Here’s What To Expect At Apple’s ‘Scary Fast’ Special Event

Last week, Apple announced a special keynote event on October 30 titled “Scary Fast.” It comes one month after Apple held a keynote for their iPhone 15 models and six months since their latest WWDC. One glance at the calendar and a history check and it becomes clear what this keynote could be about. Over the last five years, Apple has held keynote events in October on three occasions — in 2018, 2020, and 2021. The 2018 and 2021 October keynotes were used to announce new MacBooks among other items. The October 2020 keynotes was used to announce new iPhones and the HomePod mini. The following month, a special event was held to announce the M1 chip.

Keeping that in mind, it’s also not out of the ordinary that a keynote event is held a month after a previous one. Apple’s iPhone events are usually in September, so an October event in relation to MacBook and/or a new chip should be expected at this point. For 2023, it appears that something really special is on the way from Apple, and according to various reports, that is exactly what’s happening.

Here’s what we know about the event so far:

Apple Mac Takes Centerstage

On the Apple events page, the company revealed the keynote event will mostly be about the MacBook. The page shows the Apple logo animating into a version of the Apple Mac Finder window.

Scary Fast Is The M3 Chip?

Though the “Scary Fast” tagline is perfect for the Halloween season, it also seemingly alludes to the debut of the M3 chip. Most reports and analysts said M3 chips would not arrive until 2024, but with the announcement of the Scary Fast keynote event, it seems like the chips are on their way. According to Forbes, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo agrees. “I believe M3 series MacBook Pro will be Oct 30th media event’s focus,” she wrote in a post on X. “I previously predicted a launch this year is unlikely due to limited 4Q23 shipments (less than 400-500k units in total).”

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that there will be three new chips announced at the keynote: the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max.

The arrival of the M3 chip will not be confirmed until the keynote event, so we’ll just have to wait and see if this proves to be true.

New iMac & MacBook Pro

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that a new M3 iMac and a refresh of the high-end MacBook Pro models could be among the new products that debut at the Scary Fast event. A 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac are reportedly both set to receive the M3 chip in new models. Gurman also noted that the 13-inch MacBook Pro will not receive the M3 chip.

When Is Apple’s ‘Scary Fast’ Keynote Event?

The Scary Fast keynote event will take place on October 30 at 8pm EST/5pm PST, an unusual time for an Apple event. However, it fits with the spooky and scary theme so why not? Another thing that’s unusual to Apple standards is, unlike previous keynotes, this event will not be held in person at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. Instead, it will be an online-only showcase.

How To Watch Apple’s ‘Scary Fast’ Keynote Event?

The Scary Fast keynote will be available to watch on Apple’s website on October 30 at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

Steph Curry Clowned Dillon Brooks After Shaking Him Twice For A Dagger Three In Houston

After trailing by 10 at the half, the Rockets battled back to take a fourth quarter lead over the Warriors on Sunday night and it seemed like we might be headed for an exciting finish in Houston.

In a way we were, but not in the manner the home team was hoping for. Shortly after Houston took their first lead of the second half, the Warriors rattled off a 15-2 run that included four straight threes for Steph Curry, who had just 10 points in the game prior to his fourth quarter explosion.

The last of those threes was Steph at his absolute most diabolical, as he put poor Dillon Brooks in the blender multiple times, as Curry had the Rockets lead perimeter defender jumping all over the place trying to stay in front of him, as he twice tried to jump a screen Steph rejected and then flailed wildly on a Curry pump fake.

The reaction from Steph was priceless, as he ran down the court doing his best Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone — and held it well into the start of the next defensive possession. Just generally, there are few players opponents enjoy getting the best of more than Brooks, and he found himself trying to deal with Steph at the worst possible time — when he’s in the midst of an absolute heater. It was quite the show for the Houston crowd, and while it wasn’t what all of the Rockets fans in the building were hoping for when Houston took a fourth quarter lead, it was highly entertaining.

Here Are The New Features To Expect In iOS 17.2

Last week, Apple officially released iOS 17.1 for iPhone users. That update brought on new features like a new collection of ringtones and a favorites section in the Apple Music app. It also fixed issues regarding power consumption with the Apple Watch and radiation that had Apple in some trouble with France. Just a day after iOS 17.1 was released, Apple went ahead and shared iOS 17.2 beta 1 with developers and it gave a preview of some of the features that are on the way for iOS 17.2.

Here are the features and changes you should expect to see on your iPhone when the update for iOS 17.2 is officially released.

Beta 1

The Journal App Is Here

One of the biggest announcements for iOS 17 was a new Journal app that would allow users to safely and privately journal their thoughts and even receive prompts to do so. Apple called it an “all-new way to appreciate life’s moments and preserve your memories.” However, when iOS 17 and iOS 17.1 were released, the Journal app was nowhere to be found. Rumor had it that the app would be available on iOS 17.2 and thanks to iOS 17.2 beta 1, that has been confirmed as true.

Apple Music Updates

The Apple Music app received a couple of updates. The first is the addition of collaborative playlists which allows users to invite their friends and others to collaborate on playlists to add new songs, change the order, change the name, and more. The second is an addition to the “Favorite” feature brought on in iOS 17.1. Now, iOS 17.2 beta 1 brings on a “Favorites” playlist that automatically adds favorited songs into it.

Apple Music & Focus Filters Update

There is now an option to exclude any song played when a focus filter is activated from your Apple Music listening history and ensure that your data is not affected. Apple says a user can “choose if music played will influence recommendations and mixes, appear in Recently Played, or be shown to others on Apple Music.”

Stickers & Emojis As Message Reactions

With iOS 17.2 beta 1, you can now use stickers and emojis to react to any message. To do this, long-press a message and press the “add sticker” button. Like the Journal app, this first was announced at June’s WWDC, but not made available until iOS 17.2 beta 1.

Messages In iCloud Storage Update

The previous “Messages” section in the iCloud section within the Settings app has been renamed to “Messages in iCloud.” The total amount of storage that messages take up, the number of messages in iCloud, how long messages are kept before they are erased, and the time of the most recent sync can now be seen in this section. You can also trigger an iCloud sync in this section as well.

Memoji Update

There is now a new “body” section for Memoji that lets users customize their Memoji’s wait, bust, shoulders, and arms.

Contact Poster Update

A new option for rainbow-colored text for a user’s name can now be seen when setting up a Contact Poster in the Contacts app.

Contact Key Verification

Nearly a year after it was announced, Apple has finally brought Contact Key Verification to the iMessage app. Contact Key Verification allows iMessage users to “further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend.” Apple has said that the feature is mainly designed for those who may deal with “concerted threats to their online accounts.” This includes celebrities, journalists, and members of the government. It also ensures that there is no “man in the middle” snooping in on an iMessage conversation.

Translate Option On Action Button

This update is specifically for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users with the action button on their devices. They can now assign their action button to a new “translate” option. When this is assigned and the button is pressed, the iPhone will automatically begin a voice-to-text translation between two languages. This update was introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro models, but was not available until now.

New Weather & Clock App Widgets

There are three new widgets for the Weather app. A details widget shows the chance of precipitation, UV index, wind, and more. A daily forecast widget shows the current weather conditions and the daily forecast for a specific location. Lastly, a sunrise and sunset widget shows the information tied to the upcoming sunrise and sunset in a specific location.

As for the Clock app widget, there’s a new “clock digital” widget that shows the current time in a digital format rather than analog.

Apple TV App Update

Apple removed the separate tabs for movies and TV shows in the store section of the Apple TV app on both the iPhone and iPad. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurmna, Apple reportedly has plans to remove the option to purchase TV shows and movies from the iTunes app in connection to a future redesign of the Apple TV app. There is no plan on when that redesign will take effect.

Emergency Alerts Update

In the Notifications section of the Settings app, there is a new option in the Emergency Alerts portion. This option is titled “Local Awareness” and it can be turned on or off. Apple says that Local Awareness will “your approximate location to improve the timeliness, accuracy, and reliability of emergency alerts.”

News App Update

A new update in the News app provides support for Live Activities in relation to news events like elections.

Book Animation Update

The Books app has a new “fast fade” option for page-turning animation. The icon for the option that allowed users to scroll through content quickly was also removed.

AirPlay Update

In the Settings app under General, there is a new option that appears in the AirPlay & Handoff section. There, users will see a toggle for an “AirPlay Receiver” setting that will allow the upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset to stream and share content to an iPhone.

Nikola Jokic Thinks Chet Holmgren Is ‘Really Talented’ But ‘Needs To Be A Little Bit Fatter’

The Oklahoma City Thunder suffered their first loss of the young NBA season on Sunday afternoon, as the defending champs came to town and thumped them in a 128-95 Nuggets win.

Nikola Jokic led the way as he so often does with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists in his 30 minutes of action, while Chet Holmgren served as one of the few bright spots for the Thunder in the opposite frontcourt, scoring 19 points to lead OKC in scoring to continue his strong start to his first season on the floor. After the game, Jokic was asked about his young counterpart and offered him some praise as well as some advice that only Jokic would deliver, via Bennett Durando of the Denver Post.

“He’s a really talented guy, but this is his first year. He’s still learning everything: the game, how quick it is, where is (he at) an advantage, where is (he at) a disadvantage,” Jokic said. “I think he needs experience. I think he needs to be a little bit fatter, to be honest. But yes, he has a talent that is unique.”

Holmgren, who missed all of his rookie season with a foot injury, came into this season with a little bit more weight after a year in an NBA weight program, but the 7’1 big man is still quite thin. Jokic’s best advice is to maybe hit the buffet line as much as he’s hitting the free throw line, while also joking to Durando that when he was a rookie he didn’t have that problem.

I do like that Jokic isn’t talking about Chet getting in the weight room, just noting that he needs more beef in general. Jokic spent his early career going the other way with his weight, dropping pounds to go from a pudgy but talented center into being an unstoppable perennial MVP candidate. Holmgren has a tantalizing skillset of his own, but as Sunday showed, there’s still some matchups he needs to bolster his size to deal with and Jokic might have some tips on how to up that calorie count.

Kid’s outpouring of emotion meeting his baby brother for the first time has us wrecked

We’ve all seen our fair share of older-sibling-meets-new-baby videos, which are generally pretty darn adorable. But once in a while, one comes along that socks us square in the heart and has us desperately reaching for a tissue.

Brace yourselves, friends, because this is one video that truly requires a tissue warning.

Shared by @brianaarielle89 on TikTok, the video shows a preschooler dressed up in a dinosaur costume entering a hospital room to meet his newborn sibling for the first time. He asks, “Mommy, where is Hudson?” and is guided over to the cot where his baby brother is bundled.

At first, he walks right past him. But then he turns, sees him and simply stares for a few seconds.

A man’s voice asks, “What do you think?” and oh, the emotion in his little voice as he breaks into tears.

Hudsooooon!” he wails. “Hiiii!” And then he cries out the sweetest BFF declaration you’ll ever hear.

@brianaarielle89

Oof, right? This is the purest love there is. What a little sweetheart and what a lucky little brother Hudson is.

I regret to inform you that there is a part two, which is also adorable.

@brianaarielle89

#fyp #babiesoftiktok #brothers #feelings #happycry

“I’m happy crying, okay?” Okay, kiddo. So is everyone else now.

Of course, not all young children are overcome with happiness when they get to meet their younger siblings. In fact, some kids can be downright hostile about it, asking the parents if they can send the baby back or acting out in anger and jealousy. Depending on their age, older siblings might demand more attention than usual or regress in certain developmental milestones, such as potty training.

For parents whose young children didn’t gush with love when they met a new sibling, don’t worry. Jealousy of babies is totally normal and doesn’t mean your kids won’t get along eventually. It just takes time to adjust to a new reality and a new dynamic in the household. Dr. Hindie M. Klein recommends tips like referring to the new baby as “our baby,” letting the older sibling help in caring for the baby (in ways that are age-appropriate, of course) and providing some special parental one-on-one time with the older child to help kids more easily adjust to a new baby in the house.

Even baby Hudson and his big-hearted bro here will surely have sibling spats of their own over the years. Sibling love is complicated, but it’s great to see it start off on such a beautiful note.

Owner of plus-size dress shop gifts $700 prom dress to ‘shy’ teen after watching her light up

Adolescence is a harrowing time for body image and self-esteem all around, but few milestones are as universally daunting as finding a prom dress. Whether it’s due to budget constraints, not being able to find a dress that fits, or both, what should be a fun event is often viscerally dreaded.

This was certainly the case for Summer Lucille. Lucille told Today.com that growing up, “if you weren’t skinny, there weren’t many options, and it was devastating for me because I’ve always loved fashion.”

She recalled, “I went to my prom looking like a church lady in a suit dress with a jacket because it was the only thing that fit. It was a very sad period in my life.”

Wanting to ensure a more positive experience for others, Lucille opened up her plus-size-only dress shop, Juicy Body Goddess, in 2016. The boutique, based in North Carolina, features mostly Lucille’s own designs of formal dresses up to a size 6X.

Juicy Body Goddess really started gaining traction when Lucille set up a TikTok account sharing truly joyful interactions with customers as they try on different styles.

Besides having an eye for fashion, Lucille is a masterful hype woman, making others feel beautiful with her enthusiastic, heartfelt praises. She clearly loves what she does. Here’s one of many, many examples:

@juicybodygoddess I had to get her number so she can model🤩 #plussizefashion #plussizeboutique #birthday #plussizetiktok #juicybodygoddess ♬ original sound – JuicyBodyGoddess

Juicy Goddess’s TikTok presence is how 18-year-old Elyse Monroe found out about the store. Monroe and her family drove nearly six hours for a consultation, determined to find the perfect dress.

Lucille shared with People that Monroe was initially “nervous and shy,” but after trying on a sparkly, form-fitting purple gown, everything changed.

“When she got into that purple dress, she lit up,” Lucille told People.

There was still a budget problem, however. Monroe’s family could only afford to pay $400. The dress was $700.

Thankfully, Lucille had one more surprise up her sleeve.

A now viral TikTok video shows the Monroe family approach the register, asking how much the dress would cost.

Lucille can be heard saying, “This dress is $700…but it’s free.”

Yeah, as you can probably expect, this leaves the teen and her family a bit emotional. Watch below:

@juicybodygoddess I didn’t cry until I did edit #plussize #plussizetiktok #juicybodygoddess #plussizefashion ♬ original sound – JuicyBodyGoddess

The video has had an overwhelming number of responses. Many commiserated with their own painful prom memories and applauded Lucille for her generosity. Some were even inspired to perform their own act of kindness by donating. Lucille told People that since posting the video, there has been $12,000 worth of gift card purchases. Yowza.

This is such an amazing example of what can happen when we celebrate uniqueness, spread generosity, and prioritize making everyone feel worthy of praise.

Despite Streaming On Peacock, ‘Five Night At Freddy’s’ Scared Up A Ton Of Money During Its Opening Weekend

It’s a topsy-turvy time for the movies right now. There are many ways the pandemic has impacted the industry, including shorter dates between when movies open and when movies are available on streamers. Some movies still get released movies online the same day they hit theaters. One of them is the hotly anticipated (though controversially rated) fan item Five Nights at Freddy’s, but if you assumed moviegoers would watch it at home for free, then assume again.

Per Variety, the horror film — about a lowly security guard (Josh Hutcherson) nonplussed to learn the animatronic dolls at a Chuck E. Cheese-esque eatery come to murderous life at night — made a (sorry for this) killing during its opening weekend. Since opening Thursday night, the film (again, sorry) scared up some $78 million domestically. International numbers were strong, too, with $52.8 million, adding up to a whopping $130 million worldwide.

That’s a pretty decent haul, and Variety helpfully laid out the many, many records it broke:

• Highest-grossing opening weekend for Blumhouse, surpassing 2018’s “Halloween” ($76.22 million)
• 19th Blumhouse film to open in first place at the domestic box office
• Biggest opening weekend of the year for a horror film, overtaking “Scream VI” ($44 million)
• Second-largest debut of all time for a video game adaptation, behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($146.3 million)
• Second-best opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release, following Disney’s 2021 Marvel adventure “Black Widow” ($80 million in theaters and $60 million on Disney+)
• Biggest opening weekend ever for Universal and Peacock’s hybrid releases, beating the slasher sequels, 2021 “Halloween Kills” ($49 million) and 2022’s “Halloween Ends” ($40 million)
• Highest-grossing opening weekend for Halloween weekend release, outperforming 2011’s “Puss in Boots” ($34 million)
• Third-biggest debut for any horror film, trailing 2017’s “It” ($123 million) and 2019’s “It: Chapter Two” ($91 million)
• Best debut for PG-13 horror film, besting 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” ($68 million)

International
• Second-biggest horror opening after “The Nun II” ($52.7 million)

Global
• Biggest horror opening of 2023, ahead of “The Nun II” ($88.1 million)
• Highest-grossing Blumhouse global opening of all time, ahead of “Halloween” ($91.8 million)

Not bad for a movie based on an insanely popular video game series that’s been hooking fans for nearly a decade. But if you’re not the target audience, there’s always a wonderful Scorsese picture you can watch sans intermission.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is now in theaters…and on Peacock.

Here Are The Best Halloween Costumes From Music Artists In 2023

Due to its awkward placement within the week, Halloween 2023 celebrations kicked off early this weekend. Every year, Heidi Klum shuts the internet down with an over-the-top look. However, many of music’s biggest names aren’t far behind. Some of the most searched outfit inspirations this year included Beyoncé, Drake, and Taylor Swift. However, neither of those entertainers has shared their spooky spirits with their followers just yet.

So far, here are the best Halloween costumes from music artists in 2023 in alphabetic order.

Adele

During her latest Las Vegas residency show, Adele completely changed her signature look when she took the stage dressed as the fictional character Morticia Addams.

Halle Bailey & DDG

Halle Bailey and DDG pulled inspiration from another musical pairing for their look. The couple dressed up as Janet Jackson and the late Tupac’s characters in the 1993 film Poetic Justice.

Ice Spice

For Ice Spice, she traded her signature ginger curly afro for a short jet-black cut to embody the animated cartoon character Betty Boop.

Kim Petras

SAG-AFTRA instituted strict rules around members’ Halloween costumes, but those restrictions didn’t apply to Kim Petras. The singer decided to dress as Cherry Darling from the 2007 indie horror flick Planet Terror.

Lizzo

The death of Tina Turner still saddens the world. For Lizzo, she chose to use her spooky night plans to pay tribute to the late singer.

Machine Gun Kelly & Megan Fox

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox put their love for Manga on full display with two couple costumes. But their Death Note-inspired looks will take your breath away.

Tyga

Tyga is a monster when it comes to the beats he bodies so for his Halloween look, he opted to be as equally terrifying. The rapper went all out for his Art The Clown (from the 2016 slasher film Terrifier) get-up.

We will be updating this list as more celeb costumes continue rolling in.

Some of the artists mentioned are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

A fireman’s children wrote him a hilariously honest obituary he would have loved

After you’re gone, people will probably forget the exact things you said to them while you were alive, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.

Unfortunately, when people write obituaries that sum up a person’s life they’re often just a chronological list of factual details of their lives such as where they lived, where they worked, and how many children they had.

While those facts are important, they don’t really explain the type of person the deceased was or how they made people feel. An obituary for fireman William Ziegler of New Orleans, Louisiana has attracted a lot of attention for how it hilariously summed up the life of a man who was a real raconteur.

Zeigler’s daughter, Sharah Currier, said that he used to read funny obituaries to his children, so they decided to write one that would make him laugh. “He would have loved this,” she told the Times-Picayune. “He probably would have forwarded this obituary to us.”

Zeigler began his career as a volunteer in the U.S. Navy.

William volunteered for service in the United States Navy at the ripe old age of 17 and immediately realized he didn’t much enjoy being bossed around. He only stuck it out for one war. Before his discharge, however, the government exchanged numerous ribbons and medals for various honorable acts. Upon his return to the City of New Orleans in 1971, thinking it best to keep an eye on him, government officials hired William as a fireman.

He then continued his life of service by joining the fire department.

After twenty-five years, he suddenly realized that running away from burning buildings made more sense than running toward them. He promptly retired. Looking back, William stated that there was no better group of morons and mental patients than those he had the privilege of serving with (except Bob, he never liked you, Bob).

Ziegler’s children believe that he’s in heaven with his alcoholic dog.

Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but well-wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a Schaefer Light beer can and drink it in his honor. He was never one for sentiment or religiosity, but he wanted you to know that if he owes you a beer, and if you can find him in Heaven, he will gladly allow you to buy him another. He can likely be found forwarding tasteless internet jokes (check your spam folder, but don’t open these at work). Expect to find an alcoholic dog named Judge passed out at his feet.

His children end the obituary stressing the fact that he’s actually dead.

Unlike previous times, this is not a ploy to avoid creditors or old girlfriends. He assures us that he is gone. He will be greatly missed.

You can read the whole obituary at the Times-Picayune.

Ever wonder why people 100 years ago died so much younger? It’s these 14 reasons.

FACT CHECK TIME! This article originally appeared on 11.21.14 and this infographic is based on data from 2012.

Unfortunately, because of the misinformation from the anti-vaccination movement, some of these diseases have trended up in a really bad way over the past several years.

Wellness involves a lot of personal choices and the tradeoff between personal liberty and shared public good.

Measles is the starkest example. There were about 61 cases of measles in all of 2012, but in just the first seven months of 2014, there have been nearly 600.

As this chart shows, vaccinations are not like taxes rates or even freedom of speech. The impact of one’s personal health choices can have a significant impact on the population around them, in their communities and even on a national level. It makes that trade-off all the more complicated and one not easily distilled into one convenient political or religious ideology.

Obviously, the topic of vaccinations has become immensely more complicated since the onset of COVID-19 in 2020. But history teaches us valuable lessons and information is power. No matter how you feel about vaccines today, this chart is a reminder that medical science can be used for incredible good. Without breakthrough vaccinations in the past, many of us would likely not be here to have the debate about our personal choices now and into the future.
