Weird viral photo of Adele’s face exemplifies the phenomenon called the Thatcher effect

It seems that Adele is going viral once again.

Perhaps you’ve seen the image in question previously (it seems to make the rounds every couple of years). But in case you missed it—it’s Adele’s face. Normal, just upside down.

Only it’s not normal. In fact, when you turn Adele’s face right side up, what you notice is that her eyes and mouth were actually right-side up THE ENTIRE TIME, even though the entire head was upside down. So when you turn the head right side up, the eyes and mouth are now UPSIDE-DOWN—and you can’t unsee it. Do you feel like you’re Alice in Wonderland yet?

Just wait. Things get even more fascinating. Especially because this optical illusion is over 40 years in the making.

Below you’ll find the Adele photo in question. Go ahead. Take a look at it. Then turn the image upside down.

adele, thatcher effect, psychology

Crazy right? And just a little terrifying?

As the Facebook post explains, this mind-boggling image highlights a phenomenon known as the Thatcher effect. Our brains, so much more used to recognizing faces that are right-side up, have difficulty detecting specific changes once a face is upside down.

Seeing that everything is more or less where it should be, our brains don’t notice anything out of the ordinary in Adele’s face until we turn her face back to a normal position.

The Thatcher effect got its name from British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on whose photograph it was first demonstrated back in 1980 by Peter Thompson, Professor of Psychology at York University.

This demonstration was one of the first to explore just how facial recognition works, and certainly the first to suggest that humans (and monkeys, it turns out) process faces on a more holistic level, rather than by individual components like lips and eyes. Since its publication, there has been a wealth of research exploring how our brain takes in both subtle and striking facial configurations.

Funny enough, it was once believed that this illusion only worked on the Prime Minister’s face. But as Adele has proven, anyone can be Thatcherized.

Folks are admitting that Boomers weren’t totally wrong. Here are 19 things they got right.

Over the past few years, Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) have been getting a lot of grief from the generations that came after them, Gen X (1965 to 1980), Millenials (1981 to 1996), and now, Gen Z (1997 to 2012). Their grievances include environmental destruction, wealth hoarding, political polarization, and being judgemental when they don’t understand how hard it is for younger people to make it in America these days.

Every Baby Boomer is different, so it’s wrong to paint them all with a broad brush. But it’s undeniable that each generation shares common values, and some are bound to come into conflict.

However, life in 2023 isn’t without its annoyances. Many that came about after the technological revolution put a phone in everyone’s hands and brought a whole new host of problems. Add the younger generations’ hands-on approach to child rearing and penchant for outrage, and a lot of moden life has become insufferanble.

These problems weren’t created by Boomers but by their hyper-online children and grandchildren who can’t seem to get their faces out of their phones.

A Reddit user named AnitaVodkasoda took to the AskReddit forum and asked posters to admit there were some things that Boomers got right. “What is something you can say ‘I’m with the boomers on this one’ about?” they asked, and many responses came from people fed up with the modern-day frustrations caused by technology and social media.

Here are 19 things that people think that Boomers got right.

1. App exhaustion

“Any business which requires you to use an app. I don’t want to download an app, make an account, and remember said password for the account. Especially because the app doesn’t even work a lot of the time or is extremely convoluted with the frontend design.” — Sammy_Henderschplitz

2. Let kids play

“Kids do great with totally unstructured outdoor play. They don’t need an organized game or activity. If you take a bunch of kids to a park and keep an eye on them they’ll figure out stuff to do together and often come up with creative and interesting things that adults wouldn’t have thought of. Just keep them physically safe and let them run around and do kid stuff. You don’t need to curate everything.” — HeavyHebrewHammer

3. Pricey concerts

“Concert ticket pricing is too high. Once you get in a beer is $17!” — Whatabout-Dre

4. Tip creep

“Every business asking for tips at checkout. Digital menus. Not being able to own things anymore like software or having to pay monthly fees for car features.” — mutualbuttsqueezin

5. Phones at concerts

“Phones at concerts. I take one pic when the artist comes on and then I just enjoy the show. You’re never gonna look back at your sh**** videos with you singing off-key in the background lol just enjoy the music.” — Used_Eraser

6. Kids online

“Social media is unhealthy and children shouldn’t have unrestricted access to the internet.” — horrorflowers

7. Lazy tablet parents

“Parents who let their kids use tablets in public spaces with the volume all the way up, no headphones, and not doing it to stop an imminent tantrum (if they truly cannot get the kid out of that shared space for some reason) are trashy af. Fight me.” — kishbish

8. Bring back knobs

“Touchscreens in cars suck.” — sketchy_painting

9. Bad customer service

“Calling any business and getting an automated system that takes you 12 minutes to get through, doesn’t answer your question, and you can’t get a real person.” — SexyJesus7

10. Raising entitled kids

“The ‘my kid is never wrong’ attitude every parent seems to have now. And we wonder why there’s a teacher shortage.” — Cinderjacket

11. Emojis in work emails

“Learn to write a professional email. The number of Gen Z kids I’ve had who send me emails without salutations, with emojis and shorthand like lol omg etc, without proper spelling and punctuation, is crazy. That is fine for texting or exchanges with people you’re friends with, but it’s not for the workplace.” — pistachiobees

12. Paper straws

“Paper straws suck.” — JohnYCanuckEsq

13. Face tattoos

“Don’t get tattoos on your face.” — Disastrous-Aspect569

14. Gender reveals

“Just tell us if you are having a boy or girl. Or wait until the baby is born. We don’t need to assemble for some ridiculous reveal. I don’t want pink or blue dust all over the place.” — Kevin Dean

15. People are too sensitive

“I think people tend to be too sensitive, personal outrage shouldn’t be so important. It’s disheartening to see so many people whine and cry and fight over inconsequential nonsense while pressing issues remain unaddressed.” — Empathetic_Orch

16. TV sounds terrible

“Movies, and some TV shows for that matter, are mixed idiotically these days. I don’t appreciate having to crank the volume way up to hear the whispered dialog, only to have a music swell or explosion or something blow my head clean off. No amount of tweaking my sound system has fixed this.” — broberds

17. Affordable housing

“Being able to afford a house.” — The-Black-Douglas

18. Blinded by the lights

“Headlights are too damned bright now.” — 15all

19. The people on your lawn

“Get off my lawn.” — Disastrous_Motor_189

Real Estate Deliver A Nostalgic Gift To ‘The Adventures Of Pete & Pete’ Fans (With Pete And Pete Themselves) Via Their ‘Water Underground’ Video

Real Estate was one of the premier indie rock groups of the 2010s, and they started the current decade strong with their 2020 album The Main Thing. Now they’re keeping it rolling: Today (November 27), the band announced Daniel, their sixth album. The 11-track LP is set for February 23, 2024.

They also shared a video for breezy lead single “Water Underground” and it’s a lot of fun, especially if you’re a ’90s Nickelodeon fan. The clip is inspired by the classic show The Adventures Of Pete & Pete and even stars the program’s Danny Tamberelli and Michael C. Maronna.

Real Estate singer Martin Courtney says of the song, “This song is about writing songs. I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from. The constant flow of music in the back of your head. You get an idea while driving or walking the dog or something and you want to hold on to it.”

Tamberelli also noted, “New Jersey roots are hard to break. Julian [lynch, guitar], Alex [Bleeker, bass and vocals], and Martin all grew up one town away from me and were actually friends with the younger siblings of my friends from Ridgewood. They told me they even saw me perform at the local bandshell with some of those older siblings while I was in high school. The video brings it full circle and adding my dear old friends from the show into the fold really tied it all together.”

Watch the “Water Underground” video above. Below, find the Daniel cover art and tracklist, along with Real Estate’s 2024 tour dates.

Did Beyoncé Direct The ‘Renaissance’ Movie?

beyonce
Getty Image

This weekend, Beyoncé’s concert film, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, premiered in Los Angeles with a star-studded event attended by a who’s-who of today’s biggest names in music. While the film itself is set to hit theaters on December 1, you can probably expect to learn more about the movie this week, whenever any embargoes are lifted by Parkwood Entertainment.

However, there are a few things we already know. Thanks to the film’s trailer we know that there will be some behind-the-scenes footage, as well as those long-awaited music videos. And thanks to the film’s marketing we know who directed it: Beyoncé herself, along with James B. Merryman and Mark Ritchie, adding another hyphen to her long list of talents.

One of the other takeaways from the film’s premiere was how her daughter, Blue Ivy, improved her stage presence after seeing some negative comments online. As it happens, the 11-year-old was only supposed to appear at one tour stop after finagling a concession from her perfectionist mom, but once she had something to prove, she trained hard for future appearances.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé fans couldn’t help but speculate about which moments from the singer’s massive Renaissance World Tour made it into the film, sharing predictions via social media ranging from inspired to downright silly.

SNX: This Week’s Best Sneakers, Including The Jordan 3 Fear, The NOCTA Air Force 1, & More

SNX DLX
Uproxx/Getty

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet. This week, despite it being Cyber Monday and sneaker sales on popular silhouettes going up at all the big sneaker brands and retailers, there are actually new shoes dropping too.

Because of the big sales, these sneakers are flying totally under the radar which is a shame because even though the drop list is small, there are actually some pretty dope sneakers releasing this week. Highlights include the NOCTA AF-1, a black version of the VaporMax Moc, the Air Jordan 3 Fear, a Sacai, Jean Paul Gaultier Nike collaboration, and the latest from Pharrell’s Humanrace.

Actually, those aren’t just highlights, that’s the whole list. It’s a little light. But as I said, BANGERS! Let’s dive into the best new sneakers for Cyber Monday.

Nike NOCTA Air Force 1 White

SNX DLX
Nike

Price: $160

Drake is back with another sneaker in his NOCTA line, this time the brand’s take on the mighty AF-1. The sneaker doesn’t do anything to change the design or silhouette, instead, this is just a premium take on the AF-1 with a premium leather upper, a new perforation pattern on the toe box, and a triple white colorway.

The midsole reads “Love You Forever” with hearts in place of the usual star design. Rounding out the design is a custom lace dubrae and a NOCTA logo in place of the usual Nike Air on the left heel. Clearly, Drake is a massive fan of the original and wanted his take to be a slightly elevated version of the classic design.

The Nike NOCTA Air Force 1 White is set to drop on November 24th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $160. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Air VaporMax Moc Roam Black

SNX DLX
Nike

Price: $220

The VaporMax Moc was already a stealthy-looking sneaker that blended perfectly into your fit but now that it’s dropping in a black colorway, this is straight up on some ninja-shit. The sneaker features a lightweight but utilitarian build with a slip-on fit, a full-length VaporMax air unit, and a woven shroud.

This sneaker is futuristic minimalism at its finest!

The Nike Air VaporMax Moc Roam Black is set to drop on November 24th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $220. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Air Jordan 3 Fear

SNX DLX
Nike

Price: $210

Shame on Nike for secretly dropping this Jordan 3 Fear on what is essentially a throwaway week. Also, was this supposed to be a Halloween release? The name and black and orange colorway have us convinced Nike botched the intended release date on this one.

The Fear features a Night Stadium leather upper with suede accents and hints of Total Orange on the eyelets and embroidered Jumpman branding. Rounding out the design is a black and grey elephant print mudguard.

The Nike Air Jordan 3 Fear is set to drop on November 25th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $210. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Sacai x Jean Paul Gaultier x Nike Vaporwaffle

SNX DLX
Jean Paul Gaultier

Price: $250

It’s truly a shame that this union between Sacai, Jean Paul Gaulthier, and Nike is dropping on the same week as Thanksgiving because this release shouldn’t be this under the radar. No joke, this drop is in the running for one of the best of the year.

The three-way sneaker collaboration features Sacai’s layered waffle design with a woven multi-fabric upper. The sneaker is available in a loud multi-toned colorway or a minimal grayscale and white colorway.

The Sacai x Jean Paul Gaultier x Nike Vaporwaffle is out now for a retail price of $250. Pick up a pair exclusively at the Jean Paul Gaultier webstore.

The List Of The Most-Hated TV Show Characters Of All-Time Is Dominated By ‘Game Of Thrones’ And Moms

joffrey
hbo

The people have spoken — and they still hate Joffrey Baratheon.

The slappable Game of Thrones villain was named the Most Hated TV Character of All-Time in a new poll from Ranker. Joffrey finished number one with over 9,500 votes, well ahead of runner-up Skyler White from Breaking Bad. Wonder why. Based on the number of votes, two more Game of Thrones characters, Ramsey Bolton and Cersei Lannister, are in third and fourth place, followed by Lori Grimes from The Walking Dead.

So, the most hated TV characters ever are two genuine monsters and three moms? Got it. There’s also a number of cartoon characters, including Dora, Scrappy-Doo, and Caillou. Now him I agree with.

Here’s the full top 10 (Ranker has a different order, but I’m going by the overall number of votes):

1. Joffrey Baratheon – Game of Thrones
2. Skyler White – Breaking Bad
3. Ramsey Bolton – Game of Thrones
4. Cersei Lannister – Game of Thrones
5. Lori Grimes – The Walking Dead
6. Dora – Dora the Explorer
7. Emily Waltham – Friends
8. The Governor – The Walking Dead
9. Scrappy-Doo – Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo
10. Marie Schrader – Breaking Bad

Jack Gleeson, who played Joffrey on Game of Thrones, took a break from acting following the Purple Wedding because he was “not deriving as much enjoyment as I did from acting as I used to,” he said earlier this year. “For some reason, I don’t know it became a bit kind of mechanical and less kind of passionate when I started Game of Thrones.” But his hiatus is over: Gleeson will appear (with a great mustache) in the BBC series The Famous Five.

Hopefully Caillou’s next appearance is in a shallow grave.

When Will Taylor Swift Announce ‘Reputation (Taylor’s Version)?’

Taylor Swift
Getty Image

Last night (November 26), Swifties were convinced that Taylor Swift was going to announce the release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version). That didn’t end up happening, but something else major did: This morning, she revealed that her beloved The Eras Tour movie will soon be available to watch at home via renting on demand. That’s great news for fans, but that doesn’t resolve the Reputation situation.

When Will Taylor Swift Announce Reputation (Taylor’s Version)?

As aforementioned, the big expectation was that Swift’s latest re-recorded album would be announced yesterday. That didn’t prove to be the case, so now, it’s not really clear when Reputation (Taylor’s Version) will be officially announced. We can look at previous announcements for clues about when the Reputation news may arrive, though.

She announced Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in May this year, at the first of her Nashville tour dates. Then, in August, she announced 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at her final US concert of 2023, at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium. Nashville is significant given it’s where Swift’s career got its start, and the LA show was the conclusion of her US tour dates this year. Both were special moments, so it would stand to reason that a Reputation announcement would similarly be tied to some sort of special event or place.

When or where, though, remains to be seen. Maybe she’ll announce on or around the December 13 VOD release of the Eras Tour movie? Perhaps it’ll be a Christmas or New Year’s Eve/Day reveal? Maybe she’ll announce it at one of her first concerts of 2024, in Tokyo in early February? It’s hard to say, but those are dates at least worth keeping an eye on.

The Best Live Music Performances On TV From The Past Week

offset don toliver
Getty Image

The best musical performances from the past week of late-night TV include sets from Offset, Davido, The National, and more. Uproxx has the rundown below so you can catch up or relive your favorites. Here are the best live music performances on TV from the past week.

Offset & Don Toliver:

Fresh from the release of his second solo album, Set It Off, Offset stopped by 30 Rock to deliver a grooving performance of his song “Worth It” alongside Don Toliver on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. With the stage reflecting a summery beach setting in contrast to the actual weather outside, the set was much more appropriate for the upbeat single, which samples Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See.”

Davido:

Speaking of summery songs, there is perhaps no genre as full of them as Afrobeats. One of that genre’s biggest stars, Davido, also hit the Tonight Show stage for an exuberant performance, playing a medley of his songs “Feel” and “Unavailable,” flanked by a pair of joyous dancers and backed by a lustrous, brassy band.

The National:

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is known for bringing in not just high-profile talent, but also some of the headiest. The National offered a prime example of this tendency with a moody performance of their song “Space Invader” from Laugh Track.

Alec Benjamin:

Rising star Alec Benjamin dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a soulful performance of “Different Kind Of Beautiful.” The introspective track was complemented by setting the stage as a cozy bedroom, complete with a record player, reading lamp, and even a laptop open to Pro Tools.

When Will ‘Fargo’ Season 5, Episode 3 Come Out?

Fargo Season 5 Jon Hamm
FX

Fargo Season 5 dropped its two-episode premiere last week, and with it came a heaping helping of Jon Hamm‘s nipple-ring wearing sheriff, who’s not above showing his nude butt to FBI agents after a dip in the hot tub.

In Season 5, Hamm plays a Trump-loving sheriff who has some questionable views about how he enforces the law. This puts him in the path of Juno Temple‘s Dot, who’s up to her neck in debt and a past that won’t leave her alone.

In an act of desperation, Dot turns to her mother-in-law Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh) for help, sparking a series of events that will entangle Hamm’s nipple rings in more than whatever he’s got in his sex trunk. (Yup, there’s a sex trunk.)

When Will ‘Fargo’ Season 5, Episode 3 Come Out?

Fargo Season 5 Episode 3 will air Tuesday, November 28 at 10 PM ET on FX. Episode 3 will also start streaming Wednesday, November 29 at 3 AM ET on Hulu.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The latest installment of Fargo is set in Minnesota and North Dakota, 2019. After an unexpected series of events lands “Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon” (Juno Temple) in hot water with the authorities, this seemingly typical Midwestern housewife is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.

Fargo Season Episodes 1 and 2 are available to stream on Hulu.
