Stephen Colbert’s ‘Unlikely’ Friendship With The Late Toby Keith Taught Him Big Life Lessons, He Emotionally Explained

On February 5, Toby Keith — a country music favorite known for hit songs like “As Good As I Once Was” and “Red Solo Cup” — died after a years-long battle with stomach cancer. Tributes poured in after the news was revealed yesterday (February 6), mostly from fellow country music artists, it seemed. On The Late Show last night, though, Stephen Colbert delivered a thoughtful tribute to Keith.

Colbert started, “I was shocked and saddened when I saw the news this morning. I knew Toby was ill — he’d been fighting stomach cancer for some time — but I still had hope that we would see each other again and that we would hear him on this stage. Because I was lucky enough to become friends with Toby over the years, as improbable as that seems.”

He then told a story about a 2006 interview he had with Keith on The Colbert Report, explaining just how memorable and formative the experience ended up being for him:

“Back then, there was a not-so-helpful legend that I had knives out for some of my guests, and it didn’t help that at the beginning, I sometimes did. And I remember having some kind of plan for Toby, I think related to his ‘boot in your ass’ song. But right before I went on stage, I remember vividly looking down at my shoes and saying, ‘What are you doing? You’re a host. He’s your guest. Make him feel welcome. See who he is.’ And what do you know? And we hit it off like a house afire. I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed talking to Toby Keith.”

(The “‘boot in your ass’ song” refers to Keith’s post-9/11 single “Courtesy Of The Red, White, And Blue (The Angry American),” which sparked a feud with Natalie Maines of The Chicks.)

Colbert noted he and Keith ran into each other in a studio hallway after the taping. Keith told him, “Hey man: You do a great job, whatever the f*ck it is you do.” Colbert “took that as the greatest compliment,” and to this day, a prized possession he keeps in his office is a small pillow gifted to him from his then-head writer, which has that quote stitched onto it.

Colbert added, “That day, Toby taught me to not pre-judge a guest, and to have my intention, but to keep my eyes open to the reality of who they are. And for that lesson, and for a lot of other things, I’m always gonna be grateful.”

The host noted he and Keith enjoyed a professional relationship for years, including when Colbert inducted Keith into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2015. He also said it wasn’t just him who acknowledged their friendship might seem unusual: “I think he enjoyed how unlikely a pair we seemed. I sure did. You know, like, when people are excited when a duck and a horse are friends? Well for the record, I was the duck.”

Colbert also pointed out that things may not have always been as they seemed with Keith, saying, “Toby was always surprising people. You would think you know who Toby Keith was, and then you’re watching [Barack] Obama’s Nobel acceptance speech and there’s Toby Keith giving him a standing ovation! Toby, what are you doing this time?”

The host wrapped up by saying, “Toby taught me not to judge people too quickly, and with his passing, I will try to remember that again. It’s something we all need to remember. ‘Cause I’m sure Toby and I disagreed about many things, as so many Americans do these days. More and more of us are angrier angrier with each other.”

Colbert then got emotional, continuing, “But tonight, I will issue this invitation to anybody: I do not care who you are. I will meet you at this place. I will meet you at being broken-hearted that Toby Keith is gone. Thank you, big dog.”

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Shows Us How The World Went Silent In A Terrifying Trailer With Lupita Nyong’o

The first trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One is finally here confirming reports that the prequel will have a presence at this year’s Super Bowl.

Starring Lupita Nyong’o, A Quiet Place: Day One will further reveal the alien invasion that led to the world going quiet. Based on the heart-pumping trailer, fans of the horror/sci-fi series will get a front row seat to the devastating arrival of the alien creatures that hunt by noise. As Nyong’o character navigates the fiery carnage, she’ll be helped along the way by Djimon Honsou as he reprises his role from A Quiet Place: Place II.

Outside of what we’ve seen in the trailer, not much else is known about the plot of A Quiet Place: Day One. But from the looks of things, it will start out significantly less quiet than the other films as the prequel leans heavily into a full-on alien invasion and all the chaos and explosions that come with.

However, the trailer promises that the film will reveal “why our world went quiet,” so expect the noise level to drop the as characters learn the only way to survive is to not make a sound.

A Quiet Place: Day One opens in theaters on June 28.

A24’s ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ Trailer With Kristen Stewart Is Full Of Sex, Violence, And Buff Bodies

Before Love Lies Bleeding premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival to strong reviews, star Kristen Stewart teased that the sex scenes in the A24 movie will “shock” people. She added, “It was really sexy. And I don’t mean from an outsider’s perspective: I felt turned on by it, and it was cool to have people witness that.” You can now see the sex scenes — and the romance and violence and Ed Harris looking super creepy — for yourself in the trailer above.

Director Rose Glass told Indiewire that she asked the cast, including Stewart and Katy O’Brian (who bonded over cat pee), to watch films like Crash (the good one) and Showgirls to prepare for Love Lies Bleeding. “That was a weird list of films I put together,” she said. “I don’t think many of them I was conscious of while we were writing, we were really just focusing on these characters and this story and the tone. So it was really more in hindsight, as we’re in prep, trying to sort of give [the cast] of the world this story takes place in.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

From Director Rose Glass comes an electric new love story; reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.

Love Lies Bleeding, which also stars Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco, opens in theaters on March 8th.

Nobody Knows Where Usher Is Right Now (In The Fictional Universe Of A New Super Bowl Halftime Show Teaser, At Least)

Usher has a full schedule over the next few days: He’s dropping a new album, Coming Home, on Friday, and a couple days later, he’s performing the Super Bowl Halftime Show. So, it would be an awful time for the entertainer to go missing, but that is just what has happened… not in real life, but in a new teaser video from Apple Music.

The video starts with Ludacris, Lil Jon, and Taraji P. Henson hanging around outdoors (outside of a fancy Las Vegas hotel, perhaps?). The trio then FaceTimes Apple CEO Tim Cook (who’s wearing an Usher graphic tee), and he asks how a dinner they had last night went. They then break the news that they lost Usher and don’t know where he is, which prompts a disappointed Cook to hang up. He then texts the group, “You will find him!”

This presumably sets up a series that will continued to be shared in the days leading up to the big performance. Perhaps most notably, though, this ad might serve as a teaser of Ludacris and Lil Jon joining Usher to perform their hit collaboration “Yeah!” during the halftime show. We’ll know for sure this weekend.

Check out the video above.

Dad shares family’s confusion when his young son demanded ‘people chicken’ for dinner

One of the best parts of having kids is having a full-time, front row seat to the way they interpret and use language as they grow. There’s the classic mispronunciations of “spaghetti,” of course, but there are also one-of-a-kind terms they coin based on their limited vocabulary and the unique way they look at the world.

Kids say the darnedest things, and as Dillon White shared on Instagram, one of those darned things could be a young child requesting “people chicken” for dinner. Not just requesting, but demanding: “I WANT PEOPLE CHICKEN!!”

People chicken. There are only so many ways to interpret that, all of which could land you on the FBI’s radar.

Of course, it was a small child saying this, so there had to be an explanation.

White explained that he and his wife tried everything to get their kiddo to clarify what he meant by “people chicken,” including having him draw a picture of what he was wanting. Unfortunately, the stick figure person he drew did not help relieve any concerns that their child might be a cannibal.

Finally, White’s 7-year-old daughter came up with a solution that revealed what her younger brother wanted. It was not, in fact, chicken made out of people. Phew.

Watch:

It’s true. Once you see Colonel Sanders’ bow tie as a stick figure, you can’t unsee it.

Even KFC’s official account responded to the video, writing, “You see it once, and you can’t unsee it.” HA.

White was not alone in his kid seeing the stick figure Col. Sanders.

“The SAME thing (conversation) happened to us 22 years ago!! My toddler was practically throwing himself trying to make us understand that he wanted ‘Old Man Chicken’!!!!!! And yup, it was KFC he was asking for. We have referred to it as ‘Old Man Chicken’ all these years now 😂!!” shared on commenter.

“About halfway through we figured out what he was talking about but that’s only because my kids have been saying for years that the KFC man is a stick figure with a really big head. Tell Mason he’s not the only kid who thought that.Lol 😂😂😂” shared another.

“I think I’ve been working with children too long because the instant you said people chicken my brain said ‘that’s kfc,’ 😂 wrote another.

Other people chimed in to share their kids’ hilarious naming conventions for chicken places:

“My son was in tears for ‘Pinky Toe.’ Turns out he thought the Chick-fil-A emblem was a foot 😂,” wrote one parent.

“Lol. My daughter refers to Chick-fil-A as ‘foot’ because their logo actually reserved a footprint. So interesting thinking of the different ways that children see things that we adults don’t. It’s amazing!” shared another.

“My kids call Buffalo Wild Wings ‘stinky skunks’ because from a distance, the logo looks like a skunk to them. We went through a similar very confusing moment to figure that one out as you can imagine, 🤦♀️🤣” shared another.

White is right. We should let kids name everything. They’re so much better at it than adults are.

The 1975 Shares ‘Now Is The Hour,’ An Intimate New Song From ‘The New Look’ Soundtrack

We are just a week out from Apple TV+’s new original drama series, The New Look, which tells the story of fashion designers Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and their contemporaries as they launched a brand new era of fashion on the heels of World War II.

Ahead of The New Look‘s premiere, The 1975 has shared their new song, “Now Is The Hour” from the show’s soundtrack.

On the short, but sweet song, lead vocalist Matty Healy is lamenting saying goodbye to a lover, but promises to always wait for them.

“Now is the hour / When we must say goodbye / Soon you’ll be sailing / Far across the sea / While you’re away / Then remember me / When you return, you’ll find me / Waiting here,” sings Healy.

The song, along with the entirety of The New Look‘s soundtrack, was produced by Jack Antonoff. This past weekend, Antonoff won the Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical) award at the 2024 Grammys. In an interview with British GQ published last month, Antonoff expressed his excitement toward the current landscape of music.

“Music is in an exciting time because a lot of people are rediscovering the joy of the unpredictability of instruments,” he said. “I like hearing live drums, live bass instead of subs. A lot more bands are popping up. It’s a nice thing. There’s a community to it. When you witness the community of a band playing, it can be really beautiful and hopeful.”

You can listen to “Now Is The Hour” above.

The New Look premieres on Apple TV+ 2/14 with three episodes, and additional episodes streaming weekly.

The New Look soundtrack is out 4/3 via Shadow Of The City and Dirty Hit. Find more information here.

Beyoncé Announced Her Cécred Line Of Hair Care Products With A Cryptic Trailer

beyonce

Beyoncé has something special up her sleeve. No, it doesn’t look like the long-awaited visuals for her Renaissance album. But perhaps something just as sacred. Or shall we say, “Cécred?”

Tonight (February 6), Bey took to social media to announce her new line of haircare products, called Cécred. As Bey is known to do, she kept very mum about what to expect. A video shared to Instagram shows a montage of people washing, combing, and brushing their hair. Though we’re not sure what kinds of products to expect — in the way of shampoos, conditioners, and/or dyes — Bey did reveal that Cécred is, in fact, a hair care line, simply by captioning the post, “Hair is sacred.”

Also in the post’s caption, she revealed Cécred arrives Feb. 20, and tagged the handle to the brand’s official Instagram account. On Cécred’s Instagram page is a bio reading “Haircare by @beyonce,” as well as the brand’s official website.

The website plays the same video from the social handles, however, invites visitors to enter their email address and phone numbers to receive updates.

At the time of writing, neither Bey nor Cécred have indicated if the products will be available to purchase in stores.

You can see the clip above.
