How Is Scorsese’s ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Different From The David Grann Book?

Over the last couple months, David Grann’s 2017 bestseller Killers of the Flower Moon has re-entered the book charts. There’s a good reason for that: There’s a high-profile movie adaptation en route. It’s got flashy pedigree. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons star. No less than Martin Scorsese directed. And it’s really, really long. But how faithful is the film to the book, especially considering it’s non-fiction? Turns out there’s at least one big difference.

In a recent Time cover story that profiled Scorsese, the legendary filmmaker said that the initial script for the film closely followed the structure of the book. The first section introduces a spate of mysterious deaths and murders of members of Oklahoma’s Osage tribe, who’ve come into quite a bit of wealth after oil was discovered on their land. But from there on out, the majority of the focus is on Tom White, a former Texas Marshal enlisted by the federal government to root out the killer(s). If the book even has a protagonist, the closest to it is White.

But White is not the protagonist of the film. That’s because Scorsese and team effectively inverted the book, turning White into a supporting player and two supporting players from the book into the protagonists of the film. Those would be Mollie (Lily Gladstone), an Osage woman who’s watched as family members died off, and Ernest (DiCaprio), her husband, who may be involved in the killings.

Making White the main character while punting Mollie and other Osage characters to the margins seemed wrong to Scorsese. “After a certain point, I realized I was making a movie about all the white guys,” he said to Time. “Meaning I was taking the approach from the outside in, which concerned me.”

DiCaprio agreed. “It just didn’t feel like it got to the heart of it,” DiCaprio told British Vogue about the original script. “We weren’t immersed in the Osage story.” (DiCaprio was even initially supposed to play White. The role instead went to Plemons.)

The decision to change Flower Moon came relatively early into pre-production, as DiCaprio stated: “There was this tiny, small scene between Mollie and Ernest that provoked such emotion in us at the reading, and we just started to penetrate into what that relationship was, because it was so twisted and bizarre and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”

So if you’ve read Gramm’s book, prepared to still be surprised by what’s on-screen.

Killers of the Flower Moon hits theaters on October 20.

Latto And Christina Aguilera Are Teasing A Collaboration And They Seem Ready To Share It

Earlier today (October 10), Christina Aguilera announced that she would launch a Las Vegas residency at the end of the year. But it appears that she has even more exciting things up her sleeve. Perhaps Aguilera might have new music on the way.

Today on Twitter, rapper Latto teased some sort of collaboration between herself and Aguilera.

“Should we tell them?,” said our previous cover star Latto, tagging Aguilera’s Twitter handle, adding a side-eye emoji, and a chuckling emoji.

Aguilera quote-replied to the tweet, saying, “I think it’s time babe….,’ further fueling speculation about an impending collab.

Aguilera’s Vegas series is set to kick off on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31, with further dates to be announced later. The residency will take place at the Voltaire Belle de Nuit at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. According to Billboard, who first reported the story, Aguilera’s residency will feature her performing her hits, which span over two decades.

“I look forward to bringing Las Vegas a new show that fuses music, sophistication and art in ways I have never performed before,” Aguilera said to Billboard. “What I love about the intimacy at Voltaire at The Venetian Resort is how up-close-and-personal I can be with the audience … a truly modern twist on the performance experience.”

Rep. Nancy Mace’s Bizarre Attempt To Reference A Classic Novel Left People Scratching Their Heads

On Tuesday, South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace was seen skulking about Capitol Hill wearing a shirt emblazoned with a red “A.” Why? Was it a dig at Senate’s failed dress code change? Alas, the real reason was far dumber.

Per Newsweek, Mace told reporters that it wasn’t just a red “A.” It was a “scarlet letter,” a reference to The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic of American literature, in which a woman is forced to wear the titular object after being caught committing adultery. The “A,” in fact, denotes her crime, as opposed to some other letter.

What crime did Mace commit? According to her, she’s been hounded for being one of eight Republicans to vote to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

“I’m wearing the scarlet letter after the week that I just had last week, being a woman up here and being demonized for my vote and for my voice,” Mace told reporters. “I’m here to let the rest of the world know and the country know, I’m on the side of the people. I’m not on the side of the establishment, and I’m gonna do the right thing every single time, no matter the consequences ’cause I don’t answer to anybody in D.C. I don’t answer to anyone in Washington. I only answer to the people.”

It’s true that Mace was the only woman among the octet, and perhaps she’s experienced more criticism than others. That said, that’s unlikely given that it’s Gaetz, not her, who’s become the face of the McCarthy ouster.

Even if that were true, though, it’s not the smoothest comparison, is it? Hester Prynne was both a victim of religious oppression and sexism in 17th century Massachusetts, and over the crime of adultery. Mace simply did what seven men also did, to say nothing of all the Democrats who voted against McCarthy. Should Matt Gaetz wear a scarlet letter, too?

After Mace’s stunt went public, many people postulated that perhaps Grace isn’t as familiar with Hawthorne’s novel as she purports to be.

Some considered her stunt a worse adaptation of The Scarlet Letter than the disgraced 1996 film version starring Demi Moore.

Others wondered if the “A” really stood for “abortion ban,” which Mace and others in her party want to force upon the nation.

It Took Dillon Brooks Five Minutes To Get Ejected From His Rockets Preseason Debut

Dillon Brooks really seems to relish in having the title of the NBA’s most annoying provocateur. During his time with the Memphis Grizzlies, Brooks was a tone-setter, frequently taking on the opposing team’s top perimeter player and battling with them in such a way that earned him the nickname “Dillon the Villain.”

While his tenure in Memphis didn’t have the most ceremonious of endings, Brooks was able to get a big payday this summer by putting pen to paper on a lucrative contract with the Houston Rockets. It was one of several big moments for Brooks during the offseason — he was crucial in Canada’s efforts to medal at the FIBA Basketball World Cup — but now, he’s back in Houston and ramping up as the Rockets hope to take a big step forward this season.

But old habits die hard, and five minutes into his preseason debut with the team, Brooks ran into a screen set by Indiana Pacers big man Daniel Theis. Brooks ran into him, hit him below the belt, and after a review, got hit with a Flagrant 2 and saw his night come to a premature end.

Brooks had zero points on 0-for-0 shooting with an assist and two fouls at the time of his ejection.

The ‘Exorcist’ Sequels May Get Some Retooling After The First One Opened Soft

When Universal acquired the rights to the Exorcist franchise, they coughed up a pretty penny — $400 million, to be exact. Champagne bottles probably weren’t popping after its opening weekend, when the first out of the gate, The Exorcist: Believer, only netted $44.2 million worldwide. The studio is soldiering ahead with the franchise anyway, but they might not be demanding a change of plan.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that the trilogy laid out by filmmaker David Gordon Green will “almost certainly” receive “some degree of creative rethink for the next two films” in the wake of the box office underperformance. That’s a shame because the first sequel, called The Exorcist: Deceiver, already had a shooting script, as well as a release date for 2025.

Over the weekend, THR ran an interview with Green, who directed the first, in which he expressed some doubt whether he would continue, at least as a director. He cited his busy schedule, which includes not just reviving horror franchises but dramatically shifting gears for the delightful HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones.

“My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled,” Green said. “But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.”

Before reviving The Exorcist, Green — who let’s not forget started his career in indies and has often juxtaposed smaller fare with, say, stoner action comedies — had already had success doing the same for the Halloween films.

Alarmists Are Saying California Just Banned Skittles! Here’s An Explainer

California has just taken your Skittles away! NEWSOM JUST SAID “F*CK TASTING THE RAINBOW!”

Only… not really. In fact not at all. Not even kinda.

On Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 418 into law which will prohibit food products from being manufactured, sold, delivered, distributed, held, or offered for sale in California if they contain the chemicals brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, or Red Dye 3.

Oh no, those happen to be all of my personal favorites!

This move puts thousands of products, including cereals, sodas, and candies at risk. Ironically, Skittles is not one of those candies. But this is a big deal because of the sheer population of California which, according to the last US census in 2021, consists of 39,237,836 people (that’s a big market!), which likely means this bill will affect you even if you live outside of the state.

The likelihood of us living in a world where thousands of food products are simply not sold in California is unlikely, meaning this will directly affect all cereals, sodas, and candies that contain the four chemicals. So why is this bill known as the Skittles ban and what does this mean for your favorite snacks and candies?

Let’s break it down.

Why Is It Called ‘The Skittles Ban?’

Because the media is lazy. According to USA Today, when AB 418 was first authored the original legislation also banned the coloring agent titanium dioxide, which is found in Skittles, M&Ms, and some dairy products like Kraft fat-free shredded cheddar cheese. No wonder that pre-shredded cheese is so delicious! (We’re kidding of course, that shit is trash)

The version of the bill that was eventually signed into law does not, in fact, include titanium dioxide but people haven’t stopped calling it “The Skittles Ban” because that sounds way sexier than AB 418.

Why Is California Banning These Four Chemicals In The First Place?

When it comes to food safety regulations, the United States is living in the past. Brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, or red dye 3 have all been banned in Europe since as far back as 2008 due to various health concerns.

One in particular, red dye 3, has been found to cause cancer in animals according to the National Library of Medicine, though there are currently no studies that link the chemical to cancer in humans. Still, red dye 3 has been banned from use in cosmetics for over 30 years, so if it’s not good enough to put on your face do you really want to eat it?

We don’t!

So… Which Of My Favorite Snacks Are Banned And When Does The Law Go Into Effect?

Likely, nothing!

In a statement to Consumer Reports, the author of AB 418, Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, clarified that “This bill will not ban any foods or products — it simply will require food companies to make minor modifications to their recipes and switch to safer alternative ingredients that they already use in Europe and so many other places around the globe.”

On top of that, Ab 418 doesn’t go into effect until 2027, which should give companies enough time to revise their recipes and ditch the banned chemicals.

Anything Else I Should Know?

Not really, if you want to get really in the weeds, a single violation of the bill will impose fines up to $10,000, which means this isn’t likely something that big food brands will ignore. As we said, California is a big state, so that means it’s in food brands’ best interest to just change their recipes or risk losing millions of dollars in sales.

This isn’t a change you’re likely going to notice but we’re almost positive brands will use this as a justification to raise prices. That sucks, but shelling out some extra cents on your Skittles (again, not affected) is a hell of a lot cheaper than cancer treatment, so we’ll take it.
