When Will Surprise Box-Office Hit ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Be On Streaming?

A group of mass-murdering animatronics managed to scare up big numbers at the box office over the weekend, but for fans who couldn’t trek to theaters to see the latest horror hit, Five Nights At Freddy’s, we’ve got good news … it’s already streaming.

The Josh Hutcherson-starring thriller based on the popular video game landed in theaters and on Peacock over the weekend as part of Universal and Blumhouse’s day-and-date streaming release plan. Though the streaming platform isn’t free, a subscription to Peacock costs just $5.99 per month — considerably less than a movie ticket. Despite being cheaper to stream, the Emma Tammi-directed horror flick drew some pretty impressive crowds to theaters, toppling Taylor Swift’s box office reign and outperforming expectations with a massive $80 million domestic debut.

“The IP is ridiculously popular, and Blumhouse and our director Emma Tammi did an amazing job of translating that to the big screen,” Universal’s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr told Variety. “The genre lends itself to people wanting to experience it together.”

Produced by horror maestro Jason Blum, the film sees Hutcherson playing a security guard working the night shift at a kitschy kid’s eaterie called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza — a fast food joint with some eerie similarities to Chuck E. Cheese. The difference between the two? The cutesy animatronic performers at Freddy’s are more interested in torturing than entertaining patrons — especially after closing time.

According to Blum, who posted a thank you to fans showing up in theaters for the film’s debut, Five Nights At Freddy’s has become the company’s biggest opening of all time.

Here Are The Openers For Doja Cat’s ‘The Scarlet Tour’

This week, Doja Cat begins the tour for her fourth studio album, Scarlet. The Scarlet Tour kicks off in San Francisco on Halloween, then runs through December 13 in Chicago.

Doja will be supported by two artists on the tour: Doechii and Ice Spice. You can learn more about them below.

Who Is Opening Doja Cat’s The Scarlet Tour?

Doechii

Tampa, Florida rapper Doechii is, like Doja Cat, as talented at slinging witty bars as she is at breaking genre conventions and transgressing societal ones. She first broke out in 2021 with her viral single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” signing to Top Dawg Entertainment (the former label home of Kendrick Lamar), and embarking on a one-woman quest to completely upset the status quo of rap. After a breakout performance on labelmate Isaiah Rashad’s “Wat U Sed,” she was partnered with Capitol Records and took a hard left turn with the house-influenced “Persuasive.” A later single, “Crazy,” combated the sexualization of women in pop culture, then her debut EP She / Her / Black Bitch continued challenging misogyny and anti-Blackness in culture. She’s working on her debut full-length album now.

Ice Spice

Like Doechii, Ice Spice owes her notoriety to TikTok. Her single “Munch (Feelin’ U)” was a viral sensation, sparking a new slang term and making Ice Spice an instantly recognizable face to the under-thirty set with her orphan Annie orange curls and ample lower-body proportions. With a flow like a female Pop Smoke, her drill rap takes on “Bikini Bottom” and “In Ha Mood” continued driving her success until the PinkPantheress collaboration “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” gave her her highest-charting single. She released her debut EP, Like…? in 2023. She’s since collaborated multiple times with Nicki Minaj (“Princess Diana,” “Barbie World”), as well as with Taylor Swift (“Karma”), building anticipation for her full-length debut.

Here Are The Musical Guests For ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ This Week

This week, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has a truly stacked lineup of musical guests planned — providing something for pretty much every type of listener. Here’s what to know about who will be appearing or performing on his late-night show for Halloween week.

Sean “Diddy” Combs — Monday, October 30

Tonight, Diddy will appear on Kimmel’s show to chat with him. While he isn’t the musical guest tonight, the two will likely have a lot to talk about, given he returned with a new album titled The Love Album: Off The Grid last month.

Jessie Murph — Monday, October 30

Jessie Murph is one of Monday’s musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. She is a 19-year-old rising pop performer who made waves last year with her song, “Pray,” which charted in the UK.

Jelly Roll — Monday, October 30

The other is a country-inspired rapper called Jelly Roll, as he collaborated with Murph on a song titled “Wild Ones” that dropped a few weeks ago — which is what the two will be playing.

Madison Beer — Tuesday, October 31

Madison Beer is the musical guest on Halloween. Last month, Beer dropped her second studio album, Silence Between Songs, which is filled with thrilling pop hits including her early single, “Home To Another One.”

Devon Gilfillian — Wednesday, November 1

On Wednesday, soul musician Devon Gilfillian will take the show’s stage. Some viewers might recognize him, as he previously appeared on Kimmel’s show back in 2020, where he performed his song, “The Good Life.” Given he dropped a new album, Love You Anyway, back in April, his performance will likely be tied to that.

Mariah Carey — Thursday, November 2

As the holiday and winter season approaches, Mariah Carey is the perfect guest to kick off that spirit. This time around, Carey won’t be performing, but her presence alone will surely help the audience stay festive and entertained.

Allison Russell — Thursday, November 2

Wrapping out the performances this week, Allison Russell will likely play a selection from her recent September album, The Returner. While it is her second solo record, Russell previously played in a number of different musical groups.

The NBA Unveiled Colorful In-Season Tournament Courts For All 30 Teams

The NBA is doing its best to make the In-Season Tournament stand out in its inaugural year. With group games beginning this weekend, the league has been trying to get fans excited with a (very good) Heist ad campaign that is running on most game broadcasts, but one of the biggest challenges is making the games, which are just regular season games with a tournament designation, feel a bit more important.

The league has been trying to spice up the regular season for some time and they hope the tournament can do that, but they also know they can’t just have the same look and feel as any other game. As such, the league unveiled new courts for all 30 teams that are very colorful and will undoubtedly stand out from what we see on a nightly basis — many of which take cues from this year’s City Edition uniforms.

Now, while I don’t think all of them are great, I do think it’s a smart move from the NBA to make tournament games easily identifiable when you turn one on. Given the groups aren’t going to be remembered by most fans — and they’re going to change every year — it’s going to be a bit tricky remembering what games are cup games. However, with the courts being so different from the normal courts — and even alternates teams go to sometimes — it’s going to be immediately understood when you’re watching a tournament game, which is needed to get people invested in it.

While some teams went with a pretty basic approach, others got wild with their designs, with the Pelicans, Pacers, Suns, and Knicks getting very colorful.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Proposed ‘Star Wars’ Movie About Jabba The Hutt Sounds So Good

You know how Star Wars can make people forget The Rise of Skywalker ever happened? Repeat after me: Guillermo del Toro Jabba the Hutt movie. It’s fun to say and it’s fun to imagine — and sadly it will stay in our imagination, because it’s not going to get made.

“When I spoke to them, when I spoke to [Lucasfilm’s] John Knoll about it, and I said, if I ever do [a Star Wars film], I would love to do Jabba the Hutt’s Scarface. You know? His ascension in the crime family,” del Toro said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, according to The Playlist. This conversation happened “about 6 years or so” ago, but, the Oscar-winning director stressed, “it’s not a plan, I’m not announcing anything, don’t pick it up [as a thing].”

Asked if he would want to make a Star Wars film in the future, del Toro didn’t say no but explained his tastes are just getting weirder… “I feel strangely more and more inclined to do more strange stuff; do things that are a little more cagey, a little more quirky, so I dunno,” he said.

del Toro was interested in making a Jabba movie because “I like monsters. I just love monsters, and Jabba is a) basically my same shirt size, and b) I love him, man.” Let the man make his big crime boss slug movie!

You can listen to the podcast below.

Here Are The Musical Guests For ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ This Week

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returns this week with a slate of guests including Michael Shannon, Alex Cooper, Cailee Spaeny, Sylvester Stallone, and Bobby Flay. The musical guests include Depeche Mode, Bleachers, and Sheryl Crow. You can check out more on the musical guests for the week of October 30 – November 3 below.

Depheche Mode — Tuesday, October 31

After playing last Friday’s episode, the New Wave rockers will return this week for an encore performance. They’ve got three more singles from their new album Memento Mori to choose from, including “Ghosts Again,” “Speak To Me,” and “My Favourite Stranger.”

Bleachers — Wednesday, November 1

Bleachers’ “Modern Girl” has been out for a little over a month and their fans have been salivating for a new album. Jack Antonoff is also listed as an interview this week, so perhaps he’ll give those fans what they want and announce the band’s fourth studio album on the show. Antonoff recently celebrated a big win as the producer of Taylor Swift’s hit “Cruel Summer” as the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week.

Sheryl Crow — Thursday, November 2

Sheryl Crow has an upcoming show at Barclays in Brooklyn, so it only makes sense she’d stop by The Tonight Show to spread the word.

Steven Hyden’s Favorite Music Of October 2023

Every month, Uproxx cultural critic Steven Hyden makes an unranked list of his favorite music-related items released during this period — songs, albums, books, films, you name it.

1. The Rolling Stones, Hackney Diamonds

I agree with the critical consensus that this is a good late-period Stones record. About half of the album is composed of enjoyably solid songs (this includes the single and obvious standout “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven”) while the other half is made up of enjoyably stupid songs (this includes the other single and “convenient excuse to turn Sydney Sweeney into a video vixen” vehicle “Angry”). Another of the “enjoyably stupid” songs, “Live By The Sword,” is one of two tracks to feature the late Charlie Watts, and the only number since 1989’s Steel Wheels to also include original bassist Bill Wyman. (Though the real reason I can’t get “Live By The Sword” out of my head is that the melody is vaguely reminiscent of “The Diarrhea Song.”) The M.O. for primary producer Andrew Watt was to modernize the Stones while retaining their aforementioned “quintessentially Stonesy” quality, and he’s mostly succeeded. They sound muscular but not lumbering, catchy but not overly pandering to contemporary trends, and (most importantly) “admirably dignified” without appearing “terrifyingly old.”

2. Squirrel Flower, Tomorrow’s Fire

Ella Williams’ once semi-jokingly referred to the music she makes as Squirrel Flower as “prairie-folk,” a nod to her past as a college student in Iowa. While I appreciated Williams’ songs when she worked in this sonically modest lane, they didn’t hit me the way her latest record does. While Williams retains the sensitivity of her previous work, she has embraced full-on rock bombast on Tomorrow’s Fire in a manner that reminds me of Sharon Van Etten’s Patti Smith turn on Remind Me Tomorrow. Like Van Etten, Williams knows how to juxtapose her knowing vocals with foreboding, heavy riffing atmosphere, which pulls you deep into this record’s dark but inviting world.

3. Dusk, Glass Pastures

My favorite genre of 2023 is roughhewn and twangy indie rock with blown-out guitars and loads of pedal steel. If the term weren’t out of fashion I would simply say “alt-country” because that’s essentially what albums like Wednesday’s Rat Saw God and Florry’s The Holey Bible are. And that’s essentially what Glass Pastures is, too. I would love Dusk if they only hailed from my hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin. (The band’s leader, Amos Pitsch, also fronts the excellent punk band Tenement. He’s a one-man indie-rock Chamber Of Commerce in my place of birth.) With Glass Pastures, he’s made the Midwestern version of those sorta alt-country records I love from the south.

4. The Gaslight Anthem, History Books

When these Jersey arena-punks reconvened after a long hiatus (which really felt like a break-up) for a tour in 2022 Brian Fallon insisted that it would not just be a cash-grab reunion. New music was always part of the equation. But given the long break since 2014’s Get Hurt — and Fallon’s own turn toward introspective singer-songwriter music — it was natural to wonder whether GLA could pick back up their classic, well, anthemic sound. When they dropped the title track of their new album — a duet with none other than Bruce Springsteen — a few months back, those doubts were mostly alleviated. Now that the entire LP is in the world, they are officially put to bed. After the dour Get Hurt, History Books restores the muscular classic-rockisms that marked albums like American Slang and Handwritten, while also integrating the thoughtful maturity of Fallon’s solo work.

5. Mannequin Pussy, “I Got Heaven”

Has it really been four years since Patience? On that album, Mannequin Pussy made it clear that they make nü-grunge rock as well as anybody, an impressive feat given that you can’t throw a Dr. Marten boot without hitting an indie band attempting to emulate the peak of the Alternative Nation era. While Mannequin Pussy did put out an EP, Perfect, in 2021, the forthcoming I Got Heaven (due in March) represents their first full-throated statement in quite some time. And judging by the title track, it appears that their grasp of melody and heaviness has only grown cannier over time.

6. Prize Horse, “Your Time”

Do you need more nü-grunge in your life. This emerging Minneapolis band classifies themselves as “alternative rock,” even though (I’m guessing) the members weren’t born in even the same decade as Superunknown. Nevertheless, this single smokes in a Hum circa Downward Is Heavenward sort of way. I’m officially looking forward to their debut LP dropping in 2024.

7. Bory, “We Both Won”

The Shins’ second album Chutes Too Narrow turned 20 this month, which inspired me to put on a pivotal record of my personal mid-20s era for the first time in many years. And I was pleased to discover that it held all the way up. Though it also made me pine for a new band that is expert in the ways of jangly rock from the Pacific Northwest. Thankfully, the winning Portland outfit Bory arrived just in time to announce their upcoming LP, Who’s A Good Boy, due in December. I’ll have more to say about the record at a later date, but for now let’s marinate in the catchy melancholy of this really good single.

8. Lightheaded, Good Good Great!

If I told you this EP came out this month via Slumberland Records, you can probably deduce what it sounds like. Yes, this is another example of me reaching for jangly sad-sack rock right in time for autumn. But there are also some audible ’60s pop influences here as well — if (like me) you care about The Left Banke, Millenium and/or The Association, this will be an extremely happy 15-minute listen for you.

9. Robbie Robertson, Killers Of The Flower Moon (Soundtrack From The Apple Original Film)

A worthy and haunting epitaph to a legendary career. Martin Scorsese dedicated his latest epic to Robertson, a long-time friend who passed away in August, but the music composed by the former guitarist for The Band is an even more powerful memorial. A deft mix of blues, gospel, and Indigenous music, the Killers Of The Flower Moon score stands apart as an album like no other film score since Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ landmark music for The Social Network. I listened to it repeatedly this month while on a drive through northern Wisconsin, and I’m convinced it’s one of the very best records of the year.

‘The Marvels’: Everything To Know Including The Release Date, Trailer, Cast & More

As the holiday movie season kicks into gear, The Marvels is on deck to drop the next MCU installment into theaters. Reprising her role as Captain Marvel, Brie Larson suits up for another intergalactic mission where she’s forced to operate outside of her comfort zone by teaming up with Photon, an old face from her past and Ms. Marvel, a new face that represents the future of The Avengers.

What else do we know so far about The Marvels?

Plot

Here’s the official synopsis for The Marvels:

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

Cast

Considering The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel, obviously, Brie Larson returns as Carol Danvers who is even more busy restoring the cosmos after the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, Carol won’t be flying solo this time around. Also, along for the ride is Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) the daughter of Carol’s best friend Maria. Monica first appeared as a child in Captain Marvel before being reintroduced as an adult in WandaVision where her light-based powers were activated. Monica also has some beef with Carol not being around for the death of her mom, so it’ll be interesting to see that dynamic play out.

Rounding out the trio is Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), who only recently entered the superhero scene in her titular Disney+ series. Her powers seem intricately linked to Carol and Monica, and that connection going haywire appears to drive the plot of The Marvels.

Oh, and Samuel L. Jackson will be on hand as Nick Fury, who will still be reeling from the events of Secret Invasion.

Release Date

The Marvels flies into theaters on November 10.

Trailer

You can watch the official trailer for The Marvels below, which makes incredible use of the Beastie Boys “Intergalactic.” Easily one of the best needle drops in a Marvel trailer:

The Marvels blasts into theaters on November 10.
