Diamond Dallas Page Discusses His Career And The Impact Of Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts

Diamond Dallas Page has never been just another one of the guys. His unique career trajectory has taken him on a start/stop path to superstardom, one that he refused to let pass him by despite critics and doctors telling him it would never happen.

As the subject of A&E’s latest “Biography: WWE Legends” series, DDP says this type of recognition is something he’s wanted for a long time.

“This is a really special thing because not everybody gets to tell their story,” Page tells Uproxx Sports ahead of his episode’s premier this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on A&E. “They went all the way back to my childhood, which is pretty cool. The stuff that no one will have ever seen before.”

Throughout the biography, Page’s perseverance and relentless positivity is on display. His journey in the on and off path to pro wrestling’s main event is thoroughly detailed from an early age, infatuated with these larger-than-life stars.

His first foray into wrestling ended after three matches and a knee injury, when a doctor advised against the wear and tear on his 23-year-old body. With Page’s dream of wrestling done, he moved over to the night club life and eventually found himself in Fort Myers, Florida. An introduction to the Jake “The Snake” Roberts character on television, however, would alter his life forever.

“The booze, the broads, and the party took me in a whole different direction. I didn’t really stay on track. I forgot about my dream. Eventually saw WrestleMania, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I should have been a part of this.’ I was so mad at myself, I literally stopped watching wrestling because I left the dream,” Page says. “Then one night, I was flicking the channels and I see this guy walk through the curtain with a snake in a bag over his shoulder, and I’m like this guy puts swag in swag before there was ever such a word. And then his promo, that just took it to a whole different level and boom, it sucked me right back into the television as a fan.”

Six months later, Page says Roberts came into his night club in Florida, they partied, and the rest was history. Roberts shared Page’s name among other traveling wrestlers, and the nights of partying with wrestlers triggered DDP to start imagining a life for himself in the ring.

The episode details how Page got his start as a manager, making his way to WCW, what led to him transitioning into a performer, training at WCW’s Power Plant, and how Roberts’ debut in WCW helped guide him into the blossoming career he’d later embark on.

“Me and Kevin Nash are tag teaming, we’re at the bottom of the card,” Page says. “Me and Kev start driving him and he’s in the back having a few beers. We got to hang with Yoda. Then, when I tore my rotator cuff and they let me go, Jake came and lived with me for three months until he lost a 12-foot cobra at my house.”

When Page eventually worked his way back to WCW, he’d find support in the form of Roberts and the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, who he called a mentor. He also credits the relationships he’d built with the likes of Scott Hall and Nash in how he’d climb the ranks and eventually reach the top of the mountain.

“I would say without Dusty Rhodes, there is no Diamond Dallas Page. Without Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, there’s no three-time world champion or Hall of Famer because both of those guys helped me so much,” Page adds. “I always tell people, they think it’s all about who you know or who knows you, when the reality is, it’s all about who’s willing to say they know you. Who’s willing to put their name on the line for you? And that’s what Scott and Kev did by (pitching my turn on the NWO).”

More than winning championships, putting the work in, and putting over his colleagues, DDP is proud of what he’s built with the DDP Yoga business post his wrestling days. The biography details how yoga saved his career when he blew his back out, and it’s fostered a change among former wrestlers that’s legitimately saved their lives.

“I was the guy who gave a fuck,” DDP says.

He’s helped others get jobs and gave back to the business, but he calls DDP Yoga “a different animal.”

“When you’ve abused your body like we do, people don’t realize. It felt like every single day, I was hitting the mat numerous times and one match with me could have been like you having four or five car accidents. You can’t fake gravity. You can’t fake the impact,” DDP continues.

“There will be broken necks, broken backs. That’s where DDP Yoga comes in. The body just gets so beat up. Later, you really feel that and that’s where it’s a big difference to show them a program that can help them get a really good cardiovascular workout, dramatically increase your flexibility, strengthen your core, all with minimal to no impact on your joints. What we do is real and we offer hope to a lot of people who think there is none.”

When And Where Will ‘The Boy And The Heron’ Be Streaming?

the boy and the heron

Ten years ago, legendary director Hayao Miyazaki announced he would be retiring from working on feature films. At the time, he said, “I know I’ve said I would retire many times in the past. Many of you must think, ‘Once again.’ But this time I am quite serious.” He was not serious.

He quickly reversed his decision to retire after developing The Boy And The Heron which hit theaters in December. To be clear, this is the fourth time Miyazaki has entered “retirement.”

After winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, The Boy and the Heron will head to Max later this year, thanks to a deal between the streamer and Studio Ghibli. The studio’s other films are currently streaming on the site.

“Our subscribers are always looking for unique stories, and we are happy to continue to offer these award-winning, critically acclaimed films and to add ‘The Boy and the Heron’ to our deep and rich Max content offering,” Elizabeth Bannan Atcheson, VP, Content Acquisitions, Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement. The streaming date has not yet been announced.

The English dub of The Boy and the Heron features an all-star voice cast including Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe, and Christian Bale. Hopefully, the success of this film will inspire Miyazaki to un-retire for the rest of his life.

Is Beyoncé’s New Country Album Titled ‘Cowboy Carter?’

Beyonce Grammys 2024

Anticipation for Beyoncé‘s upcoming album is at all-time highs and now, it looks like we might know what it’ll be called. While it was introduced to the world as “Act II” of a purported three-act project that includes the dance-themed Renaissance (or “Act I”) and the country-themed new album, fans checking out Beyoncé’s online shop today may have gotten a glimpse at its proper title: Cowboy Carter. Photos of the merch available for pre-order include T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan alongside Beyoncé with country western-style big hair and cowboy attire, as well as vinyl records bearing the words “Act II” and “Country Carter” on their covers. You can check them out here.

The first inkling that Beyoncé’s next album might be country actually came with the release of Renaissance. Ahead of its release, it was rumored that the album would incorporate both dance music and country. When it was actually released and featured a heavy focus on the former — and absolutely none of the latter — it confirmed that the country music was probably being reserved for future parts of the overall project. Then, during this year’s Super Bowl, Beyoncé teased the upcoming “Act II” with a promo that ran on Instagram at the same time as her Verizon commerical premiered on TV. She capped off the ultra-coordinated announcement with the release of two singles, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.”

While Beyoncé’s impending pivot to country was met with enthusiasm by the BeyHive, not everyone approved. The switch has seen its fair share of critics including those in country radio, who resented the intrusion from a perceived “outsider” — this despite Beyoncé’s well-known Texas upbringing and as-yet genreless output to date. That didn’t stop “Texas Hold ‘Em” from charting in its intended genre, nor from peaking at No. 1 on country charts.

The controversy has inspired plenty of discourse on the subject of genre; you can check out Uproxx’s feature on genre here and our feature on Black women in country music here.

Shocked girl asks older people how they looked ‘trivial’ things up before Google

Google and smart phones have been around so long that Gen Z doesn’t know a time before those things existed. They may have Googled what a card catalog was used for but plenty of them don’t know the pressure we all felt having to learn the dewy decimal system while walking around the library with a card with numbers scribbled on it.

They’ve never experienced the frustration of having an out of date Encyclopedia collection from the thrift store that was missing books “D” and “X-Z” when you had a research assignment due. Oh, sweet tech savvy – we not me generation, doesn’t understand that riding shot gun on a road trip meant you were suddenly a pirate with an Atlas map bigger than the dashboard.

Even as someone that was alive when having a rotary phone was the norm, I sometimes forget what life was like before all of the technological luxuries. It’s not surprising that Gen Z is confused on how we survived back then without knowledge at our fingertips, so when one of them asked, Gen X, Xennials and elder Millennials entered the chat.

Sarah Adelman posted a video to TikTok with the caption, “pls help I was born in 1997.” In the video she says she has a genuine question for older people and that’s when she asks, “what did you do before you could look something up?”

Adelman gives the example of something that isn’t in the dictionary or Encyclopedia. She wants to know what someone would do if there was a celebrity whose name you couldn’t remember or other trivial things like that.

“Would you go to the library? Like gen..and like okay, without Google Maps, like I know that there was MapQuest but before that like genuinely what would you do? Would you just accept not knowing,” the Gen Zer asks before saying she doesn’t think she would be able to survive without knowing.

Unfortunately for Adelman, the older generations informed her that this is exactly what we did back in the 1900s. We simply wondered about things that popped into our heads. In fact, since we knew there was no way of knowing the name of the actor that played on “Matlock” for one episode, we didn’t bother attempting to look it up. You’d either see them again in a rerun or it would come to you randomly while trying to locate a payphone.

“The name of an actor would come up to you 3 weeks later while you were eating a bowl of cereal,” one person writes.

“You would just be forever annoyed by it, keep it bookmarked in the back of your mind, then realize one day that dude’s name is Ray Liotta or something,” another commenter says.

“Ummm. I love how you reference Mapquest. We used maps. Just maps. Good ole paper maps,” someone writes.

“We just lived in blissful ignorance and then in the middle of a conversation about pretzels a week later we would just yell out the answer,” one person reveals.

To no one’s surprise Adelman did not like these answers. She replied to someone explaining that we simply wondered with, “I could never.” The official Google account even chimed in saying, “however it worked, sounds bad.”

Ehh, it wasn’t so bad. We didn’t know any different, but in a way Adelman had that good old fashioned pre-Google experience when she posed this question. You can watch the perplexed girl’s video below:

Gen X couple share a delightfully cheesy rap song welcoming millennials into their 40s

It is pretty wild to consider that Millennials are now entering their 40s and no longer hold the mantle of the young and up-and-coming generation. According to Pew Research, Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996, so these days they range between the ages of 29 and 42.

These are the years when people begin to settle down, start families and experience the first uncomfortable signs of aging.

The Holderness Family is headed by a Gen X couple, Kim and Penn Holderness, who are best known for their viral comedy songs. Their latest video is about welcoming Millennials to their next phase in life, one that’s less about spending all night in the club and more about embracing a quieter, more practical life.

In this case, “the club” isn’t a loud place to get a Long Island iced tea but a state of mind where you’re more likely to appreciate a good walk for your mental health.

Holderness Family Music has over 797,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 230 million views since they started their page in 2011. They “create original music, song parodies, and skits to poke fun of ourselves, the world we live in, and (hopefully) make you laugh.”

The “Welcome to the Club, Millennials” video is a bit of a departure from the usual intergenerational bickering we’re accustomed to seeing on social media. Instead, Gen Xers open their doors to the Millennials entering the next phase in their lives. “Well, Gen X is here to say ‘don’t be bummed, come on in, welcome to the club,’” Penn raps.

According to the song, if you’re a Millennial and have done any of the following, you’re officially in “the club,” whether you know it or not:

Hung a calendar on your fridge

Have strong opinions on who’s the best “Jeopardy!” host

Play Wordle

Wore reader glasses

Drink seltzers

Had Gen Z call your clothes “vintage”

Gone Christmas shopping in October

Had a three-day hangover

Gone to a movie theater because it serves food

Took a mental health walks

Bought a chair for your back

Grooved to supermarket music

Own plastic houseplants

Taken supplements

Saved money for a Disney vacation

Have zero f**cks to give

Still love Blink-182

Millennials who are a little leery of aging should be happy to learn that they may be in the happiest times of their lives. According to developmental psychologists, the period of life between ages 30 to 45 is known as “established adulthood” and is a time of life when people are happiest.

Even though people in this age group are stuck in the “career and care crunch,” where they are likely to juggle a job while caring for children or older relatives, this developmental stage is also very fulfilling.

“Yes, people were feeling overwhelmed and talked about having too much to do in too little time,” Clare Mehta, Professor of Psychology at Emmanuel College, wrote in The Conversation. “But they also talked about feeling profoundly satisfied. All of these things that were bringing them stress were also bringing them joy.”

Cardi B Surprised The Crowd At Madonna’s Show By Joining As A Celebrity Judge For The ‘Vogue’ Dance-Off

As Madonna has been making stops across North America as part of The Celebration Tour, she has also brought a ton of surprise guests to join the party. During one segment of the show, Madonna brings out a celebrity judge to help her rank a dance-off that takes place during “Vogue.” And for her Monday (March 11) concert in Los Angeles, it was none other than Cardi B who came to help out.

Cardi and Madonna matched their blonde hair and black bodysuits as they held up the “10” or “Chop” cards. The two sat on chairs and just let the dancers show off their skills.

Although they had previously collaborated on Quavo’s “Champagne Rose” back in 2018, which appeared on the rapper’s debut album, Madonna and Cardi B had a brief dispute on social media back in 2022. “I literally [paid] this woman homage so many times cause I grew up listening to her,” Cardi wrote at the time, according to Variety. “She can make her point without putting clown emojis and getting slick out the mouth.”

Yet, they immediately patched things up with a phone call. “I talked to Madonna… It was beautiful… Have a great day and drive safely yallll,” Cardi added.

“I love you @iamcardib!!” Madonna tweeted back. “Always have and always will.”

Check out some clips of Cardi and Madonna sharing the stage and judging panel below.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Will Apparently Take Plenty Of Swings At Kevin Feige

Deadpool 3 Trailer
Marvel

Thanks to its record-breaking Super Bowl trailer that sent Marvel fans poring over every frame for Easter eggs, it’s clear that Deadpool & Wolverine is going to dramatically alter the MCU. After a rough 2023, the cinematic universe needs a strong shot in the arm, which is why Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth is already referring to himself as the “Marvel Jesus.”

According to a new interview with Karan Soni, who returns as taxi driver Dopinder in the third film, Deadpool & Wolverine will take the jokes even further by aiming them directly at Kevin Feige. The Marvel mastermind was on set where he got repeatedly roasted by Reynolds, both on and off screen.

Via Collider:

It was very secretive. And so we were just in this, I got the scene like the day before or whatever, and we walked into the sound stage, and [Kevin] just appeared next to Hugh Jackman, and I was just like, I don’t know what’s happening. It was very crazy, but he was very sweet, very kind. He came up and said hi to all of us from the original movies and stuff, and he seemed excited himself by what was happening. And then Ryan is definitely like, you know, calling him out a lot at the moment. There’s a lot of Kevin jokes [in the movie]. You have to have a good sense of humor and he does. So that’s cool.

Of course, Deadpool & Wolverine won’t be the first time that Feige let a fourth-wall breaking character take a crack at his all-consuming control of the MCU. The She-Hulk finale saw Tatiana Maslany’s title character fling barbs at an AI robot named K.E.V.I.N. that sported Feige’s signature ballcap look. Maslany’s She-Hulk dunked on everything from bad CGI, shoehorned cameos, and convoluted third acts before being allowed to write her own ending, which conveniently involved more hooking up with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil.

However, She-Hulk‘s approach was aimed for a Disney+ audience. Deadpool & Wolverine has the freedom of an R-rating, so God only knows what Reynolds has in store for Feige.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters on July 26.

The Ravens Are Signing Derrick Henry To A 2-Year Deal

derrick henry
Getty Image

Derrick Henry has been one of the most consistently dominant running backs in the NFL for the past six years in Tennessee. The Titans built their offense around Henry and the running game, with the pass being a counter to the run rather than the other way around.

However, Tennessee decided this offseason to change their direction, firing Mike Vrabel and letting Henry hit free agency. This year’s class of free agent backs has done well, with Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs both getting big deals in Philadelphia and Green Bay respectively, while others like D’Andre Swift and Tony Pollard (who the Titans signed as Henry’s replacement) have gotten solid contracts as well.

The Baltimore Ravens have long been seen as a team interested in Henry, as their run-heavy style and desire to get downhill and play between the tackles with their running backs made them a fairly obvious fit for the former All-Pro. The question was whether they could figure out the financials, and on Tuesday they did just that agreeing to a two-year deal that guarantees Henry $9 million.

Henry, unsurprisingly, is excited to join one of the AFC’s top contenders.

Henry will replace Gus Edwards, who left one Harbaugh for another by signing with the Chargers on Monday. While Henry had a bit of a down year in 2023, he was also playing with a suboptimal passing attack for much of that and still managed 1,162 yards and 12 touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry. For a Ravens team that wants to wear on teams physically and needs to find a way to be better closing things out in the fourth quarter, Henry certainly should help their cause. Having to worry about his power coming downhill and Lamar Jackson’s speed breaking to the outside will create a lot of stress for opposing defenses. Henry and Keaton Mitchell should form a very good thunder and lightning tandem once the latter returns from injury, and Baltimore’s rushing attack may find a way to get even better in 2024.
