‘The Marvels’ Are A Fun Team But The Plot Doesn’t Do Them Many Favors

The Marvels
Marvel

When early reports on a movie come out about endless reshoots and then director Nia DaCosta at least appears to distance herself from the movie by saying, “It is a Kevin Feige production, it’s his movie” – then add in The Marvels didn’t screen until two days before its release for anybody; which is unheard of for an MCU movie that’s not a huge spoiler-filled movie like Endgame – it does tend to lower expectations. So while watching The Marvels, I was pleasantly surprised that the dynamic between Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan does work. Or, at the very least, is willed together by the sheer force of Vellani’s endless enthusiasm.

(The MCU Disney+ shows have gotten a bad reputation lately for “diluting the brand” or whatever, and maybe that’s true, but as I wrote before, Ms. Marvel was really good.)

The problem with The Marvels is just the story itself. The plot, which focuses on the continuing and never-ending war between the Kree and Skrulls, is so borderline indecipherable at times, even though they keep trying to explain it multiple times, I truly was questioning if I missed three or four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies somehow. (I haven’t.) It feels like a movie that’s missing a good 30 minutes and, in fact, at a brisk 105 minutes – the shortest MCU movie to date – I’m sure it is missing 30 minutes. And keep in mind, that 105 minutes includes the credits. Anyway, I will do my best to explain the plot of this movie.

Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan all keep switching places with each other when they use their powers. Again, why this happens is explained multiple times and it’s never truly clear why – it has something to do with space portals – but whatever, it does lead to some funny scenes. As this is happening, a Kree warrior named Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) is searching for a mysterious bangle that will allow her to manipulate these space portals (I think?) – a bangle that matches the one that Kamala Khan uses.

Dar-Benn’s motivation is her home world of Hala has been decimated of natural resources like air and water — and also their sun is dying. Dar-Benn is using the space portals to steal resources from planets that have those resources. So she uses the bangle to open a portal above a water planet, suck all the water out, then splash it all down on Hala. Eventually, Dar-Benn comes for Earth’s sun. Now, Dar-Benn blames Carol Danvers for the Kree’s troubles – referring to Danvers’ Captain Marvel as “The Annihilator” – and, for her part, Carol agrees that she screwed up and destroyed their planet by destroying the artificial intelligence that ran Hala during the events of the first film.

Now, this is an interesting concept that Carol Danvers might actually be the villain here, but the whole concept is never played out fully and pretty much forgotten by the end of the movie as everything is wrapped up quickly and in a way too tidy way*. I can’t help but wonder if this was something that DaCosta wanted to explore further and wasn’t allowed because, well, Captain Marvel certainly can’t be the villain.

(*Without getting into too many details, there’s a part near the end of this movie when Carol is literally told, oh, that whole thing you feel bad about and the reason the villain exists in this movie … you know with your powers you can just fix that right? And, as an afterthought, she does it with no repercussions.)

Samuel L. Jackson is back as Nick Fury in his first MCU movie since Spider-Man: Far From Home (he was also in the Disney+ show Secret Invasion) and really doesn’t have a whole lot to do here. His primary function seems to be relegated to checking on the team from time to time and taking care of Kamala’s family who, for some reason, he brings up to his top secret space station. I understand, for comedy’s sake, it’s better to have all these characters together, but narratively it makes absolutely no sense.

There’s a scene in the middle of The Marvels where it starts to get pretty weird and interesting as our trio of heroes travel to the aforementioned water planet. It’s a planet where the locals only speak while singing. To communicate with them, Carol has to sing a song to warn them of the upcoming Kree invasion. See, this is pretty fun! But this is also where it feels like a lot was cut out to keep the movie moving along because we get on and off of that planet pretty quickly. Actually, again, the whole movie feels like that. It truly feels like a decision was made, “Let’s just get in and out of this thing as quickly as humanly possible and get to the mid-credit scene so we can start our new thing.” Which makes The Marvels feel like a movie that only really exists as a way to get to that mid-credit scene. (I will not spoil what it is but I’m sure a quick search of social media will fill you in.)

Even though there are some fun scenes with The Marvels trio, I’d be hard-pressed to recommend this to anyone who isn’t an MCU superfan. Again, even *I* was a bit lost with the latest in the Kree and Skrull political relationships — I felt lost by it all and I’ve seen every movie. I bet a pretty straightforward plot involving the main three characters would have gone a long way. Or, on the other hand, really diving into this whole “The Annihilator” side of Carol Danvers’ history would have also been interesting, but it goes nowhere. Instead, we are left with a movie that seems to only exist for a scene that happens after you watch three minutes of credits.

‘The Marvels’ opens in theaters everywhere this week. You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter.

When Is ‘Taylor Swift Night’ On ‘Dancing With The Stars?’

taylor swift
Getty Image

On November 20, Swifties will be tuning into ABC to see if “Is It Over Now?” singer Taylor Swift makes a surprise appearance at her rumored boyfriend, Travis Kelce’s away game. Due to the continuation of Swift’s The Eras Tour abroad, that is highly unlikely. But let’s be honest, the devoted fan base would much rather enjoy the music from the entertainment titan.

It is that outpouring of support that ABC executives hope will bring in eyes for Taylor Swift Night on Dancing With The Stars. So, when exactly is Taylor Swift Night on Dancing With The Stars? According to Variety, the special event is set to take place on Tuesday, November 21. Competitors will be assigned one of Swift’s hit songs to perform original choreography during that broadcast.

While the costuming should be a piece of cake, given the oodles of fan-curated looks shared online from the recording-grossing tour, sharpening the dance moves is something else entirely. To ensure it meets Swift’s standards, the show will bring in the tour’s lead choreographer, Mandy Moore, as a special guest judge.

This isn’t the first time Swift’s music has been featured on the show. Swift herself has made several guest cameos, including on Seasons 9 (in 2009), 11 (in 2010), and 15 (in 2012).

ABC airs Dancing with The Stars on Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. Eastern. Find more information here.

‘House Of The Dragon’: Everything To Know About Season 2

House of the Dragon
HBO

House of the Dragon was a roaring and fiery hit, to say the very least.

That is to say, any worries about the prequel series after the disappointing final Game of Thrones season were quickly dashed. Viewers tuned into the series premiere to such a degree that entire NYC buildings lit up during the live HBO broadcast, and HBO Max servers swiftly and repeatedly crashed. Those numbers held strong all season, and HBO did not hesitate to greenlight Season 2, so we can see the Targaryen house continue to slide further down the towers of King’s Landing and Dragonstone into oblivion. Presumably?

Near extinction is where the house sits at the beginning of Game of Thrones, and the first HotD season got all the time-jump and casting shakeups out of the way. Now, we should be able to look forward to approximately three more seasons of the doom sliding, but what can we expect for Season 2?

Plot

The below image paints a vivid picture of how f*cked up that Team Green move turned out in the Season 1 finale.

House of the Dragon Vhagar
HBO

Vhagar’s hangry face sets everything back in motion, and Aemond screwed up by trying to scare Luke (and Arrax) with a dragon that Aemond clearly cannot control. As a result, Rhaenyra’s revenge face did not bode well for departure from the George R.R. Martin source material (the Fire and Blood book) with a quick reconciliation. Nope, Team Black (along with House Velaryon dominating the seas) will go to war against Team Green/the Hightower bunch beginning with Season 2, Episode 1, aptly titled “A Son For A Son.”

Surely, that doesn’t mean that we will be saying goodbye to Aemond so soon? Ewan Mitchell is highly amusing in this role, especially while prompting many giggles as Aemond strives to be just like his Uncle Daemon. I suspect that the episode title could actually be a reference to when Aemond lost his eye and later wanted to take a Targaryen peeper in return. And unfortunately, he did much more than that to Luke.

However, what we do know for sure is that the Dance of the Dragons shall commence. This will be a contentious and highly deadly war, especially after Team Black and Team Green both crowned their own monarchs (Rhaenyra and Aegon II, respectively). If we’re going on sheer leadership ability so far, then Team Black should have had this in the bag. Yet due to Alicent “misunderstanding” King Viserys’ dying words, Aegon now has a shot at ruining the kingdom because he has zero leadership skills and didn’t even want to be king until he received obligatory cheers.

How does Daemon figure into this power play? He was behaving himself at the end of Season 1, but that cannot last for long. What will last for awhile, however, are the Season 2 episodes, which will regularly run more than one hour in length. We should see plenty of dragon fights from the Hightowers and Targaryens along with sea-level action from the Velaryon bunch. As well, Vhagar might be the biggest and oldest dragon, yet that might not matter much for Team Green since Aemond isn’t a very skilled dragon rider.

Cast

The adult versions of this series’ main characters shall return for Season 2. That means Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) will be at odds again, along with Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen) and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen). Original returning actors include Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen), Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria/that White Worm), Steve Toussaint (Corlys “Sea Snake” Valaryon), Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole the terrible), and Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower). Unless we see Viserys’ ghost (RIP) return for a cameo, we won’t be seeing Paddy Considine.

Oh, and don’t forget all of the dragons we’ve met so far (RIP to Arrax, too), along with a few new additions.

Release Date

Summer 2024, baby! Fortunately, the show was not affected by either the WGA or SAG-AFTRA strikes because scripts were already finished when filming began, and the production takes place in Europe. A two-year turnaround ain’t bad, especially considering the more glacial pace of Game of Thrones‘ later seasons, for such a sizable and CGI-accented production.

Trailer

No trailers exist as of yet, but you had better believe that when one drops, we will be all over it here.

HBO’s first ‘House of the Dragon’ season can currently be streamed on Max.
