness and respect, even if we don’t fully understand them. And as this dad and son show, it’s a simple matter to demonstrate non-judgmental acceptance in front of our kids so they hopefully will grow up without being bound by chains of bigotry they’ll later have to learn to unload.

Will There Be A ‘True Detective’ Season 5?

True Detective
HBO

It’s been of a roller coaster ride for True Detective fans. The first season stormed out of the gate, with a gruesome, years-spanning mystery, one mind-blowing long take, and two perfectly paired performers, both doing top shelf work. The second? Well, that was less beloved. The third got things back on track, and the fourth — which just ended last weekend — took things in a slightly different direction, even while catching the very public ire of the show’s original creator.

So will there be more in the crime anthology series? You betcha.

Per Deadline, not only will there by another season of True Detective, but it will be handled by the fourth season’s showrunner, Issa López. Lopez’s work on Night Country, which starred no less than Jodie Foster, earned strong reviews but also strong criticism from Nic Pizzolatto, who ran the show’s first three seasons. He called its callbacks to previous seasons “so stupid.” About any other complaints viewers might have, he said, simply, “Can’t blame me.”

López refused to fight back. Co-star Kali Reis, however, felt differently, taking to Twitter/X to write, “That’s a damn shame…but hey I guess ‘if you don’t have anything good to share, sh*t on others’ is the new wave.”

Obviously HBO has López’s back, because she’ll be back for more, presumably with another big star who doesn’t normally do television.

Jimmy Butler Among 5 Suspended For The Heat-Pelicans Fight

jimmy butler fight

Friday’s game between the Miami Heat and New Orleans Pelicans was feistier than expected, as a fracas between Jimmy Butler and Naji Marshall sparked a fight — with Jose Alvarado and Thomas Bryant getting into it to further escalate things — in what eventually became a Miami win.

Unsurprisingly, the NBA handed down a number of suspensions as additional punishment for Miami and New Orleans’ edition of Friday Night Fights, with Butler and Marshall each being given a one-game suspension for their actions, with Alvarado and Bryant being given three games each for escalating things by coming off of the bench and fighting. Nikola Jovic also got a game for leaving the bench area.

The suspensions all follow what the NBA has done over the last two decades to try and curb physical altercations on the court, as the players involved get a punishment but the bigger punishment always comes for anyone that escalates things further. That has been the case for years as the NBA never wants a fight to turn into an all-out brawl, and for the most part players learn that lesson quickly once they miss game checks for leaving the bench. Alvarado and Bryant not only left the bench but also escalated things by fighting themselves, which tacked on two extra games to their suspensions.
