There’s emo. Then there is “Problems” musician Ekkstacy. As one of punk’s freshest faces, Ekkstacy quickly recruited a cult following. With his self-titled album out today (January 19), the full scope of his musical prowess is out for display. Across the body of work, Ekkstacy keeps the features limited to just two acts.

On “Alright,” Ekkstacy joins forces with The Kid Laroi for what is sure to be an overthinker’s anthem. The track, co-produced by ​Apob and Manget$u, gives both artists the floor to indulge in a full-on session of self-loathing.

“I don’t, don’t know where I am / Don’t know where I’ve been / And I can’t stand the place that I’m in / I’m back here again / I guess it’s alright, these things happen / And I don’t care,” sings Ekkstacy.

While Ekkstacy keeps the root of his depression secret, The Kid Laroi lays it all out in his verse. “I was on my way home when I got your message / It’s a page long, and you’re obsessing / About this other girl that you done heard I done met / But you’re the one that broke it off, I don’t know why you’re upset / You said that if there was a chance for us, it’s never again / Oh, well, I guess it was meant to end,” sings Laroi.

This week saw the premiere of True Detective: Night Country, which is already racking up rave reviews thanks to a lead performance from Jodie Foster as she and Kali Reis solve a gruesome murder in Alaska.

Night Country is the fourth season of the HBO detective show that first burst onto the scene with the dynamite pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The anthology series has unveiled a new mystery and a new pair of detectives with each installment, and Night Country is being regarded as the best entry since season one. However, this time around, the show is doing things a bit differently starting with the episode count.

Unlike previous entries, Night Country will only have six episodes. It’s also the first season to not feature the involvement of series creator Nic Pizzolatto. Instead, Issa Lopez has taken the reins and infused True Detective with a new energy that’s already going over well with viewers and critics.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

Kristen Stewart is having a blast at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Not only is she on hand for the premieres of two movies starring Kristen Stewart, but she has received the Visionary Award. She accepted this honor (from frequent co-star Jesse Eisenberg) while exclaiming, “Sundance is the f*cking sh*t!” Of course, there’s tons of chatter about a particular Stewart festival movie, A24 and Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding, in which Stewart falls in love with a bodybuilder (portrayed by Katy O’Brian, with whom Stewart shares “shocking” sex scenes). She also co-stars alongside Steven Yeun in Love Me, but Stewart has another reason to be gung-ho for Sundance this year, too.

The Spencer star is ready to fully bring her vision to the world (keeping herself honest about that award, no doubt) with a directorial debut film. She plans to adapt The Chronology Of Water (the bestselling 2011 memoir of Lidia Yuknavitch) with Imogen Poots as the lead with Ridley Scott producing, but funding has eluded the project so far. Here’s what Stewart told Variety when quizzed about the project:

“Well that’s why we’re here!” Stewart said when asked if her phone has started ringing with financing for the movie. “I wish I had more to say on that. I’m going to make that f*cking movie!”

Earlier this month, Stewart also faux-threatened to take drastic measures to get those cameras rolling:

“I’m going to make this movie before I ever work for someone else,” she says, before breaking into nervous laughter. “Yeah, I will quit the f*cking business. I won’t make a-f*cking-nother movie until I make this movie. I will tell you that, for sure. I think that will get things going.”

And here we are, so do not be surprised to see Stewart telling the world she will live at Sundance until she gets those dollars tied down. She also declared of the Visionary Award, “As an actor, you’re not often glorified for your vision. You fit into other people’s visions and service their efforts and their endeavors and the messages they want to get across.” Let her direct!

Dolly Parton’s first go at a rock album, Rockstar, was already pretty long, clocking in at 30 tracks. Now, in celebration of her birthday today (January 19), Parton has released a deluxe edition that adds nine more songs.

Five of the bonus tracks appeared on digital and limited edition versions of the album, while the other four are previously unheard.

In a message announcing the release, Parton wrote, “Hey fans and friends, It’s my Birthday so I’m going to give you a present! I’m releasing four never released songs for my birthday, to go with the Rockstar album, and a few others that you may have heard before that were not on the album. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you all have a happy birthday for me! LOL. Thanks for everything, Dolly.”

If there’s one thing Latto is going to do, it’s to pay homage to Atlanta. Throughout her music, the Clayco native never misses a chance to big up the city that made her a household name. Latto’s latest guest appearance on Anycia’s new song “Back Outside” is just the latest of many dirty South collaborations to come.

The record, co-produced by JetsonMade, brings rap fans into the gritty sound of the city’s south end. “I’m a southside b*tch to the grave / I’m a real ass b*tch to the tomb / Million dollar convos on Zoom, get wet I don’t gotta use lube / You a friendly-ass b*tch, I’m rude / Popped out with a brand-new dude / Popped out with a brand-new team / Walked in, smell good, I’m tea,” raps Anycia.

Latto echos that same matter-of-fact energy across her verse, rapping, “I’m a Southside b*tch to the grave / I’m a Southside b*tch to the hearse / Hop out the G-Wag, hop out the vert / M’s off brand deals, M’s off merch / Got a b*tch driveway looking like Hertz.”

When the musical link-up was teased in 2023, users online pushed back against it, demanding Latto work with “more established artists.” But she quickly shut that down, pouring love into Anycia, who has been building up a solid discography for herself.

The Yorgos Lanthimos film stars the actress as Bella Baxter, a victim of suicide who is brought back to life by a mad scientist, played by Willem Dafoe. Bella is an adult with the brain of an unborn child, and as her mind develops, so, too, does her interest in sex.

During a recent interview with BBC Radio 4 host Samira Ahmed (via CNN), Stone was asked about the “quite graphic” sex scenes in Poor Things.

“So much of this was about being true to Bella’s experience,” she replied. “[Sex] is obviously a huge part of her experience and her growth, as it is, I think, for most people in life. But I see it as just one aspect of many to her – her discovery of food or philosophy, travel, and dance. Sex is another aspect.”

Stone called it “extremely important” for Bella to be “completely free and without shame about her body. She doesn’t know to be embarrassed by these things or to cover things up or not dive into the full experience when it comes to anything. So for the camera to sort of shy away from that, or to say like, ‘OK, well, we’ll just cut all of this out because our society functions in a particular way,’ it felt like a lack of being honest about who Bella is.”

She added, “I’m not a person that just wants to be naked all the time, but I am someone who wants to honor the character as fully as I possibly can.”

Poor Things is expected to be nominated in numerous categories at the 2024 Oscars. The nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23.

The actor and director duo have been working together since Fruitvale Station before taking on Creed, and of course, Black Panther. While this new movie is not a Marvel production, Coogler is reportedly using the studio’s infamous protocols for secrecy.

The project is being described as a “secret genre movie” that’s written by Coogler, and the first spec script under his production company Proximity Media. Jordan is attached to star in the film that’s reportedly based on an “original idea” from Coogler that’s being heavily protected. Studio executives and buyers have to physically check in at WME offices in Beverly Hills if they want to even look at the script.

Reneé Rapp has been crushing it over the past year. Her debut album, Snow Angel, came out last summer and it was a strong musical premiere. She also stars in the new Mean Girls movie and even had a song with Megan Thee Stallion on the soundtrack, “Not My Fault.” Now, she’s doing something that ultimately only a few entertainers have had the pleasure of doing: This weekend, she’ll be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

Jacob Elordi is hosting the episode, so he, Rapp, and SNL cast member Bowen Yang filmed a promo video.

After Elordi introduces himself, Yang says, “Reneé, you were so right: He is so baby girl.” Rapp replies, “I know, that’s what I said. He is so baby girl.” Elordi asks, “Me? I’m a baby girl? So what’s Reneé?” Rapp responded, “Oh, I’m mother,” a nickname that Rapp, and plenty of other beloved female musicians, has been given by fans. Yang closed out the bit by proudly exclaiming, “And I’m big, wrinkly son!”

Meanwhile, Rapp’s current promo cycle has produced a ton of fun moments, whether she’s revealing her adoration of Mark Cuban on The Late Show or declaring Megan has the “best ass I’ve ever seen in my life.”
