Ron DeSantis‘ presidential run came crashing down to earth on Sunday as the Florida governor officially announced that he was ending his campaign ahead of the New Hampshire primary vote.
With his tail between his legs, DeSantis endorsed Donald Trump instead of fellow GOP candidate Nikki Haley. The former president routinely gave DeSantis nicknames like “Meatball Ron” and repeatedly insulted him on the campaign trail, but that wasn’t enough for DeSantis to resist pandering to a GOP base that continues to chain itself to Trump.
As a Florida resident and longtime critic of DeSantis, The View co-host Ana Navarro couldn’t help but revel in the Florida governor’s presidential chances going up in smoke. However, in the process, Navarro unfairly equated DeSantis with potatoes and quickly realized that wasn’t fair — to potatoes.
“I blame him entirely for his failure,” she said. “He’s the one that picked a campaign team that fleeced him, and was not good. He’s the one that chose this agenda. He’s the one that’s got the social skills of a root vegetable, and I apologize to potatoes!”
Jokes aside, Navarro also had some fiery words for DeSantis on the heels of his defeat. She blasted his campaign as “doomed from the start” thanks to DeSantis promising to transform the entire country into Florida, which nobody wants.
“Turns out, most Americans don’t care about waging manufactured culture wars against drag queens, they want to know how they’re going to feed their families,” Navarro said. “They want to know how they’re going to keep their family safe.”
In-N-Out is the type of fast food restaurant that inspires rabid fandom. For every weirdo out there who complains about the fries (they’re peeled and fried fresh on site, fight me if you ever think this is a bad thing) there is a person ready to admit that for the money, In-N-Out is the best tasting, best quality burger you can find in fast food. That’s why when a new restaurant opens absurdly long lines of cars snake throughout the drive-thru — especially when In-N-Out enters a new state.
It’s also why the restaurant has never closed a location once it’s been opened. Until now. For the first time ever, the restaurant chain will close a store — this one located in Oakland, California.
In-N-Out’s decision to close one of its restaurants is not because of poor business though, but rather unsafe conditions for both the employees and customers.
“We have made the decision to close our In-N-Out Burger located in Oakland, California, due to ongoing issues with crime,” Begins a statement issued by In-N-Out COO Denny Warnick. “Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our Customers and Associates are regularly victimized by car-break ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies. Our last day of business in Oakland will be Sunday, March 24th, 2024.”
BREAKING NEWS
In-N-Out has officially decided to close their first location ever in Oakland near the airport. This decision has been made due to the high crime activity and car break-ins. pic.twitter.com/zXfhMW3Jhu
The closure will be a huge loss for the Oakland area but given the situation, is for the best. This particular In-N-Out, which is located near the Oakland Airport at 8300 Oakport Street, has serviced the area for over 18 years and has remained both busy and profitable. While the closure is sad news, any employees affected will have the opportunity to transfer to a nearby restaurant or receive a severance package.
It’s unfortunate to see an In-N-Out closing, but it’s not like the restaurant will disappear from the Bay Area entirely — there are several restaurants nearby including one in Alameda (a mere 7 miles away), one in San Leandro, and across the bay in San Francisco and Daly City. Here is to hoping Oakland can find a new home for In-N-Out soon!
Georgia v. Jefferey Williams — also known as the “Young Thug RICO Trial” to rap fans and observers online — has been full of eyebrow-raising moments so far, from Thug’s defense lawyer’s questionable explanations for the rapper’s name and some of YSL’s slang to snippets of his music being played in court. Today’s proceedings continued that trend as even NBA star LeBron James was mentioned during witness testimony.
LeBron came up via a TikTok video introduced as evidence, which featured LeBron James going through his signature round of handshakes with his Lakers teammates in the tunnel before a game. A defense attorney showed the clip to alleged YSL gang leader Trontavious Stephens, then asked him if he recognized James and whether he could identify some of the hand gestures in it. Stephens, of course, answered in the affirmative — after all, James is one of the most famous people alive — then identified James’ nose-wiping gesture.
“Did you hear what Mr. James said as he wiped his nose?” the defense asked. The answer, “slime,” became the point of contention, as the defense attorney sought to make clear to the jury that if someone as prominent as LeBron James — who is not mobbed up or associated with a gang of any kind, unless the Lakers count — could use the term and wipe his nose as part of an elaborate handshake routine, then there’s little chance they could be solely associated with their use as gang signals, as the prosecution has suggested.
“Did you hear what Mr. James said as he wiped his nose?”@KingJames gets a prominent mention in the Young Thug / YSL RICO trial this morning in Atlanta. pic.twitter.com/kJ3BuK43qF
Stephens certainly cooperates, noting that the wiping of the nose gesture and the use of the term “slime” is not unique to the gang he and Thug are accused of leading. Of course, we won’t know how effective the arguments were on the jury until much, much later in the trial, which will continue for up to six months.

Sometimes the best new R&B can be hard to find, but there are plenty of great rhythm-and-blues tunes to get into if you have the time to sift through the hundreds of newly released songs every week. So that R&B heads can focus on listening to what they really love in its true form, we’ll be offering a digest of the best new R&B songs that fans of the genre should hear every Friday.
It’s been a little while since the last update of this weekly R&B column, and since then we’ve received plenty of music and news from the genre’s artists.
Here are some releases on the new music front that you should check out:
Blxst — “Heart Ain’t Empty”
For his first record of the year, Blxst emerges with the tender ballad “Heart Ain’t Easy.” With synths and an occasional piano making up the song’s production, Blxst delivers an introspective single while showing his sympathy to a close friend who is going through a tough time. Despite his inability to physically be there, Blxst assures them that their well-being remains at the forefront of his mind.
Destin Conrad — Submissive2
Destin Conrad has released a project every year since 2021, and he keeps the streak alive with a release early into the 2024 year. Conrad returns with Submissive2, a sequel to his 2023 effort Submissive. Through the nine songs and a feature from Alex Isley, Conrad continues the theme from Submissive which he said is “submitting to non-physical things, submitting to change, submitting to not knowing.”
Naomi Sharon — “Nothing Sweeter”
Months after releasing her celebrated debut album Obsidian, OVO Sound signee Naomi Sharon returns with “Nothing Sweeter.” It fuses elements of soul and contemporary R&B for a record that Sharon describes as “a vulnerable song that captures the fragility of falling in love.” She adds, “There’s an indescribable magic in the first kiss with the one you love. Regardless of what follows, that initial kiss remains unmatched and unforgettable.”
UMI — Talking To The Wind
Seattle-born and Los Angeles-based singer Umi kicks off her 20224 year with a new EP. Talking To The Wind presents four songs that capture the relief after a weight is removed from one’s shoulder. “Each of the songs were created at a time where I didn’t know exactly where I was going or what I was creating for,” UMI said about the project in a press release. The only thing I knew for certain was that in the moment of creating it all I was happy. It’s okay to create without a map and to live without one, too; to breathe out and let the wind of life take you where you’re always meant to be.”
Kyle Dion — If My Jeans Could Talk
A year and a half removed from his sophomore album Sassy, Kyle Dion begins the year with If My Jeans Could Talk, his new EP. With eight songs to its name, Dion unveils a body of work that he says is “more vulnerable, a bit more real, and a bit more carefree.” Dion added, “I feel this is a project to give to my fans to let them know that I am back and here is an appetizer before my 3rd album.”
Loony — “Too Attached”
This year will make three years since Toronto singer Loony released her last project Soft Thing, and thanks to Instagram posts from the singer, it seems like her official debut album will arrive this year. The latest step towards that comes with her new single, “Too Attached,” which recalls the moments she realizes that she’s deeply fallen in love with her partner.
Genia — “Like That”
A name in the R&B world to pay attention to this year is singer Genia who is preparing to release her 4am In The Ville EP in the early months of the year. The latest single from that is “Like That,” a feisty and fiery single that Genia uses to off her self-confidence and separate herself from the competition.
PxRRY & Shreta — “Only One”
Following a year highlighted by singles like “Didn’t You Say,” Connecticut singer PxRRY teams up with Shreta for their “Only One.” Together, the duo delivers a duet that shines a light on the perfect love and how two people can be the ideal companion for each other in order to create the relationship for a lifetime.
SAHXL — “TTUP”
Australian singer SAHXL continues his streak of singles with his latest offering, “TTUP.” Short for “Too Turnt Up,” SAHXL admits to being unable to commit to a relationship due to the way his stardom complicates things with his current partner. Though he’s not cheating on her, the way his stardom effects his relationship makes him feel like love isn’t for him at the moment.
Jordan Mackampa — “Blaccjack The Mac”
With Welcome Home, Kid! out on February 16, British-Congolese Jordan Mackampa delivers the album’s fourth single with “Blaccjack The Mac.” The new single is a euphoric, funk-infused, disco anthem dedicated to self-love. It’s a track for the moments when you’re feeling yourself and riding a high of self-confidence.
Honey Bxby — “Touchin’” Feat. Kaliii
Nearly a year after releasing the song, Honey Bxby updates “Touchin’” with a remix from Kaliii. The New Jersey native originally released the song on her 3 Words, 8 Letters. “‘Touchin” was one of those songs that I freestyled, and I was like what am I gonna write about?” Honey Bxby said about the song. “It was just a flow and I thought of telling a story about having a one-night stand. It was about being in the club, seeing a guy, a guy who wants to tap that ass, focused on one night of love.”

It’s been a few years since we last saw Mike Ehrmantraut handle a tough legal situation or push his granddaughter on the swings, and since then, he seemingly built a machine that alters space and reality. Who says retirement is for everyone?
Breaking Bad‘s Jonathan Banks, who portrayed Ehrmantraut, stars in Constellation, a new space thriller on AppleTV+. The first two episodes are directed by Breaking Bad and director and producer Michelle MacLaren, who already knows how to direct Banks’ disappointed face, so she has adequate experience.
Constellation stars Noomi Rapace as a young astronaut who returns from space after a traumatic mission only to discover that the world she left behind might be different than the one she returned to. The eight-part series also features Oppenheimer’s James D’Arcy, Julian Looman, Will Catlett and Barbara Sukow. Here is the official synopsis:
Constellation stars Noomi Rapace as Jo — an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space — only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The action-packed space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.
The first three episodes of Constellation will drop on Feb. 21st. Check out the trailer above.
If David Koepp retired after writing the screenplay for cult favorite Death Becomes Her, he would still be notable. But he went on to write or co-write The Paper, Mission: Impossible, Panic Room, Spider-Man, and, well, he also directed Johnny Depp in the dreadful Mortdecai. But don’t hold that against the guy who wrote Jurassic Park. He also penned the inferior-but-fun sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and now he’s reportedly returning to — dramatic pause — Jurassic Park [thunderous John Williams score begins playing].
Universal Studios is “deep into the development of an all-new Jurassic World movie and has David Koepp back at the keyboard,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The script is far enough along that a 2025 release date is possible. That would be three years since Jurassic World Dominion, the underwhelming conclusion to the trilogy that peaked with Jimmy Buffett’s cameo. No casting information is available, so we’ll just have to wait and see if they got Blue back.
Back in 2020, Koepp told Uproxx about what it’s like having written some of the most successful movies of all time. “Whenever something worked and people like it and go see it and say decent things about it,” he said, “I always think, ‘Well, that gives me another 18 months in Hollywood. So I better make the most of it.’ Because there are tons of people who have stories to tell, and you better keep telling good or interesting or daring ones or get out of the way so they can tell theirs.”

Every week, Billboard unveils the top 10 songs on the latest Hot 100 chart. The most recent rankings, for the chart dated January 27, are out now, so let’s run down who had this week’s biggest hits.
10. 21 Savage, Travis Scott, and Metro Boomin — “Née-nah”
21 Savage’s new album American Dream made a splash on the Hot 100 in its opening week, as the rapper has two songs in this week’s top 10: This Travis Scott and Metro Boomin collab, and another song coming up on this list.
9. SZA — “Snooze”
While SZA’s No.-2-peaking “Snooze” appears to be on its way out of the top 10, it remains at No. 1 on the Hot R&B Songs chart for a 25th week.
8. Teddy Swims — “Lose Control”
Last week was a major career milestone for Teddy Swims, as “Lose Control” became his first top-10 single. It debuted at No. 8 and hangs onto that same spot this week.
7. Doja Cat — “Paint The Town Red”
A former No. 1 for three total weeks, “Paint The Town Red” had a slight slide this week, down from No. 5 to No. 7.
Another former No. 1 (but for just one week), Bryan and Musgraves’ collab is hanging around the top 10 still, at No. 6.
5. 21 Savage — “Redrum”
And here’s the other new Savage song in the top 10. Notably, “Redrum” is Savage’s first top-10 single that features no other artist beside himself.
4. Tate McRae — “Greedy”
The current all-time high for McRae sits at No. 3, a spot it held last week, so it had a slight demotion in the latest frame.
3. Taylor Swift — “Cruel Summer”
The staying power of Swift’s 2019 single “Cruel Summer” has been phenomenal, as it’s been in the top 3 of that chart for what feels like forever at this point.
2. Jack Harlow — “Lovin On Me”
“Lovin On Me” previously spent three weeks at No. 1, but this week, it made way for a new champion.
1. Ariana Grande — “Yes, And?”
Grande has the first song released in 2024 to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100. “Yes, And?” is Grande’s eighth chart-topper of her career, and if you want to get super granular with the trivia, it’s the first No. 1 song with the word “yes” in its title.
This week’s #Hot100 top 10 (chart dated Jan. 27, 2024)
Donald Trump has been getting raked over the coals after he confused Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi during a campaign rally on Friday. Trump blamed Haley for turning down security ahead of the January 6 attack, which is pretty incredible given Haley wasn’t even in the Capitol that day or even a member of Congress.
The gaffe marked a significant change in the Republican primary by finally spurring Haley to call out the questionable working of Trump’s mind, which has been pretty dicey since his first run for office.
“He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario,” Haley told a campaign crowd in New Hampshire on Saturday. “The concern I have is — I’m not saying anything derogatory — but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this. We can’t.”
Naturally, Trump is already firing back, and of course, with an assist from Fox News. During a recent interview with Brett Baier, Trump was asked to respond to Haley’s criticism. The former president shot back by bragging about passing his most recent cognitive test.
“I aced it,” Trump boasted before arguing that, actually, he meant to “interchange” Haley with Pelosi. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
When I refer like, for instance, oftentimes I’ll say purposely about Obama and I interchange it with Biden because I believe Obama has a lot to do with what’s happening in destroying our country. And I’ll interchange and they’ll say, oh, he said, or I’ll imitate Biden walking into a wall or not being able to find his way, and the fake news will go out and they’ll say, oh, he actually had a hard time when I’m doing an imitation and everybody understands it.
Trump then went down a weird road by saying Haley couldn’t pass his “childhood test,” whatever that is.
“No, I don’t think she could pass the test that I passed. I passed my childhood test,” Trump said before mocking Haley for losing to Ron DeSantis in Iowa. “She’s just trying to get a little nasty because she came in third place. She wanted to come in second, and she wasn’t even that close, actually, to second. You know, I have to give that to Ron Desanctimonious.”
The year is 2024: Green Day and Godzilla are in the news.
Last week, the Bay Area punks (not Godzilla) released a new album, Saviors, that’s getting generally positive reviews. It’s not as good as Dookie (or either of their two best albums, Insomniac and Warning), but it’s much better than Father of All Motherfuckers, the most memory-holed album of the 2020s.
As for the King of the Monsters, Godzilla Minus One is an unexpected hit — it was only supposed to be in U.S. theaters for a week, maybe two, but that was nearly two months ago. The Takashi Yamazaki film has made over $100 million at the worldwide box office, including a $51 million domestic gross.
Godzilla Minus One rules (as does 2016’s even better Shin Godzilla) but you know what it could use? A tie-in soundtrack, like 1998’s Godzilla had. Roland Emmerich’s monster movie is a stinker (to quote Roger Ebert, “If you never get a clear look at the monster, you can’t see how shoddy it is” — Emmerich had it out for him), but it’s not at all bad. I believe it’s the only time The Simpsons legends Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer appeared in the same live-action film. So, uh, that’s something. Also, Godzilla: The Album features the Wallflowers covering David Bowie’s “Heroes,” for some reason; a new Rage Against the Machine track; Puff Daddy rapping for six minutes over Led Zeppelin’s towering “Kashmir”; and the crown jewel of the mishmash collection of alt rock, post-grunge, and Jamiroquai songs, “Brain Stew (The Godzilla Remix).”
What a beautiful collection of words: “Brain Stew (The Godzilla Remix)” (which is unfortunately not on Spotify). You’ve got “Brain Stew” by pop-punk titans Green Day, one of the first songs every wannabe rocker learns to play on guitar, plus actual titan Godzilla. Put them together, and you have Godzilla screeching over one of Green Day’s crunchiest riffs. It’s dumb, but it rules.
How did the collaboration come together? I wish I had an answer, but after doing some research, I’m stumped. Godzilla: The Album (Epic Records) and Green Day (Reprise Records) didn’t share a label, and I can’t find any interviews where singer Billie Joe Armstrong talks about his love of the big lizard. Maybe Tré Cool was the real fan? The most obvious answer is probably the correct one: Green Day were asked (or forced) to put one of their songs on a tie-album for a hit movie, which was the style at the time, and they said yes. The Godzilla bellows — and rap-rock production flourishes — are a bonus.
Went .$95 closeout CD hunting at Rasputin Records in the Bay Area and found some total gems.
Like Godzilla: The Album, inarguably THE best of many compilation albums to feature an era-defining Puff Daddy/Led Zeppelin crossover mashup as its lead single. pic.twitter.com/0InTGSbMgA
Whatever the case, it worked: the week Godzilla: The Album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, it was one of four soundtracks in the top 10, along with City of Angels (thanks largely to the Goo Goo Dolls towering ballad “Iris”), Songs from Ally McBeal, and Titanic. “Brain Stew (The Godzilla Remix)” wasn’t the big hit on the album (Puff Daddy’s “Come with Me” went to #4), but it’s arguably the track that’s most fondly remembered today. To quote a rare good YouTube comment: “This was the first Green Day song that got me hooked. Green Day will always have a special place in my heart. They helped me out when my depression/anxiety got worse, and their sings held on to me.”
Another person wrote, “I’m so glad I looked this up, I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why my brain kept inserting dinosaur roars into the song. It kept slipping my mind but today the original played on the radio and I asked my mother if they ever did a release for Jurassic park. She was like no you dummy its Godzilla. Makes sense because I was just young enough to remember the song but not the movie apparently.”
Honestly, the mother was right to call her daughter a dummy.
They don’t make soundtracks like Godzilla: The Album anymore. To be clear, I’m not waxing nostalgic for clunky-worded tie-in albums like Batman & Robin: Music from and Inspired by the “Batman & Robin” Motion Picture (OK, I am a little). They literally don’t make supremely stupid (complimentary) albums like Godzilla: The Album, or songs like “Brain Stew (The Godzilla Remix),” in 2024. It’s a time capsule from a long-ago era (the 1990s, which were — checks notes — 80 years ago). But maybe it’s time to bring them back.
