‘Suicide Squad’ Filmmaker David Ayer Thinks Comic Book Movie Fans Need To Learn How To ‘Chill’ Already

Margot Robbie Harley Quinn Suicide Squad David Ayer

The first Suicide Squad movie may have been a hit, but that doesn’t mean it has a good rep. Indeed, its director, David Ayer, has only now been okay with opening up about what was clear to many: that the movie was taken away from him and softened, its rough edges sanded down for a more populist vibe. Recently it was reported that James Gunn, one of the DCEU’s new honchos, was going to release Ayer’s original, nastier cut. Not that that mollified some comic book movie die hards.

As caught by The AV Club, one fan expressed skepticism that Gunn would do the right thing, claiming that Ayer “really fell for” his “lie.” The person even tagged Ayer. Well, Ayer noticed and added his two cents.

“I absolutely can’t wait to see Gunn’s Superman,” Ayer’s tweet began. “I have to say this. Gunn is the bravest man in Hollywood these days. He’s taking charge of the hardest ship to Captain in this industry.”

Ayer added, “We make movies. We are entertainers. Not elected officials leading a nation. Everyone please chill.”

The comic book movie genre has long been a haven for, to put it mildly, passionate enthusiasts. Just ask Martin Scorsese. But when even a filmmaker like Ayer, who makes some of the most serious and intense entertainments out there, is asking you to take it down a notch, maybe it’s time to listen.

‘All American’ Season 6: Everything We Know So Far Including The Release Date, Trailer & More

'All American' 520 Spencer Asher JJ Jordan
CW

Time flies doesn’t it? Today marks six months since All American concluded a hectic fifth season. Throughout the season’s 20 episodes, we watch Spencer navigate his romantic relationships through a journey that eventually brought him back to Olivia. Asher and Jaymee take steps toward parenthood while Jordan and Olivia bring their relationship to a new level — they’re engaged! — while embarking on an independent chapter in their respective careers. Oh, and let’s not forget Coach Baker’s tragic death during the season. So much happened during the season and you can expect just as much drama in season six. So, with that being said, let’s see what we can expect in season six.

Release Date

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, CW is aiming for an April 2024 premiere date for the sixth season of All American. Production for the season was paused due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and it led to a delay for both All American and All American: Homecoming. Now, that both strikes are over, production for both can resume.

Cast

Most of the cast from season five of All American, outside of Taye Diggs as Coach Baker, is expected to return for season six. New members for the upcoming season have yet to be announced. With that being said, the season six will include Daniel Ezra as Spencer James, Bre-Z as Tamia “Coop” Cooper, Greta Onieogou as Layla Keating, Samantha Logan as Olivia Baker, Michael Evans Behling as Jordan Baker, Cody Christian as Asher Adams, Karimah Westbrook as Grace James, Monét Mazur as Laura Fine-Baker, Jalyn Hall as Dillon James, Chelsea Tavares as Patience Robinson, Hunter Clowdus as JJ Parker, Mitchell Edwards as Cam Watkins, Simeon Daise as Jabari Long, Miya Horcher as Jaymee, and Morris Chestnut as Rick Barnes.

Plot

An official synopsis for the sixth season of All American has not been revealed yet, but there will be plenty of drama to pick up on to start the new season. In the season five finale, Patience was stabbed in the Baker house by her stalker Miko after setting a boundary between them in the season’s final moments. The incident occurred as it appeared that Coop was on the way to the Baker house to confess her ever-present love for Patience.

That wasn’t the only confessional moment that happened in the episode. Moments before Olivia boarded her plane for a trip to London, Spencer stopped her and poured his heart out to her after Jordan reminded him how short life can be. Luckily for Spencer, Olivia shared the same feelings, so much so that she considered not boarding her flight to London. Spencer refused to let her do that and promised that he’d be home waiting for her when she returned.

We’ll also see Jordan and Olivia take a step toward tying the knot in season six! The two got engaged in the season five finale, with Jordan giving Olivia a ring that caused some drama at the boys’ beach house. Jaymee stumbled upon the ring and assumed Asher got it for her. It sent her into a bit of a spiral as she’s completely against marriage because she views it as archaic. After telling Asher that she saw the ring, Asher revealed that it not only wasn’t his, but he added some good news on top of it: he and Jaymee are having a boy!

As I said, there’s a whole lot of drama to pick up on in season six.

Jeff Teague Had An Incredible Explanation For The Time He Shoved LeBron Into The Crowd: ‘I’m A Sore Loser’

jeff teague
YouTube/Club 520 Podcast

Draymond Green throwing Rudy Gobert in a sleeper hold and earning a 5-game suspension for it became the talking point around the NBA, as players, fans, and even SNL all had something to say about what did and didn’t happen in the scuffle between the Warriors and Wolves.

The player perspective on those types of things is always the most interesting to me, particularly because there’s not really a unified belief among current and former players about how those types of fights should go, and we saw that across the various player podcasts this week. Patrick Beverley got mad about Karl-Anthony Towns not jumping in and choking Draymond back, while Paul George noted that star players have to toe a certain line because they can’t risk getting ejected or suspended and costing their team a game in that situation.

On Jeff Teague’s Club 520 Podcast, his co-host Bishop had a different question he wanted an answer for: Why are NBA players like this? When Teague asked who he was talking about he brought up Jeff shoving LeBron James into the stands at the end of a Hawks-Cavs playoff game back in 2016, which led to a very funny answer from Teague.

As Teague notes, he never won a playoff game against LeBron, who regularly tortured the Hawks (along with pretty much every team in the East) for nearly a decade and rather famously snuffed out the best team Atlanta’s had in 2015. Not only that, but as Teague points out, the crowd in Atlanta was often very pro-LeBron — or at least vocally so — meaning they also had to hear the cheers for James beating them in their home building. That pent up frustration manifested itself in a shoulder check that forced Teague to delete his Instagram because of the hate mail he got. He also went on to note his misfortune running into LeBron in the playoffs continued with the Pacers and that once he finally went to the Western Conference, so did James.

Teague is one of the best storytellers in NBA podcasting and is able to make just about anything funny, including IG death threats for shoving LeBron into the crowd.

John Oliver Took Aim At Dollar Stores On ‘Last Week Tonight’ (And Sideswiped Apple TV+ In The Process)

Bird enthusiast John Oliver has never been afraid to drag Max, his awkwardly-named streaming home. But on the most recent Last Week Tonight he decided to go after the competition. The episode’s main focus was on dollar stores, which — surprise! — are riddled with all kinds of semi-secret foundational problems. But at one point he decided to do a quick but deadly sideswipe on the streamer that’s easiest to forget about: Apple TV.

At one point during the dollar store segment, Oliver dwelled on poor working conditions, highlighting a story about one worker who was ordered to reopen a store soon after it had been robbed, leaving her little time to recoup.

“An armed robbery is a traumatic event people need time to recover from,” Oliver said. “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken light bulb or any show on Apple TV.”

He then dwelled on Apple TV a little longer, digging up a show that hasn’t generated a ton of chatter.

“Did you know Octavia Spencer starred as a true crime podcaster on a show called Truth Be Told for three seasons?” Oliver asked. “Of course you didn’t. It’s Apple TV, where celebrities go to hide.”

Truth Be Told was cancelled earlier this year after three seasons, despite some big names attached. Its first season also starred Aaron Paul and Lizzy Caplan. Others who appeared included Elizabeth Perkins, Michael Beach, Mekhi Phifer, and Gabrielle Union.

Was Oliver’s assessment a little harsh? Maybe. Apple TV does have some major shows, including The Morning Show and especially Ted Lasso. Recently the streamer parted ways with Oliver’s old Daily Show compadre, Jon Stewart, whose current affairs show ran for two seasons and made plenty of news.

You can watch Oliver’s dollar store segment above. The Apple TV business begins around the 14-minute mark.

‘F*ck My Life’: Antony Starr Did *Not* Seem To Enjoy That Sky-High Stunt Work Before His ‘Gen V’ Landing

The Boys Homelander
Amazon

The Gen V season finale included a villainously pleasant visit from Antony Starr’s Homelander, who did so much in less than one minute while stealing the show. That was always the danger with bringing The Boys‘ baddest supe onboard, but it worked incredibly well with the final minutes of this Gen V season.

Again, Starr was onscreen for slightly less than a minute, but of course, there’s always much more work behind the scenes, and in this case, that meant Homelander being hoisted high into the air before coming in for a landing. Wait, Starr has done this before, right? Actually, someone is heard in the background of the below clip remarking, “He normally just lands.” So, this was a different plan than usual, perhaps because Homelander descended amid off-kilter patriotic music, and he needed to really make an entrance.

Whatever the case, Starr did not enjoy dangling so far above solid ground. Here’s how he narrated the experience:

“Hahahaha, f*ck off.

“Haha, f*ck off.

“Ahhhhhhh.

“Fffffff….

“F*ck my life.

“F*ck this.

“F*ck off.

“F*cking c*nts.

“Holy sh*t. Okay, please. That’s good.”

[Deep breathing]

Now, here he goes into the sky. Yikes…

Not fun! Not only that, but as showrunner Eric Kripke revealed, Starr actually did this cameo on his day off from shooting The Boys Season 4 and without any additional pay. In other words, I’m standing by my previous statement: “Whatever the guy is receiving for a paycheck, it isn’t enough.”

Gen V‘s first season and The Boys first three seasons are currently streaming on Amazon.

Paul George Shouted Out Russell Westbrook For Making A Move To The Bench

harden westbrook george

After losing six straight games since making the trade for James Harden, the Clippers finally got back into the win column over the weekend with a 106-100 win over the Rockets. That game featured some late Harden heroics, but it also saw Russell Westbrook make a move to the bench in an effort to create a bit more balance for the starting lineup.

It had become pretty clear that they had a spacing issue with four players that want the ball in their hands, and Westbrook is the one who doesn’t pose much of a threat as a spot-up shooter. While all of their former All-Stars are trying to adapt to a new role, Westbrook volunteered himself to move to the bench in a move that most everyone saw as necessary, but no one was quite sure if there would be someone (Harden or Westbrook) willing to make that move. Given how much Westbrook bristled at the idea of being a bench player with the Lakers a couple years ago, it’s quite the shift in perspective from him and signals how much he genuinely cares about trying to make this Clippers squad work to the best of its abilities — there is also the fact that playing with the bench means he’s far more likely to have the ball in his hands, so it’s not a completely selfless act, but it still is meaningful.

Paul George recognizes that and decided to open this week’s episode of Podcast P with a quick addendum that features George shouting out Russ for his willingness to sacrifice and talking about how vibes picked up after finally getting a win under their belts, as the full episode was recorded prior to to Saturday night’s win.

“[Russ] was the heart and soul for us last year,” George says. “Energy, leader, and I think Clipper nation came to love what he brought to the team. For us to go through this stretch of not winning and not knowing how to win with this squad yet, for him to take the initiative and be like, ‘You know what I’ll sacrifice and I’ll try to make this work and come off the bench,’ it just says a lot about him, bro. He never ceases to amaze me, as long as I’ve played on the same teams with him and as much as I’ve known him. Every day it’s something new. Shout out to him, man. That’s not an easy decision to make, especially when you still have so much game and value to this league and just for us.”

George goes on to talk about how all four of the Clippers stars are enjoying the challenge and process of trying to figure this out, even amid the losing streak. Things still aren’t perfect and they need to figure out how to keep things flowing on offense better than they have, but the good news for L.A. is they should have a good chance of turning this into a winning streak with back-to-back games in San Antonio against the scuffling Spurs.
