These days, there’s a music festival to cater to pretty much any sort of music fan, whether it’s a pop-punk lover rocking out at When We Were Young or hip-hop heads enjoying Rolling Loud California. Now, we have one for fans of ’90s emo and indie rock: Today (February 27) brings news of Best Friends Forever, a brand new festival headlined by Bright Eyes, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Cap’n Jazz. The inaugural edition is set to go down from October 11 to 13 at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

With Shōgun set to unleash a sprawling samurai epic on FX that critics are already favorably calling the next Game of Thrones, the show will no doubt raise questions about its historical accuracy. Based on the 1975 best-selling novel by James Clavell, the story behind Shōgun has an interesting beginning that is actually inspired by true events, but with a whole lot of dramatic flourishes.

We’ll break it down for you.

Is FX’s ‘Shōgun’ Based On A True Story?

The characters and events in Clavell’s are entirely fictional. However, Shōgun‘s main character, John Blackthorne, is based on a historical figure named William Adams. In the 1600s, Adams was among a small handful of survivors whose battered ship anchored off the coast of Japan. He became a retainer to a real-life shogun named Tokugawa Ieyasu. Fascinated by Adams’ skill at shipbuilding, the two men turned Japan into a major hub for overseas trade.

Via Brittanica:

Adams oversaw the construction of Western-style ships, wrote letters on behalf of the shogun encouraging Dutch and English traders to come to Japan, and then officiated between the shogunate and the traders who began visiting the country. In 1613 he helped to establish an English factory (trading post) for the East India Company at Hirado, in Kyushu northwest of Nagasaki. Adams was allowed to undertake several overseas voyages between 1614 and 1619, traveling as far as Southeast Asia.

While the book Shōgun obviously took creative liberties by changing the name of characters and adding in dramatic battles and political intrigue, the story was actually inspired by a real-life Englishman who shipwrecked in Japan.

Shōgun premieres February 27 on FX with episodes available to stream the next day on Hulu.

As happens fairly regularly at this time of year, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony released a new mock draft. This one was an early look-ahead at the 2025 NBA Draft, where Cooper Flagg headlines an interesting class of prospects.

Flagg’s status as the No. 1 pick was not something that became a discussion point on social media, but instead it was who Givony had mocked to the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round. At No. 39 overall, Givony had Bronny James going to the Blazers, marking the first time ESPN had bumped Bronny from the 2024 draft class to the 2025 draft class, which really isn’t a major surprise given James is returning from cardiac arrest this summer and has been playing on a minutes restriction as he works his way back onto the floor at USC.

However, because it’s the son of LeBron James, this got posted about by some of the big aggregator Twitter accounts, one of which caught LeBron’s attention who fired off a pair of since-deleted tweets asking for people to let Bronny “be a kid” and just generally getting upset about mock drafts existing.

Almost immediately, people pointed out that LeBron is largely responsible for the hype and conversation surrounding Bronny (both actively and passively), and on Tuesday’s episode of First Take, Stephen A. Smith pointed that out in a segment with Shannon Sharpe and Chiney Ogwumike, saying it was LeBron’s fault — even if it’s perfectly understandable why he would be so excited about the possibility of playing with his son.

Typically you would expect Sharpe, who is LeBron’s No. 1 fan in the sports media space, would come back at Stephen A., but in this instance even Shannon had to note that LeBron has played the biggest role in hyping up Bronny. Most notably Sharpe pointed to his tweet last year about how Bronny was already better than some NBA players, which he compared to how LaVar Ball talked about Lonzo.

As Smith and Sharpe are both sure to point out, Bronny has done nothing to warrant any criticism or backlash, but by nature of being LeBron James’ son it’s going to happen. LeBron, being a proud and excited father, has only fueled the conversation with what he’s said about his desire to play with Bronny and how good he thinks Bronny is already.

However, Bronny’s health situation and recovery has forced a bit of a reset for him, and that has made the conversation about him as an NBA prospect even trickier and throws a wrench in the grander plans of LeBron to play with Bronny, though, which he’s stated multiple times is his last major goal (aside from trying to win more championships). The health scare also almost assuredly changed the perspective of LeBron, Bronny, and the James family towards Bronny’s future, so it also stands to reason that LeBron has had a bit of a shift himself into genuinely wanting Bronny to be able to work at his own pace.

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

MGMT – Loss Of Life

MGMT, the duo comprising vocalist Andrew VanWyngarden and multi-instrumentalist Ben Goldwasser, have one of the most fascinating career trajectories in contemporary music. They satirized rock stardom only to be embraced by the very industry they critiqued, leading them to pursue outré stylings on records like 2010’s Congratulations and 2013’s MGMT. They came back to synth-pop on 2018’s Little Dark Age, their most accessible work since Oracular Spectacular. On Loss Of Life, their sixth album, MGMT resuscitates the psychedelic leanings of their sophomore album on tracks like “Nothing To Declare” and “People In The Streets” but keeps the pop-centric songwriting à la Elephant 6. It’s their first for Mom + Pop, so they are now officially an indie band after cementing themselves as one of the definitive indie bands of the late aughts.

Hurray For The Riff Raff – The Past Is Still Alive

Alynda Segarra’s songs are heartfelt and spellbinding. As Hurray For The Riff Raff, they chronicle universal themes like grief, youth, and love with disarming specificity and a memoirist’s gift for storytelling. The Past Is Still Alive, their magnificent new record that reunites them with producer Brad Cook, is full of songs like these. Whether it’s the country-fried travelogue “Hawkmoon” or the twangy, moving ode to queer existence “Colossus Of Roads,” Segarra’s pen remains as sharp as ever.

Bonny Light Horseman – “When I Was Younger”

Each member of folk trio Bonny Light Horseman is a singular talent. There’s Anaïs Mitchell, who wrote the Broadway musical Hadestown, Eric D. Johnson, who also performs with Fruit Bats, and Josh Kaufman, who has worked with everyone from Taylor Swift to The War On Drugs. When they combine powers, it’s transcendent. Such is the case with “When I Was Younger,” their first single for revered indie label Jagjaguwar. It’s a stunning paean to both lost youth and gained wisdom, its soft piano chords and discordant guitar solo conveying the conflicted emotions that aging can bring.

Perfume Genius – “What A Difference A Day Makes”

“What A Difference A Day Makes” has been passed down over the years, as most standards are. Mexican songwriter María Grever originally penned it in the 1930s, and Dinah Washington popularized it in the English language a couple of decades later. Now, Mike Hadreas, who makes swirling indie-pop as Perfume Genius, has shared his own rendition. Hadreas’ version is starkly minimalist, soft in tone and texture. There’s seldom anything save for Hadreas’ trembling, soothing vocals and gentle piano. Embellishments like quiet horns and cooing harmonies are here only for atmosphere, coming and going like the days and hours themselves.

Glitterer – Rationale

Glitterer is a band now. The project’s genesis as Ned Russin’s solo endeavor has now expanded to include a more varied instrumental palette, such as (ahem) glittering synthesizers, rich guitar tones, and pummeling drums. But that doesn’t stop Russin and co. from discarding post-hardcore entirely on Rationale, the group’s latest album. Having honed his chops as co-vocalist and bassist of Kingston kingpins Title Fight, Russin’s vision for his new pursuit is his most realized yet. Cramming 12 songs into a speedy 21-and-a-half minutes, Glitterer doesn’t ask for much of your attention, but they shouldn’t have to; to put it simply, the songs rip.

Nourished By Time – “Hand On Me”

Marcus Brown, the mastermind behind Nourished By Time, released one of the best albums of 2023 with Erotic Probiotic 2, a brilliant blend of synth-pop, new jack swing, and Baltimore club. Freshly signed to XL Recordings, Brown is back with an EP next month, Catching Chickens, named after the footwork-testing scene in Rocky II. “Hand On Me,” its lead single, is everything that’s wonderful about Nourished By Time condensed into a three-minute package: scurrying drums, catchy synth melodies, and Brown’s idiosyncratic baritone.

Bat For Lashes – “The Dream Of Delphi”

On her latest single as Bat For Lashes, Natasha Khan embodies a character she calls “the Motherwitch.” “The Dream Of Delphi,” the single in question and the title track of her upcoming record, is named after her three-year-old daughter, Delphi. Khan invented the character to explore new motherhood from another perspective, further opening the creative wellspring the English artist has drawn from throughout her storied career. The song itself is beautiful, building on a repeated melody that yields to harps, strings, and, eventually, IDM drums. “The Dream Of Delphi” is one from which you’ll never want to wake up.

King Isis – “Monki”

King Isis is primed for their bona fide breakout moment. Having already released singles like “Make It Up” and her Scales EP last year, they’re now releasing another EP, Shed, next month. Whereas “Make It Up” dabbled in synth-pop, King Isis’ latest single, “Monki,” takes cues from ‘90s alternative rock with its distorted guitars and snarling delivery.

Real Estate – Daniel

Real Estate have been a tight-knit indie rock operating machine since their eponymous debut in 2009. For their sixth album, Daniel, however, they recruited a new collaborator: a guy named Daniel. To be more specific, they’ve worked with Daniel Tashian, a songwriter and producer best known for his work on Kacey Musgraves’ genre-bending masterpiece Golden Hour. Still, Daniel is pure Real Estate. Its lived-in melodies, earthen guitar tones, and winsome harmonies coalesce to form yet another wonderful Real Estate record.

Mac DeMarco – “Boku Wa Chotto”

It has been over 50 years since Japanese songwriter Haruomi Hosono released his influential debut solo record, Hosono House. To celebrate its five-decade anniversary, several musicians have banded together to create a compilation album of covers from it. Indie rocker Mac DeMarco’s take on “Boku Wa Chotto” retains the original’s relaxed yet freewheeling spirit with its dulcet acoustic guitar and DeMarco’s mellow vocal performance.

I have long held a belief that Ariana Grande really wants to be a rapper. She often works with rappers, sings over rap beats, and has even said she wants to release her music like a rapper. On her next album, Eternal Sunshine, she’ll take another big step in that direction, employing one of rap music’s favorite tropes: A feature from her grandma, who appears on the tracklist as “Nonna” (Italian for Grandmother). Nonna appears on the final track, “Ordinary Things,” which suggests an outro similar to Common’s “Pop’s Rap” sketches.

Grande has been teasing the album’s release for some months, releasing the energetic single “Yes, And?” in January and following it up with a remix featuring her idol Mariah Carey earlier this month. Netflix‘s 2024 schedule includes a new season of Bridgerton and Squid Game, the Adam Sandler-in-space movie, and a likely price hike.

“We expect to see rate increases this year,” analysts at UBS Securities wrote in a research note about Netflix, according to Variety. No specifics were given, but when even multi-billion dollar companies like Amazon are raising the cost of streaming service subscriptions, expect others (like Netflix) to follow.

That, along with a ramp-up in revenue from its ad-supported tier, should push the company’s total revenue growth in 2024 to 15 percent, per the analysts’ estimates, compared with 7 percent growth in 2023. Last October, Netflix increased the price of the Basic plan from $9.99 to $11.99 per month in the U.S., and also hiked prices of the tier in the U.K. and France.

During a recent earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters told analysts that “we largely put price increases on hold while we were rolling out the paid sharing work because we saw that as a form of substitute price increase.” But, he continued, “now that we’re through that, we’re able to resume our sort of standard approach towards price increases.”

As plans continue to get more expensive, Netflix will have to find new ways to get people to stick around. An Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal reunion is a good start.

According to Reddit, Rodrigo starts her show around 8:30 p.m. local time with the energetic “Bad Idea, Right?” as her opening number. She then goes on to perform for 90 minutes, ending her set around 10 p.m. — just so any younger audience members can make it home and for the venue’s curfew.

It’s unclear if her set start times will change outside of North America, but only time will tell on that.

Olivia Rodrigo started her Guts World Tour with a high-energy show in Palm Springs, California over the weekend, and fans can’t wait to see her on the upcoming stops. Considering she has two albums under her belt now, there were questions about exactly what she would be playing and how long her set would be.

In total, Rodrigo’s setlist consisted of 22 songs, including her hits “Drivers License” and “Get Him Back.”

One user on Reddit asked about what they should expect when attending Rodrigo’s upcoming show in Houston, mainly in terms of the set times. Someone else replied, using her Palm Springs show as an example. According to that, Rodrigo’s current tour opener, Chappell Roan, started at 7:30 and was done by 8 p.m. that night.

For Rodrigo’s set, fans didn’t have to wait too long, as she kicked things off at 8:30. And what better way to make an entrance than by rocking out to “Bad Idea, Right?” with the entire crowd? She goes on to perform for a full hour-and-thirty-minutes, meaning her set ends somewhere around 10. This gives plenty of time for the stadium crowds to get out and head home on time, no matter what age you are.

Now that 21 Savage has wrapped up his homecoming concerts overseas, the Atlanta (by way of London) rapper turns his sights a little closer to home for his first headlining tour in over five years — which is fitting, considering his new album is called American Dream. The American Dream tour will start in May and be supported by fellow A-Town MC JID, as well as Nardo Wick, and Savage’s artist 21 Lil Harold.
