To be clear, John Stamos has no involvement with the motion picture known as Barbie. He’s not in it, he’s not a producer, but he is, apparently, a very passionate fan.

After learning of the recent Oscar snubs, which saw both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig get denied nominations while Ryan Gosling was honored with a nom for Best Supporting Actor, Stamos dropped a new Instagram video where he and his wife, Caitlin McHugh, recreated a scene from Barbie.

While the video did not address the Oscar controversy, Stamos did voice his thoughts in the caption:

This one goes out to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie who crafted a film that was both a critical success and a cultural phenomenon, delving into feminist themes through the lens of Barbie and challenging patriarchal norms. This movie not only resonated deeply, but also grossed OVER a billion dollars. Yet, in a twist of irony, both women were snubbed by the Academy. Everyone go re-watch Barbie tonight.

Stamos isn’t alone in shining a light on Robbie and Gerwig’s Oscar snubs for Barbie. America Ferrera called the situation “incredibly disappointing” and Gosling issued a statement chastising the Academy for overlooking their significant contributions to the film.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” Gosling wrote via The Wrap. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Squid Game is Netflix‘s biggest show ever, and it’s not even close. According to numbers provided by the streaming service, over 2.2 billion minutes of the hyper-violent South Korean series were viewed in its first 91 days of release. It’s the only show in Netflix history to cross the two billon mark (in second place is Stranger Things season four with 1.8 billion). The success of Squid Game led to Emmy wins (including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Lee Yoo-mi), a spinoff reality series, and so much merchandise.

Will Squid Game be able to replicate its success in season two? We’ll find out soon. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season, including plot details, the cast, and when it’s coming out.

Plot

If you somehow don’t know the premise of Squid Game, basically, the show follows 456 contestants who risk their lives in a series of games to win millions of dollars. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is keeping plot details about season two a secret, with a few exceptions. “You know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one,” he told the Hollywood Reporter, “so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character.”

When Netflix officially renewed Squid Game for season two, Hwang wrote in a letter, “And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round.”

Cast

Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun) is back, as is Lee Byung-hun (Front Man), Wi Ha-jun (Hwang Jun-ho), and Gong Yoo (the Recruiter). Other season one stars, even the dead ones, could return in season two as well. New cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.

Release Date

Squid Game season two will premiere this year, as confirmed in a letter from Netflix to its shareholders (the letter also mentions Bridgerton and The Diplomat returning in 2024). No date has been announced yet, however.

This week, Netflix announced that it has plans to retire the no-ads Basic plan, also known as the “Old Netflix” we used to know and love. The news comes just days after Netflix’s Q4 earnings reported that ad-tier membership grew almost 70%. So, to keep the momentum going, the streamer doesn’t want to give you any other option but to check out its flashy new ads.

The basic plan will disappear in Canada and the U.K. in the second quarter of 2024, and possibly more regions later in the year. This means that the lowest tier available will be the $6.99 ad-supported plan. In the ad-supported tier, you can expect to see an “average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour” ranging in everything from car ads to L’Oreal night cream commercials before your viewing of Emily in Paris.

Netflix ensures customers that with the ad plan, they get a “better plan than Basic, more streams, higher resolution with downloads. And of course, the real benefit is they get access to all these amazing stories at a lower effective price.” Amazing stories indeed!

This is just the latest change for Netflix — last year, the streamer jacked up prices again after luring everyone in with Suits. Who knows what show they will revive next?

Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Jon Stewart is returning to host The Daily Show. For one day a week, at least: according to the Hollywood Reporter, he’ll host Monday episodes only until the inevitable Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump showdown. His first episode back will be February 12.

As for the rest of the week, The Daily Show will continue using a rotating group of hosts, likely including Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, and Dulcé Sloan.

“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” Chris McCarthy, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios president, said in a statement. “In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.”

Stewart hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, when Trevor Noah took over. “It didn’t feel like I was singing as joyful a song as I wanted to be singing, but my life was still really good,” he explained about his decision to leave. “I had wonderful moments at the show, and I didn’t feel it was a burden. I just didn’t know what else to do with it, this gift — and being allowed to be on TV is a gift.” Stewart added that he “never felt the weight of the world,” but “I felt the weight of the team. I had this group of people who were industrious, talented, funny as f*ck, and raring to go, and my mind was wandering.”

James Blake, Fatboy Slim, Idris Elba, and more are among this year’s lineup for the Detroit Movement Festival. The event is set to take place from May 25 to 27 at Detroit’s Hart Plaza.

As for what to expect, Blake will be doing a DJ set. Actor Idris Elba will be DJ’ing during the weekend also, as he is going to do a back-to-back set with Kevin Saunderson. Fatboy Slim will also perform in a headlining slot.

Other acts on the 2024 lineup include Floating Points, Honey Dijon, Avalon Emerson, DJ Minx, Gorgon City, Mount Kimbie, Skream, Sama’ Abdulhadi, Joseph Capriati, and many more.

Tickets for the Detroit Movement Festival are currently on sale. The festival offers both 3-day and 1-day pass options. General Admission for the whole weekend starts at $289 plus fees but will increase, as this price is for Wave 1. The single-day GA tickets start at $139.

There is also an option to buy VIP tickets, which include private bathrooms and a bar, special viewing areas, pop-up sets in the VIP spaces, complimentary massages, and more. The 3-day VIP pass starts at $419 + fees during Wave 2. (Wave 1 VIP tickets previously sold out.) Single-day VIP tickets are $189 currently.

The Solar Opposites are back. Yeah buddy! The very funny Hulu animated series is returning for a Valentine’s Day special, in which Korvo (Dan Stevens), Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone), Terry (Thomas Middleditch), and Jesse (Mary Mack) declare war on the holiday. Things almost instantly go wrong. There’s violent birds (between Solar Opposites and The Boy and The Heron, anti-bird propaganda is out of control), a giant wedding ring around the Earth, and a Titanic parody involving Korvo and Terry.

Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty, while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food, and fun stuff. In season four, we pack up the sci-fi and get normal… for a second. Then it’s back to classic Solar chaos, mayhem in the Wall, and some all new Silvercops adventures!

The Valentine’s Day episode of Solar Opposites premieres on Hulu on February 5. Season five is expected to come out later this year.

Over his three decades as an NFL play-by-play man, Joe Buck has steadily found his voice and comfort in his own skin. But getting to that point was a process, as the son of legendary broadcaster Jack Buck, he wasn’t always sure of what tone he should take and how seriously he should take himself.

Now, he and Troy Aikman make up arguably the best broadcast booth in football for ESPN’s Monday Night Football, in large part because they strike the right balance of not taking themselves too seriously, but are still able to bring the right gravitas to a call in a big moment. It took Buck awhile to loosen up in the booth, and the all-time example of him being far too uptight is when he was paired with Cris Collinsworth for a Vikings-Packers playoff game in Green Bay and Randy Moss celebrated a touchdown by pretending to moon Packers fans.

Buck’s “that is a DISGUSTING act” call has lived on forever, and it’s the one he wishes he could take back. As he explained to Kevin Clark on This Is Football, that’s the easy answer for the thing he would do over in his career, citing how great Randy Moss has been to he and his wife and that he didn’t know the backstory of Packers fans mooning the Vikings team bus in the moment.

It’s one that Buck cringes at every time it plays back, as he can’t believe that came out of his mouth, but it certainly served as a bit of a learning experience for him. Once overly self-serious, Buck now happily pokes fun at himself and the banter between he and Aikman makes their broadcast among the best in the NFL, and that shift likely started after having to hear back his call of Moss’ celebration two decades ago.

Jay-Z continues to expand his extensive portfolio. Today (January 24), his latest collection for Moncler Genius, which arrives as a partnership between fashion house Moncler and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation brand launched through the official Moncler site and via select stores.

Uproxx cover star Chlöe Bailey did a recent interview with People Magazine, where she discussed her sister Halle’s pregnancy and how they tried to hide it until she was ready to share her baby with the world. As Chlöe put it, it was the “best kept secret ever.”

“We just ignore it,” she shared. “I would tell her, like, take social media off your phone, you know, I keep all her other secrets. So this was just another one in the books.”

Chlöe herself is also “on cloud nine” about the fact that she’s now an aunt. Halle and her boyfriend, DDG, welcomed their son, Halo, which they revealed earlier this month through an Instagram post.

Both the sisters are still keeping busy. Chlöe performed at the Urban One Honors: Best In Black event. Halle is set to host a Masterclass that fans can livestream, which will be part of the festivities for Grammy Week. More information about that can be found here.

Chlöe also recently teased during a TikTok livestream that the two could be reuniting to put out some new music. Both sisters worked on their solo projects, with Chlöe dropping In Pieces, and Halle appearing as the lead in the live-action Little Mermaid.

The Milwaukee Bucks made a rather shocking move on Tuesday, firing first-year head coach Adrian Griffin after a 30-13 start to the season. Now, it wasn’t quite as stunning as that record would indicate, because there were plenty of underlying issues the Bucks were overcoming off sheer talent, namely a defense that had no definable principles or strengths.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and Khris Middleton have led the Bucks to the East’s 2-seed at the midway point of the season, but of all the top contenders in the East, they seem like the team with the most obvious concerns come playoff time. There’s been a disconnect in the Bucks locker room since before camp, when Terry Stotts abruptly left the team due to disagreements with Griffin despite his strong relationship with Lillard. From there, the team had to demand a switch back to drop coverage with Brook Lopez, and Giannis recently called out the lack of a coherent scheme — and poor effort from the players.

Immediately after Griffin was fired, Doc Rivers’ name was floated as a top candidate for the job. Given the most successful coaches available in mid-January were Rivers, now doing TV work for ESPN, and Budenholzer, who the Bucks just fired, it wasn’t a surprise Rivers’ name would be attached.

On Tuesday night, CNN Sports broke the news that he’s on his way to Milwaukee.

While it seemed like they might have jumped the gun here, CNN stood by its reporting, even as other NBA reporters said things hadn’t progressed that far down the road yet. But on Wednesday morning, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, and Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the news that Rivers is, indeed, on his way to Milwaukee.

Rivers has not enjoyed much in the way of postseason success since winning a title in 2008 with the Celtics, and that will of course be brought up by everyone when citing the Bucks’ goal of winning it all. That said, he will install some defensive principles and has a strong system on that end, which will be an upgrade from what they’ve been doing even factoring in their personnel limitations. Offensively, we’ll have to wait and see, as Rivers’ teams recently have had a tendency to get bogged down in the playoffs, but Lillard and Antetokounmpo represent a uniquely dynamic pairing that might be able to overcome those problems.

Now, somewhat interestingly, ESPN has to figure out what they’ll do with their lead broadcast team, as Rivers was paired with Doris Burke and Mike Breen. J.J. Redick and Richard Jefferson are the lead analysts for ESPN’s No. 2 team, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Redick was elevated to that top group.
