Desus Had The Time Of His Life On ‘The Daily Show’ While Going In On His Rival DJ Envy

Work is work and life is life, but it’s important to squeeze some joy out of your job, right? This week’s Daily Show guest host Desus Nice gets it. He’s two days into this high profile temp job and having a time, hanging out with his old friend AOC on night one and embracing the chance to go in on his rival, Breakfast Club host DJ Envy, on night two in a moment people have been waiting for since news broke that the radio personality might be in trouble for his alleged role in a possible house flipping ponzi scheme.

While Desus didn’t make a reunion with Kid Mero happen to break this all down (check out our interview with him for insight into why that was never going to happen this week, when Desus is getting his chance to shine solo), he definitely brings his A-Game. This isn’t a quick meal, either.

Shortly after the 3:30 mark above, Desus is savoring it, giving a cliffs notes version of his (and Mero’s) feud with DJ Envy and gently mocking his leaning on “The Lehman Brothers of hip-hop” for financial advice while summoning all his powers of restraint to avoid passing out from the irony-rich laughter. It’s great stuff unless you’re DJ Envy… who was, like the rest of us, probably waiting for Desus to enter the chat while rueing the timing. Then again, he may have more pressing matters on his mind.

Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan joins near the end of the clip to double down, but the high point is Desus’ ice cold closing line: “DJ Envy’s a DJ, a man who turns tables. And now the tables have turned.” Damn. There really is nothing as inspiring as seeing someone really taking pride in and getting pure happiness from their work.

Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Style’ About Harry Styles?

Taylor Swift is just a few days away from releasing her re-recorded album, 1989 (Taylor’s Version). Because of this, new and old fans alike are revisiting the original era from 2014 and thinking about the past songs.

One of which is “Style,” and of course, has long been suspected to have been written about Swift’s ex, Harry Styles. Here’s what to know, for those looking for more details that might not have known when the news first broke.

Obviously, because of the title, it seems quite likely. During the song, Swift also describes the love interest as having “long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt.” For an interesting parallel, when Styles released his first solo album, his song “Two Ghosts” made reference to the “same white shirt, couple more tattoos” — adding to the evidence that it could be about him.

“‘Style’ is a song that I wrote about kind of observing fashion trends and cultural trends and seeing how there are certain things that are constant,” Swift previously shared in a Big Machine Radio commentary. “I started thinking about that in terms of feelings. There are certain feelings like that. There are certain people that float in and out of your life, sort of, like a trend that keeps coming back in style and never fully fades away.”

Given that other 1989 songs are also rumored to be about Styles, like “Out Of The Woods” and more, there will probably be some more interesting details revealed when Swift drops the vault tracks for her re-recorded version.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) is out 10/27 via Republic Records. Find more information here.

Who Is Jordan Ward? Meet The ‘White Crocs’ Singer

Earlier this week, St. Louis singer Jordan Ward made his debut on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, playing songs from his March debut album, Forward. The moment marked the peak of his already outstanding 2023; after opening for JID and Smino on their Luv Is 4ever Tour, he dropped Forward, then played the Dreamville Festival before joining 6lack on his Since I Have A Lover Tour.

Meanwhile, in Uproxx’s new interview with R&B star Arin Ray, Ray name-checked Ward as one of his favorite new names in R&B, calling him “incredible.” So:

Who Is Jordan Ward?

Standing confidently at a junction of soul, hip-hop, and dance music, the St. Louis-born Ward employs groovy production and a melodic, half-rapped delivery to detail narratives of life and love. Comparisons to fellow St. Louisan Smino wouldn’t go amiss, as they share similar sing-song rap styles and languid Midwestern drawls. However, where Smi sticks mainly in the lane of cosmic funk pioneered by the likes of Outkast, Ward likes neo-soul-inspired ballads and alt-R&B backdrops for his tales of situationships and grinding for his goals.

The standout track that has gotten much attention for Ward is “White Crocs” with another St. Louis native, Ryan Trey. It’s a spacey, swagged-out song that sees them lamenting the expensive tastes of the women they’re most attracted to. Check it out below.

The Nuggets Showed Why Continuity Is Their Biggest Advantage In A Title Defense

With just about every top contender making at least one or two major additions this summer, the defending champion Denver Nuggets found themselves often on the periphery of offseason conversations around the NBA. It wasn’t a dismissal of the Nuggets chances to win back-to-back titles, but rather an understanding that they’d be there in the end and there wasn’t much new to discuss with them.

In the summer, it’s more fun to explore how new star combinations will work together and discuss whether a team has done enough to vault into that contender realm. However, now that the games have begun, it was nice of the Nuggets to remind everyone on ring night why they are still the team to unseat at the top of the NBA’s pecking order. Denver isn’t flawless by any means, and we saw in the opener that they still have work to do in getting their bench unit in order over these 82 games before they embark on another postseason run. That said, their advantage over every single contender in the NBA is their starting lineup’s continuity and, to steal a favorite line from front offices around the league, corporate knowledge.

Throughout the first 3 quarters and change, there are opportunities to go on runs against this Denver team if you can take advantage of bench lineups and pounce on the minutes Nikola Jokic rests. However, it is in the first five minutes and final five minutes of the game, when Denver has its full starting five on the floor, that they take control and rarely leave openings for their opponents. With Jokic and Jamal Murray running the show, with as collaborative and connected a two-man game as there is in the NBA, Michael Porter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope spacing the floor around them, and Aaron Gordon screening, lurking on the baseline, and making darting cuts, there just aren’t any weaknesses for defenses to steer them into.

While other contenders are going to spend this season trying to build chemistry, the Nuggets just have to keep their machine well-oiled. The newest member of that starting group is Caldwell-Pope, but the veteran guard has always been an easy fit into lineups and in Year 2 he seamlessly moves in orbit of the Nuggets’ stars. Those stars, Murray and Jokic, could pick apart defenses running pick-and-rolls and dribble-handoffs blindfolded now eight years into their partnership. Porter Jr. took some time to find his comfort level in a non-starring role, but is now happy to ply his trade around Denver’s star duo in his sixth season. Gordon was a snug fit when he arrived four years ago and might be the best example in the league of how embracing a role can elevate a player’s game.

On Tuesday night against the Lakers, that comfort with each other was on full display down the stretch as they closed out an L.A. team that does not have the same confidence and chemistry together. In the early fourth quarter, the Lakers took advantage of Jokic’s final rest of the night to pull within four. When Jokic checked in at the 8:49 mark, Denver’s lead had been trimmed to 94-90. Six minutes later, the Nuggets lead had been extended to 115-101.

Denver scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting with one turnover over that stretch, as Jokic orchestrated a near-perfect closing run to shut down any hopes L.A. had of a comeback, scoring or assisting on 8 of those made field goals — with a hockey assist on the other. The defining play of that stretch was a pick-and-roll between Murray and Jokic, where Murray hit Jokic on the short roll at the elbow, recognizing the defense was out of position, forcing Austin Reaves to help off of the corner and leave Michael Porter Jr. wide open for the dagger three off a quick skip pass from Jokic.

However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how the Nuggets dismantled the Lakers defensively, almost entirely out of one look. As Gibson Pyper (@HalfCourtHoops) broke down in an excellent video on Twitter — with a more detailed breakdown of the play on his Substack — the Nuggets ran the same action over and over down the stretch to get Jokic the ball on the elbow and run Murray and KCP off various split actions to poke holes in the Lakers defense.

This is a hallmark of the Nuggets offense, where they will run the exact same starting action over and over, but with seemingly endless options for how to finish that leave defenses frustrated and confused with what to do — Adam Mares from DNVR has another great video breaking down a different action they spammed over and over in the playoffs last year. Because of their continuity and basketball IQ, the Nuggets will let the defense dictate what they’re going to do and, when it’s that starting five on the floor, they are almost always on the same page with where to go next. Jokic will patiently wait for the defense to show its hand and then flow into whatever action will best take advantage of the space provided. Against the Lakers, that saw both KCP and Murray work into a dribble-handoff, Murray slip a screen to the basket, KCP pop out to the wing, and, finally a rejection of the initial elbow touch for Jokic to go into the pick-and-roll that resulted in the Porter Jr. three.

It has to be demoralizing facing an offense that will show you exactly what they’re going to do, but has too many counters to stop and is so quick to recognize and attack your weakness. It was their advantage last year en route to the title and Tuesday was a reminder to the rest of the league what level they have to get to in terms of chemistry and execution to match them down the stretch. There are so many great groupings of offensive talent around the league this year, but very few figure to operate with the kind of fluidity and decision-making quickness that the Nuggets do. So often offenses get bogged down and slow up down the stretch of the fourth quarter, but Denver’s offense does the opposite. That is what made them the champs, and to unseat them (barring injury), someone is going to have to find that level to be able to go toe-to-toe late in games.

The Wax Statue Of The Rock Has Been ‘Updated’ After The Paris Museum Admitted It Was ‘Whiter Than It Should Have Been’

Last week, a new wax statue of The Rock unveiled at Musée Grévin in Paris kicked off a social media bonanza as people couldn’t help but notice that the sculpture was shockingly pale. The Rock is a proud Samoan, and this thing looked like whiter than Mr. Clean.

The debacle reached The Rock himself, who let his fans know that he’d be having a talk with the museum and suggest some details and improvement “starting with my skin color.” While that sounds terrifying, The Rock was very cordial about the whole thing and promised to stop by the museum so he can “have a drink with myself.”

Well, it turns out The Rock didn’t need to make that call because Musée Grévin was already hustling. As soon as the social media backlash kicked off, the museum pulled the statue and immediately got to work updating it.

“We found his reaction rather friendly when addressing the fact that his figure was indeed whiter than it should have been,” Veronique Berecz, the museum’s head of PR told Variety while explaining how the whole thing was a “honest mistake.”

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet Dwayne Johnson so we used several photos — but as it turns out, pictures can be very tricky because the nuances of skin tones can differ depending on the lighting on photos,” she said. “Every time, the sculptor has to determine the exact face and body shapes, the volumes and it’s always a very complicated challenge if we haven’t met the person.”

Musée Grévin revealed the improved version of the wax statue on Wednesday, and well, it’s a step in the right direction. The Rock no longer looks translucent, but like a lot of celebrity sculptures, something’s still not quite right.

The Fargo season five trailer is here.

I repeat: the Fargo season five trailer is here.

The dark comedy FX series returns after a three-year break with a new star-studded cast. There’s Jon Hamm as Sheriff Roy Tillman, who’s on the hunt for Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, played by Juno Temple, a “seemingly typical Midwestern housewife [who] is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind,” according to the official plot description. In the trailer above, the Ted Lasso star thwarts a burglary using Home Alone-style antics. Sold!

The ensemble also includes Joe Keery from Stranger Things as the sheriff’s son Gator Tillman, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lorraine Lyon, New Girl‘s Lamorne Morris as Deputy Witt Farr, Never Have I Ever’s Richa Moorjani as Deputy Indira Olmstead, and Kids in the Hall legend Dave Foley as Danish Graves.

Here’s more:

With her deepest secrets beginning to unravel, Dot attempts to shield her family from her past, but her doting, well-meaning husband Wayne (David Rysdahl) keeps running to his mother, Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh), for help. CEO of the largest Debt Collection Agency in the country, the “Queen of Debt” is unimpressed with her son’s choice in a wife and spares no opportunity to voice her disapproval. However, when Dot’s unusual behavior catches the attention of Minnesota Police Deputy Indira Olmstead (Richa Moorjani) and North Dakota Deputy Witt Farr (Lamorne Morris), Lorraine appoints her in-house counsel and primary advisor, Danish Graves (Dave Foley), to aid her daughter-in-law. After all, family is family. But Dot has an uncanny knack for survival. And with her back to the wall, she’s about to show why one should never provoke a mother Lyon.

Fargo season five premieres on FX on Tuesday, November 21, and streams on Hulu the next day.

Here’s What We Know About The Subject Of Taylor Swift’s ‘Wildest Dreams’

The Swifties are abuzz for Taylor Swift‘s latest project. 1989 (Taylor’s Version), a re-recording of Swift’s fifth studio album 1989, arrives this week, and as many fans are looking forward to reliving this era, some older theories have once again making the rounds.

One of the many fan theories surrounding this album is the subject of the hit single, “Wildest Dreams.” While Swift herself has never outright confirmed who the song is about, Swifties have many ideas as to whom the song could allude, many believing it to be Harry Styles.

In an interview with NPR, Swift shared that the song is about how the way she looks at relationships has changed.

“That’s actually a really good example of the way I go into relationships now,” said Swift. “If I meet someone who I feel I have a connection with, the first thought I have is: ‘When this ends, I hope it ends well. I hope you remember me well.’ Which is not anything close to the way I used to think about relationships. It’s that realization that it’s the anomaly if something works out; it’s not a given.”

While it’s not likely that Swift will ever flat out reveal the song’s subject, the original version of 1989 came out in 2014, over a year after her break-up with Styles. And it appears that even after their relationship came to an end, the two remain on good terms. At this year’s Grammys, Styles and Swift were seen having a friendly chat — which certainly fulfills Swift’s hopes that things would end well.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) is out 10/27 via Republic. Find more information here.

Will Drake & Lil Yachty Make A Collab Album?

Over the past few months, Drake and Lil Yachty have formed what appears to be a fast friendship. Early in the year, the duo sat down for an insightful interview in which Drake revealed some of his regrets and hinted at retirement. Instead of retiring, though, he dropped a new album, For All The Dogs, which features Yachty on the song “Another Late Night,” then said he’d be taking a break from music.

Still, with the pair’s chemistry, it’s not a short leap to wonder if they might expand on it with a joint album, the way Drake did with Future on What A Time To Be Alive. Lil Yachty addressed the possibility in a vlog for his ongoing Field Trip Tour by Our Generation Music, saying around the 8:30 mark in the video above, “I think he gon’ take a little second to breathe. Imma take next year to figure out my situation and we’ll look into it in the future.” Yachty also demurred when asked about his and Drake’s working relationship, saying, “It’s a story… it’s deep as hell, though.”

Considering that Drake and Yachty’s “Another Late Night” was one of the songs that caught the most attention from For All The Dogs — including from the subject of one of Yachty’s lyrics, Billie Eilish — that could be something to look forward to whenever Drake is done with his hiatus.

Will Daft Punk Reunite For The Olympics In 2024?

Daft Punk fans might be in for a fun surprise next year. In a resurfaced interview, Thomas Jolly, the artistic director for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, seems to hint at the fact that the French duo just might reunite for the Opening Ceremony.

“It would be great if they were in the ceremony,” Jolly said in French, given the band would be “impossible not to think” of for “success or international exposure for a French group,” according to EDMTunes.

However, it’s near the end of the interview when Jolly makes a reveal that is picking up traction: “I lied a bit about Daft Punk.” Because of this, some suspect that the electronic group is more committed to performing than he initially let on.

This would also be a surprising reunion, as Daft Punk put an end to their decades-long career as a band in February 2021. They broke the news with an eight-minute video, fittingly titled “Epilogue.”

However, the Olympics is also not a stranger to getting bands back together, with past examples being the Spice Girls at the 2012 Olympics for the Closing Ceremony.

Only time will tell what Jolly meant by this, but perhaps fans will find out during the 2024 Olympics when they start on July 26, 2024.

Update: Time has told. Jolly clarified his comments in a post on X (formerly Twitter) he shared on October 25 (as NME reports), writing (translated from French), “My comments were confusing and generated a lot of expectations. I must clarify: After discussing a possible presence at the ceremony, the group’s decision is not to participate. I respect this decision and apologize for the ambiguity of my comments.”

Was Jennifer Lawrence Actually Nude In ‘No Hard Feelings’?

It’s not the the funniest movie of 2023, but No Hard Feelings is a enjoyably raunchy R-rated comedy with heart, and it’s good to see star Jennifer Lawrence not in blue paint again. In fact, in the most discussed scene in the movie (which is currently #1 on Netflix), she’s not wearing anything at all.

Based on a real Craigslist ad, No Hard Feelings follows Maddie (played by Lawrence), who is hired by wealthy parents (Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick) to “date” their awkward college-bound son, Percy (a very good Andrew Barth Feldman). Maddie suggests going skinny dipping during their first night out together, and while they’re in the water, a group of drunken teens steal their clothes. A fight ensues when a completely nude Maddie storms out of the ocean and approaches the teens; she gets their clothes back but not before getting punched… down there.

Lawrence declined to use a body double for the sequence. “Everyone in my life and my team is doing the right thing and going, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure?’ I didn’t even have a second thought. It was hilarious to me,” the Oscar winner told Variety. Barth Feldman added, “Every situation that these characters end up in, you’re laughing your butt off. We became so close instantly that nothing ever felt weird or unsafe. It was entirely professional.”

The scene took a day to shoot following “a lot of rehearsal,” Lawrence said. The wrestling move alone must have taken weeks of training. The actress is being called “completely fearless” for the Eastern Promises-esque fight, but let’s also give it up for Barth Feldman. He killed it here.

No Hard Feelings is streaming on Netflix.
