RHCP’s Flea Backs A New Collection Of The Pretenders Covers From His Silverlake Conservatory Of Music Students

Red Hot Chili PeppersFlea co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory Of Music, a nonprofit educational organization, a couple decades back. The endeavor continues today, and now some students have shared a collection of The Pretenders covers. Recognition Music Group and Hipgnosis Songs have agreed to waive Chrissie Hynde’s royalties for Our Loving Tribute To The Pretenders, which will instead by donated to the the Silverlake Conservatory Of Music.

Flea says in a statement:

“Music education! From the lesson room, to the practice at home, to the band rehearsal, to letting it all out in the recording studio. And now, to your earholes! The kids at the Silverlake Conservatory Of Music have recorded something incredible, and the first three songs, an homage to The Pretenders, are out today. Please support the kids, support music education, listen to it and cheer them on. Thank youuuuuuuu!”

Merck Mercuriadis, executive producer and founder of Hipgnosis Songs, adds, “Flea’s passion, commitment to music education, the Silverlake Conservatory Of Music and the kids it serves is contagious for good reason. Seeing these amazing young people benefit from learning an instrument and start making records in tribute to their favorite artists and songwriters is truly special. All proceeds will benefit SCM so please listen to these amazing performances of songs you know and love and support these amazing kids!”

This is just the first of three planned releases, as a collection of Neil Young covers is set to follow in July, then a RHCP set in September.

Yeat Puts His Own Electronic Spin On Drake’s ‘Feel No Ways,’ Sparking A Debate Among Fans

Some Sexy Songs 4 U, Drake’s collaborative album with PartyNextDoor, continues to pick up streams online. But it is Drake’s older discography that is on the minds of fans online. Well, at least Yeat is paying close attention to it.

Last month during his Coachella 2025 appearance, Yeat performed a cover of Drake’s “Feel No Ways.” After Yeat’s version sparked a split response from users online, supporters believed the tune would never again see the light of day. Whelp, today (May 2), Yeat decided to troll the trolls online by uploading it onto digital music platforms.

While “Feël No Wayz (Yeat mix)” features the same moody original lyrics and most its somber tonality of “Feel No Way” Yeat took a gamble with on the song’s production. Instead of the blend of melodic rap and R&B Drake has been synonymous with, Yeat opted for a fuzzy electronic approach.

In the comment section for its supporting visualizer on YouTube, users are still divided. However, many former detractors have begun to walk back their disdain disdain after taking a moment to process the sonic re-imagination.

“They changed the mix, this is a lot better than the preview everyone was hatin on,” wrote one user.

“Growing on me hella. Loved how he really brought out his own style and vibe to the song while keeping the same energy from the Drake version. Sh*t gets better with every listen,” penned another.

Listen to “Feël No Wayz (Yeat mix)” above.

Is Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Special Ops: Lioness’ On Netflix?

lioness-special-ops-saldana-lg
Paramount Plus

Taylor Sheridan’s path toward the neo-Western future remains solid with Yellowstone being laid to rest and yielding to the upcoming The Madison and 1944, but do not sleep on his standalone series. Those recent juggernauts include Landman, which is currently filming a second season, and Special Ops: Lioness, which hasn’t officially been renewed for a third season that does seem inevitable, given that Zoe Saldaña initially signed on for three, and numbers have been good on Paramount Plus.

The series is like no other in Sheridan’s portfolio, and word on the Internet street is that the show has joined the other spy thrillers on Netflix. However, some confusion abounds, so here’s our chance for clarity on the subject.

Is Taylor Sheridan’s Special Ops: Lioness On Netflix?

Yes and no. Clear as mud?

The series did land on Netflix a few weeks ago in very limited territories that do not include the United States. The views that have been racked up have still pushed Lioness: Special Ops onto the current Top 10 English Language series list with a total of 15.4 million hours streamed in two weeks. This restrained success (at least in comparison to numbers at the Paramount Plus home base) could prompt Netflix to spread that love around.

If and when that happens stateside, then there will be the question of whether Sheridan’s obligatory shirtless performance will be among those episodes. Intrigue, man.

Special Ops: Lioness stars Saldana as a military and CIA operative named Joe, who molds recruits to infiltrate terrorist cells. Co-stars include Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and Laysla De Oliveira with Genesis Rodriguez making a splash during the second season. Fingers are crossed for that third season renewal announcement soon.

Bruce Springsteen Seemingly Doesn’t Love Being Called ‘The Boss’: ‘I’ve Given Up And Gotten Used To It’

bruce springsteen

Bruce Springsteen has one of the most iconic, widely recognized nicknames in contemporary music history: The Boss. That doesn’t mean he loves it. In fact, it looks like he kind of dislikes it.

On an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast (as People notes), Springsteen said, “‘The Boss,’ which dogged me my whole life, still does. I’ve gotten used to it. I’ve given up and gotten used to it, I suppose.”

Springsteen also explained that the nickname started from his band and crew: “‘Hey, boss.’ You know? ‘Are we getting paid this week?’ ‘Sure.’ And then some DJ heard it and started using it on the radio and it, you know, went viral, as they say. And so there it is.”

In Peter Ames Carlin’s 2012 biography Bruce, E Street Band member Stevie Van Zandt said, “I remember people calling him that and not taking it seriously. Not ’til I started calling him the Boss. Then they took it seriously because I was a boss, too. So when I started calling him the Boss the vibe was, ‘If Stevie’s doing it, there’s something to this!’”

Meanwhile, Springsteen is set to be portrayed in an upcoming biopic by Jeremy Allen White, and he’s impressed by the actor’s vocal abilities.

Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ Tour Is Proof She’s Ready To Be A Movie Star

Charli XCX(1024x450)
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

“Iconic.”

That’s how Charli XCX once (accurately) described herself, and it also applies to the Brat tour.

After releasing Brat — which, among other accomplishments, won three Grammys and topped the Uproxx Music Critics Poll — the “360” singer first hit the road with Troye Sivan, and is now winding down the green-album era solo.

I caught the first concert of Charli’s mini-residency at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center this week. All four shows at the spacious 19,000-capacity arena are sold out, an impressive achievement for someone who, the last time I saw her, was in a venue that holds maybe 1,500 people. Charli has always been ambitious enough to be a headliner; now she is one. (“Miss Should Be Headliner” is a funny joke, but there’s truth in comedy, as they say.)

However, Charli finds herself at a crossroads. She’s “reached this new level of success,” as she put it in an interview, and she’s suddenly (and deservedly) popular enough that she can do pretty much whatever she wants. And what she wants to do is act.

A quick look at Charli’s filmography on IMDb shows that she has nine projects in the works. They are:

  • The Moment, an A24 film based on her own original idea.
  • Overcompensating, a Prime Video college-set comedy series from creator Benito Skinner where she serves as executive music producer and also guest stars as a fictionalized version of herself who hates singing “Boom Clap” (OK, maybe it’s not so fictionalized).
  • The Gallerist, the new movie from Birds Of Prey director Cathy Yan about a “desperate gallerist who conspires to sell a dead body at Art Basel Miami” that also stars Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.
  • Erupcja, the secret movie she filmed in Poland during Brat summer.
  • 100 Nights Of Hero, a “feminist fairy tale inspired by One Thousand And One Nights” with Emma Corrin, Maika Monroe, and Nicholas Galitzine.
  • I Want Your Sex, an intriguely-titled descent into “sex, obsession, power, betrayal, and murder,” about a fresh-faced youngster (Cooper Hoffman) who becomes the “sexual muse” for a provocative artist (Olivia Wilde).
  • Sacrifice, the English-language debut from acclaimed music video director Romain Gavras, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a Joan Of Arc-like zealous spirit who is on a mission to save the world from a fiery reckoning, as well as Chris Evans, John Malkovich, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sam Richardson, and Yung Lean.
  • Faces Of Death, a modern update of the cult horror favorite.
  • Untitled Takashi Miike Movie, an unlikely but potentially awesome pairing of Charli and the director of Audition, Ichi The Killer, and One Missed Call. There are no plot details yet, but expect the film to be violent.

That’s a lot of movies! (And one TV show!) But after seeing Charli on the Brat tour, I’m more convinced than ever that she can pull it off.

The Brat tour is a (relatively speaking) “simple” production. There’s no dancers, no band, no backup dancers — all eyes are on Charli, all the time. Even when she walks off stage to strut through the scaffolding underneath, there’s a camera operator following her, or circling the singer when she’s gyrating on the floor in one of her party-girl outfits.

There’s a confidence and effortless quality to the way that she interacts with the camera. The proven keys to success apply to both live music and movies: she knows her angles; hits her marks; trusts her collaborators (in this case, the cameraperson); and makes strong, organic choices — like spitting on the floor and licking it up, or dancing in a ripped-up shirt in the rain.

Charli also knows her limitations. Her filmography currently consists of documentaries, concert films, and voice roles in animated kid flicks The Angry Birds Movie and UglyDolls, which is why instead of headlining a four-quadrant blockbuster, she’s starting small.

“I’m enjoying learning about being on a set and learning from great directors and actors,” she told Variety. “I hate it when musicians dive into a different field, head-first, without really researching or learning much of anything about it. So I did a lot of reading to educate myself over the past three or four years before I actually did anything.”

Charli XCX is about to do a lot of things. If the Brat tour and her thoughtfulness are any indication, her acting is going to be, well, iconic.

These Are The Best Fast Food And Restaurant Deals This Month To Help You Eat On The Cheap

The Best Fast Food And Restaurant Deals FOr The Month Of May(1024x450)
Uproxx

Concert tickets, new clothes, wellness hacks, sneakers, a Nintendo Switch 2 — there are no shortage of cool things this summer that you can be spending your money on, but if you’re in the habit of checking your bank app often only to wonder how you’re going to pay for everything, have you considered how much you’re spending on food?

At a certain point, everybody realizes that the cheapest way to eat is by going to the market and putting in the work at the stove to make all of your meals, but that isn’t possible for everyone. So turning to fast food seems like a smart move, but with prices going up on pretty much everything, fast food is the silent bank killer. One meal or two might not break the bank, but if you’re picking up every meal of the day via a drive-thru or sit-down restaurant, you’re going to go broke really fast.

So we’re here to help save you some of that hard-earned cash by shouting out the best fast food and restaurant food deals you can take advantage of this month! Let’s dive in.

Applebee’s — Applebee’s $9.99 Really Big Meal Deal is getting an expansion! The deal now features your choice between a Big Cluckin’ Chicken Sandwich, Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, and the new Big Banging Burger, plus an endless serving of fries and unlimited fountain drinks. With prices like these, you have to wonder what the point of even going to a drive-thru is anymore!

Arby’s — Join Arby’s Rewards, reach $25 in spending, and you’ll get $5 off your next order. What we love about this deal is that you don’t have to hit $25 each time, the Arby’s Rewards app keeps track of each visit and dollar spent, awarding you the coupon every time you hit $25. That’s a great deal for hardcore Arby’s eaters.

Carl’s Jr. — Right now Carl’s Jr is offering a Snack Stash deal for $5.99. The deal lets you pick between any combination of three of the following: 6-piece Jalapeño Popper Bites, Waffle Fries, Onion Rings, Small Fries or Fried Zucchini. Carl’s Jr is coming for Jack in the Box’s crown for the best fast food to eat while stoned.

Checkers/Rally’s — Rally’s has just announced the $4 Unbeatable Meal Deal which features your choice of a Spicy Chicken Sandwich or Cheese Double, a value-order of fries, a cinnamon apple pie, and a small drink. Hands down, this is one of the best deals currently in fast food.

Church’s Chicken — For a limited time, you can pick up any of the two following menu items for just $4: Tender Wraps, Classic Chicken Sandwich, Crinkle Cut Fries, or 4-piece Boneless wings. It’s essentially a drinkless build your own meal from Church’s! It’s one of the better deals out there right now, so we appreciate Church’s for giving us some real value.

Del Taco — Del Taco has just unveiled a new subsection of its menu, which they call the El Big Box. For $5, you can grab the Clásico El Big Box, which features a beef & bean burrito (no cheese?), mini quesadilla, value fries, and a medium drink. $7 will get you the Mex Faves El Big Box, which features a beef and bean (again, no cheese) burrito, a grilled chicken taco, soft snack taco, mini quesadilla, and a medium drink. And for $9, you can pick up the Ameri-Mex El Big Box, which features a Double Del Cheeseburger, bean and cheese burrito (there’s the cheese!), soft snack taco, value crinkle-cut fries, and a medium drink.

Denny’s — Denny’s is offering a Buy One Get One for $1 deal on their Grand Slam breakfasts. That includes the All-American Slam (which consists of three scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, and bread) and the Original Grand Slam (two pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage).

Dunkin — For an unspecified amount of time, Dunkin’ is now offering breakfast eaters the $6 Meal Deal, which features a six-piece side of hashbrowns, a Sausage Egg & Cheese croissant, and a medium coffee.

Jack in the Box — When ordering via the Jack in the Box app, you can pick up two Jumbo Jack’s for $5. It’s not a balanced or complete meal, but two sandwiches for $5 is good enough to get you by.

KFC — For an unspecified amount of time, KFC fans can score two sides and two drinks for $7. To claim the deal, simply order via the KFC app or at the KFC website.

Long John Silver’s — For just $6, you can pick up the Fish and Chicken Basket, which features one chicken strip, one fried fish, a side, and two hush puppies. That’s a pretty great deal!

McDonald’s — The $5 Meal Deal is still going strong at McDonald’s. The meal consists of a 4-piece McNugget order, small fries, a small drink, and your choice of the McChicken or McDouble. Obviously, for best results, grab that McDouble.

Papa John’s — Pick up an XL 16-inch one topping Shaq-A-Roni pizza for just $12.99. Considering a typical XL pie from Papa John’s will cost you over $20, this is a pretty monster-sized deal.

Popeyes — From now until June 1st, you can pick up the Signature Chicken Bix Box for $6-$6.99. The box features two pieces of dark meat chicken, two regular sides, and one biscuit. This is a great deal for fans of juicy, tender dark meat.

Shake Shack — From now until June 27th you can score a free order of fries when you spend more than $10 on the Shack app every Friday. It’s not our favorite deal, considering Shake Shack’s fries aren’t the best, but hey, free fries. It’s hard to complain about that.

Subway — From now until May 31st, you can pick up any Footlong sandwich for just $6.99. To claim the deal, order through the Subway app or via the Subway website by using the code “699FL” at checkout.

Wendy’s — Wendy’s $5 Biggie Bag is still one of our favorite fast food deals right now. For just $5 you can score either a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, Crispy Chicken Sandwich or Double Stack, plus a four piece order of nuggets, small fries, and a drink. What a steal.

Wingstop — Wingstop’s new Hot Honey Rub Box will get you three chicken tenders tossed in the brand’s new Hot Honey Rub seasoning and a side of Hot Honey Rub fries for $8. Not the greatest deal, but hey, it’s new!

How Zero Zero Entertainment Is Bringing Your Favorite Stars’ Comic Book Dreams To Life

metroverse_Lisa_MetroBoomin_MGK(1024x450)
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

As a music writer who faithfully reads new comics releases every Wednesday and somehow turns Free Comic Book Day into a budget-busting free-for-all every May, Zero Zero Entertainment is a godsend. Josh Frankel, the owner and founder, spun off the brand from his prior one, Z2 Comics, to continue delivering quality comic books based on ideas from some of today’s top recording artists, such as Alter Ego, by K-pop star Lisa, and Metro Boomin’s Metroverse.

Frankel is a comics guy, through and through, who discovered that there’s an overlooked niche in the medium: comics by folks who may well be just as big fans of the hobby who have for years been hamstrung by low expectations from gatekeepers within the industry. Picture the Comic Book Shop Guy from The Simpsons, but with actual power. The end result has been stories and books that feel more like cash grabs than actual comics from musicians who love comics.

Josh’s plan is simple: Becoming a one-stop shop for those artists looking to put their ideas to a different kind of page, pairing them with writers and artists who can bring those ideas to life, and making the process pleasant for everybody involved. In a great conversation ranging from the works of Alan Moore to the surprising quality control practices of Machine Gun Kelly, Josh told Uproxx all about how he turns hitmakers into modern-day superheroes.

How do you get to be the go-to guy for rappers, pop stars, K-pop stars, and rock stars who want to get into comic books?

I think that’s a feature, not a bug. I like music, right? It’s not someone who doesn’t understand. I listen to music and I have very eclectic music taste. If you look at my music right now, it’s like David Bowie, Earthgang, Biz Markie, ambient Japanese composers. And I’ve been devouring comics since I was 12 years old.

I think the reason I can do it well with people who work in music is I don’t bring my own ego into it. What I try to do is work with them to get their idea to be what they want and to visually capture it the right way. I don’t come in with being like, “This is what I think this book should be.” I come in, kind of get what they’re talking about, and then give them these options. And I tend to have a pretty good batting average with it.

How do you go about presenting them with the idea? Do you show them something similar to what they wanted to try, or do you mock something up and bring it to them? How do you get into that?

This is actually a really good question, and it’s not one-to-one for all of them. Some have songs more developed, some already have a knowledge of comics and have art ideas. But the flip side, and again, some people are more involved than others, but what I’ll say is generally there’s usually a sort of creative conversation that starts and then the biggest thing I do is: I take a day to meditate on it. I’m a big meditation guy. I do it like an hour a day and I let that guide what I want, and then I usually send them a bunch of artists and see what art they respond to.

But I think one of the mistakes we have in American comics, though I weirdly think it’s a good mistake, is we think the writer matters, not the art. In American comics, they put the writer as top billing. But you really need to focus on the art first and foremost and finding that right algorithm. And it’s not even always the most famous artist. It’s the one that works best and is really good.

Lalisa Comics

I think that you’re absolutely right. I think that a lot of comic book fans actually probably don’t read the comics all that thoroughly. They’re looking at the art first. And obviously, yes, I’ve seen some terrific writing that is really brutal to try to get through because the art is not what should match.

I’ll say this: you can make a good comic with a meh, even bad script, and good or great art. You could not make a good comic with bad art, no matter how good the script is. Best example, and I’ll say this on record because, whatever: Alan Moore did some comics for Avatar where the art was subpar that just weren’t that good — and you’re talking about the greatest comic writer of all time.

So Alter Ego, because that’s the one that put this in front of us: How did that one get started? What’s the concept behind it? What were you trying to say? What was she trying to say, and how did you mesh your creative visions?

They were wanting to do a comic to be a story piece in the album, and she had an idea she came up with. And so a lot of it really was finding the right art and structuring the idea. There was a lot of work done already.

I think I can confidently say that, because obviously if you listen to the album, read the comic, you may get some glimpses into her mind space in life. It isn’t hard to figure out, especially given the pressures of being a pop star. It’s funny, I’ve worked with a lot of famous people and I think the biggest thing that I feel bad for them about is: nobody feels bad for you. Because you’re like shit’s going wrong, they’re like, “Oh yeah, well you’re rich, you’re famous, who cares?” It’s like, no, you’re still human.

I would never want to be famous, to that degree.

So she has five different alter egos in this and each of the alter egos, of course, has to have a very distinctive visual style in order to separate them and convey those personalities. What do you do to create those distinctive personalities? What are some of the techniques and short visual shortcuts that work?

For her, it was a bit unique, because they already had the alter egos, they had a lot done, because they had the visual vibe, they had that, so we just had to build on it. I need to say hers was more cooked than most, and they were designed, and they looked like comic characters.

So it was pretty easy. I have to say from a creative point of view, this one was mainly getting the art right and the story structure right and that was the rest… I don’t want to say it’s not easy, but of the ones, it was one of the easier ones to do.

Zero Zero Entertainment

So in the course of creating comics for artists, have you been introduced to music you wouldn’t have ordinarily listened to or didn’t know? And did you become a huge fan of anybody that you worked with as a result?

I absolutely listen to a lot more music, because as a rule, whenever I work with an artist, I listen to their music and by and large, I’ve liked most of their music. There’s only been a handful of artists I’ve worked with who I didn’t like their music. I’m not going to say who. And some I was already somewhat of a fan of before. I actually was a fan of Vince. I liked his whole persona. I liked a lot of his music, hip-hop-wise, my tastes skew old school and sort of weird. So the Odd Future Crew, Gorillaz, Vince Staples, Logic, those people, I always enjoyed the geeky stuff and again, very old stuff, too.

The one that kind of really impressed me. Again, there’s a lot that did, but Machine Gun Kelly not as much as… I mean, his music was better than I realized. Hotel Diablo is a very good hip-hop album. It gets a weird rap, but it and Tickets To My Downfall are really good albums. He really cared about the comic, and he loved comic books.

I met with him five times to go over coloring notes, and his notes were good. And I was like, “Oh, you really give a shit about this.” And there’s an artistry that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

Do you have any bucket list artists that you would love to write a comic book with?

I love the band Ghost, but they’re doing a comic with Dark Horse, and I can’t wait to read it. It means I’m not doing the comic with them. But I love Ghost. They rule so hard. It’s my favorite band.

Wait, actually, you know what? I take it all back. There’s one person I really want to work with, and I’d give my bucket list person: Werner Herzog. That’s the one person. On anything. I love his movies. I think he’s the most interesting man alive. If he had some comic idea, I’m sure it’d be brilliant.

What do you find to be the most fulfilling part about working with artists creatively? Have you learned anything about yourself, about your craft, about the business of comic books that you don’t think you might not have otherwise learned? And what are your hopes for the comics industry and the ongoing connection between music and comics?

I’ve definitely learned a lot about dealing with people, for better or worse, and the thing that I’ve learned the most in dealing with people is “kill them with kindness.”

Nobody likes to be disagreed with. So you should really hold anger unless you absolutely need to. The idea of the angry businessman is a dumb idea. It can work, but it’s not as effective as being nice. Try to avoid confrontation, try to avoid angry confrontation as much as possible. You can have a confrontation that isn’t angry and be honest, but you don’t have to be an asshole.

BigXthaPlug Drops A Soulful Acoustic Version Of ‘Holy Ground’ With Jessie Murph For Amazon Music

Fresh off his surprise performance at Stagecoach Festival, Texas rapper BigXthaPlug is doubling down on his country aspirations. After dropping “All The Way” with Bailey Zimmerman, he’s now teaming up with Amazon Music for an acoustic version of his Take Care (Deluxe) standout, “Holy Ground.” Stripping down the hard-hitting 808s of the original version, the acoustic edition adds in a thrumming guitar riff, allowing the grit in Murph’s voice to cut through the haunting chorus. The end result turns the thumping street anthem into a far-gazing Western ballad that bridges the sonic gap between genres to highlight the emotive, evocative storytelling inherent to both.

BigX’s breakout this year has seen him crossover into more than just country music mainstays. In April, he made his television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! performing a medley including “Mmhmmm” and “The Largest,” the latter of which has made its way into America’s living rooms via that one Wing Stop commercial that has become truly inescapable if you happen to be a basketball fan. The big fella continues to endear himself to a wider fanbase, ensuring that his reach will stretch far beyond his native Dallas.

You can listen to the acoustic version of “Holy Ground” on Amazon Music here.
