Much has been made about the lack of studio movies that get released in theaters anymore. So you have to treasure the ones that do, like the delightful One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, and the upcoming Good Fortune, with Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, Sandra Oh, and, well, Keke Palmer. She’s the charismatic queen of theatrical comedy!
Speaking of, one of Palmer’s upcoming projects is starring in an adaptation of The ‘Burbs, Joe Dante’s 1989 dark-comedy film with Tom Hanks. Will you be watching the Peacock series? The answer better not be “nope.”
Here’s everything we know about The ‘Burbs.
Plot
In the original horror-tinged comedy from Gremlins genius Joe Dante), Tom Hanks plays a suburbanite who begins to suspect his new neighbors of… MURDER. The Peacock adaptation tweaks the premise by following a couple, seemingly played by Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall, who move into the husband’s childhood home. As per the logline, “What starts as a typical suburban life quickly unravels as new neighbors arrive with explosive secrets.”
Peacock’s The ‘Burbs (as I’ll call it from now on to avoid confusion) is being written by Celeste Hughley, while Seth MacFarlane and Brian Grazer are attached as executive producers. Dante does not appear to be involved, but Dana Olsen, who wrote the original screenplay, is a co-executive producer.
In a 35th anniversary retrospective with Paste about The ‘Burbs, Dante discussed the film underperforming at the box office before becoming a cult classic. “It does seem to have quite a following, and it was apparent even at the time,” he said. “I’d go to the dentist and they’d say ‘Oh, you made The ‘Burbs? I love that picture!’ But in the meantime, you’re sort of feeling that you’re in movie jail because the reviews are so bad.”
As for MacFarlane, besides his admittedly light involvement with Family Guy and American Dad, he’s also producing another reimagining of a classic comedy: Naked Gun.
Cast
Besides Tom Hanks, The ‘Burbs also starred Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson, and Gale Gordon, of Lucy: A Tribute fame. The cast of Peacock’s The ‘Burbs includes Keke Palmer, Jack Whitehall, Julia Duffy, the always-hilarious Paula Pell, Kapil Talwalkar, and Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson from What We Do in the Shadows), who, come to think of it, would make a good Mr. Mooney in the inevitable I Love Lucy reboot.
Release Date
Stay tuned for a premiere date.
Trailer
There’s no footage from Peacock’s The Burbs yet, but you can watch the trailer for The Burbs: the movie below.
Every single week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.
10. Conclave – Focus Features film streaming on Peacock
Have you ever dreamed of spying on how the papal conclave selects a new pope? Well, you’re not alone. Searches for the Best Picture nominee spiked following Pope Francis’ death, and viewers are drinking in the Ralph Fiennes-starring film, which revolves around a dramatized version of the infighting between the Catholic Church’s leaders as they locked themselves in the Vatican for the process. The film took home the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, but let’s be honest, it’s a soap-opera of a movie, too.
9. Companion – New Line Cinema film streaming on Max
The Final Girl has taken a turn in this dark comedy that sees a “companion” robot hack into her own programming, and Sophie Thatcher really goes for it while giving Jack Quaid much more than he bargained for in this twisted romance story. That much has been predictable from the movie’s promotional tour, but this film still delivers enough curveballs to make the ride worth taking. Both stars are on fire with Thatcher recently surviving the third Yellowjackets season and starring opposite the dastardly Hugh Grant in Heretic. Quaid, meanwhile, starred in Novocaine and will soon assist buddy-comedy duo John Cena and Idris Elba in Heads Of State.
8. G20 – Amazon MGM Studios movie streaming on Prime Video
Antony Starr isn’t simply Homelander, guys. He previously starred in the excellent Banshee, and currently within his Amazon stomping grounds, he’s getting his tush kicked by Viola Davis. She portrays the U.S. president who is targeted at the G20 summit, and you can guess that she doesn’t exactly need rescuing by security. For his part, Starr was thrilled to be defeated, as he revealed on Instagram: “The signs were there all along…. I was gonna get my ass whupped. I’m glad it was you.” Homie goes down.
Apple TV+ was so confident in this series that they renewed for a second season before debut. That’s generally a move that doesn’t go wrong, and it doesn’t hurt that Jon Hamm departed the Landman set to portray a contemporary Don Draper type who starts robbing his wealthy neighbors after his hedge-funder lifestyle and marriage both crumbled. Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn co-star, and James Marsden will bring his affable ways to the show’s future.
The Testaments sequel series is currently in the works (also with Bruce Miller as showrunner) to extend Margaret Atwood’s tales of Gilead, but before that happens, we can consider why, exactly, anybody would choose to come back from Canada after escaping the show’s hellscape. Also, what the hell is Serena Joy plotting, if anything at all? Elisabeth Moss previously hinted that the relationship between June and Selena would be a large part of this season, and ideally, both Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia will receive massive comeuppance before all is said and done.
Get ready to get awkward again with Nathan Fielder. The overlord troll is back for a second season of helping people “rehearse” for significant moments within his own simulations. In doing so, he began this year’s masterful display of discomfort by devoting resources “toward an issue that affects us all,” according to Max’s spoiler-free description. This week, Fielder “draws from his past,” and the less you know going into these episodes, the better.
Tom Hardy’s fixer, Harry, sat in a potentially difficult place last week as one of only a few people who knew where the bodies were buried, but that’s also inherently the life of a fixer. Pierce Brosnan’s mob head knows this much as well, and Guy Ritchie’s series is currently one of the most popular shows on Paramount. It’s safe to say that a second season will soon be in the works, and Hardy has already been out there, teasing up a storm about potential international destinations to be tackled by Guy Ritchie. MobLand co-stars Helen Mirren, who has recently been everywhere including Taylor Sheridan’s universe, and Paddy Considine, who damn well should be everywhere, too.
Charlie Brooker’s satirical anthology series, which frequently highlights a technological hellscape not too far off base from reality, will soon return with what Brooker promises is “back to basics in many ways. They’re all sci-fi stories, but there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way.” In doing so, you can expect a followup to the notorious “USS Callister” episode, but don’t expect to see Jesse Plemons because, well, you know.
Will Tom Hardy be in the Peaky Blinders movie? Look at his face and realize that this is not an important question right now. Instead, this is the moment where The Raid franchise director Gareth Evans’ long-gestating action movie has finally arrived. Hardy is in the driver’s seat as a jaded detective who is tangling with underworld baddies, including Timothy Olyphant, after a drug deal gone wrong. On the way toward rescuing an entire city, Hardy will pick up a flamethrower. Will he use the Venom voice while doing so? We’ll never tell.
Well, Pedro Pascal’s Joel is down for the saddest count, which is fine because the dude also needs to film about 10 other projects, including Avengers: Doomsday, and Bella Ramsey will keep carrying the torch as Ellie. Meanwhile, Pascal has been doing his best to keep any toxic fans from piling onto Kaitlyn Dever (who portrays Abby), but he might have broken a few hearts as well with a post-mortem shoutout on Instagram while writing, “Thank you, scene partner. You little miracle.” And also, showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed, “This is not the last we will see of Joel.” So there.
Earlier this month, Travis promised a new project from his Cactus Jack crew in addition to a solo project this year. “Right now, I’m super into producing, making the beats again, and getting the sound back,” he told Complex. “I’m making beats and music for other people, and even for myself… I’m excited for Jackboys, and my new album, and Sheck [Wes]’s new album.”
Today, we got our first update on the Jackboys album: It’s made Travis sick. Well, maybe not literally. But the album is presumably finished, as the Houston native noted on Twitter, “Jackboys album brazy. I just threw up. Certified.”
It’s impressive that he’s had time to finish up one project, let alone multiple. In recent months, a lot of his time seems to have been dedicated to a much different kind of feud than the one his past collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Drake spent the last year engaged in. He’s been embroiled in a wrestling ring back-and-forth with WWE star Cody Rhodes, helping The Rock and John Cena give The American Nightmare bad dreams of his own.
The last album from the collective Cactus Jack posse, Jackboys, was released December 27, 2019, and carries the distinction of being the first No. 1 album of 2020.
With a new album on the way, Lana Del Rey gave fans at Stagecoach Festival a preview of what she has in store during her headlining set on Friday night, performing three songs from the upcoming project. According to Rolling Stone, the three songs were called “Husband Of Mine,” “Quiet In The South,” and “57.5.”
“57.5” drew particular attention from concertgoers and observers online for a line in which she shades country star Morgan Wallen — after confessing she kissed him on an off-roading date. “I kissed Morgan Wallen / I guess kissing me kind of went to his head / If you want my secret to success / I suggest don’t go ATVing with him when you’re out west.”
Of course, she noted to the crowd that this was before she met and married her current husband, Jeremy Dufrene, and said it was “the last time I’m ever going to say this line.”
“57.5,” and the other songs Lana performed on Friday, are expected to appear on the singer’s tenth studio album, The Right Person Will Stay. The album has a release date of May 21, and features production from Jack Antonoff, Drew Erickson, and Luke Roberts. As suggested by her second appearance at Stagecoach in as many years, it’ll feature heavy flavor from Americana — which she says isn’t that much of a departure for her.
You can check out video of the “57.5” performance here.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s poker-chess face performed so righteously in The Queen’s Gambit that second-season cravings are only natural. Still, there has been no hint from Netflix or anybody involved that more could happen, and the existing season is perfect as-is while still sitting on streaming service’s All-Time Top 10 TV Shows list. It’s time to let that dream go, y’all.
The good news, however, is that The Queen’s Gambit writer/director Scott Frank has another original TV series coming to Netflix. Let’s move the game pieces around and determine what to expect from Dept. Q
Plot
Scott Frank’s limited-series prowess is strong, both with The Queen’s Gambit and Godless, so odds are strong that Dept. Q will take the same route. That label hasn’t been made official yet, so for now, this new series has been announced for an initial nine-episode season based upon Danish novelist Jussi Adler-Olsen’s same-named books.
Dept. Q is also officially labelled as a thriller series, and although this will not be as high-octane as The Night Agent, certain similarities are impossible to ignore. That includes a protagonist who is relegated to a basement department, and you know that isn’t going to last. Matthew Goode will portray incorrigible top-cop, Carl, who doesn’t get along so well with colleagues, and following an officer-involved shooting that severely injured his partner, Carol is reassigned to (for PR reasons and probably because it’s convenient to have the abrasive colleague stored elsewhere) concentrate on cold cases.
A guilt-ridden Carl will embrace f*cking off at first but soon grow bored and build his own group of unofficial colleagues, both from “misfits and mavericks” within the police team, according to Variety, but also from the streets (via Netflix’s synopsis) after Carl does get back out there on cold cases.
In the process, Carl will clash with a rising prosecutor and find support from an assistant (and former Syrian police force member) who has more skills than previously imagined. Additionally, Carl’s therapist will have a hell of a time sorting through his trauma, but look for them to “develop a deeper connection across the series.” Hmm. Here’s more from the aforementioned synopsis:
[D]epartment [Q] is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove. So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best – rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer.
Cast
Matthew Goode stars alongside Kelly Macdonald, Leah Byrne, Chloe Pirrie, and Alexej Manvelov.
Release Date
Dept. Q streams all nine episodes on May 29.
Trailer
Netflix hasn’t released a Dept. Q trailer yet, but you could always revisit The Queen’s Gambit while you wait.
Is it the fun premise? The guest stars? Natasha Lyonne‘s voice?
More likely, it’s a combination of all three things — as well as the behind-the-scenes work of creator and director Rian Johnson and the talented writing staff — that made Poker Face one of the best television shows of 2023.
Thankfully, the Peacock series will be back for more mysteries soon. And that’s the truth.
Created by Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery), Poker Face stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cox, a former casino employee who has an ability to determine when someone is lying — a skill that she uses to solve various murders across the country.
Following the events of the season 1 finale, in which Charlie pisses off a powerful crime syndicate, she’s back on the road in season 2. “We’ve taken her journey to the next level one murder mystery at a time,” Johnson and Lyonne teased in a co-statement. “From minor league baseball to big box retail, from funeral homes to alligator farms, and even a grade school talent show, Charlie navigates her crime solving existential road-trip with deadpan wit, human empathy, and her signature uncanny lie-detecting ability.”
They continued:
To bring Season 2 to life, we pulled visual inspiration from American ’70s cinema, all the stuff we love like Robert Altman, Bob Rafelson, Peter Bogdanovich. But the backbone of this show is TV – the kind of TV we grew up watching, episodic case of the week gems like Columbo and The Rockford Files and Quantum Leap. Each episode is a mini movie, existing in its own world with a unique tone and vibe, featuring an eccentric lot of characters played by a truly gonzo parade of guest stars.
Seriously, the list of guest stars is insane (check it out below).
Lyonne believes that Poker Face is both a character study about a woman on the run and “a fun hangout show,” she told Parade. “Poker Face is so beautiful because it’s an adult concept of: we lose interest in ourselves and gain interest in our fellows. In a way, she’s sort of on the case of anybody but herself.”
The Best New Hip-Hop This Week column returns after a very crowded April 18 release week that included standout releases from Mozzy, Westside Gunn, and Wiz Khalifa; apologies if you came around looking for a few words from yours truly, but I was on a long-overdue vacation.
But it’s back to regularly scheduled programming this week, with Megan Thee Stallion dropping her new single “Whenever“:
Young Thug regaining his stride with “Money On Money” featuring Future:
Here is the best of hip-hop this week ending April 25, 2025.
Albums/EPs/Mixtapes
Bbymutha — Left4dead: The Triplets
Bbymutha
The Chattanooga fixture has been as consistent as clockwork with her recent discography, dropping her latest collection of 13 tracks right on time. Brash, trash-talking trap sound should be welcome to fans of her Tennessee country folk like Three 6 Mafia, with swaggering lyrics focused on Brit’s unwavering self-esteem.
Bishop Nehru — Trapbap
Bishop Nehru
Contrary to what its title might lead you to expect, the New York native’s latest calls to mind the loopy digital soul of Detroit’s finest, J Dilla, than either of the subgenres suggested. Fortunately, he sounds like he’s having a blast rhyming over the chunky, clunky, off-kilter kicks and distorted soul samples.
Ray Vaughn — The Good The Bad The Dollar Menu
Ray Vaughn
Top Dawg’s long been a bastion of promising talent; after Doechii arrived with a bang last year, Ray Vaughn offers another captivating debut from the label’s post-Kendrick roster. Dollar Menu details Vaughn’s roughshod Long Beach upbringing with scarred introspection, unfettered bravado, and a clear-eyed artistic vision that portends great things for Ray’s future.
Tobi Lou — Baggy Weather
Tobi Lou
The Chi-town sunbeam returns with the follow-up to 2023’s Perish Blue in the form of the official version of that year’s EP, Baggy Weather (Mini Version). Showcasing another cool side effect of being independent, Tobi fleshes out the ideas from that year’s project with even more musicality, thoughtful expansions of those sketches with new lyrics, and of course, all-new tracks.
Wu-Tang & Mathematics — Black Samson The Bastard Swordsman
Wu-Tang
Math produces the latest project featuring the full Clan, a full-throated homage to the group’s best works (think 36 Chambers or “Triumph”). Despite the members’ old-school sensibilities, and the throwback leanings of Mathematics’ beat making, it never sounds crusty or staid — and besides, who doesn’t love a family reunion? Considering everything this group’s been through, it’s cool just to see them still willing to team up to put on a good, ol’ rap showcase.
Singles/Videos
Belly Gang Kushington — “U Need 2 Leave”
With representation from LVRN and a new project, The Streets Is Yours, out today, this Atlanta upstart is making a strong a case for being the hottest new rap voice from the city. Here’s the release day focus track, which presents a microcosm of his impactful rap style and subtly wicked sense of humor.
Logic — “It’s A Fee”
Anyone out there who thought Logic was joking about making “Playboi Carti-style” music is going to be disappointed to learn that he was not — even worse, he’s actually kind of good at it. The boom-bap hardliners may never recover.
Rich Brian — “Butterfly”
An anti-crush anthem, Rich Brian’s latest single features a frenetic beat that doesn’t sound like anything else out right now. The kid’s an innovator, for sure.
Watch out, Taylor Sheridan. Guy Ritchie and his latest crop of gangsters are moving in on the Paramount Plus screening crown, which debuted as the streaming service’s largest premiere day. MobLand‘s first season (and more has been heavily suggested) hasn’t quite reached the halfway point yet, and the audience is still growing week over week.
In other words, you are not alone if you are enjoying the open content faucet of hard-hitting Hardy (Havoc also debuts on Netflix this weekend), but there are necessary details for watching what happens next.
When Will MobLand Season 1 Episode 5 Come Out?
April 27. The fifth episode, entitled “Funeral for a Friend,” is being teased with this description: “Kevin and Harry assess scenarios in a search for insurance and an exit strategy; looking for a way back in, Brendan approaches Seraphina; left to their own devices, Bella and Jan commiserate; Richie makes a proposal; Maeve strikes.”
In MobLand, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren are transfixing as mob family heads with Hardy as fixer Harry Da Souza. And even with his current onscreen appearances flying, there’s always the temptation to ask whether the latter also has the Peaky Blinders movie in his future.
Well, Hardy knows that people want the answer to that question, and this week, The Bikeriders star made this face in response. Yikes. We should probably simply focus on Havoc and MobLand right now, thank you very much.
“I do music to open myself and those I love up to opportunities we wouldn’t otherwise have.”
SAILORR shared these words back with the release of her “Down Bad” single earlier this month. The Jacksonville, Florida native rose to R&B fame in what seemed like a matter of months, but in reality, as is the case most of the time, it was the result of a lifelong pursuit of her dreams. It began with her late-2024 record “Pookie’s Requiem,” a rugged and emotionally sprawling record — eventually remixed by Summer Walker — that captures the struggles of breaking free from bad habits. Inspired by Requiem For A Dream, SAILORR said, “I was like, ‘Damn, I really identify with this’ — just struggling with addiction, whether that be with sex, love, substances, whatever.” She added that the song was a “direct reflection of what I was struggling with at the time.”
The battles of life are often at center for SAILORR’s music. She fights through uncertainties and fears in love on “Cut Up” and wallows in the constant presence of an unfulfilling love on “Down Bad” and “W1LL U L13?” For her latest effort, “Sincerity,” SAILORR crafts a cinematic ballad that finds the silver lining in struggle. The young singer has paid the price amid the pursuit of her dreams, as well as the price of achieving them, but somewhere in that is resolve and TK that you did exactly what you said you would.
The new record is the latest single from her newly-announced debut album From Florida’s Finest. The 14-track effort is set to arrive on May 9 and make for a proper introduction for the Jacksonville singer’s promising career. “From Florida’s Finest highlights the importance of creativity and femininity while growing up with traditionally conservative expectations,” SAILORR said about the album. “It’s girlhood at its best.”
With From Florida’s Finest on the way and “Sincerity” out now, we placed SAILORR under the Uproxx Music 20 spotlight to learn more about her influences, inspirations, and aspirations. Scroll down to discover the best of SAILORR.
Learning the choreo to random music videos on MTV with my cousins at every family function.
Who or what inspired you to take music seriously?
There was this one lady in particular that came into my job when I was bartending and she made me feel really small and insignificant because of how rude she was. That particular shift made me vow to keep making music until I never needed a paycheck from that job again.
Do you know how to play an instrument? If so, which one? If not, which instrument do you want to learn how to play?
Not well enough to say I play bass but yes bass. I want to learn how to play the theramin. Or a harp. Something with undeniable aura with insane optics so people think I’m cool.
You get 24 hours to yourself to do anything you want, with unlimited resources: What are you doing? And spare no details!
Invent a machine that can upload knowledge and skills into my brain. Then I would upload the information it takes to master every skill I would ever want to learn into my body and enjoy that for awhile until I get over my own individualism and decide to change the world for the better, but first I’d definitely start with something selfishly simple like perfecting tamagoyaki.
What is the best song you’ve ever made?
“W1LL U L13?” and out of the ones I have yet to drop, maybe “GRRL’S GRRL.”
What’s a feature you need to secure before you die?
If you could appear in a future season of a current TV show, which one would it be and why?
The Studio because of how clever the writing and cinematography is.
Which celebrity do you admire or respect for their personality and why?
Doechii is unapologetically herself and helps so many people feel seen. I love her humor and it definitely shines into her songwriting as well.
Share your opinion on something no one could ever change your mind about.
Blunt, breakfast, then brush your teeth in that order. No steps skipped and if you put the first two steps after the third, you must brush again.
What is the best song you’ve ever heard in your life and what do you love about it?
“Past Life” by Tame Impala. I love that it makes me float and feel transcendent. I think the clipping on the mix scratches my brain in the best way possible.
What’s your favorite city in the world to perform, and what’s a city you’re excited to perform in for the first time?
I’ve only ever performed in LA, but I’m excited to eventually play my hometown for the first time since I left.
You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location where it would be held.
Fousheé, Yves Tumor, Jordan Ward, Clairo, and Veeze. I’m not sure where but it needs to be near a body of water. If I could shut down an island (not in a Fyre Festival kinda way) that would be the ideal location because I would need to hear all this music with a bunch of palm trees rustling around me.
What would you be doing now if it weren’t for music?
Idk probably stuck in the fetal position somewhere in a dark corner of Florida. Maybe I would try my hand at sports betting and gamble my savings away. Maybe I’d wear a starchy, crispy suit in some real estate office. Maybe I’d be an anesthesiologist and get high off my own supply everyday at the hospital I work at. Thank God I have music.
If you could see five years into the future or go five years into the past, which one would you pick and why?
I feel weird about time travel because I feel like the butterfly effect is real but if I had to I would just go 5 years in the past to remind my younger self to have grace for herself and to stay consistent.
What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?
Remember to stretch everyday and always block their number after you stop talking.
It’s 2050. The world hasn’t ended, and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?
I hope I’m remembered for my writing and my versatility. I hope I’m remembered for having a vault of music and a face card that never declines.
From Florida’s Finest is out 5/9 via Bu Vision/10K Projects. Find out more information here.
Flo Milli confirmed her pregnancy in November after previously denying online rumors, and today, she confirmed her son’s birth with a charming photo of the newborn direct from the hospital on Instagram. In the caption, she wrote, “Yall bett not play bout yall internet nephew.”
In addition to revealing her baby’s birth today, Flo also shared a new single, “Gripper,” featuring T-Pain. It’s the Alamabama rapper’s first new single of the year, and most recent solo song since dropping the video for “Wet Dreams” back in September. It remains to be seen how any potential album rollout could be affected by the birth of Flo Milli’s baby, but she’s now just one of a slew of stars who’ve continued their careers after giving birth, including: Cardi B, Jhene Aiko, Monaleo, and Halle Bailey.
Flo’s a little over a year removed from the release of her second studio album, Fine Ho, Stay, fueled by the hit single, “Never Lose Me.” Since then, she dropped a remix featuring Cardi B, then appeared on a remix of Latto’s hit “Sunday Service” with Megan Thee Stallion. Flo and Meg teamed up again on Meg’single “Roc Steady.” With her immediate future spoken for, though, she’s got plenty of time to prepare for the epic comeback all of her prior work deserves.
