Jeff Teague Had An Incredible Explanation For The Time He Shoved LeBron Into The Crowd: ‘I’m A Sore Loser’

Draymond Green throwing Rudy Gobert in a sleeper hold and earning a 5-game suspension for it became the talking point around the NBA, as players, fans, and even SNL all had something to say about what did and didn’t happen in the scuffle between the Warriors and Wolves.

The player perspective on those types of things is always the most interesting to me, particularly because there’s not really a unified belief among current and former players about how those types of fights should go, and we saw that across the various player podcasts this week. Patrick Beverley got mad about Karl-Anthony Towns not jumping in and choking Draymond back, while Paul George noted that star players have to toe a certain line because they can’t risk getting ejected or suspended and costing their team a game in that situation.

On Jeff Teague’s Club 520 Podcast, his co-host Bishop had a different question he wanted an answer for: Why are NBA players like this? When Teague asked who he was talking about he brought up Jeff shoving LeBron James into the stands at the end of a Hawks-Cavs playoff game back in 2016, which led to a very funny answer from Teague.

As Teague notes, he never won a playoff game against LeBron, who regularly tortured the Hawks (along with pretty much every team in the East) for nearly a decade and rather famously snuffed out the best team Atlanta’s had in 2015. Not only that, but as Teague points out, the crowd in Atlanta was often very pro-LeBron — or at least vocally so — meaning they also had to hear the cheers for James beating them in their home building. That pent up frustration manifested itself in a shoulder check that forced Teague to delete his Instagram because of the hate mail he got. He also went on to note his misfortune running into LeBron in the playoffs continued with the Pacers and that once he finally went to the Western Conference, so did James.

Teague is one of the best storytellers in NBA podcasting and is able to make just about anything funny, including IG death threats for shoving LeBron into the crowd.

John Oliver Took Aim At Dollar Stores On ‘Last Week Tonight’ (And Sideswiped Apple TV+ In The Process)

Bird enthusiast John Oliver has never been afraid to drag Max, his awkwardly-named streaming home. But on the most recent Last Week Tonight he decided to go after the competition. The episode’s main focus was on dollar stores, which — surprise! — are riddled with all kinds of semi-secret foundational problems. But at one point he decided to do a quick but deadly sideswipe on the streamer that’s easiest to forget about: Apple TV.

At one point during the dollar store segment, Oliver dwelled on poor working conditions, highlighting a story about one worker who was ordered to reopen a store soon after it had been robbed, leaving her little time to recoup.

“An armed robbery is a traumatic event people need time to recover from,” Oliver said. “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken light bulb or any show on Apple TV.”

He then dwelled on Apple TV a little longer, digging up a show that hasn’t generated a ton of chatter.

“Did you know Octavia Spencer starred as a true crime podcaster on a show called Truth Be Told for three seasons?” Oliver asked. “Of course you didn’t. It’s Apple TV, where celebrities go to hide.”

Truth Be Told was cancelled earlier this year after three seasons, despite some big names attached. Its first season also starred Aaron Paul and Lizzy Caplan. Others who appeared included Elizabeth Perkins, Michael Beach, Mekhi Phifer, and Gabrielle Union.

Was Oliver’s assessment a little harsh? Maybe. Apple TV does have some major shows, including The Morning Show and especially Ted Lasso. Recently the streamer parted ways with Oliver’s old Daily Show compadre, Jon Stewart, whose current affairs show ran for two seasons and made plenty of news.

You can watch Oliver’s dollar store segment above. The Apple TV business begins around the 14-minute mark.

‘F*ck My Life’: Antony Starr Did *Not* Seem To Enjoy That Sky-High Stunt Work Before His ‘Gen V’ Landing

The Boys Homelander
Amazon

The Gen V season finale included a villainously pleasant visit from Antony Starr’s Homelander, who did so much in less than one minute while stealing the show. That was always the danger with bringing The Boys‘ baddest supe onboard, but it worked incredibly well with the final minutes of this Gen V season.

Again, Starr was onscreen for slightly less than a minute, but of course, there’s always much more work behind the scenes, and in this case, that meant Homelander being hoisted high into the air before coming in for a landing. Wait, Starr has done this before, right? Actually, someone is heard in the background of the below clip remarking, “He normally just lands.” So, this was a different plan than usual, perhaps because Homelander descended amid off-kilter patriotic music, and he needed to really make an entrance.

Whatever the case, Starr did not enjoy dangling so far above solid ground. Here’s how he narrated the experience:

“Hahahaha, f*ck off.

“Haha, f*ck off.

“Ahhhhhhh.

“Fffffff….

“F*ck my life.

“F*ck this.

“F*ck off.

“F*cking c*nts.

“Holy sh*t. Okay, please. That’s good.”

[Deep breathing]

Now, here he goes into the sky. Yikes…

Not fun! Not only that, but as showrunner Eric Kripke revealed, Starr actually did this cameo on his day off from shooting The Boys Season 4 and without any additional pay. In other words, I’m standing by my previous statement: “Whatever the guy is receiving for a paycheck, it isn’t enough.”

Gen V‘s first season and The Boys first three seasons are currently streaming on Amazon.

Paul George Shouted Out Russell Westbrook For Making A Move To The Bench

harden westbrook george

After losing six straight games since making the trade for James Harden, the Clippers finally got back into the win column over the weekend with a 106-100 win over the Rockets. That game featured some late Harden heroics, but it also saw Russell Westbrook make a move to the bench in an effort to create a bit more balance for the starting lineup.

It had become pretty clear that they had a spacing issue with four players that want the ball in their hands, and Westbrook is the one who doesn’t pose much of a threat as a spot-up shooter. While all of their former All-Stars are trying to adapt to a new role, Westbrook volunteered himself to move to the bench in a move that most everyone saw as necessary, but no one was quite sure if there would be someone (Harden or Westbrook) willing to make that move. Given how much Westbrook bristled at the idea of being a bench player with the Lakers a couple years ago, it’s quite the shift in perspective from him and signals how much he genuinely cares about trying to make this Clippers squad work to the best of its abilities — there is also the fact that playing with the bench means he’s far more likely to have the ball in his hands, so it’s not a completely selfless act, but it still is meaningful.

Paul George recognizes that and decided to open this week’s episode of Podcast P with a quick addendum that features George shouting out Russ for his willingness to sacrifice and talking about how vibes picked up after finally getting a win under their belts, as the full episode was recorded prior to to Saturday night’s win.

“[Russ] was the heart and soul for us last year,” George says. “Energy, leader, and I think Clipper nation came to love what he brought to the team. For us to go through this stretch of not winning and not knowing how to win with this squad yet, for him to take the initiative and be like, ‘You know what I’ll sacrifice and I’ll try to make this work and come off the bench,’ it just says a lot about him, bro. He never ceases to amaze me, as long as I’ve played on the same teams with him and as much as I’ve known him. Every day it’s something new. Shout out to him, man. That’s not an easy decision to make, especially when you still have so much game and value to this league and just for us.”

George goes on to talk about how all four of the Clippers stars are enjoying the challenge and process of trying to figure this out, even amid the losing streak. Things still aren’t perfect and they need to figure out how to keep things flowing on offense better than they have, but the good news for L.A. is they should have a good chance of turning this into a winning streak with back-to-back games in San Antonio against the scuffling Spurs.

A mom describes her tween son’s brain. It’s a must-read for all parents

It started with a simple, sincere question from a mother of an 11-year-old boy.

An anonymous mother posted a question to Quora, a website where people can ask questions and other people can answer them. This mother wrote:

How do I tell my wonderful 11 year old son, (in a way that won’t tear him down), that the way he has started talking to me (disrespectfully) makes me not want to be around him (I’ve already told him the bad attitude is unacceptable)?

It’s a familiar scenario for those of us who have raised kids into the teen years. Our sweet, snuggly little kids turn into moody middle schoolers seemingly overnight, and sometimes we’re left reeling trying to figure out how to handle their sensitive-yet-insensitive selves.

Jo Eberhardt, a fantasy writer and mother of two from Australia, penned a reply that is so spot on that it keeps repeatedly popping up on social media. When you nail it, you nail it—and this mother nails it.

“Ah, puberty,” she wrote, “It changes our sweet, wonderful little boys into sweet, eye-rolling, angsty, accidentally disrespectful, but still wonderful young proto-men.” Yup.

Eberhardt then described a discussion she had with her 11 1/2 -year-old son when he started going through this stage—a conversation they had in the car, which is usually the best place to have potentially uncomfortable discussions with kids.

She told her son that she’d messed up in the way she’d talked to him about puberty, then explained exactly what was happening in his brain.

I’ve spent all this time talking to you about the way puberty changes your body,” Eberhardt told her son, “and what to expect as you go through the changes, but I completely forgot to talk to you about what’s going on in your brain right now. Puberty is the time when your brain grows and changes more than at any other time in your life — well, except for when you’re a baby, perhaps. So I really let you down by not preparing you for that. I’m so sorry.

Her son accepted her apology, then asked why is his brain was changing.

“That’s the amazing thing,” she told him. “Did you know that your brain grew and developed so quickly when you were little that by the time you were about five or six, your brain was almost as big and powerful as an adult’s brain?”

“But here’s the thing,” she continued, “Even though your brain was super powerful, the instructions were for a child’s brain. And all the information about building an adult’s brain was a bit… let’s say fuzzy. So your brain did the best it could, but it didn’t really know what kind of person you were going to be back then, or what shape brain you were going to need.”

“Now we come to puberty,” she went on. “See, puberty is amazing. Not only is your body being transformed from a child’s body to an adult’s body, your brain has to be completely rewritten from a child’s brain to an adult’s brain.”

“That sounds hard,” her son responded.

“Yeah, it is,” Eberhardt replied. “That’s why I wish I’d warned you first. See, it takes a lot of energy to completely rewrite a brain. That’s one of the reasons you get tired quicker at the moment — and that, of course, manifests in you being crankier and less patient than normal.”

Eberhardt paused, then added, “That must be really frustrating for you.”

Her son looked over at her, wiping his eyes. “It is,” he responded. Sometimes I just feel really angry and I don’t know why.”

It’s amazing what happens when we explain to kids the physiological reasons for what they’re going through.

Eberhardt continued, “The other thing is that one of the first parts of your brain that gets super-sized to be like an adult is the amygdala. That’s the part that controls your emotions and your survival instincts. You know how we’ve talked about fight/flight/freeze before, and how sometimes our brains think that being asked to speak in public is the same level of threat as being attacked by a sabre tooth tiger?”

Her son laughed. “Yes. So you have to tell your brain that there’s no sabre tooth tiger to help you calm down.”

“That’s right,” Eberhardt replied. “Well, that’s what the amygdala looks after: sabre tooth tiger warnings and big emotions. So, the thing with puberty is that all of a sudden you’ve got an adult-sized amygdala hitting all your emotion buttons and your sabre-tooth tiger buttons. That must be really hard for you to manage.”

Her son nodded and said, “Sometimes I don’t know why I say the things I do. They just come out, and then I feel bad.”

This is the moment where what a parent says can make or break a kid’s spirit. But Eberhardt handled it with empathy and expertise.

“I know, Sweetheart,” she said before explaining:

“See, the last part of your brain that gets rewritten is right at the front of your head. It’s called the frontal cortex. And that’s the part of your brain that’s good at decision making and understanding consequences. So you’ve got this powerful adult amygdala hitting you with massive emotions, but you’ve still got a fuzzy child frontal cortex that can’t make decisions or understand consequences as quickly as the amygdala wants you to. It pretty much sucks.”

“So it’s not my fault?” her son asked.

“No, it’s puberty’s fault your brain works the way it does,” Eberhardt answered. “But that doesn’t mean it’s not your responsibility to recognise what’s going on and change your actions. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible, either. Your feelings are your feelings, and they’re always okay. But you get to choose your actions. You get to choose what you do with your feelings. And, when you make a mistake, you get to choose to apologise for that mistake and make amends.”

Eberhardt said she then paused for dramatic effect. “That’s how you prove that you’re becoming an adult.”

It’s also remarkable what happens when we empathize and communicate with our kids instead of simply chastising them.

Her son responded with a perfectly understandable and relatable, “Puberty sucks.”

“Puberty absolutely sucks,” Eberhardt responded. “I’m not in your head, but I can only imagine that it’s a mess of confusion and chaos, and you don’t know from one minute to the next how you feel about things.”

Her son looked at her in surprise. “Yes! Exactly!”

“If it’s confusing for you living inside there,” Eberhardt continued, “imagine how confusing it is for me, when I only see your actions.”

“That must be really confusing,” her son agreed.

She nodded. “Do you know what that means?”

“What?”

“It means sometimes I’m going to make mistakes. Sometimes I’m going to get upset at things you do because I don’t understand what’s going on in your head. Sometimes I’m going to forget that you’re halfway to being a man, and accidentally treat you like a child. Sometimes I’m going to expect more from you than you’re able to give. This is my first time parenting someone through puberty, and I’m going to make mistakes. So can I ask you a favour?”

“What is it?”

“Can you just keep telling me what’s going on in your head? The more we talk, the easier it will be for both of us to get through this puberty thing unscathed. Yeah?”

“Yeah,” her son said.

When we let our kids know that we’re going through these various phases together, it’s easier to work with them instead of against them.

Eberhardt said they “had a cuddle” before they got out of the car. She also said this conversation didn’t magically make her son always speak respectfully or make her remember that he’s not a little boy anymore. However, it did open up lines of communication and gave them a shared language to use.

For example, she wrote, “He knows what I mean when I say, ‘Sweetheart, I’m not a sabre tooth tiger.'”

Ebehardt wrapped up her excellent answer by saying that she and her son are “muddling through this crazy puberty thing” together, and that she’s “completely confident that he’ll come out the other end a sweet, wonderful young man.”

It’s always so helpful to see examples of good parenting in action. Ms. Eberhardt’s response is something all parents can tuck away for the appropriate time. It’s also a great reminder that our tweens aren’t trying to try us—they’re just trying to get used to their new and improved brains.

One Of The Stars Of ‘The Good Doctor’ Is Leaving The Show To Run For Senate

Hill Harper
ABC

It seems to be a tradition for fan-favorite doctors to leave medical shows in order to pursue a career in politics. Who doesn’t remember where they were when it was announced that Kal Penn would leave behind his promising medical career on House to work with Barack Obama? It changed us as a nation.

The Good Doctors Hill Harper is the latest TV doc to trade his stethoscope for one of those fancy American flag lapel pins. Harper is running to secure the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s open senate seat. It looks like he’s no longer a doctor, good or otherwise.

“Hill Harper feels strongly that there is a crisis in American democracy — too often, government only works for the rich and powerful while the rest of us struggle to find a voice,” Harper’s spokesperson told TVLine. “Hill is dedicating his efforts full time to fixing that, and he’s running for the U.S. Senate as an active union member to give working people more of a voice in Congress.”

Harper has portrayed Dr. Marcus Andrews since season one of the medical drama, which also stars Freddie Highmore. Even though he wasn’t really a doctor, he did go to Brown and Harvard Law, so he probably knows a thing or two about…things. It’s good that Harper is now taking the time to try out another path. There will always be more doctor shows on TV. Grey’s Anatomy has made this very clear.

Here Are The Best Live Music Performances On TV From The Past Week

The best musical performances from the past week of late-night TV include sets from Gracie Abrams, Robert Glasper, Tate McRae, and more. Uproxx has the rundown below so you can catch up or relive your favorites. Here are the best live music performances on TV from the past week.

Cat Power

Veteran rocker Cat Power brought a rollicking performance of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” to her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Power is promoting her new album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, on which she faithfully reproduces one of the American icon’s most storied performances (even if the name of the venue isn’t 100 percent accurate) right down to an audience member heckling Dylan/Power midway through the concert.

Gracie Abrams

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is still finding its footing after the host’s latest bout with COVID-19, but the Grammys’ Best New Artist nominee Abrams had absolutely no trouble finding hers with a strong performance of “I Know It Won’t Work” from her debut album Good Riddance.

Laufey

The Icelandic singer-songwriter and her Bossa Nova ode to butterflies-in-the-stomach unrequited crushes thrilled the audience on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with a string orchestra anchored by Laufey’s Ella Fitzgerald-influenced vocals and jaunty guitar.

Robert Glasper Feat. SiR and Alex Isley

Glasper returned to The Tonight Show with a soulful rendition of his Grammy-nominated new song “Back To Love” featuring SiR and Alex Isley. The wistful ode receives a cheeky instrumental jazz intro but flourishes once SiR and Isley start singing.

Tate McRae

The TikTok-favorite pop singer put in an energetic appearance on SNL, bringing some high school jock-and-cheerleader romance to her choreography.
