Michael Keaton Was Adamant That The ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel Go Easy On CGI And Green Screens: ‘It Had To Feel Handmade’

Beetlejuice Michael Keaton
Warner Bros

With the actor’s strike now over and Hollywood back in full swing, Michael Keaton finally had a chance to open up about returning to one of his most iconic roles for director Tim Burton. And this time we’re not talking about Batman.

Later this year, Keaton will reprise his role as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a new sequel to the 1988 classic. The actor has been reluctant to come back as the demented demon, but he and Burton finally realized the challenge was worth it.

“We thought, ‘You got to get this right. Otherwise, just don’t do it. Let’s just go on with our lives and do other things.’ So I was hesitant and cautious, and he was probably equally as hesitant and cautious over all these years,” Keaton told PEOPLE. “Once we got there, I said, ‘Okay, let’s just go for it. Let’s just see if we can do it, if we can pull this off.’”

One thing both director and star agreed on, the sequel had to go light on the CGI and green screens. “It had to feel handmade,” Keaton said.

“It’s the most exciting thing,” says Keaton. “When you get to do that again after years of standing in front of a giant screen, pretending somebody’s across the way from you, this is just enormous fun.”

After starring in Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Flash, Keaton got a taste of modern CGI filmmaking, and he definitely prefers the old-school methods.

“It’s the most fun I’ve had on set in a long time,” Keaton said about the Beetlejuice sequel. “On one hand, you’d go, ‘Well, of course it’s the most fun. It looks like fun.’ As you know, it doesn’t always work like that.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrives in theaters on September 6, 2024.

‘Cobra Kai’ Fans, Don’t Worry: The Star Who Was Missing From A Recent Cast Photo Has Been Located

Cobra Kai
Netflix

The Cobra Kai cast is currently filming the sixth and final season of the runaway Netflix series. The streaming service chose to reveal that Martin Kove’s Kreese will return because you don’t let a character bust out of prison in this heightened universe and not follow up on that. Additionally, Billy Zabka (Johnny) will be in fighting form again, and most of the rest of the ensemble cast has been confirmed to appear for this last karate hurrah (as far as this series goes).

A few weeks ago, Netflix also revealed this behind-the-scenes image of cameras beginning to roll, and it looked like most of the gang was present.

Or not?

Devotees of Jacob Bertrand’s Hawk, however, were quick to realize that he wasn’t pictured. This, of course, caused some alarm and might have caused people to fear the worst (Hawk being kidnapped and having his head shaved again, perhaps).

Well, never fear. Xolo Maridueña (Miguel) stepped up to answer that question and provide proof that not only does Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz make his presence known, but he grew back that mohawk in blue.

It’s a good color for him. Now, why didn’t Bertrand appear in the full cast photo? Perhaps Bertrand was — as with the table read — running a wee bit late. It’s all good, though, as long as we see the rest of Cobra Kai this year.

Josh Brolin’s Convincing List Of Reasons For Why You Should See ‘Dune 2’ Includes Florence Pugh Being A ‘Hottie’

Dune Josh Brolin
Warner Bros.

If you’re still on the fence about seeing Dune: Part Two, first off, what’s the matter with you? Think you’re too good for Stellan Skarsgård taking a black goo bath, huh? Maybe Josh Brolin can convince you.

Over the weekend, the actor/poet who plays Gurney Halleck in the sequel to 2021’s Dune, made a convincing pitch to see the Denis Villeneuve film in theaters. “DUNE 2 release is less than TWO WEEKS!!!” he wrote. “Robot Lady and Wonka fall in love. Then Elvis tries to fuck it all up while his bad dad floats in a pool of pond scum. The WWE dude from Gardians gets super pissed while Midsomer hottie puts the eyes on Wonka Obi Wan just after his Mom gets caught taking LSD in a sandy bathroom. Chigurh still doesnt like the guy from The Goonies. I mean who doesn’t want to see all that on IMAX???”

Florence Pugh — “Midsomer hottie” — must be flattered.

Brolin also brought up the notorious popcorn bucket, which definitely looks like a popcorn bucket and isn’t reminding people of anything else.

The pandemic is over. Strikes have come and gone. Fuck it. It’s time to commune again and experience that amazing feeling of when the lights go down, you have your hand deep in your Popcorn worm, and DUNE 2 consumes you.

Brolin should be an inspirational speaker. Or at least write IMDb plot recaps.

Dune: Part Two comes out on March 1.

The Latest ‘Wom/n Worldwide’ Pays Tribute To Women In The Arts For Black History Month

Black History Month is here and, for the latest episode of Wom/n Worldwide, we’re celebrating the record-setting achievements of Black women in music and entertainment that you should know about.

Over the last few years, the pages of the her-story books have been filled with several notable entries from Black women across the arts. From music to TV and, of course, movies, host Drew Dorsey pays tribute to these awe-inspiring trailblazers kicking down doors throughout the industry.

In this episode, we honor icons like Jennifer Hudson and Viola Davis for their recent entry into the exclusive EGOT club, but these phenomenal women aren’t the only onscreen powerhouses that take centerstage. Dorsey also shines the spotlight on TV stars Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, and Niecy Nash-Betts.

And the flower-giving didn’t stop there. We couldn’t miss out on marking the streaming and charting history set by SZA’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, SOS, or the impressive feat Nicki Minaj’s long-awaited Pink Friday 2 album accomplished for women in rap music. What about the sheer dominance Beyoncé has shown at the Grammy Awards? Yes, Dorsey dives into that, too, along with a few sweet caveats about Queen Bey’s culture-shifting album, Renaissance.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

dua lipa ariana grande niall horan best new pop
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

This week saw the release of a ton of great new pop music. Ariana Grande got another iconic pop performer to jump on the “Yes, And?” remix. Dua Lipa is dodging toxic dudes left and right. Jennifer Lopez put out new love odes to Mr. Ben “Dunkings” Affleck. And so much more.

Check out the rest of Uproxx’s Best New Pop Music roundup below.

Dua Lipa — “Training Season”

Dua Lipa’s “Training Season” is making men work for her love in the new single and music video, which will be included on her forthcoming album. As Lipa described, she was “fed up” with bad dates, which led to a hilarious studio session where she vented about all the chaos.

Karol G, Tiësto — “Contigo”

Karol G reunited with Tiësto for “Contigo,” a Spanish EDM-inspired track about celebrating love in all its glory and forms. In the music video, she also honored LGBTQ+ representation by having Young Miko play her love interest.

Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey — “Yes, And” Remix

As Ariana Grande is getting closer to releasing her Eternal Sunshine album, what better way to keep fans excited than by teaming up with THE Mariah Carey? The two united for their first collaboration on the remix of Grande’s “Yes, And?” — with Carey doing a verse about shutting down a male suitor.

Jennifer Lopez — “This Is Me… Now”

Jennifer Lopez is ready to reveal all of her life details from the past few years, as she put it all into her new album (and connecting film), This Is Me… Now. Another title track on this week’s list, Lopez reflects on how all the wrong turns in love and life’s mistakes led her exactly to where she is right now.

Caroline Polachek — “Gambler’s Prayer”

As one of the new tracks from Polachek’s Desire I Want To Turn Into You (Everlasking Edition), “Gambler’s Prayer” is a quieter song that is still full of her unique electronic production choices, whether it’s a shimmering sound or some background claps — it pulls the listener into her dreamy world once again.

Niall Horan — “You Could Start A Cult” (Spotify Studio Version)

Niall Horan recently released some live performances as part of the Spotify Studios series. Among them is a take of “You Could Start A Cult,” which, despite the title, opens with just an acoustic guitar and uses the production to beautifully spotlight Horan’s vocals.

Holly Humberstone — “Dive”

Holly Humberstone shows off her talent once again by creatively managing to sample The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills in her single, “Dive,” which will have fans even more obsessed — especially if you love both aspects of the crossover.

Lizzy McAlpine — “Older”

Lizzy McAlpine’s “Older” is the title track from her next album, where she finds herself struggling and stuck in a loop of overthinking, all while recognizing that her mom is getting old. “We recorded most of it live, tracking the entire band at the same time in one room, me included,” she explained. “The passion in that space translates into the recorded music so much more than anything I’ve done before, and it has created a record that, in my opinion, is the best I’ve ever made.”

Maya Hawke — “Missing Out”

Maya Hawke’s “Missing Out” is an insanely catchy pop song, setting the tone as the lead single from her upcoming album, Chaos Angel. Her brother, Levon, also contributes background vocals on it.

Sasha Alex Sloan — “Highlights”

“Highlights” is Sasha Alex Sloan’s interpretation when it comes to the ups and downs of love, relying on a stripped-down instrumental to really allow the songwriting to shine. “This is a song I’ve been trying to write for a long time. Writing it was a cathartic experience and it makes me emotional every time I listen to it,” she shared.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘True Detective’ Star Kali Reis Slammed Creator Nic Pizzolatto For Opting To ‘Sh*t On’ The Season 4 Finale

True Detective Season 3
HBO

The finale of True Detective: Night Country dropped over the weekend, and while some have been calling it the “best finale ever” for the anthology series, others are not so impressed—mainly Nic Pizzolatto, the series creator.

The creator was initially on board to pen the fourth season before Issa Lopez stepped in as showrunner. While Pizzolatto is listed as the EP for season four, he’s not a fan and hasn’t been hiding it.

Pizzolatto took to Instagram to repost some harsh criticism of the fourth season, which stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The screenshots, which Pizzolatto reposted but didn’t write, called True Detective’s fourth season “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.”

Obviously, this didn’t sit well with fans and the cast of season four. Reis, who stars as Evangeline, slammed Pizzolatto’s response on Twitter/X, saying “That’s a damn shame…but hey I guess ‘if you don’t have anything good to share, sh*t on others’ is the new wave.”

Last month, Lopez responded to Pizzolatto’s ongoing criticism. “I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative,” Lopez told Vulture. “I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”

Meanwhile, Pizzolatto is allegedly writing a Blade script for Marvel, but who knows what those guys are up to now.

Questlove Slams The ‘I Love Real Music’ Folks Upset Over Sexyy Red’s Upcoming Appearance At The 2024 Roots Picnic

questlove root gala 2022
Getty Image

With music festival season approaching, organizers have realized you can’t please the public. Following the reveal of the 2024 Roots Picnic, Questlove quickly learned this lesson. Over the years, as the event has expanded to be more inclusive of fans’ tastes, the outdoor event not only added a second day but mixed up its featured act.

After welcoming each billed musician via an individual shout-out on his Instagram page, followers blasted Questlove for booking Sexyy Red to the fest that has its roots in R&B, neo-soul, and vintage hip-hop.

Yesterday (February 19), Questlove had enough of the negative remarks and responded to silence the critics replying to a comment left under his initial post.

“There is always that one [act] on the show everyone hates because it serves as a reminder the hip hop they like is from 30 years ago,” he wrote. “I mean, I get it, but look: we gotta round and balance the day out. There are other stages, podcasts, and events to see.”

Questlove didn’t stop there. He went on to slam users for pouring their hate into Sexyy Red’s announcement instead of appreciating the other acts set to perform.

“I’m still shocked yall got energy for ‘oh hell no isms,’” he wrote. “Like it’s 16 years folks, when have you seen a festival in which every act is the act you love? I mean, the way I see it: cats in here bringing a certain energy: meanwhile, there is a whole entire Jill [Scott] post, Amerie post, Black Thought post, and a Meth[od Man] and Red[man] post. I see/hear nary a ‘I love real music’ person supporting that page. It’s almost worth it just for this engagement & trolling was the last thing on my mind lol. Roots Picnic is well-rounded, and that’s why it works.”

This isn’t the first time the Roots Picnic’s lineup has caused a stir online. In 2023, organizers were questioned after GloRilla and Saucy Santana were announced to perform. Festival regulars, City Girls, have been met with negative backlash for years. However, given Roots Picnic’s rise in popularity over the years, it is safe to say organizers are doing something right.

The general on-sale for the 2024 Roots Picnic begins on February 23 at 10 a.m. ET. Find more information here.
