‘I felt ill’: Brendan Fraser describes sexual assault that nearly made him quit acting

Remember Brendan Fraser? 10 years ago, he was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Then, he suddenly disappeared.

If you were a kid in the late ’90s and early ’00s, chances are you saw a Brendan Fraser movie. The comedy and action star catapulted to fame behind blockbusters like “The Mummy” franchise, “George of the Jungle,” “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” and the Oscar-winning film “Crash.”

But after 2008, he largely disappeared from major starring roles. His absence wasn’t due to drugs, a sex-scandal, or illness — despite memes and even reported articles speculating about his career arc, with many blaming it on poor career choices.

Fraser revealed in a recent interview that an incident of sexual harassment led him to withdraw from his high-profile lifestyle.

Lately, the actor has gradually returned to more high-profile roles, and in an interview with GQ, he explained that the real reason he stepped back from the spotlight was because of being physically groped by Philip Berk, a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

In his own book, Berk admitted to “pinching” Fraser in the buttocks after an event, but Fraser says the incident was much worse. “His left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around.”

“I felt ill. I felt like a little kid,” he told GQ. “I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.”

He said it’s time to speak out, and other male victims of harassment are supporting him.

Berk has called the allegation a “total fabrication” but acknowledges he sent Fraser an apology letter after the incident when the actor complained to the HFPA. Fraser said he tried to bury his feelings about the incident, but he was moved into action after seeing actresses and actors speaking up at this year’s Golden Globes.

“Am I still frightened? Absolutely. Do I feel like I need to say something? Absolutely. Have I wanted to many, many times? Absolutely. Have I stopped myself? Absolutely.”

Despite his reservations, people seem to believe, and be genuinely moved by, Fraser’s claim. Once the target of jokes, Fraser has become a catalyst for moving praise across social media.

He’s also earned some public support from actor Terry Crews, who has publicly discussed experiencing a similar incident years ago.

“Brendan is amazingly courageous in telling this,” Crews wrote on Twitter. “His assault experience is extremely similar to mine — ending with the assailant explaining away his actions. One man’s ‘horseplay’ is another man’s humiliation.”

Victims of sexual harassment and assault often face deep shame and fear in speaking out. Speaking out takes courage.

Speaking out after experiencing harassment or assault can be an incredible challenge, often full of personal and professional risk. Though the majority of assaults are against women, men face their own similar challenges in overcoming shame, doubt, and repercussions for coming forward and speaking out. When men like Fraser and Crews speak out, they help clear the path for other men to come forward with their own stories.

The Netflix Cup Puts The Streamer One Step Closer To A Sports Version Of The ‘Bravoverse’

netflix cup standard
Netflix/Merle Cooper

LAS VEGAS – It didn’t take long for the Netflix Cup to reveal itself as anything but a typical pro-am golf event. As the pairs (each golfer from the streamer’s Full Swing teamed up with an F1 driver from Drive To Survive) teed off at the first hole, the scramble — literally — was on. The goal was to get the ball in the hole as quickly as possible, and after their first shot, the teams piled into their carts and raced to their next shot.

For golf purists, this probably elicited an eye roll or two, especially at the pristine, perfectly manicured Wynn Golf Club. But for Netflix, their first foray into live sports was an announcement to the world that the plan is coming together.

From Marshawn Lynch on course giving off the wall commentary and interviews to a Squid Game themed red light/green light hole, the eight-hole format moved quickly and had just enough competitive action to keep things moving. There were awkward moments and some technical things still need to be smoothed out, but that’s to be expected after any first-time approach. And host Kay Adams deserves credit for holding it all together throughout the event.

For a platform that traditionally would see users binging Seinfeld and Love Is Blind, it would be easy to stay out of the live sports fray. But there’s a bigger plan in place, and with rumors that Netflix might try to get into the bidding for the NBA In-Season Tournament, case studies like the Netflix Cup allow for rapid testing of the product in real-time. It might not always go well (as seen by the attempted Love Is Blind reunion earlier in the year), but there are learnings to be had from every attempt.

If anything, this puts Netflix one step closer to realizing a vision of a sports version of the Bravoverse, which has served that network well over the years. Bravo Con just concluded in Las Vegas prior to The Netflix Cup’s arrival, and demand for the stars hasn’t waned over the years. Having multiple properties that exist inside the same universe, with the potential for those individuals to show up in other shows, builds a larger world for viewers. And Bravo learned a long time ago that the quickest formula to getting people to care about anything from high-end real estate to cooking was to put personality first, and let stars be themselves (with the benefit of crafty editing and a little bit of mess).

As the pendulum swung from players revealing more of themselves to starting to run and organize their own projects, we’re actually learning less about athletes than before. Access has been chopped as players exact control over documentaries and podcasts. Sure, their personalities bleed through at times, but it’s only one angle of who they are. The Last Dance worked because it was a singular event about a very specific subject who was already larger than life in Michael Jordan. And its launch was only bolstered by it becoming destination viewing during the pandemic when live sports were shut down. The wrong lesson was taken away from that, in that the subjects could determine what was and wasn’t interesting about a project. There have been wins along the way (with The Redeem Team being one of them), but at the end of the day, the old Us Weekly “stars they’re just like us” mantra holds true. Viewers don’t always want a polished, convenient narrative when it comes to players. They want “reality” — even the reality tv version.

Drive To Survive captured that. It found the glitz and glamor of F1 but developed compelling storylines for individual drivers and in the rivalries between them. F1 is the closest thing sports has to a Selling Sunset or a Million Dollar Listing. You’ll see yachts and CEOs and opulence spilling into everything, but there’s fierce competitiveness above all else. And winning is still everything. Full Swing is still finding its footing, but golf was a natural bridge. Athletes can always relate to other athletes, and the “Boardroom” approach has them moving into other industries that fit conveniently into a Sports Bravoverse. And as more players team up and invest in other sports (Pat Mahomes, who produces Quarterback, recently invested in F1’s Alpine team), the cross-contamination is already there for more offerings as long as the perspectives aren’t too closely gatekept by the players themselves.

The Netflix Cup gave us a taste of that. All it took was Carlos Sainz fumbling the cup itself and seeing it smash into the ground that these guys are human, and humans can be silly, or be villains, or be imperfect, or start drama. Letting us into a little mess won’t keep them from being larger than life. It’ll just help us relate to them, and binge more in the process.

How To Watch Baby Keem’s ‘The Melodic Blue’ Movie

In September 2021, Baby Keem released his major-label debut album, The Melodic Blue. A deluxe version followed in October 2022. And Keem still isn’t finished with The Melodic Blue, as an accompanying visual was announced today (November 16).

As per a press release, The Melodic Blue visual will be presented by Eerie Times, pgLang, and Amazon Music to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video on December 5. Information is sparse, other than the fact that it stars acclaimed actress Amandla Stenberg. “Keem’s internal battle leads us through fragments of memory and temptation as he navigates the depths of The Melodic Blue,” the press release teases.

Last Saturday, November 11, The Hillbillies — comprised of Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar — headlined Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival (newly labeled “The Best Festival In America” by Uproxx’s Aaron Williams and Philip Cosores). Before the set’s start, a trailer for Keem’s The Melodic Blue visual played.

Someone in attendance captured the trailer on video, later circulating on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Along with Stenberg, the Savannah Setten-directed visual will co-star Baby Keem, Shakira Janai Paye, Francis Lovehall, and Séréna Sy. The press release confirms that it was co-executive produced by Keem, Kendrick Lamar, and Dave Free. Jamie Rabineau and Cornell Brown are also credited producers.

Snoop Dogg Broke Stoners’ Hearts Everywhere By Announcing He’s ‘Giving Up Smoke’

snoop dogg
Getty Image

Snoop Dogg, who is arguably hip-hop’s most famed stoner (no offense to Method Man, Redman, or Wiz Khalifa), has apparently decided to give up smoking weed.

Or at least, that’s what baffled, befuddled, and outright confused fans determined he meant when he posted on his social media channels, “After much consideration & conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke. Please respect my privacy at this time.”

Considering the random and at times chaotic nature of Snoop’s social media presence, some confusion or skepticism would be warranted. After all, Snoop had previously changed his name to “Snoop Lion” and made a reggae album, and is known for trolling his fans, offering midnight musings, and generally goofing off on Instagram and Twitter. Not to mention, this isn’t the first time he’s “quit” smoking weed, and we all know how long that lasted.

His announcement could also just be set up for a rollout; he has been teasing an album called Missionary — a follow-up to his star-making debut Doggystyle — for some time. Heck, he could just be publicly announcing his advocacy for edibles. But given his request for privacy, it’s probably best to keep speculation to a minimum and let him release details on his own time — and hope that he’s in good health, physical or mental.

In the meantime, let’s all enjoy looking back on some of our favorite Snoop Dogg smoke stories from Ed Sheeran, Rob McElhenny, Matthew McConaughey, Seth Rogen, and Willie Nelson.

The 1975’s Matty Healy Thinks It’s ‘A F*cking Outrage’ They Didn’t Get A 2024 Grammy Nomination: ‘Are They F*cking Mental?’

Matty Healy took the stage during The 1975’s second night at Madison Square Garden to share his thoughts about the 2024 Grammy Award nominations. More specifically, the band wasn’t nominated for their recent album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language.

“The fact we didn’t get nominated for a Grammy is a f*cking outrage,” Healy said. “And the reason people don’t say that is ’cause it’s not a very tasteful thing to say. But I’m way past tasteful.”

“Are you f*cking mental?” he continued. “Are they f*cking mental? A Brief Inquiry…, I Like It When You Sleep… — nothing. F*ck off! Dickheads. What the f*ck are they on about?”

Healy then went on to point out in his speech that one of the fan-favorite songs from the album, “About You,” should’ve received a nod as well.

“I mean, ‘About You’ just on its own merits deserves a f*cking Grammy,” Healy added. “I mean, I don’t really care that much but it just winds me up.”

However, it’s not completely gone unacknowledged. The album’s producer, Jack Antonoff, was nominated for Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical. The 1975 have also been nominated in previous years, including for Best Rock Song (“Give Yourself A Try”) — so it seems it was just another one of Healy’s on-stage sarcastic moves.

John Krasinski Immediately Started Trending After That Report About Pedro Pascal In ‘Fantastic Four,’ And People Sure Have Thoughts

Krasinski Fantastic Four
Marvel Studios

With Marvel Studios apparently eager to move past the box office failure of The Marvels, the highly-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot may have finally locked down a major casting decision. Wednesday evening saw numerous trade reports that Pedro Pascal is in talks for the role of Reed Richards a.k.a. Mister Fantastic.

However, should Pascal take the part — which is not a done deal yet — his portrayal will not be Reed Richards’ first appearance in the MCU. John Krasinski brought a long simmering piece of fan-casting to life by appearing as the classic Marvel character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite the fan reception to Krasinski’s alternate reality version of the Fantastic Four patriarch, the actor has heavily hinted that the cameo was a one-time thing. Krasinsksi has also expressed apprehension to locking himself into the comic book role.

That said, Marvel fans are hoping the studio will change its mind and find a way to bring Krasinski back as Reed Richards. Shortly after the Pascal news broke, Krasinksi began trending on Twitter as fans reacted to the casting decision.

“Huh. I love Pedro, but John Krasinski made a perfect Reed Richards, I thought,” comics legend Gail Simone tweeted.

“Personally we should have got Ioan Gruffudd Reed Richards variant in [Multiverse of Madness] and John Krasinski as the main MCU Mr Fantastic going forward, but that’s just me of course,” Darth Thunder wrote.

“What is Marvel doing? Look at John Krasinski, he’s literally Reed Richard,” Jason wrote.

Macaulay Culkin’s ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ Appearance Was Greeted With A Lot Of… Thirst

Macaulay Culkin Jeopardy
Jeopardy Productions

Famously salty Jeopardy! champ James Holzhauer went on record to declare that he was not impressed by this season’s Celebrity Jeopardy! lineup. Come on, who doesn’t like some Christopher Meloni on their TV screen? I guess he’s not a fan. Lisa Ann Walter (Abbott Elementary), Brian Baumgartner (The Office), and an array of other contestants were lined up, but what really seems to get the people going is some Macaulay Culkin.

You read that correctly. The year is 2023, and people are here for the former Home Alone star and Pizza Underground vocalist/kazooist, and this is probably an overdue move for him. As the show highlighted on Twitter, Mr. @IncredibleCulk has been a clue on Jeopardy! over 40 times.

If you missed the episode, it’s now available to stream on Hulu. As Access Hollywood noted on Twitter, he makes these faces.

Granted, Culkin did not win. He lost to Rachel Dratch, but people were still here for the first Culkin who ever became famous. From remarks like “b*tch he look GOOD! Is he canceled? or can I stare alittle bit?” to “drooling over how healthy and gorgeous Macaulay Culkin is,” the thirst ran rampant.

Mayim Bialik sure is missing out on a lot these days.

Is Beyoncé Performing At The Sphere In Las Vegas?

beyonce club renaissance
Getty Image

Once upon a time, if an artist was booked to do a residency in Las Vegas, it meant they were getting older, past their prime, or otherwise washed up. Not so, these days.

After hit makers like Adele, Christina Aguilera, and Usher made Las Vegas a hotspot for performers at the heights of their careers, more acts than ever are looking to get in on the action — including, reportedly, Beyoncé.

According to The New York Post, the Las Vegas Sphere owner James Dolan (who also owns Madison Square Garden and the Knicks basketball team) is in talks with the Renaissance singer to have her own residency at the brand-new venue when U2’s own run ends next year.

The Post notes that both Jay-Z, Beyoncé’s husband, and her mom, Tina Knowles, have toured the Sphere, but her team wants $10 million for the residency — the same amount U2 earned for their own 36-date stay. While this would seem to be good for the venue’s operators, because of the upfront payments, they could actually make much less money than they would for a usual concert. The majority of the Sphere’s revenue comes from suite sales and advertising on the LED exterior of the venue, and it’s already lost a little under $100 million since it was completed and opened earlier this year.

Still, a Beyoncé residency would be nothing to shake a stick at, as her fans have already proven they’ll collectively shell out the GDP of a small country to see the Queen live.

What To Watch: Our Picks For The TV Shows And Movies We Think You Should Stream This Week

CROWN
NETFLIX

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish shows available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

20. The Golden Bachelor (Hulu)

BACH
ABC

What we have on our hands here is a Bachelor spinoff about an older gentleman looking for love from a group of similarly aged ladies. Which is… honestly kind of adorable. Good for them. And good for us, too, especially if one of the episodes features a date where they eat dinner at a diner at 4:45 and then go watch an episode of Columbo in matching recliners. This was written as a joke but honestly sounds kind of wonderful. That’s true love right there, people.

Watch it on Hulu

19. Invincible (Amazon)

INVINC
AMAZON

Robert Kirkman’s other most beloved comic book series proved that Amazon really is doing superheroes and supervillains better than anyone else right now. When this round of episodes begins, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) will need to fully reckon with the implications of that climactic fight in the sky with his dad, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Additionally, his love life will receive new wrinkles, and Walton Goggins will be back, meaning that the man who would be Boyd Crowder again is achieving TV supremacy with every passing year. New characters shall be portrayed by Ben Schwartz and Tatiana Maslany.

Watch it on Hulu

18. Living for the Dead (Hulu)

DEAD
HULU

Kristen Stewart’s gay ghost hunting show has everything: slayances, spook-kikis, haunted strip clubs, and comedian Roz Hernandez snacking on donuts while she yells at homophobic poltergeists. The group – a hodgepodge of paranormal experts that includes a psychic, a witch, and a tarot card reader – road trips across the country in this docuseries produced by the Queer Eye creators, chatting it up with demonic entities and benevolent spooks to get to the root of some very real, very human problems. If there’s a better way to spend your weekend than watching a group of well-dressed Queer spiritualists commune with the dead while cracking jokes and busting stereotypes, we don’t want to know about it.

Watch it on Hulu

17. Quiz Lady (Hulu)

QUIZ
HULU

The important stuff here:

— This movie stars Sandra Oh and Awkwafina and Will Ferrell, which is a good start

— This is the official summary: “Anne and her estranged train-wreck of a sister, Jenny, must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild cross-country trek to get the cash.”

Yes, this will do just fine.

Watch it on Hulu

16. Rick and Morty (Adult Swim)

Ricky and Morty season 6 trailer
Adult Swim/YouTube

Rick and Morty used to take notoriously long breaks between seasons, but not this time. Season seven of the animated sci-fi comedy series returns less than a year after the season six finale. There have been big changes behind the scenes, however: co-creator Justin Roiland, who also voiced the title characters, was fired from the show. Tricky line to straddle going forward, but the show has rarely let us down before.

15. Rap Sh!t (Max)

RAP
MAX

Rap Sh!t has returned for a second season which means there is a new batch of episodes that follow the consistently entertaining lives of Shawna and Mia as they rise up the ranks in Miami’s rap scene. Season one of the Issa Rae-led series was all about establishing their rap careers, and now in season two, the duo looks to take things beyond South Beach. With new heights come new struggles as Shawna and Mia will have their integrity tested over and over again in exchange for quick success. Through it all, you can expect to laugh and cheer on the duo all while enjoying the show’s stellar soundtrack which features appearances from real-life hip-hop stars and up-and-coming acts who fit the show’s aesthetic.

14. Rustin (Netflix)

RUSTIN
NETFLIX

Rustin is all of the following things:

— A biopic of Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin, who helped MLK organize the 1963 March on Washington but whose efforts were minimized at the time and therefore largely forgotten since because he was openly gay at a time when that was not convenient for public figures

— From Higher Ground, the production company helmed by Barack and Michelle Obama

— Loaded with talent like Colman Domingo and Chris Rock and Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald

13. Pain Hustlers (Netflix)

PAIN
NETFLIX

Emily Blunt portrays a down-on-her-luck single mom who launches a new career alongside Chris Evans’ pharmaceutical sales rep. Not a great idea, ultimately, given that she becomes involved in a racketeering scheme. And of course, she begins to realize that this company’s success is coming at a ghastly price for humanity. This is a dramatized version of the rise and fall of Insys Therapeutics, which no longer exists, and yeah, you will definitely find out why.

12. Fingernails (Apple TV)

FINGER
APPLE

Apple TV+’s Fingernails turns love into an equation that can only be solved by, you guessed it, AI. Jessie Buckley plays Anna, a woman in a long term, algorithmically-sound relationship with Ryan (The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White) that’s been verified and sterilized by something called The Love Test – a machine that demands a couple’s fingernails in order to qualify their relationship’s percentage of success. When Anna meets her new co-worker Amir (Riz Ahmed), numbers give way to actual chemistry, causing her to doubt everything she thought she knew about love. It’s probably the most interesting soft-fi romance drama you’ll see this year.

Watch it on Apple TV Plus

11. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix)

scott pilgrim anime
netflix

Nearly every actor from the original, cult-favorite Scott Pilgrim film is back for this anime-inspired Netflix series that also functions as a clever remix. Is it as good as the actual run of sequels we should have been given over the last 15 years? Noting could be, but it comes close, leaning on its all-world voice cast and the very specific charm that drove the film and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s original graphic novels.

10. Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (Peacock)

DESTROY
PEACOCK

The blurring of the barrier between comedy and drama has been good for all of us, but occasionally we just need someone to throw a bunch of weird, wild, crap at the screen without there needing to be a message or a point. Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain (a film about some 20somethings getting lost in the woods while hunting for treasure), feels like exactly that kind of film, leaning toward comedy chaos with the Please Don’t Destroy comedy trio (of SNL digital short fame), Bowen Yang, Meg Statler, and late night comedy GOAT Conan O’Brien.

9. Lawmen: Bass Reeves (Paramount Plus)

BASS
PARAMOUNT

Taylor Sheridan currently has 6666 in the works on the Yellowstone side, but first, he’s taking viewers back to the real Old West. David Oyelowo portrays the legendary Black U.S. Deputy Marshal. This series will harken back to the Post-Reconstruction era, in which Bass Reeves became a notorious frontier hero by capturing thousands of the most frightening criminals in the land. Oyelowo will be accompanied by Dennis Quaid, Garrett Hedlund, and Donald Sutherland.

8. Big Mouth (Netflix)

BIG
NETFLIX

The seventh season of Big Mouth ties Orange is the New Black and Grace and Frankie as Netflix’s longest-running scripted series (it will break the record in its eighth and final season). Not bad for an animated show about horny teenagers and hormone monsters. Guest stars this season include Megan Thee Stallion, Lupita Nyong’o, and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda as a pubic hair. Good show.

Watch it on Netflix

7. Monarch: A Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV+)

MONARCH
APPLE

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters stars Kurt Russell and Godzilla and… are you already sold? You should be. The first live-action TV show in the MonsterVerse — which also includes Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong — makes you care as much about the humans, including Kurt and his son Wyatt, as Godzilla and his “Titan” friends. In an up-and-down year for genre shows, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a highlight.

6. The Curse (Paramount Plus)

The Curse Nathan Fielder Emma Stone
Showtime

There are cringe comedies and then there’s Showtime’s The Curse, a limited series about a married pair of alt-HGTV home flippers gentrifying their New Mexico neighborhood via eco-friendly monstrosities and calling it philanthropy. Created by two masters of squirm – Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder – the show is a voyeuristic exercise that tests fans’ capacity for second-hand embarrassment as its main characters, the affluent Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (a shockingly unlikable Emma Stone) bulldoze the soul of their small, impoverished community with just a few reality TV cameras and a staggering amount of white privilege. It’s the best, most uncomfortable TV show you’ll watch this year.

Mike Flanagan fans, get ready. The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass showrunner is back along with Carla Gugino, who will spook your soul right out of your bod and deliver a “consequential” evening to “a collection of stunted hearts” that is the Usher family. Yikes. Do not expect a literal adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe short story. The story focuses here on the hell created by ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, who built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. Horrible secrets shall surface when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman, portrayed with glee by Gugino.

Somehow, Joel Kinnaman has now been physically transformed to barely look like Joel Kinnaman while still starring in this alternate-history space-race series, and in the year 2003, the Earth’s nations are competing like hell to capture and mine asteroids full of precious minerals. That doesn’t sound ominous at all, and of course, there’s still plenty of beefing between nations after Happy Valley has grown in size on Mars’ surface.

One of the lucky participants will be not-so-lucky and end up dead, and at that point, Darby must use her amateur-sleuth abilities (including hacking and being a typically astute Gen Z-er) to solve the case before anyone else ends up dead. From the official description: “Solitary, cold, methodical and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, a killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target. Yet, the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool.” Jokes aside, Fincher does these kinds of movies as well as anyone and usually makes them compelling, so give it a go if you want to spend a few hours with a murderous sociopath in the safest possible way.
