Which ‘Cobra Kai’ Characters Will Receive A Spinoff?

Cobra Kai Season 5
Netflix

Netflix’s Cobra Kai will wrap up with a sixth season in 2024, and from there? Well, there’s a new The Karate Kid movie on the way from Sony, which apparently will be working with an altogether different cast (that’s definitely a choice). Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz previously revealed that he and his co-showrunners (Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald) are not involved, but over the years, Hurwitz has indicated that he’s open to more of this franchise. As well, star Ralph Macchio has made it clear that he’s into the idea of expanding the Cobra Kai arm of the Miyagiverse with more movies, and the idea of spinoffs has been tossed around here and there as well.

So, who would receive a spinoff if one or more happen? Thomas Ian Griffith jokingly suggested a Terry Silver romcom while speaking to us, and yes, I would watch that, but it also seems likely that a spinoff could focus on a character’s new dojo. And if the franchise wants to stick with the “underdog rises” spirit, they could go with Jacob Bertrand’s Hawk. I mean, sure, there have been a lot of underdog characters on Cobra Kai, but none have truly come full circle and embodied both villain and good dude quite like Hawk has done. I can also see Netflix wanting to do an offshoot with Robby (Tanner Buchanan) and/or Tori (Peyton List), since they both harbor fanbases.

As for a concrete answer, no one has let that slip yet, but here’s what Heald recently told Collider:

“We will never give actual closure when it comes to anything. We love working in the ‘Cobra Kai’ universe, so there’s always potential to revisit that world. We’re certainly thinking about other ideas within the Miyagi-verse, and it’s only a matter of time before we figure out exactly which direction we’re gonna head. […] We’re really excited about Cobra Kai Season 6. We’re gonna go out with a bang, and it’s gonna be an amazing experience for fans of the franchise.”

Heck, the Miyagi backstory could also work as a movie. The possibilities are truly endless in an ensemble show with so many beloved characters. For now, however, we wait for the “biggest and baddest” season to arrive, so that viewers can binge it all and be mad while waiting for more news. Fun!

Will Taylor Swift Be At The Chiefs Game Against The Eagles?

Taylor Swift Chiefs October 22

The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting the Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday night, November 20. The Super Bowl LVII rematch will double as a Kelce family affair, as Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and his brother, All-Pro Eagles center Jason Kelce, will once again share a football field. Arrowhead was also supposed to be the site of the first-ever meeting between Kelce’s parents and Taylor Swift’s parents, as exclusively reported by Entertainment Tonight on November 15.

However, Swift will no longer be at the Chiefs-Eagles game on Monday night. This might be the rare instance in which someone is bummed to be missing out on scheduled family time during Thanksgiving week.

On Saturday, November 18, Swift was forced to postpone her The Eras Tour concert in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from Saturday to Monday, November 20.

“I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium,” Swift wrote and posted to her since-expired Instagram Story. “The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio. The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first.”

Despite Swift recently acknowledging she is “never beating the sorcery allegations,” she cannot physically be in two places at once, so her rescheduled Rio show will prevent her from supporting Kelce at a game for the fifth time this NFL season. It is unclear whether Donna and Ed Kelce will still meet Andrea and Scott Swift at the game, however.

Kelce and Swift soft-launched their relationship when Swift attended the Chiefs’ 41-10 beatdown of the Chicago Bears on September 24, and we have all lived so many lives since — from ketchup and seemingly ranch to Swift’s “Karma” lyric change and Kelce’s resurfaced tweets.

Bill Burr Gleefully Mocked The Snowflake-y ‘Trump Guys’ Who Are Furious That His Wife Flipped Off The Disgraced Ex-President At A UFC Event

Bill Burr once called Donald Trump “one of the funniest human beings I’ve ever heard in my life” (it wasn’t a compliment), but conservatives weren’t laughing when the comedian’s wife, actress/writer/producer Nia Renee Hill, flipped off the former president at a recent UFC 295. Is there no decency at mixed martial arts events anymore?!? Burr addressed the backlash from the MAGA community on a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show.

“Those Trump guys — they’re always going, ‘Ah, You’re snowflakes, F your feelings,’ and all of that. And then you make fun of Trump, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so disrespectful!’ You’re saying, ‘F Joe Biden!’ It’s like, you can’t have it both ways!” he said, according to Mediaite.

Burr then explained how things went down.

“The guy walked in the arena,” he said. “Everybody cheered. She gave him the finger. Nobody got arrested. That’s why this country’s great. Everybody expressed themselves. Can we all be adults? I mean, I don’t know about you, but I came here to go to the fights. I didn’t know I was going to the Republican National Convention.” At this point, what’s the difference?

Why Was Sam Altman Fired From OpenAI?

Sam Altman OpenAI
Getty Image

Despite the seemingly wild success of ChatGPT amid Silicon Valley’s massive push into artificial intelligence technologies, OpenAI made a shocking move by abruptly firing its CEO Sam Altman. The ouster went down on Friday night and stunned the tech world as Altman was seen as a competent CEO, who had just announced an aggressive slew of suites during OpenAI’s Developer Day earlier in the month. However, it’s that aggressiveness that reportedly led to his removal.

Initially, the OpenAI board released a statement that claimed Altman’s firing was because he was not “consistently candid in his communications.” But as the story unfolded, the board seemed to regret its decision as more details emerged. At the center of the issue was the Developer Day event, which kicked off concerns that Altman was moving too quickly and dangerously with the AI technology.

Via CNN:

That’s fine, perhaps, when it’s a dating app or a social media platform. It’s something entirely different when it’s a technology so good at mimicking human speech and behavior that it can fool people into believing its fake conversations and images are real.

And that’s what reportedly scared the company’s board, which remained majority controlled by the nonprofit wing of the company. [Kara] Swisher reported that OpenAI’s recent developer conference served as an inflection point: Altman announced that OpenAI would make tools available so anyone could create their own version of ChatGPT.

For [Ilya] Sutskever and the board, that was a step too far.

To be clear, the board had justifiable concerns about AI that have been rampant in the scientific community. Unfortunately, for OpenAI, those concerns bumped up against the need for the company to keep revenue coming in for the highly expensive technology, and that’s where Altman ran into trouble. ChatGPT has already had to throttle customer use because the cost of computing power for each query was astronomical.

Via TIME:

From Altman’s point of view, raising more money and finding additional revenue sources were essential. But some members of the board, with ties to the AI-skeptical effective altruism movement, viewed this in tension with the risks posed by advanced AI. Many effective altruists — a pseudo-philosophical movement that seeks to donate money to head off existential risks — have imagined scenarios in which a powerful AI system could be used by a terrorist group to, say, create a bioweapon. Or in the absolute worst case scenario the AI could spontaneously turn bad, take control of weapons systems and attempt to wipe out human civilization. Not everyone takes this scenario seriously, and other AI leaders, including Altman, have argued that such concerns can be managed and that the potential benefits from making AI broadly available outweighs the risks.

Despite the freakout over concerns that Altman is moving too quickly with the controversial technology, he has already been hired by Microsoft to oversee a new AI venture. Meanwhile, OpenAI employees feel the firing of Altman was an egregious mistake, and according to Gizmodo, the majority are threatening to quit if the board members who ousted Altman don’t resign.

Did André 3000 Play The Flute On Future’s ‘Mask Off’?

André 3000 used to be famous as one-half of Outkast. But after releasing New Blue Sun on Friday, November 17, André 3000 is firmly cemented as a famous flutist. A solo album 17 years in the making, New Blue Sun predictably garnered mostly positive and widespread reaction over the weekend, even though it isn’t the rap album people have been desperately awaiting. Among the reaction was a rumor about whether André 3000 played the flute on Future’s “Mask Off,” arguably as surprising as the strictly instrumental album itself.

On Sunday, November 19, several outlets ran with a comment from Metro Boomin, who produced “Mask Off” for Future’s 2017 self-titled album. OnThinIce on X (formerly known as Twitter) cited a since-deleted post and wrote, “Metro Boomin reveals André 3000 played the flute on the intro of ‘Mask Off’ [flame emoji, flute emoji].” Other users have since added the context, “Metro was joking here. André 3000 did not play the flute on Mask Off. The flute is part of the sample.”

If that weren’t enough, Metro Boomin commented on Complex‘s Instagram post, including a video of Metro saying that Andre played the flute on “Mask Off” before playing the track. Complex aggregated it with the framing that André 3000 did, in fact, play flute on “Mask Off,” but Metro Boomin quickly shut that down in the post’s comment section.

“How are you all even considered a real news outlet?” Metro wrote.

Luckily, to avoid any future confusion, people can turn to eight New Blue Sun tracks if they want to hear André 3000 playing the flute.

New Blue Sun is out now via Epic Records. Find more information here.

Is Snoop Dogg Still Smoking Weed?

That Snoop Dogg is such a rascal. Last week, the West Coast rap godfather (pardon me… “Doggfather”) sent the internet into a frenzy when he posted a graphic on his social media channels promising he was “giving up smoke.” Of course, given that smoking weed is the cornerstone of his personal brand, many assumed it meant he was giving up his favorite activity — possibly for health reasons.

Meanwhile, the shrewder among us suspected the announcement was simply teeing up the launch of another new product or endorsement deal. For one thing, we know that Snoop’s history with quitting the “Devil’s Lettuce” has been sketchy at best, and for another, we’re also aware of his nose for marketing and wicked sense of humor (the use of “smoke” and not “marijuana/cannabis/Mary Jane/pot/grass/reefer/chronic/tree/etc.” was a dead giveaway).

Well, lo and behold, here’s Snoop’s announcement of a new endorsement deal with Solo Stove, a brand of smokeless outdoor fire pits (see? dead giveaway). In the ad below, Snoop demonstrates the use of one of the products (which seem a little goofy to me; the smoke flavor is essential to anything you cook over an outdoor flame!).

So is Snoop Dogg still smoking weed? I guess you can never be 100 percent sure, but it seems likely (he’s probably lighting one up as you read this). Sorry, teetotalers, you lost this round. The only smoke the Dogg has given up is the kind you get from a campfire.

Taylor Swift Seemingly Honored A Fan Who Died At ‘The Eras Tour’ With An Emotional Performance Of ‘Bigger Than The Whole Sky’

Taylor Swift posted a written message to her since-expired Instagram Story mourning the sudden death of 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado at The Eras Tour in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on Friday, November 17. In part, Swift wrote, “I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply, and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends.” It seemed as if Swift sang about it from the stage on Sunday night, November 19.

Swift’s second surprise song was “Bigger Than The Whole Sky” from Midnights (3am Edition). Swift has not said whether she was singing it for Benevides, but Swifties believed that this was her way of tributing her late fan. Given the song’s lyrics and Swift’s track record with moving intentionally at all times, it does not feel like a coincidence.

Someone in attendance caught the full performance on video.

Quinn Fife, a prominent Swiftie, resurfaced a December 2022 post by Benevides in which she quoted “Bigger Than The Whole Sky,” while other Swifties showed an outpouring of collective grief and support.

On November 7, an X (formerly known as Twitter) account said to belong to Benevides posted (translated from Portuguese to English), “Like I literally don’t know what my purpose in life will be after I see Taylor.”

On November 18, event organizer Time For Fun confirmed her death with a statement, as translated from Portuguese to English below:

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, 23 years old.

Last night, Ana Clara felt unwell and was promptly attended to by the team of firefighters and paramedics, being taken to the medical center at Estadio Nilton Santos for first aid protocol. Given the situation, the medical team chose to transfer him to Hospital Salgado Filho, where, after almost an hour of emergency care, she unfortunately died.

To the family and friends of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, our sincere condolences.”

An official cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, though several Brazilian outlets have reported that Benevides “suffered cardiac arrest” (as relayed by several outlets, such as Time and USA Today) due to an extreme heat wave, conditions that forced Swift to postpone her second The Eras Tour concert in Rio from Saturday, November 18, to Monday, November 20.

What Does Drake’s New Face Tattoo Mean?

drake
Getty Image

Drake‘s collection of offbeat and personal tattoos is a subject of endless fascination for his fans. From getting his son’s name on his neck to his mother’s initials just under his eye, Drake keeps adding to the set, paying homage to his favorite people, places, and things.

His latest tattoo, according to eagle-eyed fans on social media, is of the word “miskeen,” and it’s just over his right eyebrow. Naturally, those who aren’t familiar with the term might wonder what it means.

“Miskeen” is an Arabic word which means, according to several sources, “poor” or “hopeless.” Its usage in Toronto slang stems from the strong presence of East African cultures in the city, including Ethiopians, Eritreans, and Somalians (it roughly translates to the same use in Amharic, the language of the Habesha people from Ethiopia and Eritrea, hench the above tweet). Modern use has taken this loan word and applied it to mean someone who is not down with street culture (like a mark or buster in Los Angeles). Drake’s tattoo could be a reference to its original use as well; his whole vibe has always been sort of forlorn and heartbroken, and on his recent albums he’s seemed even more so (with a dash of bitterness and spite thrown in).

Whatever Drake means by adding this tattoo to his face, it’ll only add to the endless speculation and discussion of his many inscrutable attributes.
