People are mortified to find out how many moms daydream about being hospitalized

It’s hard to explain the relentless intensity of having young children if you haven’t done it. It’s wonderful, beautiful, magical and all of that—it truly is—but it’s a lot. Like, a lot. It’s a bit like running an ultramarathon through the most beautiful landscape you can imagine. There’s no question that it’s amazing, but it’s really, really hard. And sometimes there are storms or big hills or obstacles or twisted ankles or some other thing that makes it even more challenging for a while.

Unfortunately, a lot of moms feel like they’re running that marathon alone. Some actually are. Some have partners who don’t pull their weight. But even with an equal partner, the early years tend to be mom-heavy, and it takes a toll.

In fact, that toll is so great that it’s not unusual for moms to fantasize about being hospitalized—not with anything serious, just something that requires a short stay—simply to get a genuine break.

In a thread on X (formerly Twitter), a mom named Emily shared this truth: “[I don’t know] if the lack of community care in our culture is more evident than when moms casually say they daydream about being hospitalized for something only moderately serious so that they are forced to not have any responsibilities for like 3 days.”

In a follow-up tweet, she added, “And other moms are like ‘yeah totally’ while childfree Gen Z girls’ mouths hang open in horror.”

Other moms corroborated, not only with the fantasy but the reality of getting a hospital break:

“And can confirm: I have the fondest memories of my appendicitis that almost burst 3 weeks after my third was born bc I emergency had to go get it taken out and I mean I let my neighbor take my toddlers and I let my husband give the baby formula, and I slept until I was actually rested. Under the knife, but still. It was really nice,” wrote one mom.

“I got mastitis when my first was 4 months old. I had to have surgery, but my hospital room had a nice view, my mom came to see me, the baby was with me but other people mostly took care of her, bliss,” shared another.

Some people tried to blame lackadaisical husbands and fathers for moms feeling overwhelmed, but as Emily pointed out, it’s not always enough to have a supportive spouse. That’s why she pointed to “lack of community care” in her original post.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to raise a mother. Without the proverbial village, we end up bearing too much of the weight of childrearing ourselves. We’re not just running the ultramarathon—we’re also carrying the water, bandaging the blisters, moving fallen trees out of the way, washing the sweat out of our clothes—and we’re doing it all without any rest.

Why don’t moms just take a vacation instead of daydreaming about hospitalization? It’s not that simple. Many people don’t have the means for a getaway, but even if they do, there’s a certain level of “mom guilt” that comes with purposefully leaving your young children. Vacations usually require planning and decision-making as well, and decision fatigue is one of the most exhausting parts of parenting.

Strange as it may seem, the reason hospitalization is attractive is that it’s forced—if you’re in the hospital, you have to be there, so there’s no guilt about choosing to leave. It involves no decision-making—someone else is calling the all shots. You literally have no responsibilities in the hospital except resting—no one needs anything from you. And unlike when you’re on vacation, most people who are caring for your kids when you’re in the hospital aren’t going to constantly contact you to ask you questions. They’ll leave you to let you rest.

Paula Fitzgibbons shares that had three kids under the age of 3 in 11 months (two by adoption and one by birth). Her husband, despite being very involved and supportive, had a 1.5 hour commute for work, so the lion’s share of childcare—”delightful utter chaos” as she refers to it—fell on her shoulders. At one point, she ended up in the ER with atrial fibrillation, and due to family medical history was kept in the hospital for a few days for tests and monitoring.

“When people came to visit me or called to see how I was, I responded that I was enjoying my time at ‘the spa,’ and though I missed my family, I was soaking it all in,” she tells Upworthy. “My husband understood. Other mothers understood. The medical staff did not know what to make of my cheerful demeanor, but there I was, lying in bed reading and sleeping for four straight days with zero guilt. What a gift for a new mom.”

When you have young children, your concept of what’s relaxing shifts. I recall almost falling asleep during one of my first dental cleanings after having kids. That chair was so comfy and no one needed anything from me—I didn’t even care what they were doing to my teeth. It felt like heaven to lie down and rest without any demands being made of me other than “Open a little wider, please.”

Obviously, being hospitalized isn’t ideal for a whole host of reasons, but the desire is real. There aren’t a lot of simple solutions to the issue of moms needing a real break—not just an hour or two, but a few days—but maybe if society were structured in such a way that we had smaller, more frequent respites and spread the work of parenting across the community, we wouldn’t feel as much of a desire to be hospitalized simply to be able to be able to rejuvenate.

Fox News Actually Said (Out Loud) That Black Voters Will Turn To Trump ‘Because They Love Sneakers’

Donald Trump
Getty Image

On the heels of the financially devastating ruling against Donald Trump in his Manhattan civil fraud case, the former president wasted no time leaning into his next scheme: Selling $400 gold sneakers to his supporters.

While Trump was widely mocked for flagrantly fleecing his MAGA rubes, Fox News took a different approach. Predictably, the conservative network fawned all over Trump, but in a move no one saw coming, The Big Weekend Show co-host Raymond Arroyo took Trump’s sneaker game to a whole new sycophantic level by suggesting that it secured him the Black vote.

In a freakishly enthusiastic rant, Arroyo argued that Black people love sneakers, so therefore, they will throw their support behind Trump because he understands their “culture.” Arroyo’s wild screed is so unbelievable that we posted in its entirety because paraphrasing won’t do it justice, via Mediaite:

RAYMOND ARROYO: I was on social media last night. Very interesting as you see Black support eroding from Joe Biden. This is connecting with Black America because they love sneakers! They’re into sneakers. They love the- this is a big deal, certainly in the inner city. So when you have Trump roll out his sneaker line, they’re like, ‘Wait a minute, this is cool.’ He’s reaching them on a level that defies and is above politics. The culture always trumps politics, and Trump understands culture like no politician I’ve ever seen.

TOMI LAHREN: Question for you on that point though: Will the people that are excited about the sneakers and excited about Donald Trump, will that translate into them going out and voting for Donald Trump?

ARROYO: Look, anyone willing to put 400 bucks down for a pair of sneakers, yeah! I think that’s commitment and love. It’s something. It’s affection.

LAHREN: I hope you’re right.

You can watch the segment below, and again, Arroyo’s weirdly jubilant delivery has to be seen to be believed:

Needless to say, the reactions were flying on Twitter as people couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculous (and racist) centerpiece of Arroya’s argument that Trump just locked down the Black vote by selling $400 gold sneakers.

Prime Video Will Reportedly Pay An Outrageous Amount For A 2025 NFL Playoff Game

nfl wild card
Getty Image

The NFL will continue auctioning off early round playoff games to streaming partners despite the backlash towards this year’s Peacock exclusive game during Wild Card Weekend between the Dolphins and Chiefs, and it’s hard to blame the league given what networks are putting up.

After Peacock paid around $110 million to land the biggest streaming day in history thanks to Dolphins-Chiefs, Amazon’s Prime Video will join the fray in 2025. A report this week from Front Office Sports put the price tag at $120 million for Prime Video’s playoff game, but CNBC’s Alex Sherman reported on Wednesday that the NFL will actually be getting closer to $150 million from the streamer for the exclusive rights.

Roger Goodell has made clear that there is a line he’ll draw with regards to streaming services having games, as there won’t be a Super Bowl on a streamer coming in the future, but the NFL is willing to take a ratings hit for a massive payday on a Wild Card game. Dolphins-Chiefs did 23 million viewers, which is a record for streaming but was well below what a typical NFL playoff game does on linear TV (FOX did ~40 million this year, while ESPN did ~29 million on Monday night). You can also expect the NFL to keep Conference Championship (and likely Divisional Round) games on linear as well, as they regularly top 50 million, which just isn’t going to happen on streaming.

Still, at $150 million, they’ll take the hit on a 6-16 million viewer loss and while it might be frustrating for fans, it’s hard to blame the league for taking advantage of how thirsty streamers are to bring in eyeballs.

Bleachers Reflect On The Lonelier Times Without Love On Their New Song, ‘Me Before You’

Bleachers is just a few weeks away from dropping their new self-titled album, and have treated fans to another preview of the record with a new song, “Me Before You.” Building on a dreamy jazz instrumental, the track places a focus on lead singer Jack Antonoff’s vocals and lyricism. Compared to the previous album tracks like “Modern Girl,” this slows the pacing down and allows him to show how love has changed him.

Romance also seems to be playing a major theme through the album, as Antonoff wrote another early single, “Tiny Moves,” about actress/wife Margaret Qualley, who also starred in the video.

“My bed was a placе for the lonely / Built it that way, came to think it was holy / That was mе blue,” he sings on “Me Before You,” according to Genius. “That was me before you.”

Fans who are hoping to catch the band on the road this year are in luck, as they will be bringing their From The Studio To The Stage tour to the US and UK this year. A complete list of tour dates, along with more information, can be found here.

Kodak Black Was Released From Jail And Celebrated By Throwing Rocks At A Reporter

In early December, Kodak Black was arrested for suspected cocaine possession — his latest in a long line of run-ins with the law that led to an extended stay in a detention facility. Today, though, the Associated Press reports that Kodak — whose real name is Bill Kapri — was released from jail after a judge ruled in his favor when the substance found by police was confirmed to be oxycodone, for which Kodak had a prescription.

Police in Plantation, Florida arrested Kodak after finding him asleep in a vehicle with white power on his face. Prosecutors said it initially tested positive for cocaine, and the arrest was considered a violation of Kodak’s existing probation agreement from a prior conviction for illegal weapons possession. Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy dismissed the cocaine possession charge about two weeks ago, and on Tuesday, sentenced Kodak to time served for the probation violation, making him eligible for release. Kodak still awaits trial for a separate drug case from 2022 in which he’s accused of trafficking more oxycodone pills. His lawyers maintain the drugs were prescribed for personal use.

According to Billboard, Kodak’s first actions upon leaving Broward County jail included throwing rocks at a photographer. A Local 10 News team on site reported that Kodak accosted them, threatening to punch a reporter and throwing rocks at the photographer, hitting him in the ribs. They later filed a police report.

Move Over, ‘Yellowstone,’ The REAL Ranch Cowboys Have Their Own Peacock Reality Series Now

Thanks to Yellowstone and its never-ending list of spinoff shows, the recent return of Raylan Givens, and the number of cowboy hats Jesse Plemmons has been wearing lately, it’s not too far-fetched to say that America is having a true cowboy moment. Now that Beyonce has officially changed the national anthem to “TEXAS HOLD EM” it’s time for us to face the facts: we are in a fast-growing Yeehaw movement, so saddle up. And this time, we are consulting the real ranchers of America.

Peacock’s answer to the current cowboy climate is a new docuseries focused on real cowboys. The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys follows the real-life McBee family in rural Missouri who live and work on the family ranch. Eventually, one of the sons will have to take over the ranch, but that doesn’t come without some family drama. Here is the official synopsis:

The docuseries reveals the high-stakes world of farming and ranching in rural Missouri and what it takes to be a real American cowboy. Viewers will also get a behind-the-scenes look into a family dynasty and the sibling rivalry that ensues when a family tries to expand their business. With tensions mounting between Steve and his sons — Steven Jr., Jesse and Cole — after an explosive affair, viewers can expect a rollercoaster ride of ambition and betrayal.

All 10 episodes will land on Peacock on Monday, March 11. If you prefer a more old-school route, the series will air on USA Network weekly beginning March 11th. Retro! Check out the trailer above and get ready to buy some cowboy boots with the spurs.

‘The Crow’ Remake Star Bill Skarsgård’s Big Week Continues With Ripped Abs And (More) Vengeance In The ‘Boy Kills World’ Trailer

Bill Skarsgård is having quite a week and potentially a year as well. The Pennywise actor will be starring in the long-awaited (or perhaps long-threatened) The Crow remake, which had its release date bumped up to June 2024 by Lionsgate (which shuffled John Wick spinoff Ballerina to June 2025).

As such, the timing couldn’t be more right for this Skarsgård’s face to also surface in a trailer for another project, Boy Kills World. In this revenge story, Bill portrays “Boy,” who is portrayed in his younger years by Cameron Crovetti (Ryan on The Boys). The film is produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Moritz Mohr, and why yes, it sure looks like Bill’s abs are rivaling those of brother Alexander in his Tarzan era.

The film is produced by Sam Raimi, and here’s the synopsis:

Skarsgård stars as “Boy” who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.

Boy Kills World also stars Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Isaiah Mustafa, Famke Janssen, and Brett Gelman. The film premieres on April 26.
