Doja Cat’s Fearless ‘Vie’ Poses A Big Question: What Is Pop?

doja cat 1024
Getty Images/Derrick Rossignol

Over the course of the past seven years since she first exploded into stardom with “Mooo!,” Doja Cat has proven to be a musical chameleon, equally willing to dive into bluesy R&B as she is aggressive battle rap. Yet with her new album, Vie, she insists she’s making a pop album. If that’s true, though, her effort warrants a look at one of the biggest questions facing modern musical discourse: Just what the hell is pop music in the first place?

For years, the answer has appeared to be: Black music with a white face. This isn’t exactly a shocking revelation. It’s a major plot point in Dreamgirls, it’s the argument that has cropped up again and again with each subsequent generation of “transgressive” hyper-sexy pop stars — the Madonnas, the Britneys, the Xtinas, the Arianas, the Mileys, the Taylors, and Justins Timberlake and Bieber. It’s even jumped entire oceans, as we now debate the merits of Koreans appropriating Black culture through their own maximalist lens.

Doja’s very existence, though, throws a kink in the narrative. The daughter of a white Jewish graphic designer and a South African actor and dancer, Doja has unwillingly become emblematic of the friction inherent to the entire pop music category. From the outset, her rap chops have been questioned. She herself maligned many of her fan-favorite works like “Say So” and “Kiss Me More” while on the campaign for Scarlet, her defiant attempt to wrestle control of the narrative away from chronically online fans’ conspiracy-cooked noodles.

Everything from Doja’s vocal talents to her very Blackness has been dissected and debated by the very fans who first elevated her, then turned on her when she embraced her own self-conception as “a rapper who makes pop.” So, who better to throw up a mirror and force those same fans to confront the origins of the sounds they reduce to mere background music? Vie doesn’t exactly set out to do this; By all means, Doja and producer Jack Antonoff seem to be paying respectful homage to Doja’s musical influences. But in doing so, the album highlights the folly of classifying music by color in the first place.

The overarching sound of the album is the funk-based offshoot of 1980s R&B that was, according to music historian Dan Charnas, never accorded an official title by the recording establishment powers that be. Alternatively described as electro, roller disco, synth funk, or even boogie, it’s the sound that you heard all over in the 1980s — at least, if you grew up Black in the inner city (or with parents that did, such as those of us who heard these records booming from car stereos in cities like Los Angeles, Detroit, Minnesota, and more).

It was the sound defined by Kashif, as pioneered by Prince’s work with The Time, codified in songs like George Benson’s “Give Me The Night.” Cameo and Zapp, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Cheryl Lyn, D Train, Carl Carlton, and others crafted songs with both swing and soul, heavy bass, brash drums, and blaring saxophones embellishing synthesized melodies throughout the decade, but radio programmers couldn’t get with the sounds of so-called “race records” — or just “Black music” — in the wave of a backlash against “disco” (a reminder here that Chicago’s infamous Disco Demolition Night saw white fans bring records to destroy that that didn’t strictly fit the event’s description).

And so, we saw those sounds filter out into more palatable avenues, into more modern works like Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” and later, Mars’ own 24K Magic and Silk Sonic project with Anderson .Paak. With Vie, Doja thoroughly revitalizes the sound and recaptures ownership of it. What would have been classified as R&B a decade or so ago and wouldn’t even have made it on radio playlists in the decade the sounds were minted are redefined as “pop” music via a rapper who was derided as a pop star, whose pop bona fides were questioned when she turned back to rap.

In explaining her album title, she said, “I feel strongly about the meaning of the word ‘vie,’ because without life, there is no love, and without love, there is no adventure. This is an adventurous album, with homages and nods to the ’80s, ’70s, and ’90s, I wanted to give my own personal modern twist.”

So, hearing those post-funk chants on “Aaahh Men!” or those chunky bass licks on “Take Me Dancing” featuring SZA means more than just a good beat to dance to. The digitized 808s on “Happy” and the swinging snare on “Jealous Type” are smoke signals to the ancestors, to the ones who never got their credit or the recognition. Doja is using her pop star status to shine a light backwards, to show her fans where it all comes from and what it actually means.

Vie is out now via RCA Records. Find more information here.

Magdalena Bay Drop A Pair Of New Songs, Their First Of 2025, Just Before Kicking Off A Tour

Magdalena Bay had one of the best albums of 2024 with Imaginal Disk. (It ranked pretty high on the Uproxx Music Critics Poll.) As the album-making process goes, some tracks didn’t end up making the cut. But, the duo liked a couple of them enough to give them a proper release: Today (September 26), they shared “Second Sleep” and “Star Eyes,” which were made during the end of the album sessions.

In a statement, the band says of the songs, “‘Second Sleep’ and ‘Star Eyes’ are two songs we made around the end of Imaginal Disk — both a sort of spiritual successor to the album’s mood and emotional arc. We like how they complement each other, so here they are as a pair.”

This comes shortly after Magdalena Bay revealed they’re working on a full movie for Imaginal Disk.

Shaboozey Goes Deep On His Love For Jack Daniel’s And All Things Whiskey With Our Head Drinks Writer

Images_Shaboozey_Jack Daniels_1024x450
Carlos Sotelo/Jack Daniel’s

Shaboozey and Jack Daniel’s have a history.

You’ve definitely heard him singing about that history on one of the biggest songs ever, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” which spent a record-tying 19-weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now in an exclusive interview with Uproxx, Shaboozey took a moment to talk about his relationship with Jack Daniel’s, his preferred way of enjoying whiskey (sometimes the drink does need a mix), and the one person in the world he wants to sit down and have a drink with.

Check out the full interview below, which was edited for clarity.

Also Read: The Top 5 UPROXX Whiskey Posts

First of all, it’s such a pleasure to sit down and chat with you. Do you remember the first time that you had Jack Daniel’s Whiskey?

It’s a great question, but probably not. I’ve spent too many nights drinking it at this point, but I definitely remember going over to the distillery in Tennessee for the first time, and trying out a lot of different (Jack Daniel’s) whiskeys, and learning how they’re made. It was really cool to have that experience. I felt like, honestly, I hadn’t really tried whiskey until that experience, man. They really know how to make it special over there.

So what’s your favorite way to enjoy whiskey? Do you like cocktails? Do you like it on the rocks? Or is it true that the “Drink Don’t Need No Mix”, and you just drink it straight up?

(Laughs) It really just depends, you know? I’m definitely an old-fashioned guy, and I definitely like mixed drinks. I also enjoy a clean drink, either straight or nice and chilled with a big ol’ ice cube, to enjoy that with my friends. It really depends on how I’m feeling and the type of mood I’m in.

Does whiskey inspire your songwriting in any way, and are there ever times when you have it with you in the studio?

Yeah, for sure. I mean, man, I’ve got, like, 300 cases of Jack Daniel’s in the studio, that I usually hand out to friends, and different people in the industry that I meet along the way. I definitely will have it around, and I think it’s just been a staple of country music. You probably won’t hear a country song without a mention of whiskey, so it’s one of those things that’s just in the brains of every country writer; it’s in our vocabulary, so it definitely inspires a lot of tunes.

I’ve definitely noticed that. And I’m curious, do you feel like listening to country music inspired you to want to drink more whiskey, or does whiskey make you want to listen to more country music?

I think it’s both (laughs). They go hand in hand. No pun intended, but I 100% believe they go hand in hand.

What is it about whiskey that you enjoy the most? Is it the feeling? Is it the experience of being with friends and loved ones when you drink? Or is it the flavor that you taste?

I think it’s the flavor, and the way it makes you feel like yourself, if that makes sense, you know? It just reminds you to slow down and enjoy the moment, honestly. I know a lot of songs encourage you to just take a shot of whiskey, but it’s definitely one of those things that’s meant to be enjoyed and experienced rather than just drinking it to party hard. In those moments (when enjoying a drink), it just shows me to slow down, take it all in, and just be.

You mentioned how you have a lot of whiskey at home. Do you personally try to find new and exclusive whiskeys, or do you stick to the classics?

I’m open-minded. I’m open to different kinds, because Brown-Forman has a lot of really great ones that they’ve also put me onto. But the classics: Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve, those are the go-tos.

Finally, I have a two-part question. First, who’s the one person in the world that you would love to have a drink with? And second, who’s the one person that you already love sharing a drink with?

That’s another great question (laughs), I would say Denzel, man. Denzel Washington. I feel like he probably enjoys a nice Old-Fashioned, or just a strong drink, you know what I mean? He’s someone I would definitely like to sit up at a bar with, have a conversation, and enjoy a glass of Jack Daniel’s.

And right now…my friends, honestly. My friends weren’t huge whiskey drinkers back in the day, so it’s really cool just to see how much they’ve come to love and enjoy it, and how it’s been a part of some of our most memorable times.

Shaboozey’s “The Great American Roadshow” Tour just kicked off on September 22nd, and you can check out all of the tour dates here.

Khalid Has An ‘Out Of Body’ Experience In His Steamy New Video

Ever since he was outed last year, Khalid has embraced a new musical direction that has allowed him to live as his full self. As seen in the video for “In Plain Sight” and his newly released single, “Out Of Body,” Khalid is going for a more club-friendly vibe lately; where prior projects leaned on moody R&B and hip-hop, his newer songs are going with Y2K-inspired pop-R&B production, complete with hooky synths inspired by The Neptunes and Darkchild, Rodney Jenkins.

That extends to the videos themselves too. In “Out Of Body,” Khalid goes borderline Britney Spears, popping his hips like the Pussycat Dolls along with his team of backup dancers. Everything from the wardrobes to the film filter just screams “Xtina, etc.,” and you know what? We love this for him. “Out Of Body” brings back a style of music that fell out of favor as trap music took over the world, but everything comes back around, and Khalid might just be the perfect person to shepherd the resurgence of the TRL pop vibes.

“Out Of Body” and “In Plain Sight” will both appear on his new album, After The Sun Goes Down which he announced in August and drops next month.

Young Thug And Metro Boomin Mask Up In The Gritty ‘F*cking Told U’ Video

Young Thug is back. The ATL word twister has released his new album Uy Scuti today after pushing it back for labelmate Cardi B, and with it comes the gritty video for focus track “F*cking Told U.”

The video adopts a high-low aesthetic, pairing fashion models in stylized couture posing and catwalking their way through grimy locations like an abandoned warehouse and roadside motel. Producer Metro Boomin appears alongside Thugger, with both men donning fascinating masks as they lounge around the women, watching them strut and mug the camera.

Uy Scuti is Thug’s first album since being released from Fulton County Men’s Jail last year, and the first album he’s been able to properly promote since 2021’s Punk. He released Business Is Business during his incarceration, but was unable to full participate in its creation or release cycle, prompting the creation of two different versions of the album, one directed by Metro himself.

The album finds Thug reuniting with nearly all his favorite collaborators, including 21 Savage, Future, Lil Baby, T.I., and Travis Scott, but there are a few new names added to the mix. They include Cardi B (possibly explaining that album delay), breakout artist Ken Carson, Thug’s girlfriend Mariah The Scientist, and, most unexpectedly, his onetime rival YFN Lucci, with whom he collaborates on “Whaddup.” Notably absent is Gunna, with whom Thug fell out over Gunna’s willingness to accept an Alford plea in exchange for his release from jail, nearly a year before Thug himself accepted a similar deal.

You can watch Young Thug’s “F*cking Told U” video above.

Uy Scuti is out now via 300 Entertainment / Atlantic Recording Corporation. You can find more info here.

Doja Cat Cosmetic Commercial-Inspired ‘Gorgeous’ Video Gives Old-School Glam

Doja Cat continues her mission to make her haters mad with the video for “Gorgeous” from her newly released album, Vie. Inspired by cosmetics ads, the video pairs Doja with some of the hottest models currently working the high-fashion scene. Cameos include Sora Choi, Alex Consani, Paloma Elsesser, Karen Elson, Amelia Gray, Imaan Hammam, Ida Heiner, Irina Shayk, Mona Tougaard, Ugbad, and Yseult, according to the press release for the song. They’re all dolled up in old-school glam, mugging for the camera as Doja delivers her ode to the old adage, “pretty hurts.”

“If they wasn’t grillin’ before / They gon’ be really mad when we hit the floor / It’s a crime to be gorgeous,” Doja declares on the sugary hook. But in her verse, she lays out the sacrifices it takes to look so good: “Pretty hurts, don’t talk to me ’bout Brazilians / After that wax, you thought you wanted to kill him / But now you walkin’ ’round like you one in a million / He lookin’ at me like he want some beautiful children.”

The song is certainly a kiss-off to Doja’s biggest critics, who have often criticized her for the way she looks, and her own relationship to her self-image. It sounds like she’s in a good place, and perfectly okay with ignoring the judgments of haters with too much time on their hands.

Doja teased “Gorgeous” ahead of the release of Vie, which also contains previously released single “Jealous Type.” The album is out now via RCA Records. You can find more info here and watch the “Gorgeous” video above.
